One of the most common complaints that I here from parents is about traffic congestion around the school and An Phu. Obviously as more and more families have cars the congestion on the roads will only increase. Reducing traffic is certainly a goal that would bring numerous benefits and help reduce fumes and pollution in the environment of our school.

Some of the ideas that have been suggested by our community members and others in An Phu are:

• Encourage more families to walk or ride bicycles to school.• Make more use of school and apartment busing.• Car sharing/pooling. This system has been successfully introduced in many countries around the world.

All it takes is a bit of time to organise with neighbours to share pick-ups and drop offs. • Instead of driving right to school to drop off students drivers families could walk the last 100-200 meters

so that the pint of maximum congestion is reduced ie dropping students on the other side of the Nguyen U Di bridge and walking the last 50meters.

• Reduce the time drivers keeps their engine running, thus increasing exhaust fumes in the air around the school in the afternoon.• Encouraging drivers to drive more carefully and slowly near the school so that it is safe for student and parents to walk and ride to

school.

deer paradeThe Grade 10 art classes were presented with the CowParade and ElephantParade art phenomenas that are happening all over the world.

Students were then assigned an art movement and asked to research, interpret and express what the movement means by painting it onto their own deer.

When the deer arrived in the classrooms you could feel a buzz. Students were excited and nervous to paint these children’s toys. They worked hard and over 7 weeks to create ISHCMC’s very own Deer Parade.

desIGN WOrKshOpsAmerican artist and illustrator Kris Kotcher (aka ‘Frenemy’) spent two days at ISHCMC running character design workshops for Grade 6 and Grade 9 students.

Kris began his career as a graffiti artist before finding commercial success as a character illustrator. As well as sharing with students his secret tips on giving their drawings personality, he talked to them about what it was like to carve a career as an artist, and how working for clients (such as Converse Korea) has developed his style.

WIld rhINO COmpetItION WINNer

Catherine Tran and Capucine Moreauhave won the Wild Rhino competition organized by the Forever Wild Wilderness Foundation. The reward is an invitation to visit South Africa and participate in a five day Wilderness Trail and a one day workshop relating to the protection of the rhinos. ISHCMC is extremely proud of Catherine and Capucine for being selected by the Wild Wilderness Foundation. Congratulations again Catherine and Capucine, we hope the memories of this trip will last forever! We would also like to thank Olia Nguyen who was responsible for organising the competition in ISHCMC. Without Olia’s hard work and dedication to her fellow students it could not have taken place.

The leaders and members of the ISHCMC Thien Phuoc Orphanage group want to express their appreciation for your generosity in support of the Tet Food Drive which was a great success. Your donations and commitment were very helpful and allowed us to collect a lot of supplies for the children. To give you an idea, we collected more than:

• 100kg of rice• 15L of oil• 12kg of milk• 15kg of sugar• 50 packs of noodles• 30 packs of diapers

So thank you very much, students, parents, teachers, ISHCMC staff and a special thanks to John and his staff from Global Café who helped us with supplying the food.

Last week I had the pleasure, along with Mr. Coles in taking 12 of our students to Hanoi to participate in the Model United Nation conference at UNIS. We had a representative in each general assembly, one on the Security Council and a student Chairing the special conference on ‘Space - Cooperation, Utilization and Security’. Our ISHCMC students did a wonderful job in their preparation, presentation and debate of resolutions. The level debate taking place on resolutions ranging from same sex marriage to the use of economic sanctions in the context of political coercion was of a very high standard. Reflections from Ryan Kim, Chair of the Special Conference on Space

Although I do not usually use such absolutes, I used one just yesterday while answering a question made by one of my favourite teachers on how the conference was. “It was the best MUN conference I have ever participated in.” I always hate to use the word “best” as there can be a “better” one in the future. But after the seventh annual UNISMUN conference this year, I was sure that no other MUN conference could exceed this one .

This MUN conference was my fourth conference and my first as a Chair. I was overwhelmed to sit in the first row in the opening ceremony along with other student officers from schools across South East Asia. My eyes sparkled with passion to discuss this year’s special topic, ‘Space - Cooperation, Utilization and Security ‘. In my role as Chair person of the special Committee I got to guide and support debate and the passing of resolutions over the 3 days.

At the closing ceremony I announced, “I hereby promise to you all that I will treasure all the moments I spent with you until the very end of space, Thank you, to my fellow ISHCMC delegates for an exceptional experience!

During the course of the previous week, a handful of Model United Nations delegates attended the UNIS Model United Nations Conference of 2015 in Hanoi. The attending group was comprised of a combination of experienced and beginner delegates and this was done in order to try and implement a buddy system whereas beginners were paired up with an experienced member. This way, the experienced delegates would mentor the inexperienced delegates. This system was new for this year as in previous years, the conference would tend to reject the applications of new delegates However, this year, with Ms. Muschamp leading the expedition, any and all wishing to attend were able to apply to be a member of the ISHCMC team.

Truly, the UNISMUN conference was a great experience not only for the sole purpose of enjoying yourself but also to understand how society functions and the model united nations is where people of all ideals, cultures and backgrounds can come together and share these concepts. We, who attended the conference advise everyone who is interested to apply, sign up and not waste a moment more hesitating whether you are good enough or not. This is because, truthfully, anyone can attend and do well.

The 2015 UNISMUN Delegation

The Stingrays started off our two day swim meet with a very strong showing on Saturday. Brad Jones won the 8 & under overall, Claire Hightower and George Condra were 2nd overall in the 11-12 division and the O’dores’ took bronze overall for their age groups.

As a team, we were in a tight competition for second to fifth place. Luckily, we have been working hard and we landed ourselves second overall! We had 126 PB’s and a total of 30 records set!

Again, the swimmers never make my job easy. The Swimmers of the Meet go to Bill Hoang and Anna Fitzgerald. Congratulations on some fantastic swimming.

The Middle School boys and girls Football teams arrived back home safely yesterday after a great tournament. The teams entered Saturday morning playing for positions in the Plate.

To get to the plate final the girls needed a win over HIS, after 10 minutes overtime ISHCMC won a place into the Plate Final by a goal to Rio. This brought a Plate Final against SSIS where ISHCMC won by a resounding 3-0.

The boys were also playing for a position in the Plate Final but unfortunately they came up short (1-2) against UNIS. This then brought up a game against HIS, the boys then completed their tournament with a resounding 4-2 win over HIS. In the final presentation the Boys team was awarded the Sportsmanship trophy. This trophy is voted by all teams competing.

Overall the tournament was a success with some excellent results and some quality performances by our players. A special congratulation goes to Rio and Brandon for making the tournament team.

A big thanks goes to Mr. Hurst, Mr. Dorchak and Ms. Versol for coaching and traveling with the team.

Congratulations Footballers on a great tournament, looking forward to seeing the results from the Senior teams in a few weeks.

Thank you to all those who donated items to last week’s PTO Used Book, Game and Puzzle Sale. It was a great success! It is wonderful to see how much the children enjoy choosing and reading books. In a country with limited access to books this sale is a great way for us to share our resources. Thank you also to all the parents who helped set up and run the sale. It is a huge job sorting and pricing all those books! Class 5E won the pizza party for the most donations and both 2C and 1C will receive a chocolate cake as runners-up.

Money raised from the PTO Used Book, Game and Puzzle sale goes to the PTO General fund. This is the fund from which we pay for all our activities and this includes Family Night, New Parent Welcome events, the Wine and Cheese evening, PTO Holiday tea plus all the costs associated with meetings. We also have administrative costs for other events.

This sale is essentially a community yard sale! So start cleaning out your attic! You can donate used goods to the PTO and we will sell for charity or you can rent your own table and keep the proceeds from your sales. We will accept gently used clothing, toys, games, books, small appliances, kitchenware, home décor items and sporting equipment!

Any unsold items are donated to several children’s homes in HCMC and also to Shop of Hope https://www.facebook.com/shopofhope which sells the items (or re-uses them) to fund their charitable work.
