T he European
Junior Olympiad
in Informatics,
eJOI is a stepping-stone
in the development of
the elite of the IT in-
dustry in the Council of
Europe member states.
eJOI celebrates the en-
thusiasm, inspiration and achievements of the
best young informatics heroes. The purpose of
eJOI is to encourage interest in STEM subjects,
especially programming, among young people.
It is a platform for the most talented young
programmers (aged <15,5) in the Council of
Europe countries. These bright minds compete
to show who is the smartest, the most prepared
and, of course, the luckiest. At the same time
together, they create friendships, which are the
base for a bright future of our Planet. With
eJOI, we engage the IT society of the Council of
Europe and broad public attention with the im-
portance of science and technology for a sus-
tainable future.
Bulgaria has an impressive tradition in Interna-
tional Olympiads in the sciences. The proposal
for the foundation of the International Olympiad
in Informatics (IOI) was made by Prof. Blago-
vest Sendov and supported by UNESCO in
1987. In 1989, Bulgaria became the host of the
very first IOI. Bulgaria was again the host of
the IOI in 2009 – for its 20th anniversary. As of
2017 Bulgaria is ranked fifth in the world by the
number of medals from the IOI. In the individu-
al charts, Bulgarian Hristo Venev holds second
place in the world with four gold and one silver
medal.
On this solid base, eJOI is the beginning of a
new tradition – for the younger competitors,
aged up to 15 and a half. A huge thanks to the
Patrons, Hosts, Sponsors, Contributors, Part-
ners, Volunteers - more than 60 organizations
and more than 100 volunteers that make the
First eJOI in Sofia, Bulgaria, September 7-13,
2017 happen.
Bravo to the 22 countries that take part in the
1st eJOI!
