Principals Message
It never ceases to amaze me the abundance of kindness and generosity our
Stanley Jones community demonstrates each and every day but more particularly
during challenging months for many of our families. This year our students rose to
the occasion yet again and provided much needed items for our 9 sponsored
families including food, toiletries, toys, clothes and gift cards. We delivered the
majority of the items yesterday and each family was incredibly appreciative of the
gifts they received. Thank you to all of you for your incredible support. Production
Revenue Accounting who sponsors Calgary Reads and our Brown Bag lunch
program generously gifted one of our families as well. I hope the attached pictures
will give you a glimpse of just how generous everyone was.
Our Parent Advisory Council is hosting a bottle drive Saturday January 6 to raise
funds in support of student learning initiatives at our school. They will have a truck
parked in the Stanley Jones parking lot from 9 AM – 12 PM. Please save all of
your bottles and milk jugs over the holiday and bring them to the school Saturday,
January 6th. Thanks for your support!
The staff at Stanley Jones and Alice Jamieson would like to wish each and every
one of you a wonderful holiday season and look forward to seeing everyone
January 8, 2018!

January GRIT
Mrs. Schwarz Grade 6 AJA Class
In grade 6 we have been learning about poetry and the variety of figurative language writers use
to make their writing more interesting and convey emotion. The grade 6 students have showed
their grit by engaging in the writing cycle, which often involves rewriting after the students are
given peer and teacher feedback. We learned that good writers get their work edited before it
can be published. Good writers often have to rewrite sentences, passages and even chapters to
create a polished finished product. When we wrote our riddle poems students were challenged
to use similes and metaphors in their writing. Some students challenged themselves to use as
many examples of figurative language in their poems. Students needed to use their inferencing
and critical thinking skills to figure out each other’s Riddle poems. Students used their grit to
write many rough copies before they came to their finished poems. This year, we will continue to
practice using our grit when we engage in the writing process.

Reading to Explore, Construct, and Extend Understanding in
Grade 9 Humanities NOVEL STUDY Grade 9 students are currently reading the novel Touching Spirit Bear. The novel study is divided into four sections. At the end of reading each section, students come together in their literature circle seminar groups to have in depth discussions about the characters, events, and key concepts found in that specific section of the novel. Seminar groups consist of five roles with corresponding tasks: Discussion Director, Summarizer, Connector, Predictor, and Vocabulary Enricher. These tasks, along with assigned chapter questions, are what creates, drives, and encourages the insightful discussion of the novel. Students greatly benefit from questioning and challenging each other as well as sharing their own thoughts, connections, and predictions with their group members. For example, the Connector task requires students to make connections to what they have been reading in the novel to their own life, other texts, as well as what is happening in the world. Other group members are also asked to share their connections. Making these connections is one way to foster our students’ critical thinking skills. GRIT For most students, taking part in literature circle seminar discussions was a new and different way to approach a novel study. As when beginning any new task or challenge, students were a little unsure as to how they could be successful. They received instruction, support, encouragement, and constructive feedback from their teacher during the first and second seminars and by the third seminar, much more insightful discussion was taking place, without a lot prompting from their teacher. Through their seminars, students proved that they have GRIT- they gave it their all, tried to improve, did not give up, and put in the necessary time and effort to prepare for insightful discussions about the text.

Being an Engineer and Showing GRIT
The grade 3 & 4 DHH students have explored building
materials throughout our structures unit. Acting as
Engineers, students participated in labs testing properties of
materials and used a variety of materials to complete
building challenges. After this learning process, students
launched a final project based on their interest in bridges.
Students acted like engineers to apply their knowledge of
material properties, types of bridges, and the building and
design process to design and build a bridge. Students
learned that Engineers change their plan and never give up
when something is not working the way the planned. The
phrase “That didn’t work, I’ll make a different plan” was
overheard often in the classroom during our building time
often.
Our students worked to Grow their GRIT with this project. Our
school defines GRIT as the willingness to:
G - Give it your all.
R - Redo if necessary
I - Ignore giving up
T - Take the time to do right
Here is what Nour said when asked about her project and how she had to change her plan. “I
just made the first one a suspension bridge and it’s too hard to fix it and I changed my mind to
use arch bridge. I used cardboard for pillars. It is strong.”
Students embraced the idea that mistakes help us to learn
and showed they were able to create a new plan when
something wasn’t working. During his building, Jonathan
reflected on how the project helped him Grow his Grit. Here
is what he said: “I still made a suspension bridge. One
time I tried to use the white straws to make pillars but they
were so bendy. It was going to the side and not very
strong. I had to change the materials of it. Doing the cables
and the pillars to hold up the cables was hard. The arch in
the middle makes my bridge strong and stable.”
