NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2015 Happy New Year to all our Newsletter readers, we hope that you all had a good Christmas and are now looking forward to the Spring and Summer, fingers crossed it will be as good as last year. YRDR has had another very busy year, there seems to be more and more abandoned dogs and not just the Heinz variety type, there are a lot of pedigree dogs in rescues. Also this year we have rehomed a lot of unwanted puppies and older dogs, it is always sad when people ask us to rehome old dogs, sometimes it can not be helped, people get ill and can not cope with looking after their dogs but mostly we hear pathetic reasons like we have a new baby and haven’t got the time for the dog or the dog growled at my grandchild, Sue even had one owner tell her that they were moving house and were getting all new carpets so the dog had to go, can you believe that somebody would think so little of their dog. BEWARE ANTIFREEZE AND ROCK SALT Be careful at this time of the year that your pet does not come into contact with antifreeze or rock salt, always wash your dogs paws when you come back from a walk. The symptoms of ingesting anti-freeze include vomiting, seizures, appearing sleepy and a heightened breathing rate. Jack can show his disdain at being left by getting up tomischief whilst you’re out! Ideally we are looking for someone withexperience of the breed.

SOME OF OUR LATEST DOGS TO BE REHOMED

HERBIE

Little Herbie was a physical and mental wreck when Sue Brown went to Bingley to assess him, she couldn't leave him in that environment so she took him home with her and he ended up being fostered by Sue for quite a while.

Sue and Andy brought him back to health and gave him the ability to trusthumans again and Sue found the perfect forever home for him in Harrogate with Lorraine, Steve, Savannah, Sam and their Alsation plus 2 horses. The whole family love Herbie and Sue was a bit tearful when she got this gorgeous Christmas card of him. Don’t you just love a happy ending.

LORENZO

The rather handsome Lorenzo was less then 12 months old when we wereasked if we could help his owner to rehome him, he wasn’t getting the exercise that a young large dog needed. He is certainly getting the exercise now, he lives in Filey with Billy Mcphee and his family and has lovely long runs on the beach.

TINKERBELL

Do you remember little Tinkerbell from the last Newsletter, she was found abandoned in Wibsey at less then twelve months old, she had a broken leg ,ulcerated eye and was badly malnourished. She had to have a fixator on her leg for many weeks until the bone healed. We had to do some serious fund raising to pay the Vet bill.

Another happy ending, she is now called Tinker and lives with Nancy in Scotland, they are lucky enough to live near the beach and Tinker goes there most days, she still might need to have her eye extracted but she is aplucky little thing and enjoys life, here she is sharing her bed with her best friend Gizzy.

UPDATE ON PAST FUNDRAISING EVENTS

RACE NIGHT FRIDAY 27 TH JUNE

This was the first time that we had held the Race Night at Cleckheaton Golf Club and it was a good choice we will be holding our next one there later on in the year. It is a fun night and is always well attended. There was a pie and pea supper and Christine and Rochelle ran a tombola, see the nice photo of them. Some of the guests dressed up for the occasion or we thought that they dressed up maybe they always go out like that who knows. We raised just short of a £1000.

Page 6: NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2015 - YRDR · 2020-06-10 · NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2015 Happy New Year to all our Newsletter readers, we hope that you all had a good Christmas and are now looking

LADIES LUNCH - JULY 2 nd

Pauline Ashton very kindly offered to hold a ladies lunch in her own home and raised nearly £300, I was on holiday so wasn’t able to attend but by all accounts the food was scrummy. A Big Thank you to Pauline for all her hard work.

BIRKENSHAW FIRE STATION GALA - JULY 12TH

We had a stall at the Fire Station Gala, there were small gifts and home made cakes, there was also a guess the name of the dog to win a basket full of goodies. We raised £180.

TREASURE HUNT OAKWELL HALL - JULY 22 nd

We have never organized a Treasure Hunt before so we didn’t know if it would be popular or not. Kathy put a lot of time and effort in, sorting the clues out and printing all the paperwork needed. We got up very early on the Sunday morning and walked around Oakwell placing the clues and arrows showing the 2 different routes. It was a lovely sunny day and therewere plenty of people visiting the park who were quite happy to join in the fun. Janet and her team of helpers were making bacon sandwiches and tea and coffees, so even if people did not want to do the Treasure Hunt they could not resist the aroma of the bacon and just had to buy a sandwich. Christine also did a children’s tombola which was popular. We

raised £531, so all in all it was a successful event and we might have to think about doing another one this year.

BEETLE DRIVE - AUGUST

Pam organized a Beetle Drive and a buffet supper at Cleckheaton Golf Club it was just a small event for 40 people but Pam still raised £280. I have never been to a Beetle Drive before and don’t think I will be going again as I got banned for accusing people of cheating, they had to be cheating as they were making their beetles far too quickly. It is a bit embarrassing getting banned from a charity event.

DOG SHOW - SUNDAY AUGUST 31 ST - OAKWELL HALL

What another fantastic day we had at our 6th Dog Show at Oakwell Hall, Ihave to say that it started off a bit hectic as we had outgrown the lawn in front of the Hall that we have used in previous years and so we decided touse the large field at the back of the barn. We thought that we were very organized and on the Saturday afternoon Kathy and I went down with some spray paint and marked out and numbered all the pitches for the various stalls, thinking that as stall holders turned up we would justcalmly show them to their pitch. But nothing works out as planned, the field is sloping and the grass was wet with the morning dew, people couldnot get their cars to the pitches to off load their goods. We quickly had to re think our plans and thanks to Kathy’s work colleague Eddie and Amanda one of the rangers at Oakwell we managed to relocate all the stalls.

The weather once again was gorgeous, which meant that we had a great turn out of people and of course dogs in all shapes and sizes, from tiny Chihuahua’s to large Rottweiler’s.

Companion Care Vets attended, and were giving free mini health checks and you could have a chat with them about any worries that you had about your dog.

Page 8: NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2015 - YRDR · 2020-06-10 · NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2015 Happy New Year to all our Newsletter readers, we hope that you all had a good Christmas and are now looking

Kelrose Dog Training, who always support us by sponsoring the rosettes, were doing have a go Fly Ball, which a lot of people said their dogs enjoyed.

The Dogs Trust attended and microchipped dogs for free.

We had plenty of stalls selling various items, there were tombola’s for everybody, this year we had an adult one, a children’s one and of course adoggie one which is always popular. Enza also did some face painting.

There was also a Burger Van, a posh coffee van, homemade cakes, buns and biscuits and Danny from the Scotland Pub set up a bar.

One of our favourite classes is the fancy dress, we had an excellent turn out this year. Here are some of my favourites, Joe with his dog May won 1st prize with Lego, then we had a Hot Dog, a Santa Claus and a Dashing Cavalier.

Page 9: NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2015 - YRDR · 2020-06-10 · NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2015 Happy New Year to all our Newsletter readers, we hope that you all had a good Christmas and are now looking

I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to everybody who helped to make this event so successful, from the people who sponsored the classes to the people on car parking duties and all the people in between, far too many to mention individually but they know who they are and how much we appreciate their help. Another BIG THANK YOU to all the people who supported us by attending. It is a lot of hard work organizing the Dog Show but it makes it all worth while when we had such a good day and we raised £3568, which is an excellent amount.

CHRISTMAS FAIR - 9 th NOVEMBER – GOMERSAL HALL

We had a stall at the Christmas Fair at Gomersal Hall, Kathy made up some nice Christmassy stocking fillers which were popular and we raised £150.

Page 10: NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2015 - YRDR · 2020-06-10 · NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2015 Happy New Year to all our Newsletter readers, we hope that you all had a good Christmas and are now looking

SIXTH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS EVENT – 6 TH DECEMBER

On the 6th December we held our annual Christmas get together at the Golf Club in Cleckheaton. As always everybody had a good time, the food was excellent, there was a table full to bursting with raffle prizes, weheld a secret auction and there was a disco until midnight

Janet with help from other YRDR volunteers organized this event and what a good job they did, we raised £1709. A big THANK YOU to everybody who donated the raffle and auction prizes and to all the people who attended and made this such an enjoyable evening.

The only small problem was that too many people wanted to attend and the seating was a bit squashed, so this year we are keeping it to 100 people as previous years, it is already booked for December 5th, so pop that date in your diaries.

JEAN SAINSBURY ANIMAL WELFARE TRUST

The Jean Sainsbury Animal welfare Trust was set up in 1982 by Mrs JeanBeryl Lillian Sainsbury after she had been left a very large inheritance by her father, so far it has donated more then five million pounds to charities.

Kathy applied to them for a grant and sent off all the relevant paper work and they very kindly awarded us £4000. We were very grateful for this donation as we had a lot of large Vet Bills to pay.

We are extremely grateful to everybody who donates and raises funds for us, as all the dogs that come into our care are neutered, microchipped, flead, wormed and checked by the Vet and receive any treatment that is needed.

The following have recently donated or fund raised for us, if I have missed anybody out I apologise.

Kathy, Christine and I held a stall at the Birstal Gala in August and raised

£189.

Pauline, a friend of Sue’s donated £40. I will have to find out Pauline’s surname, I can not keep saying a friend of Sue’s.

Abigail whose family adopted Robbie the Rottweiler from YRDR did the Ice Bucket Challenge and donated £5.

Yorkshire Animals Lost and Found held a raffle and donated £30.

Janet organized a Big Breakfast in the barn at Oakwell Hall, I wasn’t ableto attend but heard that it was a bit stressful as the electric was overloadedand the fuses kept blowing, so although Janet raised £450 I think that in future she will be going back to cooking the very successful Big Breakfasts in her own kitchen.

Christine North had a pre Christmas girls get together in her home, she provided lovely food and drinks and there was also a raffle, she raised£250.

PETS AT HOME VIP CLUB

For those of you who have nominated Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue as the charity you want to receive your Pets at Home VIP Lifeline points - we have just received a voucher from them for the last quarter for £40!!We normally get £30 or £40 every quarter and this is down to YOU - our supporters so thank you very much! This voucher will be used to buy little Maria a new coat.Maria is a gorgeous little 6yr old staffie. Rescued from an abusive life and has had several homes - she was walking strangely and seemed too lethargic when we visited her so it turned from an assessment into bundling her into the back of the car and getting her to safety!! After x-rays (and a dental) it appears she has arthritis in her spine so she'son long term metacam. Why is it that the most abused dogs are often the most sweet and loving? This dog is a little darling! She needs a coat though as anyone who knows staffies will know that they just do not do rain, wind and cold!!!!

who goes out walking needs to invest in a pair of Yaktrax, one size fits most from adult’s size 4 to 11 they have a Velcro strap to fit over your boots or wellingtons. We could not have managed to walk our dogs in theicy conditions for the past four years without them. A lot of places are stocking them now, walking shops, go outdoors, Amazon. Don’t buy the cheap alternatives they are not as good.

DOG THEFT

Dog Theft is rife at the moment, please never leave your dogs unattended in the garden and always be watchful when you are out on a walk. There are stories of men walking around popular dog walking areas with a lead in their hands and a pocket full of treats just looking for the opportunity to snatch a dog.

UNWANTED CHRISTMAS GIFTS

If you have any unwanted Christmas Gifts please recycle them our way, we use them for tombola and raffle prizes, we raise quite a lot of money this way at the various events throughout the year.
