I met a friend , a surgeon who spent a month in a large institution to improve his skills, just to be competitive enough in a mission hospital. It is important that our professionals continue to improve their knowledge base and skill sets. This is difficult as many of our institutions find it not easy to spare their professionals' time for skill development amidst competing priorities. In my view, the third issue can be tackled. We can work on models to improve the capability. The first two are attributes, difficult to develop unless learnt from role models, families and from the Church. The best role model is Christ and unless there is His interaction in one's life, we may not see these reflected in one's work. The harvest is plenty, the laborers are few. We pray that the Lord will send more laborers who have all these “three”. We wish you and your families a bright and highly enriching New Year in the Lord's work!

DEVOTION

ohn the Baptist was commissioned by J God to perform a specific role for Him. He came as God's messenger doing God's business. Similarly, each one of us has been “sent by God” into this world for a specific plan and purpose.

Just because God's people like Moses, John the Baptist and Paul had a specific mission and role to perform doesn't make us lesser even though we never saw God in a burning bush or received our commission directly from His lips. No angel came before our birth to announce what we were to do in this world. We had no revelation of bright glory causing us to become blind. Nevertheless we are indeed “sent by God,” with a definite task, just as Moses, John, or Paul. Are we living out God's purpose for us -- what He had in mind when He created us and placed us here?

These are important questions requiring honest answers. Any life that does not accomplish the purpose of God in this world is a failure. We find our work and our mission by simple obedience and submission to God. He first prepares us for the mission and at the right time leads us into it. We are failing our mission in this world by doing our own thing.

The New Year is unknown to us. But if we walk closer with God we will definitely know what our mission for 2013 is. Let us leave the old year with gratitude to God for its mercies, and penitence for its failures and sins. Let us start the New Year remembering that each one has been sent by God with a special purpose and mission. In Christ's name let's make it the year in which we fulfill His calling and purpose for our lives.

A Plan for Each Life

y recent interactions and travel gave me several insights that significantly contribute Mto the survival and mission of our ministry. A few core elements I choose to highlight and would call them 3-Cs – Conviction, Commitment and Capability.

I have come across young leaders who were convinced that there is need for Christian professionals to continue in the healing ministry. I have met young leaders who have stayed with the Church against all odds to continue to serve or even come back and serve the poor and the marginalised. I was inspired by their convictions and the belief in Christ's mission. They not only do the healing ministry, but have visions of a comprehensive – preaching, teaching and healing ministry. I have seen schools being built for rural students, the nearby church being renovated besides new building and equipments for the hospital. I said Hallelujah! That was for the moment. I had to praise God for the Conviction. I was equally dismayed to hear the difficulties he was put into by the local congregation – their interference in the governance and physical occupation of the property.

I have also witnessed commitment issues. Christian institutions are known for highly committed staff. This breed is being replaced by ones whose commitment is to the cost and compensation. In simple terms you pay me, I will work. While we should compensate our staff reasonably well, good compensation alone will not get us the commitment required for our mission. The ability to give extra hours, perfection, reducing wastage, foregoing personal comforts and priorities are qualities that are built over the years and cannot be bought. I came across a person who had put up a huge shamiana for a prayer meeting. Besides doing a fantastic job, I found a beautiful cross on the roof. This was not in the package and when asked why the contractor did this extra work, his reply was – “This is the Lord's work. This should be grand.” He was not a Christian!

I have observed capability issues in the human resource.

The harvest is plenty, the laborers are few. of their call and commitment to the vocation of transforming lives.b) The Challenge Session – led by Dr

George 'Laji' Varghese, who challenged the participants to be honest to self and to God in their desires to serve, wherever they want to serve. And to do this by asking the most pertinent question, “What is our motivating factor, what is the driving force for each of us, to do what we are doing?”

c) Paper Presentation SessionThe list of the papers presented during the conference is as follows:

Paediatric Congenital Heat Disease Screening – Dr Mani Varghese; Muscle S p a s m a n d M u s c l e M i g r a i n e – Dr Abhay Salve; Congregation-based Holistic Care – Dr Mathew Tharian; Nurse-led STI Management – Dr Joyce Angami; Dental work among HIV patients – Dr Anitha David / Dr Sujoya Thogaru; Scope of Dentistry in Mission Hospitals – Dr Anitha David / Dr SujoyaThogaru.

d) The Technical Session topics included ENT in Mission Hospitals by Dr Anand Job from CMC, Vellore, who focused on dealing with ENT cases where there were no specialists and “Quality in Mission Hospitals” which was an interactive session moderated by Dr Sudhir Joseph and resource provided by Dr Alexander Thomas, Director, BBH, Bengaluru.

e) The Business Session where members met and discussed the future of activities of the Section and looked at ways of ensuring greater participation from other members of the Section.

The second day of the conference was hosted by the Department of Health and Family Welfare of Nagaland in the capital city of Kohima. The participants were addressed by the Commissioner (Health) and Director (Health Services) who spoke about the various activities and schemes they were involved in.

he 2½ day National Conference of the TDoctors Section of CMAI on the theme Transforming Lives was held between 15-17 November 2012 at the Christian Institute for Health Science and Research, Dimapur, Nagaland. Around 35 doctors from across the country and an equal number of doctors from CIHSR and hospitals in Dimapur attended the conference.

The devotions were led by Rev Dr Roger Gaikwad of NCCI. He spoke on Transforming Lives using the example of Jesus and His transforming power in the way He identified with the sick and needy.

The conference was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Honourable Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, Government of Nagaland. The Minister appealed to all to establish linkages which could bring the government, NGOs and healthcare providers together to achieve the objective of providing safe and affordable healthcare especially to the poorer sections of society. He also suggested that doctors and nurses should bring about a paradigm shift in attitude and behaviour towards patients who needed more “love, care and compassion”.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sudhir Joseph, President, CMAI, suggested that it was “high time” that Nagaland had a working Christian university. Dr Bimal Charles, General Secretary, CMAI, spoke on the current situation and future of CMAI doctors pointing out that doctors were not the only ones to make a hospital function but must work “hand in hand” with other sectors including the government.

The Keynote Address was given by Dr Abraham Joseph, Director, CIHSR, who spoke about transformation not being a one-time event but an on-going process as seen in the “life cycle of a butterfly”. He asserted that doctors had a role to transform the lives of others much more than any other vocation.

The other key sessions were:

a) Spiritual Upliftment – Rev Roger encouraged participants and reminded them

[email protected]

Dear Friends,

Greetings in His name!

It's the season to be thankful for all the blessings we have received. I extend my warmest wishes and goodwill to all who have been part of this organisation, making it what It is today. As the winter sets in with its chill, I hope that all that ended well in the outgoing year will warm your hearts.

thThe 67 National Conference of the NL thcompleted on 17 October. It was

wonderful to meet delegates from different parts of the country and abroad. A detailed report is published alongside this column.

I attended the consultation meeting organised by Dr Anil Henry at Evangelical

Hospital, Mungeli, on 13 October 2012. This was to explore the possible role of nurse practitioners in mission hospitals. This is being done to meet the burning need for human resources in our Christian rural mission hospitals.

I had the privilege of visiting Christian Hospital, Mungeli, Evangelical Hospital, Tilda, and Christian Hospital, Dhamtari. It was a joy to be with our dear people and enjoy their love and hospitality. Praise God for their marvellous work with limited resources. Let us continue to uphold our mission hospitals in prayers as their needs are enormous.

Also, with a heavy heart I inform you about the sudden demise of Ms Subhashini Singh, Principal, GSN, Indore. Please uphold her near and dear ones in your prayers.

We are looking for a new Principal for MIBE, GSN. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Mrs Mercy John, Principal, SON, Bissamcuttack, for her tremendous support to MIBE both as Secretary, MIBE, and as Principal, GSN. She has acted as an anchor during these stormy tides of life. Our special thanks to Dr Johnny and the management of Christian Hospital, Bissasmcuttack, for relieving her of her responsibilities so she could make herself available to help MIBE and GSN. The newly appointed Secretary, MIBE – Mrs Shimy Mathew – will be the Acting Principal till we appoint the new Principal for GSN. If you come across a suitable candidate please refer their names to CMAI and at the same time please keep this matter in your prayers.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year!

With regards & prayers,

On Day 1, the morning devotion was led by Dr A K Lama, General Secretary, CBCNEI. He provided a thoughtful Biblical exposition from the life of Gideon. This was followed by the inaugural function. Mr Stephen Victor welcomed the gathering. Fr Johnson, Director, DBI, inaugurated the Conference and Dr Bimal Charles gave the Keynote Address. Mr Samuel Abraham, Chairperson, Administrators Section, CMAI, offered felicitations.

There was inspiring singing led by the choir of the nursing students of 4B Satribari Hospital. The spectacular view of the Brahmaputra River from the Conference Hall provided the right ambience to the sessions.

Scientific Session I“Talent Management by Jesus” was taken by Dr P L N Raju and Mr Melvin Moras, who presented a Biblical perspective on how Lord Jesus took simple people and converted them into highly effective people.

Scientific Session II “Change Management” was taken by Mr Solanki of Tezpur Christian Hospital, Assam. This erstwhile closed hospital presented its success story and how they are now making efforts to maintain the good work.

Scientific Session III“Ten Home Energy Conservation Tips” was taken by Mr Stephen Victor, who presented a set of inexpensive tips that could save energy leading to substantial energy costs.

Mr Samuel Abraham presented a case law related to prescription of medicine by medical professionals. This highl ighted the importance of careful recording of all the instructions given to patients which can go a long way in defending medical practitioners in case of unwanted litigations.

On Day 2, there was a very meaningful devotion by Rev Merin Mathew, Vicar of the Marthoma Church.

Scientific Session IVMr Samuel N J David gave an analysis of an ideal salary structure. This gave valuable inputs to many of the participants in fixing salaries in their own institutions.

“Systems Approach for Website Review” was dealt with by Mr Augustine P Aiyadurai. Mr Aiyadurai enlightened the participants regarding the methodologies to be adopted to have relevant and current information on the websites.

Scientific Session V“Financial Sustainability of Mission Hospitals” was dealt with by Mr Surjit Pal and Mr Vijay Prathap, who provided insights into meeting the challenges of financial sustainability.

Mr Stephen Victor set the tone for discussions on arriving at an ideal

organisational chart. The participants were divided into four groups. Two of them prepared an organisational chart for a 50 bedded single specialty hospital and the other two groups worked out the chart for a 200 bedded multi-specialty hospital.

General Body Meeting This was led by Mr Samuel Abraham, the Chairperson. The report of the Secretary was accepted with apprecia-tion. Members were urged to

take all necessary steps to enlist more members. One of the major points of observation from the floor of the house was the need for appointing a separate person for Institutional Development Desk.

Cultural ProgrammeAll the participants were taken for a cruise on the Brahmaputra in the evening. This was followed by a cultural evening.

Scientific Session VI was held on Day 3. Mr Manesh Mathew, Founder & CEO, Medallion Hospital Consulting Pvt. Ltd. and Ms Thingngamphy Vashum, HR Depart-ment, CIHSR, Dimapur, Nagaland, jointly presented a paper on "Employee Feedback Mechanism". This has been successfully implemented in the Christian Institute of Health Science Research (CIHSR), Dimapur, Nagaland. They shared the methodologies of implementation and gave insights into the nuances of this process.

The Conference had a fitting conclusion with the Holy Communion Service led by Rev Michael, Pastor, CNI Church, Guwahati.

National Conference of the Administrators Section

Dear Members,

Greetings from the Administrators Section of CMAI!

Medical care is becoming commercialised day-by-day and is driven by a strong profit motive. This has led to the brushing aside of several issues which are of interest to the patients. One of them is patient safety. Considering its importance, we have devoted one whole issue of Clipboard to patient safety. This issue has already come out. In case you have not received it, please send me a request by email. We would be glad to send you an e-copy.

I wish to thank all those who participated in the National Conference of the Administrators' Section which was held in Guwahati from 11 to 13 October 2012 at Don Bosco Institute which is located on the banks of the river Brahmaputra. The beauty of God's creation provided the perfect ambience for the conference. There was tremendous scope for learning experiences as there were eight technical sessions. A brief report of the conference is published alongside this column.

During the period October to November 2012, I could visit the following institutions and encourage them in several ways:

1. Baptist Hospital, Tezpur, Assam2. Burrows Memorial Christian Hospital, Alipur, Assam3. Emmanuel Rural Hospital, Pailapool, Assam4. Champa Christian Hospital, Champa, Chhattisgarh5. Evangelical Mission Hospital, Khariar, Orissa6. Dhamtari Christian Hospital, Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh7. N M Wadia Hospital, Pune, Maharashtra

On behalf of the Administrators Section, I wish you all God's blessings for the New Year 2013.

th14 National Conference of All ied Health Professionals Section

he Allied Health Professionals' TNational Conference was held at the Grand Hotel, Agra, Uttar Pradesh, from 2

to 4 November 2012. There were 74 registered participants for the conference. The main highlights were:

Praise and WorshipThroughout the conference, the praise and worship was led by a group from St Stephen's Hospital, Delhi.

Devotions The first day's devotion was taken by Mr Praveen from Scripture Union of Agra Division. He spoke about Revelations 3:8 and insisted that many of the churches as well as Christians act as if they are alive but in fact they are spiritually dead.

The second day's devotion was led by Dr Anand Vijay Kumar, former AHP Secretary. He spoke about personal transformation – how it occurs in one's life.

The third was a Sunday Morning Service. The Chief Guest was the Bishop of Agra Diocese, Rt Rev S R Cutting. He enumerated the will of God to transform humanity by His matchless love.

Inaugural SessionThe Inaugural Session was very successful. Dr Kiran Katoch, Director, Jalma Institute, Agra, inaugurated the conference by lighting the lamp. All dignitaries on the dais partook in the inauguration. Dr Anand Vijay Kumar said the opening prayer. The AHP Secretary welcomed the dignitaries, delegates and the invited guests. The General Secretary brought greetings and shared about the recent developments in CMAI. Dr Sudhir Joseph, President, CMAI, gave the President's Address and felicitated the occasion. Scientific SessionThe scientific session was chaired by Dr Jasper Daniel, former Professor, Microbiol-ogy, and General Superintendent, CMC, Vellore. It is very difficult to conduct scientific sessions for the AHP Section as it's a multi-disciplinary group. This session was actually scheduled for the morning of the first day but was postponed to the second day as the North-bound trains were delayed unusually.

Other SessionsThere was a general session handled by the AHP Secretary which was related to educa-tional innovations in the allied health profession. This was followed by a group discussion which was very fruitful. Four group leaders shared future recommendations and suggestions from the delegates.

Cultural ProgrammeThe cultural programme was planned and arranged by Dr Anita Anand, Professor, St John's College, Agra. Dr Andrew from the same college also helped us to present some special numbers by new converts in Agra.

General Body MeetingThere was a general body meeting on the second day. The previous minutes and the AHP Secretary's report were accepted with appreciation. The main discussion was about the next venue which was finalised for Ahmedabad, Gujarat, or Bangalore, Karnataka.

Valedictory FunctionThe Chief Guest for the Valedictory function was Rt Rev S R Cutting, Bishop, CNI, Agra Diocese. He gave God's message. He concluded the Conference with prayer and benediction.

My dear Colleagues in His Vineyard!

I specially pray that all the allied health professionals will have a successful year ahead. We are glad to announce the good news about the launching of a new programme called Urology Technology under the guidance of the consultants from CMC, Vellore. The first batch will be admitted at CMC, Vellore, in this academic year. I request our members to pass on this information to other mission hospitals to take up the new training programmes that are listed here below:

1. Urology Technology

2. Dialysis Technology

3. Gastro Intestinal EndoscopicTechnology

4. Podiatric Technology

If anyone has any clarifications about the above courses, they may write to me and I would be happy to send further details.

I am sure most of you have seen an advertisement for a new AHP Secretary in the previous issue. I hereby inform our members that I will be retiring in the month of April this year. Please pray well, so that we would be able to find a suitable candidate to shoulder this responsibility and take our allied health professionals to greater heights.

As per the recent leadership changes at IGNOU, there will not be any admissions this year also. There will be admissions from January 2014 under open distance learning mode. We will have discussions with our course coordinators about the future course of action.

We are planning alternative arrange-ments for the degree programmes in allied health in this academic year itself. We will share with all when it is finalised.

With prayers and best wishes,

Dear Friends,

I wish you all a very happy New Year! May it be a year having renewed vision and commitment towards the Healing Ministry.

I am also happy to inform you that the Executive Committee of the Chaplains

Section will meet on 21 January 2013 at Vishranthi Nilayam, Bangalore. We hope this meeting will give future direction for the Section. I would also like to share some of the decisions taken during the Annual General Body Meet ing at Bangalore on 27 September 2012.

Offering collected during the Healing Ministry Sunday can be sent to CMAI office, Delhi, by demand draft. DOT – Be Sure to Cure n 16 March 2012, Mrs OSidaris Talang and Mr

Heibhahlang Lytan – members

of the Jaintia Tuberculosis

Forum – conducted an aware-

ness programme on TB care

and prevention for a group of

TB patients in Pamanik

village, Jaintia Hills District.

Mr Phom Pakma, Mr Milal Suchiang and Mr Pran Pakma were found to be suffering from TB and were under treatment at a local private practitioner and not RNTCP. Their perception was that private doctors treat TB better than government hospitals as in a government hospital many patients relapse for long treatment. Many retrieved patients namely Mr Chia Pakma, Mr Apbimon Talang, Mrs Chin Suchiang and Mr Wanbeit Talang were also part of this. They had discontinued treatment but with the coun-selling of Mrs Sidaris Talang they are now continuing their treatment in the sub centre and are feeling better every day. With witness and discus-sion they could be motivated and are now enrolled for DOT under RNTCP. This was made possible because of counseling, dialogue and advocacy by the Jaintia Hills TB Forum.

After the fall she was taken to a multispeciality hospital in Benaras, where she was advised surgery by the orthopaedic doctor. However, the cardiologists and nephro- logists explained to the

relatives about the high chances of death on the table or that she may go for dialysis. After keeping her in the hospital for about three weeks, they got her back home and kept her in the bed with traction.

Once the son came to us with all the reports, we informed him about the high risk involved in the surgery and that we lacked all the facilities needed for this patient. As the patient was from Robertsganj, her family knew about the limitations of the hospital. The patient was admitted after explaining to her son that we would prayerfully proceed for the surgery.

As a medical team we (physician and anaesthetist) tried to make her as fit for the surgery as possible. On the day of surgery we specially prayed for her in the chapel. By God's grace there was absolutely no problem during anaesthesia, surgery and post-op period. We praise God for letting the patient and relatives know about the power and presence of God in our hospital.

75-year-old patient with multiple complications successfully operated upon.

Jiwan Jyoti Christian Hospital is a unit of EHA and was started by missionaries from UK at Robertsganj, 90 km east of Varanasi. Being a border district, we cater to the health needs of five states and get several complicated cases. One such case is mentioned below.

She had many co-morbid conditions like hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dysfunctioning kidneys and a problem with the heart rhythm (for which she was on the anticoagulant, Warfarin). A few months back she was admitted in our hospital and we referred her for the uncontrolled heart rate which

Mrs K, or the Mitra Residential School Kachapaju, is a unique tribal school, 18 km from Bissamcuttack, started jointly by an association of 16 hill-tribe villages and Christian Hospital, Bissamcuttack, in 1998. With up to 155 children in Classes 1 to 5 the majority of whom stay at the School, MRSK provides a platform for growth true to the ethos of the tribal community.

On popular demand from its old students, in 2004, MRSK started hosting an alumnus meet every October. After a two year gap,

ththe 7 such meeting was held in MRSK on 29 October 2012. Around 165 children from different batches spent a day catching up and sharing experiences. So far, 10 batches of students have completed class 5 from MRSK. This is about 247 children. It was exciting to hear and learn about where they are today and what they are doing.
