Principal’s message
Parent/teacher Interviews We will be hosting our Term 1 parent / teacher
interviews on Monday 8th April from 3:30 – 6:30pm. All
students have been provided with booking sheets that
can be used to reserve an appointment to talk to staff.
This is an excellent opportunity to discuss how your child
is progressing at school and highlight successes and areas
for concern.
Year 8 South Coast Excursion At the time of writing, our Year 8 cohort is away on the
annual Year 8 excursion to Victoria’s South Coast. They
will spend their time exploring the Warrnambool area
and experience the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve
Apostles. I wish them well on their adventure and look
forward to hearing all about it when they return to
school
Annual School Report The Annual School Report will be posted to our website
over the holidays. It is a synopsis of the 2018 academic
year at Barham High School.
ANZAC Day ANZAC Day will fall during the second week of the
holidays. As usual, Barham High School will be
participating in the march to commemorate those who
have fallen in the protection of our nation and way of life.
I would like to encourage members of our school
community to join me in the march and request that
parents encourage their children to don their school
uniforms and march with pride. We will be holding our
ANZAC day commemoration on Tuesday 30th April.
Students and staff from Barham Public School and
Wakool/Burraboi Public School will be joining us for this
special service.
Happy Easter/Holidays I would like to take this opportunity to wish our entire
school community a very happy Easter as well as a
fantastic school holiday break. I will be taking long
service leave next week and will be leaving the school in
the very capable hands of Mr Yu. Students are expected
to return to school on Tuesday 30th April.

North West School Shoot
On Monday 20th March, twelve students participated in the North West School Shoot at the Bar-rook Field and Game club. The students participated in two rounds of clay target shooting. They had 24 clay targets to shoot. The highest score for the day was 19 out of 24 clay targets. Our school team had pleasing results and showed great improvement since last year. Some notable achievements for the day were: Matthew Miller hit 16 clay targets. He was equal first in the Junior Boys non-member and had to shoot off against another participant. Matthew won the shoot off and gained first place. Hayden Sleep hit 14 clay targets and placed 3rd in the Junior Boys non-member category. Lauren Gleeson hit 12 clay targets and placed 2nd in the Senior Girls category. The students also entered the competition as teams. Felicity Macauley and Lauren Gleeson made up the Senior Girls team and they came in 2nd place. Hayden Sleep, Matthew Miller and Jack Lake made up the Junior Boys member team and they came in 2nd place. Jack Hollins, Dylan Maher and Aiden Vaughan made up the Junior Boys non-member team and they came in 2nd place. Shooting has proven to be a very popular sport this term. Twenty-one students are doing shooting each week. We are very grateful that the excellent coaches from the Bar-rook Field and Game club continue to help our students improve their skills. There will be more opportunities for students to participate in shooting competitions later this year.

PDHPE Report Year 7 Students are still learning about the concept of “identity” and how it will change and be shaped as they enter high school. They have just completed their first assessment task for the theory component and in practical lessons they have been refining their movement skills such as catching and throwing and utilising these movement skills through modified games.
Year 8 Students have been learning about nutrients and the five food groups. They have recently created a 7-Day Meal plan, which incorporates all of the five food groups. Students are also learning the basic movement skills used in Tee-ball and practising these movements to become better participants.
Stage 5 (Years 9/10) Students are learning about interpersonal and intrapersonal skills and how they shape and form safe and respectful relationships. The recent visit from Paul Ebsworth Police Liaison Officer reinforced this concept. In practical lessons students have been playing a variety of invasion games to help them become critical thinkers and to allow them to use strategy and tactics during invasion games.
Year 11 In Year 11 PDH students have been busy studying about the four main body systems and how they all work together to influence and respond to movement. They are currently studying Core 2, which is Body in Motion.
Year 12 Year 12 PDH have been studying the Core 2 unit: Factors that Affect Performance. Specifically, students have been learning about energy systems, types and methods of training, principles of training and physiological adaptations in response to training. They have just submitted their assessment task.
Regional Swimming
On Sunday the 3rd of March, thirteen of Barham High School’s elite swimmers departed for Leeton for the Regional Swimming Carnival. Mr Wren had an eye-opening car trip, learning that some students definitely needed singing lessons. After staying the night in Leeton, featuring a delicious barbeque dinner and a swim at the motel pool, we were ready for the carnival on Monday. We had some terrific results with almost all of our students improving on their times from Deniliquin’s Zone Carnival. Unfortunately, we had no State qualifiers, but as mentioned, almost all competitors improved on their previous times. A massive thank you goes to the parents who accompanied us on the trip, Sharon McInnes, Kylie McGowan, Kylie Molin, Greg Lake, Merv Membrey and Peta Short. Congratulations to the following students who made up the team: Kirby Bott, Madison Eames-Gregory, Alyssa Farrant, Sophie Fasham, Jack Lake, Angus Laskowski, Nathaniel Leonard, Leonard McClay, Jye McGowan, Samual Membrey, Lily Molin, Claudia Short and Claire Telford.
Open Girls Soccer The Open Girls Soccer team travelled to Deniliquin for their annual soccer gala day. The first game against Finley commenced with a bang when Amy Salter scored the first goal and unfortunately that was the only goal we scored in the first game. Finley was too strong for us and we went down 3-1. Our second game was against Hay and again we started well. Amy scored the first goal and this built up momentum for Brooke Whelan to score our second goal. We ended the game with a 2 all draw. Overall, the team behaved exceptionally well and represented the school with pride. They all participated and showed great sportsmanship to their female counterparts.

TAS Report Year 7 Students in Year 7 for Tech Mandatory are starting to come to the end of their unit of work and are in the final stages of completing project work. I have seen some well thought out and constructed self-watering herb planters in the Food and Agriculture classes as well as some high quality and creative phone cases made with felting techniques for the Textiles classes.
Year 8 In Year 8, Technology students have been working on their metal tea light lanterns and have recently submitted some high-quality written assessment work. Students were able to choose their own form of assessment picking which activities they wanted to attempt from a variety of different tasks including creating a mood board, a radio advertisement, researching mining, producing a kahoot or quizlet, or designing a new product out of an old mobile phone.
Students in Year 8 STEM lessons have been very hands
on in undertaking some work using perimeter, with the
playground becoming a real space to complete and work
out real life perimeter calculations. They then brushed
up on some special awareness using tangrams to create
a variety of shapes and puzzles.
Stage 5 Students in Stage 5 Food Technology have been undertaking a unit of work on Food Selection and Health, looking at nutrition and working on an assessment that involves modifying a recipe to suit specific nutritional needs. This week in practical lessons, they made a healthy San Choy Bou recipe.
Years 11 and 12 Years 11/12 Hospitality students have been running a simulated café during their extension classes with students being divided into front of house staff, kitchen operations staff and bar staff each lesson. The simulation provides students the opportunity to collect photographic evidence of their skill development to enable to them to collate and produce competency assessment portfolios. The last simulated café will run for the term in week 10.

Science/Vis Arts/Careers Report With the end of the term drawing near, it is very busy in
the Science/Visual Arts/Careers faculty.
Year 7
Students recently completed their first Science
assessment task, a practical test and survived! All
students are to be commended on the way they worked
productively with their designated partner and
attempted all questions to the best of their ability. They
should be proud of their efforts and will have their
results back before the end of term.
Year 8
Students leave Wednesday 3rd April at 8am to travel to
Warrnambool for their annual South Coast excursion.
Students and parents/carers are reminded that full
payment and completed permission notes MUST be
submitted BEFORE we leave. Students will complete a
workbook, as part of their assessment schedule and
submit it to their teachers before disembarking the bus
on our return to school Friday 5th at about 8pm. Parents
are also reminded to check their child’s bag and
complete the bag check note for the student to hand-in
Wednesday morning. Students can take a mobile phone
but it will be collected and only distributed to the
students during ‘free time’. If there are any concerns or
questions please contact Mrs Farrant during school
hours.
Stage 5
Students are continuing work on the immune system
and looking closely into infectious and non-infectious
diseases. Soon they will be given a research task where
they are to design a factual pamphlet/infographic on a
biotechnology of their choice. They will also be asked to
describe the advantages and disadvantages of this
biotechnology and to express and justify their opinion of
its use.
Year 11
The first assessment task for all Year 11 is a practical test
– the Biology class have completed theirs, Chemistry is
on next week and Investigating Science is early next
term. Term 1 has been a challenging term for most of
Year 11 as they have adjusted to the unexpected
demands of senior school. They are all encouraged to
consistently work hard and seek teacher assistance when
necessary, to avoid unnecessary stress.
Year 12
Science students are halfway through their courses and
assessment schedule and should have developed a solid
revision program by now. All students are encouraged to
seek teacher assistance and feedback as they continue
to refine their summaries and prepare for their exams.

Careers
Defence Force Visit
The Defence Forces are visiting the school on Monday
the 25th of March at 2:20pm. This is a great opportunity
for students that are considering the defence forces or
are unsure of what they would like to do.
Work Experience
Year 10 Work Experience is fast approaching. It takes
place from 27th to 31st May. Parent/Student/Career
Adviser interviews will take place at the beginning of
Week 10. If you still haven’t returned your paperwork in
regards to this please do so ASAP. The due date for the
paperwork is 21/3/2019. Students also have a task that
is due on the 28/3/19. This module is a mandatory unit
of work that needs to be completed before students are
allowed to attend work experience. They also have to
complete an online test. Students have had four periods
at school to work on this task.
White Card Course
This is taking place at school on Thursday 4th April for the
relevant Years 10 & 11 students. Students need to
complete a White Card course before the
commencement of work experience if they are working
on any type of construction course. A cost is involved to
complete this course and notes will be distributed on the
21/3/19. If you are unsure whether you need to
complete this course, think about the potential careers
that you may want to pursue and keep in mind there are
two work experience blocks. Anyone that enters or
works on any type of construction site (builder, plumber,
electrician, site manager, supervisor, surveyor, labourer
etc.) requires a White Card.
