One of the nicest things about living at Elim Park are the residents who share their talents and time by volunteering for various activities. Ellen Flaherty is a perfect example. Anyone visiting our Wellness Center – wheth- er to swim in the 30’x60’ warm water pool, take in an exercise class, use our state-of-the-art equipment, or visit the brand-new hair salon location – can wave a friendly “hello” to Ellen and stop for a visit. Ellen volunteers as a part-time re- ceptionist to stay busy. She has heard many compliments about the salon’s new layout and sunny views over- looking the woods. The salon, named Nouvelles Creations, helps give the whole Wellness Center a “spa” feeling. So next time you’re at the Well- ness Center, stop by and ask Ellen. “This is a great place to live. There’s so much to do. Wonderful people to meet. There’s no reason to be bored.” She’s got that right! Service, Far and Near Wayne brings years of experience as a chaplain to our neighborhood. He served 20 years as a firefighters chaplain in Charlotte, NC, where he was the founding chaplain, and in Meriden, CT. Margaret was also deep- ly involved in supporting the fire fighting community and was recently awarded a medal from the Fellowship of Christian Firefighters for her work in establishing their Christian disciple- ship ministry. As Wayne aptly puts it, “I’m the preacher. Margaret is the entrepreneur.” The Detzler’s missionary work abroad has brought enrichment to so many lives. For 18 years Wayne served as the Regional Direc- tor of all of northern Europe. He oversaw 3 colleges in Belgium, Sweden and England as Regional Education Officer and served as minister at a Baptist church in Bristol. While there, Margaret founded the Christian Women’s Luncheons for England which is still in existence today. Their outreach brings together speakers, women with Christian backgrounds, and women who would like to know Christ. Returning to the states, the Detzler’s continued their diligent work. Ministries were served in Chicago, IL, India- napolis, IN, Meriden, CT, and Charlotte, NC, where Wayne was a minister in a Presbyterian church. While in Connecti- cut, Margaret started a crisis pregnancy center in Middle- town, once again putting to work her entrepreneurial spirit and amazing ability to organize volunteers. Just as it was time to leave Charlotte, the Detzler’s heard of a Christian camp in China where young children were learning how to speak English. So, at Margaret’s suggestion, off they went to serve in one of the “under- ground” or “house” churches. After 3 years in China the Detzlers returned to Connecti- cut at the invitation of their daughter. Wayne now serves as a professor at Sacred Heart University. Last February we welcomed them to Elim Park with open arms. The Next Generation A passion for ministry as deep as the Detzler’s would be next to impossible to contain. As one would expect, they endeav- or to pass their gifts to the next generation. Between the two of them they have mentored around 60 young ministers and their son is carry- ing on their tradition in England where he serves on the pastoral staff at Kensington Baptist Church in Bristol. He also founded an extension church called the BC3 which is reaching the millennial generation. Pulling People Together Perhaps the greatest gift the Detzlers have to share is their ability to pull people together. Their colorful, extensive backgrounds in a wide variety of cultures and denominations – includ- ing Baptist, Presbyterian and Catholic – have giv- en them a well of knowledge to draw from. They have an amazing ability to build relationships and strengthen the ties that bind us all. As Wayne so eloquently put it, “At the end of my life, no one may remember me but they may remember the people I influenced for the Lord. That’s the name of the game. ” Thank you, Wayne and Margaret, for making us part of your game of service to people. “At the end of my life, no one may remember me but they may re- member the people I influenced.” Many of the Detzler’s adventures have been newsworthy, as shown in the clipping above, and Wayne continues to keep people informed through his Facebook postings. 2014 Fall-Winter FanMail.indd 2-3 10/15/14 9:39 AM

Wayne and Margaret are always happy

to share memories of their travels and

mission work.

Fall is a wonderful time of year at Elim Park. All around us is the inspirational splendor of God’s work. The colorful leaves shimmer in the sun, gardeners are seen harvesting the last tomatoes and peppers, and the crisp, cool air is full of the sounds of birds taking their winter flight.

Even as the air cools, the warmth of our community, our family, continues. You can see it in people’s smiles. You can hear it in their conversations. Inspiring, colorful remembrances of days gone by mingle with exciting stories of new adventures.

Some of the more recent residents have quickly filled our newest neighbor-hood, Riverbend. They gladly share their experiences of how quickly their previous homes sold and how they love their spa-cious new home apartment. Many of them had waited several years for the real estate market to improve and were thrilled when their houses sold immediately.

If you’ve been waiting, for whatever reason, now is the time to come for a visit at this spectacular time of year. I invite you to come and take in the beauty, the smiles and the comfort of the place we all call home.

Fall 2014/Winter 2015

Wayne and Margaret Detzler’s stories can fill you with inspiration and awe. There are so many of them, and each one of them is fascinating! And they continue on to this day. We are so blessed to have them as part of the Elim Park community. Their passion for what they do is at the heart and soul of our family.

The Detzler’s connection to Elim Park started years ago when Wayne served as Chairman of our Board in the 1990s. Today, not only are they residents, Wayne also serves as an

Assistant Chaplain as part of the Mary Melby Fund —a charitable fund, named after the first Elim Park admin-istrator, which supports retired minis-ters who have worked in the Baptist General Conference, also known as Converge Worldwide. He also man-ages 2 Facebook pages—one that features daily devotionals and another, “Elim Park Live,” which looks at the lighter side of life.
