It turns out, this was in fact a burglary in

progress, and the police arrived just in time to

make an arrest. We all know how nice and

friendly Ralph is, and that he always provides

such great service. But being familiar with our

community and able to recognize something out

of place, and willing to get involved and call the

police definitely sets Ralph apart from other

letter carriers. I have written a letter to the San

Ramon postmaster on behalf of the Bollinger

Hills Board thanking Ralph. If you have a

chance, please thank Ralph for his actions.

Elsewhere in the HOA, we are replacing the

fence in the common area that runs from the

tennis court along Derby Drive in back of the

bocce ball court. The old wooden fence was

constantly being damaged. The new sturdy

metal fence should address this problem.

PRESIDENT Continued from page 1

We are also looking to replace the fence at the

back of the parking lot that runs between the

tennis court and the pool. This is not a very

sturdy fence either, and we have never been

able to utilize the gate, as it is easily broken.

Lastly, we are also planning to switch from a

key access to an electronic card system for en-

try to the pool, tennis courts, and park. This will

save us money in the long term by not needing

to re-issue keys every 5 years or so, and it will

also give us better control over key manage-

ment. Look for more info in the next Newslet-

ter!

Take care,

Victor Petersen

Crime Prevention in Bollinger Hills

By Mike Continillo, BHHOA Director

Neighborhood Watch & Crime Prevention Committee

Broker/Owner at Villa Properties

E-mail: [email protected] Ph.:925-519-0794

Over the past few weeks there have been sev-

eral reported thefts and break-ins

in our community. Property crime

is one of the biggest issues that

we deal with here in San Ramon.

We live in an upscale neighborhood that has

close proximity to 680, Crow Canyon and Norris

Canyon, which makes our neighborhood an at-

tractive target. It’s important that we all take the

proper steps to make ourselves less vulnerable

and less attractive to thieves. Remember to lock

your vehicles, and remove any visible valuables

from them. Make sure to lock your doors, even if

you are home. Keep an eye out for any suspi-

cious activity. If you see a suspicious person in

the area you can call 973-2779 (the dispatch

number). If you feel threatened or if a break in is

in progress please call 9-1-1.

One of the best things we can do as a communi-

ty to help keep crime out of our neighborhood is

to work together with our neighbors. Focus on

observation and awareness as a means of pre-

venting crime.

San Ramon Police department will partner with us

in the Neighborhood Watch program. For more in-

formation you can visit the SRPD’s website:

http://www.sanramon.ca.gov/police/watch.html.

If you would like to start a neighborhood watch pro-

gram, please contact Darlene Kittredge, Crime Pre-

vention Specialist with San Ramon Police Depart-

ment. Call (925) 973-2720 or Email

[email protected].

If you are interested in learning more, getting in-

volved, or to inform the Board of any recent burgla-

ries that you are aware of, please contact Mike

Continillo via email at: [email protected]

or phone: 925-519-0794.

If we work together as a community and look out for

each other this will be a much safer place for us to

live .

Thank you,

Mike Continillo

Drought Tips

Recently, Governor Gerry Brown has declared that California is in a

drought and has asked that consumers voluntary reduce our water usage by 20%. The state has had the lowest rainfall on record in 153 years, an astounding statistic. About 80% of our water supply is used to irrigate agricultural crops in California. Mandatory water restrictions could be coming in March or April if the rainfall doesn’t occur. Sooner or later, it’s a good idea to cut back on water usage.

Here are some ideas to help with water reduction:

Lawn

Growing a green lawn is the number one residential consumer of water.

Reduce the size of lawn or eliminate all together.

Reduce length of watering time and let it go brown.

Aerate lawn in spring/fall for better water penetration which reduces water runoff and waste.

Keep grass blades taller; 2 – 3” high will shade the soil and reduce moisture loss.

Plant drought-tolerant lawn such as “no-mow” fine fescue grass which can save an average of

75% less water. That equals about 45,000 gallons of water per year on an 800 sq.ft. lawn.

Eliminate lawn and plant California Native, and Mediterranean drought-tolerant groundcovers

and shrubs instead.

Irrigation System

Repair leaks and overspray that creates runoff and wasted water.

Hand water remaining plants sporadically rather than using irrigation system; this will allow you to

water only the thirsty plants when needed.

Drip irrigation uses less water.

Collect indoor vegetable rinse or shower water for outdoor plants and containers.

Indoors

Shorten shower time.

Wash full loads of clothes and dishes.

Collect “waste” water from the shower or kitchen and use for outdoor plants.

Keep water faucet off when brushing teeth or shaving.

Use low flow shower head.

Financial Summary as of 12/31/2013

The above is a list of investments. Cash balances are invested in treasury bills and notes, money market funds

and certificates of deposit to eliminate all capital risk. We fully fund our reserves each year to maintain cash for

capital improvements and major repairs.

HOA dues are due on the 1st day of each Jan. and July. They are delinquent on the 31st of each of those

months as stated in the COLLECTION POLICY. It is important that each homeowner pay their dues promptly

to enable our Association to continue providing service at low cost and to avoid charges for untimely payments.

Each year all 538 homeowners pay a total of $258,240 to manage the association and maintain the facilities in

Bollinger Hills. We need the funds to cover expenses of the association and to provide for repair, replacement

and capital improvements in the neighborhood. If you would like to have input regarding where these funds are

used, please contact the Board of Directors in writing at P.O. Box 449 San Ramon, CA 94583 or send an e-mail

to them through the ‘HOW TO CONTACT US’ link on the BHHOA website at www.bollingerhills.org. You can

also send your comments to me at the same address, Attention: Terry Cunningham or e-mail me at: bollinger-

[email protected].

As you may have noticed or heard, we have had a rash of home burglaries and pool and park vandalism in our

neighborhood. It costs us money to repair damaged property and enhance security measures to counter this

activity. Please consider what you can do to help report unusual activity in our neighborhood. Also make a res-

olution to join us in organizing more Neighborhood Watch programs to enable neighbors to help neighbors and

to help your association maintain the pool facilities, the courts and the park in good repair by reporting to the

police when you see trespassers. Please make sure you call the police. Do not try to confront anyone yourself.

A little observation and communication can go a long way in letting the crooks know that we are watching.
