Liebe Leserinnen und Leser, dear Readers

In our April 2014 Newsletter edition we had asked you, our readers, to get in touch with those of your

friends from the DAAD alumni community who might not be in touch with us anymore to send us their

valid email addresses. That was important to us because we would like to invite all of our alumni to this

year’s alumni meeting, to be held in Hotel Intercontinental Jakarta, 27th March – 29th March 2015. In the

meantime, quite a few alumni have sent us new email addresses so that we will be able to get in touch

with them. Thanks to all of you who have supported us in this matter!

Last week we have also placed a related ad in KOMPAS, so hopefully our database will be up-to-date to

send out invitations within the next two weeks.

Often people ask us, “What is a DAAD alumnus or a DAAD alumna, for that matter?” Here is the answer:

We consider all those people alumni who held a DAAD scholarship for at least 12 months. All those,

from all over Indonesia, will soon receive an invitation, provided they have forwarded their email

addresses to us.

We are expecting a huge crowd. 160 DAAD alumni are listed for UI alone, 150 for ITB, 140 for IPB and

100 for UGM. At UNPAD Bandung we have about 90, at UNAIR Surabaya 50, at UNHAS Makassar 40,

and 25 at ITS Surabaya. And there are many more, of course.

We put together an exciting program that should be of relevance to all our alumni: “Getting Ready! The

Importance of the Indonesian University Landscape in ASEAN” .

Have a pleasant read! See you soon in Jakarta!

Yours, Irene Jansen

2014 - Year of Living to the Fullest

2014 has been a great year for DAAD. There were plenty of memorable moments and events, those which we organized ourselves,

and those organized by the other institutions across the country.

Union and German Alumni Association (PAJ) in Jakarta, SMA Santa Ursula in BSD, Universitas Indonesia in Depok, Universitas

Padjajaran and Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Widya Mandala and Wisma Jerman in Surabaya. The

total number of visitors at these 38 events was 26.333.

Five scientific seminars were carried out by our alumni and supported by the DAAD.

The titles of these seminars are as follows:

DAAD Workshop on Climate Change Economics: The Use of Bagasse as

Source of Bio-Energy, Jogjakarta (January)

International Conference on 1st AEMT (Applied Electromagnetic Technology):

„The Lombok Geomagnetic Observatory Inauguration“, Mataram (April)

Two DIES (Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies) programs were

conducted in 2014. The DIES-NMT (National Multiplication Training) Indonesian

Academic Leaders‘ Course Part 2 took place at Universitas Surabaya in May with 25

decision makers from private universities in East Java region being present. This

Indonesian Academic Leaders‘ Course is an initiative of DAAD and DIES-Alumni in

cooperation with KOPERTIS 7, Universitas Ma Chung and Universitas Surabaya. The

DIES-Proposal Writing course for international research projects took place in

Yogyakarta, in June, with 30 researchers taking part in the course. We had 19 events

during East Java Action Plan 2013 - 2014 (see page 5).

DAAD Quarterly Science Talks at DAAD have been successfully

held during 2014 with various themes.

In March, Dr. Free Hearty, M. Hum talked about gender construc-

tion - Potret Perempuan: Dunia nyata & dunia kata dalam kon-

struksi budaya

In April right after the Indonesian parliamentary elections and the

EU elections, the second quarterly talk was staged in the German

Embassy. Dr. Andreas Radtke spoke about Parliamentarism: The

role of the people‘s representatives in democracy - Indonesia,

Germany, Europe. The newly elected scholarship holders from

the DAAD Annual Scholarship Program and the IGSP Program

were invited as special guests and received their awards.

In September, at the third quarterly science talk, the DAAD Lecturer at Universitas Islam Negeri Jakarta (UIN), Dr. Margareth

Gfrerer, spoke on Waste management; Reduce-Reuse-Refuse: The economic impact of minimizing waste.

In October, the last quarterly was held. Dr. Oliver Coleman, a fairly well-known Berlin-based science slammer and the curator

of Crustacea at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin, talked about Discovering the Unknown. On diving expeditions to the

Antarctic and Caribbean in search of new crustacean species.

Web-based seminars or “ webinars” are very useful programs in

Indonesia, being the world’s largest archipelago. They are an excellent

platform for sharing information about study and research in Germany

because participants do not have to travel but can easily follow from their

home screen or anywhere comfortable with a good internet connection.

Webinars are usually live and interactive, which allows participants to listen

to the presenter and view the online presentation on computer, without

having to be in a particular office in Jakarta. We organized 17 Webinars on a

wide range of subjects during 2014, Seven of them were in cooperation with

German universities, promoting themselves in Indonesia. We had 1.653

registrations for our webinars during 2014. Most registrations, 212, were

made for the special pre-EHEF webinar, organized one day before the

EHEF. The speakers were from six German universities and one German

institution that took part in the EHEF.

On 7 - 13 December 2014, a delegation

of eight professors and researchers from

political and social science from Indone-

sian universities and think thanks was

in Germany for a DAAD information visit

(Themenreise) under the invitation of

the DAAD. The delegation visited

several universities, research institutions

and related German ministries. The

expected outcome of the visit is to establish or to strengthen science relations

between Indonesian and German institutions.

Our newsletter and alumni magazine - NADI (Nachrichten für

Alumni über Deutschland und Indonesien) - covered many of

our events. The NADI issued in 2014 focused on Gender and

described about our successful DAAD alumnae. Our

three-monthly newsletter was published in a digital version

and NADI in a print out version. Both were sent to our alumni,

partner institutions, and people, who are in our mailing list.

Facebook and Twitter are

also very important social

media tools for sharing

information. We have at least

one post on Facebook and

Twitter everyday. Our

Facebook Fans and Twitter

followers have been

increasing every day. Our

social media fans are not just

from Indonesia, but worldwide. At the end of 2014 our Facebook fans had risen

sharply to 7.684 - two times more than last year - and Twitter followers to 3.200.

For people interested to study or

research in Germany and seek

information about it, we offered

consulting hours every Thursday

from 13:30 - 16.00. In 2014 we had

almost 700 visitors. 50% of them

were the students with their parents,

interested in bachelor studies in

Germany.

kept busy all day long by the numerous visitors. The number of the visitors increased slightly compared to the previous year. There

were more than 13.000 visitors in Jakarta, 4.500 visitors in Surabaya and 2.500 visitors in Makassar. A day before the event took

place, 7 German universities conducted a webinar hosted by the DAAD Jakarta Office. Each university had a chance to present their

program or their university for 10 minutes. After the webinar, the DAAD Jakarta invited the honorable guests to a networking party

with representatives of Indonesian universities in order to strengthen cooperation between Germany and Indonesia. The German

universities and institutions that took part in the EHEF 2014 were: University of Wismar, Frankfurt School of Finance and Manage-

Internship at DAAD Jakarta Office

Hello, my name is Laura Nießen. I have been here in the DAAD Regional Office Jakar-

ta for an internship of 4 months since September 2014. After finishing my Bachelor

studies in Maastricht (NL) last August, I took the lucky opportunity to come to Indone-

sia. In the office, I mainly worked with Ms. Olivia Sopacua in Marketing and assisted our

director, Dr. Irene Jansen, in her work. However, I also had the chance to work with all

the other colleagues and get to know their fields of expertise. During my time here, I

was able to join the European Higher Education Fair and travel to Surabaya and Ma-

kassar. I was impressed by the huge interest of Indonesian students to come to Germa-

ny and I hope that many of them will be able to come and study or research in Germa-

ny. My travels have taken me to several places in Indonesia and have shown me how beautiful Indonesia is, with many

different facets and very lovely people. I fully enjoyed my internship here with the amazing DAAD team. I have learned a

lot, in the office and outside on the streets of Jakarta. Therefore, I would like to thank everyone in the DAAD Regional

Office for being such wonderful colleagues and giving me such a great time here. Author: Laura Nießen

After six months I can look back to a grateful and instructive time in Indonesia.

In the research center of photosynthetic pigments in Ma Chung University (MRCPP), Malang,

East Java I accomplished an internship in the time from April until October 2014. With the

support of Ms. Dr. Leenawaty Limantara (MRCPP) and the German Academic Exchange

Service (DAAD) the organization and preparation for the internship was done very good and

quickly. The warm welcoming atmosphere of Ms. Dr. Leenawaty Limantara and all members

of MaChung University kept over the whole period I stayed at MRCPP. Whenever I needed

support a friendly face was ready to help me. During my internship I worked on the project

“Development and utilization of chlorophylls and carotenoids of various Indonesian

indigenous species as potential bioactive compound sources”. We analyzed leafy green

vegetable of the area of Malang for their color, pigment composition, chlorophyll content and

nitrogen content with in vivo and in vitro methods. Based on this data I published together

with my work colleges two papers which I presented on the International Conference on Plant

Physiology (ICPP) in Bali and on the International Conference of Natural Science (ICONS) in Batu. Out of the laboratory

I joined many nice activities of the university like sampling field excursions, visits of ministry members and students

graduation.

In my free time I found also time to discover Indonesia. Friendly and helpful people are not only in Ma Chung University,

they are every where in the country. The kindness and helpful behavior of Indonesians as well the versatile beautiful

area on the Indonesian’ Islands are amazing and breathe taking. After these six months I am really touched by the pe-

ople’s hospitality. In this way I want to say “Thank you” to MaChung University, MRCPP, DAAD and all people who joi-

ned in this beautiful country time with me. Author: Martin Dettling.
