FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
I wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday. Thank you once again to the staff for their hard work and dedication to the students of the school. Board Members Thank you to those parents who expressed an interest in becoming board members. The voting was very close and it is my pleasure to announce that the new Bull Creek Board members are Sara Di Candillo and Paige Goodsell. Congratulations to both parents. Playground Addition Thank you to Chris Hodson, and his band of helpers who worked tirelessly to ensure the ground works were completed in readiness for the new playground. This playground has been funded by the P&C and we appreciate this wonderful contribution to our school, which I’m sure all the children will enjoy.
Assemblies Congratulations to Banksia One, Two and Three, Mrs Hope, Mrs Gorman and Miss MacDonald for their lovely assembly acknowledging Mrs Wendy Strang’s contribution to Education in Western Australia and the Fremantle Language Development Centre in particular. We all wish Mrs Strang a well deserved holiday and a long and happy retirement. We have had a very successful collaboration and she will be missed. Congratulations to Banksia Five and Mrs Simon and Wattle One and Mrs Hutchin for their entertaining and educational assemblies.
NAIDOC Week Celebrations NAIDOC week falls during the school holidays so our students have been involved in activities to celebrate during the past two weeks. The” Moorditj Mob” from Wesley College visited the school and entertained the children with traditional aboriginal dances. The students learnt some Noongar words and about how a digeridoo and boomerang are made. Some children had the opportunity to join in with the dancers as they imitated kangaroos and emus. As part of this celebration, the students in each cluster also rotated through activities involving dance, dreamtime stories, art, Noongar language, symbols and indigenous games. This was not only educational but fun. Samples of work completed during these activities were on display at the assembly. Thank you to Miss Owen and the NAIDOC Committee for the interesting and educational activities and to the staff for engaging in this important event.
Reports Semester One Reports were sent to families via email on Thursday 4 July. The link to access the reports only remains open for four weeks from the date sent. Therefore you will need to either download or print a copy for future reference. If you have any difficulty in opening the link, please try another device before contacting the school office.
Those students with SEN Reports will receive an additional Connect message to access their report.
Swimming Lessons These commence on Wednesday 24 July through to Friday August 2. Children are encouraged to wear a robe over their bathers to and from the pool to keep warm. They will also require a towel and underwear to change back into at school.

Ms Francis, Mr Brandon Ellis, Miss Tianna Maitland and Mr Callum Ellis for their contribution
and expertise.

We have had a busy and exciting semester of science investigations. A CSIRO volunteer from Curtin University, Dr Franca Jones, who specialises in chemistry has been assisting
our Year 5 and 6 students on Monday mornings. National Science Week is on from the 10th to the 18th of August. The school theme is ‘Destination Moon: more missions, more
science’. Our students will be participating in a range of activities, during lunch time. On Friday the 16th August, students will be displaying and analysing a range of space themed
projects in the undercover area. Parents are welcome to view the students work.

Semester 1 has gone quickly. We are already in week 9.
During class we have been learning about multiplication in maths. We have been focusing
on learning our times tables. Make sure you test your kids on their time tables each night!
HASS First Fleet projects have been presented. Your child has been given back their re-
sults. Everyone did a great job.
In class we have been learning about persuasive writing. Our main focuses are personal
pronouns, emotive words, rhetorical questions and modality words.
In reading we read a famous book called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. At the mo-
ment we are working on a character description from the book.
Congratulations to all the students that participated in Cross Country. For the top 5 run-
ners in each grade, interschool practice is held on Tuesdays and Fridays each week before
school at 8 am. Anybody is welcome to come along and practice to get their fitness up.

This term in Wattle Six we have had a Camping theme in our classroom which we have really enjoyed. Every day we get to ‘camp out with a good book’ in our tent and read by torch light. We have written fantastic text innovation stories based on a book called “Mr Magee’s Camping Spree” and drew some amazing illustrations to accompany our stories. After reading the poem “In My Sleeping Bag,” we wrote our own rhyming poems and typed them out on the computer. Finally, as a part of our news telling program each fortnight, every child has presented a Tier Two vocabulary word to the class. We have built a word wall of interesting words which we have been trying to use when speaking and writing. Mrs English Wattle Six Teacher

Vegetable Gardens
Over the holiday period our wonderful teachers, education assistants and their families came to school to install three raised garden beds, kindly donated by the FLDC P&C. This
term the children in Banksia 1, 2 and 3 have used their ‘green thumbs’ to plant a variety of seeds to grow fruit, vegetables and plants. With a lot of care, our seeds are beginning to
grow! We have begun washing and tasting some of the vegetables that are growing.
Visitors
We have had lots of visitors this term as we learn about community helpers.
Professionals from Murdoch Fire Station, St John Ambulance, The WA Police Force and
the Association for the Welfare of Children in Hospital WA have come to speak with us
about;
Their job
The equipment they use
Their uniform
How to be safe in our community, and
The vehicles they travel in.
We have had lots of fun learning and playing at school!

PATHS The PATHS curriculum teaches the building blocks for students to exercise self-control and to be problem solvers. These building blocks help students to identify feelings and recognise when a problem has occurred. It also equips them with the strategies to plan for solving problems and gives students an understanding of consequences. Teachers encourage students to be problem solvers by;
Identifying, labelling and talking about problems when they arise.
Modelling problem solving behaviour.
Displaying, teaching and referring to the Control Signals Poster.
Teaching the skills for making a plan to solve problems.
Explicitly teaching students the consequences our actions have.
Support your child to be a problem solver by;
Encouraging your child to have a go at things by celebrating when they succeed but also coaching them to accept their losses.
Discuss ways of solving the problem eg. “How can you sort that out with your friend? What can you say that would help your friend understand how you feel?”
Support your child’s efforts to solve problems eg. “How did it go? Would you like me to help with ….?”
Smiling Minds The Smiling Minds curriculum, that is being implemented in all classes, covers topics such as Optimism and Strengths. Optimism is the ability to cultivate an optimistic outlook. People who practise optimistic thinking are more resilient, are less likely to give up in the face of challenge and tens to interpret experiences in a wat that gives them a sense of control and confidence. By exploring Strengths students identify and grow their own strengths and recognise and appreciate the strengths of others. Students who know and use their strengths are more resilient and display strong academic performance. At home;
Prompt your child to be hopeful about the future.
Encourage your child to set personal goals and help them to achieve them.
Encourage your child to identify their strengths, for example, helping others, or being kind.
Ask your child to identify a new strength they would like to increase. Decide what actions they could take to increase this quality. Then encourage them to practise, practise, practise.
If you think your child could benefit from some mindfulness at home give the Smiling Minds app a go. It’s free to download and quick and easy to sign up to. Values This term we have been practising the values of Care and Responsibility. Care means showing compassion for yourself and others. You might ask your friends and family how they are, you might offer to help someone in need, it can also be shown by just spending time with someone you care about. Caring for yourself means making healthy choices, recognising how you’re feeling and spending time doing things that you enjoy. Responsibility means being accountable for your actions and participating positively in society. You can show responsibility by doing what is right at the right time for yourself, others and the environment. The Aussie of the Month recipients for Care were; Jack and Jessie. The Aussie of the Month recipients for Responsibility were; Lilliana and Jude. Congratulations to these outstanding students.
