tropical attire at the President’s Funday. A variety of bowling, and clothing was the order of the day. The green was most festive with the m u l t i - c o l o u r s o f p l a y e r s , notwithstanding the oppressive weather conditions. We were treated to a visitation by Carmen Miranda, outfitted by Gwen and paraded by John. Geraldine Lockyer took home the lucky members’ award. Helen Haran won the glamour award, and John Geismar the most outrageous award. The skies opened at 4pm, whilst the only players still on the green at that time were on lucky rink number 13!
We farewelled the Mosman Council Senior Citizens during the month, as their renovations are now completed.
We are now looking towards the New Year with great enthusiasm. The men will field three teams in Pennants, and the Ladies two. We will be hosting numerous Pennants matches, and to facilitate green usage and smooth transitions from morning to afternoon matches, we will commence social matches on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 1pm. Mosman Chamber of Commerce hosted their members at our venue on Friday 30th November, and have requested a repeat event next year.
December has proven to be the social month on our calendar. Commencing with our Christmas party, attended by more than 100 members and guests, and at which presentations were made to the var ious Ch ampio nship and competition winners. We enjoyed an excellent meal, and good company.
It has been good to see some members returned from overseas, and some from illness.
Two new bubblers have been installed at the southern end of the greens….please make use of them.
The winners of our 2018 Business Bowls Challenge, O’Gorman Partners Real Estate, have now directed payment of their $1,000.00 prize money to The Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation as their donor of choice.

Peter McAdam was one of our bowling
club's greatest volunteers - in his too-short
time with us he managed to be involved in
almost every aspect of the MBC - he was a
wonderful contributor! Peter's outstanding
volunteering efforts were recognised in
2015 when he was nominated for the Bowls
NSW Volunteer of the Year award.
Earlier this year Jenanne McAdam asked if
she might be able to sponsor an annual
award recognising and thanking our
volunteers, while keeping Peter's legacy of
volunteering strong. The inaugural Peter
McAdam Volunteer of the Year recipient
was an easy decision for the Board - John
Candy has not only spent countless hours
keeping our gardens looking so beautiful
over many years, but he also regularly mans the Bowls Office and is always one of
the first to respond to calls for volunteers to assist Club functions and events.
Congratulations, and a very sincere "thank you" John - and many thanks to
Jenanne for her thoughtfulness and generosity in sponsoring this important and
now-annual award.
playing in this competition in 2019 – only 8 women played in 2018.
We are entering two teams in pennants this year, Grades 1 and 2. This decision was not made lightly but due to the fact that several of our members are not match fit it was decided this was the best option. Hopefully in 2020 we will field three teams again.
There was a big rush for the uniforms and I have sold nearly half already. There are plenty of long sleeved shirts for the winter season. I hope you are happy with this new supplier – it is always difficult to please everyone but I think these shirts are quite good value. Short sleeved $45 and long sleeved $48.
The Presidents' Day was a huge success as usual. We were so lucky with the weather – only one team had to play in the rain – the rest of the rinks had finished. Judy Mitchell won the spider, Helen Haran was best dressed lady and John Geismar was best dressed man – that is best dressed in the spirit of our Hawaiian theme.
Best Wishes
e are off to another exciting year of bowling. Our greens are being renewed and will be ready end February for the start of pennants in March.
I would like to thank Glenda who filled in for me at the Christmas Party giving out the prizes for 2018. The summer fours trophy went to the team of Judy Moyes, Robyn Novakovic, Robin Bower and Rosemary Dale – congratulations. Thanks again to Loyce for organising this fun event.
Congratulations to Julie Hayden winner of the consistency in 2018. This match was played between and Jeyam Sivaloganathan and Julie. I marked this match and it was good to see such a high standard of bowling. It would be good to see more members

Members will be aware of the 1pm start time from 1 January to the end of Women's Saturday morning Pennants season. All members affected by a delayed Pennants match are requested to extend courtesy to the Pennants players, and to wait with their bowls equipment on the verandah, until their skips approve approaching the rink.
Your Club Board wishes every member a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Our mid year financial report discloses that we are maintaining a budgeted surplus for the year. Funds are set aside for the refurbishment of the Ladies Bathroom pending advice as to our grant applications.
Some improvements have been made to the office door, shelving in the cool room, new bubblers, and the School Green benches have been re-oiled. Thanks to Scott, Snowy and our volunteers regarding these works.
The 2019 Programme and Diary is now available, together with the updated List of Members. Members should carefully check their P r o g r a m m e f o r P e n n a n t s , Championships, and Tournaments.
New women's shirts are now available in the Clubhouse, and a further supply of men's shirts has been ordered.
We are pleased to welcome William Barter and Peter Rose as new members.
Robyn Novakovic is looking for volunteers to her Membership Committee which is proposing a number of membership drives this year.
The Board proposes a website workshop for members in the New Year.
Members should consult with Gay Suters regarding updating of their green emergency forms.

Congratulations to Julie Hayden winner
of the consistency in 2018.
The final was played between Julie and
Jeyam on Friday 30th November and I
marked this match and enjoyed watching
the excellent bowling.
There has been some discussion on the
length of the match - first to 150 - but
this is the standard format. It is a great
opportunity to improve your draw
bowling.
I hope we will have more entries in 2019.
Enjoy your holiday break.

1. Don’t Drop Big Numbers.
Very often we see players trying to
get the shot with every bowl they
deliver. Often this is by playing
weight inappropriately. The art of
building a head gets lost in the
heat of battle. It is essential to
minimise dangerous situations and
to set up opportunities to convert
shots down to shots up once your
team has bowls in the head.
Pennant games can be won or lost
in one or two ends. You don’t want
to look back on a game and realise
that you would have won it by
drawing for second shot on a
particular end rather than trying to
win that end with a high-risk bowl.
It is also important to be awake to
the risks of a big score against you
should the jack move to a
grouping of your opponent’s bowls.
Make sure you protect against this
situation by playing a defensive
bowl.
2. Make Yourself Clear.
It is essential that skips (or thirds
as directors in the head, if asked
by their skip) are absolutely clear
in explaining their requirement
from the player on the mat and
that they communicate it prior to
the bowler starting their set-up. It
is not sufficient just to wave an
arm to the left or to the right.
Players often need to know more
than the better hand to play. For
instance are they trying to turn a
bowl in, out or through and by how
much? Where is the jack relative
to a bowl? How much weight is
required? What are the risks?
Once the situation is explained, the
bowler can lock it into his head
and visualise the shot with more
confidence.
3. Practise Weight Control.
Controlling weight is the most
difficult skill for coaches to teach.
In the long run only practice and
experience can teach it. There are
schools of thought that weight
adjustment is achieved by varying
your delivery step or by increasing
the length of your pendulum
swing. However any major
adjustment to these parameters
can cause over correction and
failure. Weight control comes down
to body forward momentum and
this is something your computer,
the brain, can control once you
have put in the practice. Most
professional coaches suggest that
you should not change anything in
your action but make adjustments
to the speed of your delivery only
by controlling forward momentum.
Your subconscious takes charge
but it can’t do that without the
Random tips to help prepare for Pennants. With Pennants about to start for both men and women the following
thoughts are worth repeating
experience gained from practice
and playing the game.
4. Learn From Your Roll-up
Bowls.
Four of the most important bowls
you deliver in a Pennants match
are your roll-up bowls. These will
tell you the speed of the green
and the draw line you need on
each hand. Many bowlers do not
concentrate on their roll-up
bowls and then waste their early
bowls as they continue to correct
to find the right line and weight.
5. Ensure that the Relationship
between Skip & Third is sound.
Good communication between a
skip and his third is essential.
Decide how you should work
together before the game starts.
Some skips prefer minimal help
from their third, and others like
to have regular advice. Skips
should not need help from their
third if the head is unchanged
because they should have locked
in the situation before leaving
the head. However thirds must
be awake to any change in the
head that may need to be
communicated to their skip.
