I believe very much that teachers, and adults, have the capacity to help young people grow and we do that by fostering their character and via the messages we give them each day about things like success and failure, hope and persistence and how to bounce back after a setback. The classroom is such an important part of a school day and it should be a safe space for every student. We have also started this term with some new faces to GHS, and this is a result of some of our staff who were on temporary contracts, receiving permanent appointments and promotion opportunities. I would like to welcome Ms Sally Bray who will be in the Science faculty, Mr Hans Enter who is with us in the English faculty, permanently appointed TAS teacher Ms Dannielle McDonald, and acknowledge that Mrs Sheryn West will be relieving as HT Science for Term 2 while Mrs Frost is on leave. I would like to wish all of our school community every success during Term 2. There is a great deal to look forward to, both within and beyond the classroom. We continue to do great things as a school, as seen of our recognition on the Departments Distinguished Achievers List. I believe strongly in our students, our staff and community – our success is your success, and it again goes to show the strength of the Gilgandra community. Welcome to Term 2, a term which started with 126 teaching and non-teaching staff from Gilgandra, Gulargambone, Mendooran, Tooraweenah and Warren investing their time in learning from Dan Haesler about mindset. Dates for your diary...

Volunteers are required to help in the canteen.

If you can spare some time Please ring the school 6847 2276

Canteen Over the next 2 terms there will be changes happening to the canteen menu, as we need to become a healthy canteen by the end of 2019. We have already introduced freshly made meals. On offer we have Butter Chicken. Pasta Bolognese, Macaroni & Cheese. Fried Rice with Honey Mustard Chicken available shortly. These meals have been very popular so to avoid disappointment please order by recess using the canteen supplied bags. Next week we will also be introducing Hot Chocolate, and toasted sandwiches. These will be available before school. I am also looking for more volunteers to help in the canteen, it doesn’t need to be a full day or every week. To make this Winter Healthy Home-style Menu successful, all

help would be appreciated.

New Jackets for Winter

Gilgandra High School P&C are purchasing new school jackets for winter this year. The cost will be $60 and jackets will be ordered when payments are received at the front office of the school. If you would like an order form please see Mrs Schier.

Medication

Under the DoE guidelines the school is not permitted to supply non-prescribed medication (i.e. Panadol) to students. When a medical practitioner has prescribed medication that must be administered during the school day, parents are responsible for bringing this need to the attention of the school.

If your child needs to take prescribed medication at school,

please contact the school office regarding the paperwork

required for the administration to be carried out safely.

Students must not carry medications unless there is a written agreement between the school and the student's parents that this is a required part of the student's health care support, eg epipen, asthma.

Industry Breakfast

Gilgandra High School is hosting a breakfast for industry

representatives on May 15th from 7:30am. Troy Kelly is the

School Based Apprentice and Trainee Officer for Senior

Pathways, a division of the Department of Education. Troy

will make a presentation to interested industry

representatives on how School Based Apprenticeships and

Traineeships (SBATs) work. There are significant

government incentives for businesses to take on trainees

and apprentices. Troy will be available for questions after the

presentation. The breakfast will be catered for by the

school’s hospitality unit.

Come along and find out if an SBAT will enhance your business. Contact Heather Frewin, Careers Advisor, Gilgandra High School on 6847 2276 for further information and to secure a place.

Parent Teacher Evening

Troy Kelly is the School Based Apprentice and Trainee Officer for Senior Pathways, a division of the Department of Education. Troy will be at Gilgandra High School on May 14th from 6:30pm to make a presentation to interested parents and students from Years 9 -11 on how School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) work. The school currently has four SBATs in place ranging from physiotherapy to banking services to aged care to the electrical trades. SBATs enable students to complete a traineeship or to complete the first year of an apprenticeship in their final two years of school while they gain their HSC. Troy will be available for questions after the presentation. Contact Heather Frewin, Careers Advisor, Gilgandra High School on 6847 2276 for further information and to secure a place.

News from the English faculty

Congratulations to those students who had English classwork and assessments included in the Gilgandra High School show display. It was great to see so much Shakespeare on show.

Term 2 has kicked off, for the junior English classes, with a focus on poetry. The junior Geography classes are entering their second units of work. Stage 5 Drama and Commerce are also commencing their second units for the year.

Years 11 and 12 are immersed in significant assessment tasks. For Year 11, most are finalising their first submissions, whilst Year 12 are commencing the last tasks they will tackle before their trial examinations in Term 3. For both year groups, this term is vital, for both task results and knowledge consolidation. All students are urged to knuckle down and do their best.

Finally, we warmly welcome Mr Hans Enter to our department. He comes to us with a world of experience. I have already been told that the new teacher is 'awesome'.
