Principal’s Message: Kia ora anō tātou, We have reached the end of another disrupted term and are excited about now being back at Alert Level 1 and hoping that the days of lockdowns are behind us for the foreseeable future. I want to send out a big thank you to the staff who have taken all of the disruption in their stride and have continued to deliver for our students. Our team stepped up and covered extra classes when necessary and adapted quickly to the necessary changes. Like everyone, our teachers and other staff appreciate positive feedback so I would encourage you to send them an email, seesaw message or pop into their classroom and tell them stories about what you appreciate about the work they are doing. It will make a difference to their wellbeing over the holidays.
While on the topic of wellbeing and with this week being Mental Health Awareness week I would like to update you on our AWEsome Schools wellbeing survey that we conducted over Term 2 and 3, in between Covid lockdowns, with our students and staff. I would like to update you on the results of that survey. For reference, the participating schools using this survey in New Zealand and Australia are mostly private schools such as Kings School and College, Kristin School among others or high decile schools such as Otago Boys’ High. These are the schools our results
Newsletter 24 25th September 2020
compare with. Overall, we found that our junior students had higher than average wellbeing and our senior students had slightly below average. Some of the Junior students strengths, were in happiness and health, peer relationships, belonging and competence and areas to work on were resilience and slightly higher than average scores on sadness, anxiety and bullying. For the seniors the students happiness was at the average and their satisfaction with school support for their wellbeing was average but resilience and health (citing lack of sleep) as a concern area. Their overall satisfaction with school was also lower than average. We are currently formulating an action plan to dig deeper into some of the areas of concern and to put in place extra supports. The next round of the survey will take place next term. Our Ag Day is fast approaching and we are excited to be able to fully run our normal programme and welcome back calves to our school with proper precautions in place. Last year we fundraised for shade in the school and the new shade sails will be installed in the school over the coming holidays. This year the focus will be on covering our senior courts in astro-turf. As it will also be Election Day, you will be able to vote in the Hall and spend some money supporting the school at the same time! This is our biggest annual event and we would love to see you all at school on the day. During the holidays, all of our team leaders and SLT will be coming into school for two days to undergo some leadership training. This is to strengthen the capability of our staff to lead their teams and to ensure that we are seeking continual improvement in students’ learning, achievement and wellbeing.
We hope that your children have a chance to relax and recharge their batteries over the break and come back prepared for a big term to end the year. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou. Simon Craggs Tumuaki/Principal

be filled, I hereby declare the following duly elected:

Arts and Culture Evening The decision has been made to change the dates of our School’s Arts and Culture Evening which was planned for the last week of this Term. The new dates for this event will now be –
Tuesday, November 10th and Wednesday, November 11th
Because of the uncertainty surrounding Covid-19 Alert Levels, we want to be sure that we can stage this event in the School Hall. The event will involve a combined cast and audience exceeding 200 people. Under the current Level 2 restrictions, we cannot legally stage an event involving that number of people. It is with great hope that we will have returned to Level One restrictions by these new dates.
The Arts and Culture Evening is an exciting event that brings together all of the different Performing Arts groups and individuals within our school in an exciting show full of Music, Drama, Dance and Kapa Haka.

Junior School - Kids Art Works Fundraiser:
This year the Junior School are creating masterpieces at school to raise funds so we can update our PE shed. You can order calendars, cards, diaries, mouse mats or sketchpads, all featuring your child's amazing art (just in time for Christmas). A note will come home with your student outlining how to order. Orders will close 19 October 2020. All the products are available to see in the school office. Thanks for your support.
Ag Day 2020 (and Election Day) – Saturday 17 October: We received over 90 animal entries for Onewhero Ag Day 2020 … that’s almost a third of all the students in Years 1-8!
Ag Day 2020 and COVID-19 Whether we are at Alert Level 1 or Alert Level 2*, Ag Day will take place on Saturday 17 October. However, we have had to come up with two plans to accommodate potential COVID-19 restrictions.
Alert Level 1 (our current level) Ag Day will go ahead as normal, but with less food stalls (sausage sizzle and hot beverages only). Indoor exhibits will be on display and we can still have prize giving. Our new school library will also be open and Scholastic books will be on sale for private purchase and/or to be donated to our new library.
Alert Level 2 Alert Level 2 will have restrictions on gathering sizes. Ag Day will be closed to the public, including extended family and friends. The day will be split into two sessions, with different animals on show at each session** (lambs and chickens in the morning, and dogs, goats and calves early afternoon). Indoor exhibits will be displayed at a later date, and prize giving will be held at a Year 1-8 assembly at school. There will be no food or refreshments for sale, so pack your thermos and some snacks.
* If the gathering limit is not less than 100 people. ** There will be some families with more than one type of animal on show. If Ag Day takes place during Alert Level 2, we will be in touch to talk about how the schedule affects your family.
Year 1-8 Design Competition We need a cover design for this year’s Ag Day programme! Year 1-8 students can enter (one entry per student). The design should be on A4 paper, portrait-oriented and must include ‘Onewhero Ag Day 2020’. Make sure you write your name, year and room number on the back of the design, then hand your design into the school office by 3.00pm on Tuesday 13 October. (Late entries will not be accepted.) Chocolate is the prize!
Ag Day Grocery Raffles ... $2 per ticket or three for $5! We welcome donations of any non-perishable food items from all families of OAS students. Please drop your donation into Room 5 or Room 7, thank you! Each family will get 10 raffle tickets to sell over the school holidays. Please return the raffle tickets and money to school by Wednesday 14 October. The grocery raffles will be drawn before prize giving on Ag Day (Saturday 17 October). All funds raised will go towards the installation of turf on the senior courts outside the hall. Thank you for your support!
Animal Event Information Animal events at this year’s Ag Day will include: Lambs … Calling (Most Obvious Pet), Leading, Rearing, Fancy Dress (optional) Goats … Calling (Most Obvious Pet), Leading, Rearing, Fancy Dress (optional) Calves … Leading, Rearing & Grooming, Dairy Type or Beef Type and Fancy Dress (optional) Chickens … Pullet, Pair of Pullets, Chicken Diary, Chicken Trick (optional) Dogs … Most Obvious Pet (leading and a trick), Fancy Dress (optional)
You will find a downloadable summary of events, including courses and tips and tricks, in the newsletter attachments, under Onewhero Ag Day Animal Event Information.
Yellow Ag Day Tags If your child happens to have a yellow Ag Day tag from a previous Ag Day, please get them to return it to the school office so we can use it for Ag Day this year. The yellow tags are not souvenirs! Thank you.
Group Day The Franklin South Group Day will be held on Thursday 29 October and hosted by Kaiaua School. A decision will be made early-mid October regarding the event going ahead. This will depend on the COVID-19 Alert Level closer to the time.
Ag Day Volunteers … We need your help! An Ag Day jobs spreadsheet is now available online at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1chTKQ1YcCI15RhF-Cy0bTfs2q_W-K7ZDtYcG4BThFFA/edit?usp=sharing Each job includes a brief description, an estimate of the time commitment involved and when the job needs to be done. Simply add your name and contact details next to the job(s) you're interested in and we'll be in touch closer to Ag Day. If you are not comfortable sharing your contact details in a public document, then add your name to the spreadsheet and email your contact details to [email protected]. Thank you!
