Greetings, Happy November to everyone—it is the start of the holiday season and cooler weather for us here in the southwest. Many events have come to pass in these past 10 months at the temple. Many more are being organized for execution. The first one I would like to bring your attention to is the Non-violence walkathon to commemorate the 150th birth an-niversary of Mahatma Ghandi. I invite each and everyone of you to participate and show our strength in numbers at this event. It will be held at the Albuquerque Academy school. Even if you are not an avid walker—you can come and participate by volunteering at our booths or handing out water bottles. Our presence in the state is very subtle, these types of events will boost our children’s self confidence. I urge everyone to show support in order to showcase and advocate our presence in the state of New Mex-ico. Another task that the board is undertaking this year is to promote a membership drive. This will enable the temple to receive necessary funds to make plans for our new tem-ple. Showing an influx of income on a regular basis helps us to secure loans and funds that will be required to establish a new location for our deities. It is my pleasure to welcome the following new officers to our organization—Pritha Ghosh (Co-director of cultural activities and temple activities), Ashok Ghosh (Director of Income Assurance and verification/Audit), Prakruthi Santosh (Director of Charita-ble activities) and, Nikita Jaiswal (Website contents). With the added influx of new blood it is my believe that we will serve our community with new vigor.

If you know of families that are not receiving the newsletter, kindly send me a message ([email protected]) so we may include them in the mailing list.

Wishing you all a very safe and happy Thanksgiving break.

President’s message

Krishna Jaiswal President

Durga Puja

Karvachauth

Durgastami was celebrated grandly at the temple on Oct 6th, the celebrations also include oth-er major deities of Hinduism such as Lakshmi , Saraswati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya. In Bengali tradi-tions, these deities are considered to be Durga's children and Durga puja is believed to commemorate Durga's visit to her natal home with her children.

Hindus believe that if married women fast on this day, it helps in prolong-

ing the life of their husbands and also brings happiness in the family.

Nowadays many unmarried girls also keep this fast to pray and wish for a

good husband.

Event was successfully organized by our very own Rajani Dhawan on Oc-

tober 17th. Beautifully clad women and girls performed the pooja.

Diwali at the temple

Balvihar parents and children sang Ashta Lakshmi stotram, listened to the story of Brahmasura. He was an asura who was granted the power to burn up and immediately turn into ashes (bhasma) anyone

whose head he touched with his hand. The asura was tricked by

the god Vishnu's only female av-atar, the enchantress Mohini, to turn himself into ashes. We also

lighted sparklers and enjoyed the day with good food and

good company.

Lakshmi Puja (upcoming event)

HTSNM will be celebrating Lakshmi Puja

on 24th of November—please contact or-

ganizer and coordinator
