February… the last quiet month be- fore spring starts to take control. ere’s still time, to read, ski, work on crafts, plan the garden. Or think about who you’re going to invite to the Banquet on March 2nd! Still time to donate to the silent auction as well, if you have goods or servic- es you’d like to feature. It’s a good cause, feathering the Ikes’ nest for another season! And the program this year is top-notch, with GVSU’s Robert Hollister sharing stories about studying the climate of Alas- ka. is is a chance to hear the facts from a fellow Michigander, who is passionate about his field work in the arctic. He started the Arctic Ecology Program in 2007, and was recently awarded a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to continue the work for 5 more years. I think it will be a fascinating program. And of course the rest of the eve- ning is loads of fun: a good buffet dinner, lovely and useful items to bid generously on, and fun people who look so different in their dress- up clothes. Reserve your place now, if you haven’t yet, so we’ll have ta- bles and food for all! Remember Nicole Mathiasz? She taught a really good Mush- room Class here last fall. I saw her re- cently and she agreed to do another in the spring, with some seasonal changes. I was pretty happy that I actually learned two new fungi well enough to rec- ognize and use them. Winterfest was wonderful again!

We had sunshine and no wind, so the cold temps just made for squeakier snow as at least 140

people ran around spreading smiles. Winterfest is a day out of the ordinary, with stresses set aside in favor of fun and friend-ship. I enjoyed seeing familiar fac-

es and some new ones, and thank ALL who came, to help or play, making it a great day!

To keep our perspective balanced and fresh, I thought I’d interview one of the kids from the Strong Roots group. Sebastien and his sister Rosabel are outdoor enthu-siasts and quick learners. They’ve been coming to the Ikes’ for about a fourth of their lives and are re-ally getting to know the place. Their mother, Jennifer, teaches kids’ yoga sessions.

Me: Hey. Sebastien, how old are you now?

SB: I am 10 years old.

Me: When did you first come to the Izaak Walton League?

SB: Probably 2 or 3 years ago, ever since Strong Roots started.

Me: What are your favorite things to do here?

SB: I really, really like to kayak or canoe on the lake. I like climb-ing trees, building forts, doing fire starting, and camping out.

Me: Do you have a favorite area?

SB: I like the Pine Grove a lot, and the lake … and the entire stream area. I also like Ham-mock Hill.

Me: What are some of the things you like to do outdoors, in general?

SB: Climbing trees, building forts, and hiking. And biking. I went on one really long bike ride over by Ann Arbor with my family.

Me: If you could be any animal for one day, what would it be?

SB: Oh, I’d go with Otter. Be-cause they have fun and are play-ful. And they can do a lot of stuff.

Me: What are your hobbies or interests?

SB: I like building things. I love reading. I like to work with elec-tronics. And leather working.

Me: Do you have ideas for things you’d like to do when you’re older?

SB: To be a naturalist. To work on ways to conserve energy, and work on a power plant that is en-vironmentally friendly, and good for the atmosphere.

Me: Do you know what the IWLA is?

SB: I guess… it’s a conservation organization. I’’s environmentally friendly, protecting woods, wa-ters, and wildlife, like it says on the map.

Me: What concerns do you have about the earth?

SB: Um … my main concern is the atmosphere, and global warm-ing. Poaching, there’s way too much of that and it needs to get under control. We should help endangered species.

Me: If you had to provide food for your family, how would you do it?

SB: Probably I’d grow the major-ity of it. Maybe hunt deer because there are so many of them. Gather nuts and stuff from the woods.

Me: Would you rather have … an airplane, or two horses?

SB: Oh … let me think. An air-plane would be fun, but probably not as environmental. And I could only go long distances with that. If I had a wagon and two horses, I couldn’t go too far because the horses would need water. I might go with the horses and a wagon. Because I’d get to ride the horses too, which we used to do. Plus, it would be fun to build the wagon.

Me: As a student, what do you like to study?

SB: Engineering. The environment. I have to admit I’m not a big fan of math. I love reading and writing.

Me: Do you like to camp out?

SB: I LOVE to camp out!

Me: Where have you gone?

SB: Only at the Izaak Walton League. It was in July or August. We were going to go a few years earlier, but our tent got in a flood in the basement and got wrecked.

Me: Are you coming to Winter-fest?

SB: I really hope so!! We’re go-ing to have to find a ride though. (Rosabel said Hi, too!)

Me: Well, let me know if you need one; I hope to see you both there!

Our Awards Banquet is fast approaching, at least from the perspective of the banquet and awards commit-tees. Everything seems to be coming together to have a really fun and enjoy-able event.

The awards com-mittee has nomi-nated recipients,

and the program committee has secured a speaker to give an informative and interesting presentation about an area most of us have never seen.

The annual awards banquet is scheduled for Saturday evening March 2, 2019 at Thousand Oaks Country Club, 4100 Thousand Oaks Dr NE, Grand Rapids, MI. This is the same location as the last five years. It has served us very well and we’ve received many compliments from meeting attendees.

We still need help obtaining donations for the raf-fle and silent auction. Contact Banquet committee folks if you have questions or would like to make or obtain donations for the event. Committee mem-bers are: Fred Eyer, Bob Stegmeir, Maurie House-man, Lisa Gordon Rick Wylie, or Ron Waybrant.Note: To help prevent mixups, please note that the annual banquet has been scheduled for a Saturday evening again instead of what was the traditional Friday evening.

Last year’s Ike of the Year, Barry Gilbertson.

IKES IN ACTION

YOUR ENDOWMENT IN ACTIONA look at the issues and history of Izaak Walton League of America Endowment grants to League chapters and divisions.

THE GRIMSHAW LEGACY

In any organization, there are individuals who deserve recognition for their contributions to the principles and objectives of that organization. For the Izaak Walton League of America Endowment, Michael and Gerry Grimshaw were two such people.

The sons of a traveling preacher, the brothers grew up in Indiana. They were life members of the Izaak Walton League and the League’s Indiana Division, and they belonged to the Fort Wayne (Indiana) and Dwight Lydell (Michigan) Chapters. Ardent conservationists, they were also affiliated with many other conservation groups, including the Indiana Wildlife Federation, for which Mike served as president.

Mike and Gerry spent many days at the state legislature in Indianapolis lobbying for natural resource conser-vation. Like many Ikes, they used personal vacation time to work on League causes. They were instrumen-tal in making hunter safety education mandatory in Indiana, and they taught hunter education classes at the Fort

Wayne Chapter for 20 years. Mike and Gerry were also involved in collecting and donating regional bird and animal species for a local natural history museum.

Like many brothers, they could disagree and fight “like cats and dogs,” providing a never-ending source of amusement for their friends. While Mike was a devotee of classical music, Gerry was major fan of the Indy 500 and had memorabilia going back to the 1940s. Their travels took them from South America to Canada.

In the late 1990s, the brothers moved to Lake County, Michigan, where they had a hunting cabin in the heart of the Pere Marquette State Forest. They upgraded the cabin to make it a comfortable place to live and

spent their time working on wildlife plantings and habitat structures around the property and enhancing the trout stream that flowed through it. Gerry died in 2004; Mike in 2007.

The Grimshaw brothers left a size-able estate to the IWLA Endowment to support conservation projects within the League. The Endowment Board decided to use only revenue generated by interest and dividends from the estate for grant-making purposes (not touching the principal).

While some conservation projects have been awarded grants in the name of the Grimshaws, the Endowment Board intends to identify one project every year to receive the Grimshaw Legacy Award. It’s a fitting tribute for two men who gave so much to conservation, the League, and the IWLA Endowment.

We are extremely grateful to John Trimberger of Michigan, who was a close friend of Mike and Gerry Grimshaw and executor of their estate, who provided much of the background information on the brothers presented here.

— Miles Greenbaum, IWLA Endowment Board President

Winterfest 2019 turned put to be a spectacular day full of energetic kids catching fish and making candles; watching a fire-starting demonstra-tion and making birdfeeders; shoot-ing arrows at targets and ice skating.

But most of the staff worried at the beginning of the day that we would see poor attendance because of the very cold temperature, which was a few degrees below zero. But then the wind dropped and the sun came out and so did the attendees.

Nearly 150 folks enjoyed the day and the Kitchen Krew worked steadily feeding everyone chili and hot dogs, chips and cookies,, hot cocoa and coffee. We actually ran out of food, something that has not happened in years. At the end of the day all that remained were a few lonely cookies.

While the rest of the staff handled the outside events, Tam Bag-by, Len Kizer, Gary and Lynn

Wheeler and I took are of lunch and inside clean up. I finally got a stint at washing all the dishes and the rest of the Krew cleaned the dining room. We all were pooped at the end of the day but it was worth the effort just to see the smiles on the faces of the kids as they enjoyed the activities.

Thanks to all who made it a great day.
