PTSA Announcements
Spirit Days Feb 3rd and Feb 17th are the Spirit Days this month! Make sure your student wears a school shirt or school colors to show school spirit! We have some fun prizes to raffle off! Please remind your students that in order to be eligible for prizes they need to be wearing a significant amount of the school colors (red and/or yellow). We can't wait to see what they wear!
Spelling Bee
Picture (l to r) Sophia Christensen, Alyssa Grover, Maria
Osipenko
The Lakeridge PTSA Spelling Bee was held Tuesday, January 24. There were ten contestants. After nearly an hour of spelling, our winners were: 1st place - Maria Osipenko, 2nd place - Alyssa Grover, 3rd place - Sophia Christensen. Maria and Alyssa will both be going to the Salt Lake County Spelling Bee on March 25. Congratulations to all the spellers!
PTSA Email List If you would like to receive e-mails notifying you of what the PTSA is doing, please send your email address to [email protected]. If you paid your PTSA dues online, you may not be getting any information from the PTSA. There isn't a way for you to give your email or phone number to the PTSA when you pay online, so you still need to contact Loree Miles or Jill Freestone to get your name added to our list. If you haven't been getting emails from [email protected] this school year, then you aren't on the most current list. Emails that have been coming out have been about sign up genius volunteer opportunities, upcoming meetings and past meeting minutes.
Box Tops
Time for our spring Box Tops drive! Collecting and turning in Box Tops is an easy way to help our school raise money! Our spring Box Tops drive will begin mid-February; please look for more information soon. Box Tops will be collected in A1 classes, and the front office also accepts Box Tops anytime.
Reflections We would like to congratulate Josue Marin and Hannah Keen! They both moved forward to state in the PTA Reflections Contest! Josue Marin moved on for music and Hannah Keen moved on in visual arts/2D art. And Congratulations to Tanner Meeks! He received a certificate of merit for 3-D art.
Lakeridge T-Shirts and Hoodies T-shirts and Hoodies are still available to purchase. Go to the Financial Office and pay cash or check. Checks should be made out to Lakeridge PTSA. T-shirts are $10 and Hoodies are $25. Don't forget! This school gear is perfect for School Spirit Day!
PTA Day at the Capitol - Feb 22
PTA Day at the Capitol is an opportunity for parents
and students to learn more about the government.
Last year, Students grades 7-12 enjoyed tours of
the capitol, a mock floor debate to learn the
3
process of how a bill becomes law, lunch, Pat
Jones spoke about how our students can get
involved and Lt. Gov. Cox dropped in to talk with
them. This year it will be Feb 22 from 8:30- 2:00
and is open on a first come first serve basis.
Depending on demand, the fee may be covered by
PTSA or students/parents will be charged up to
$15. There is a PTA/gov't meeting for parents
where our commissioners will present on the bills
that Utah PTA is following during the 2016 Utah
Legislative Session. There are separate meetings
for students. Those interested should contact
Becky Caldwell. [email protected]

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC BEE
Moves One Step Closer to $50,000 College
Scholarship
Orem, UT, December 14, 2016—Zac Colter,
an 8th grade student at your school, won the
school competition of the National Geographic
Bee on December 14, 2016 and a chance at a
$50,000 college scholarship. The school Bee,
at which students answered questions on
geography, was the first round in the 29th
annual National Geographic Bee.
Thousands of schools around the United
States and in the five U.S. territories are
participating in the 2017 National Geographic
Bee. The school champions will take a
qualifying test; up to 100 of the top scorers on
that test in each state will then be eligible to
compete in their state Bee on March 31, 2017.
The National Geographic Society will provide
an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C.,
5
for state winners to participate in the Bee national
championship rounds May 15-17, 2017. The first
place national champion will receive a $50,000
college scholarship, a lifetime membership in
the Society including a subscription to National
Geographic magazine, and a trip to the Galápagos
Islands, courtesy of Lindblad Expeditions and
National Geographic.
The national finals will air on television on May 19
at 8 p.m. EST on the National Geographic Channel
and Nat Geo WILD, and later on public television
stations. Check local listings for dates and times.
Everyone can test their geography knowledge by
downloading the “National Geographic GeoBee
Challenge” app, with more than 1,000 questions
culled from past Bees, available on the App Store
for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad; from the Android
Market; or for NOOK Color.
National Geographic Society is a global nonprofit
membership organization driven by a passionate
belief in the power of science, exploration and
storytelling to change the world. We fund hundreds
of research and conservation projects around the
globe each year. With the support of our members
and donors, we work to inspire, illuminate and
teach through scientific expeditions, award-winning
journalism, education initiatives and more. For
more information, visit
www.nationalgeographic.org.
