FROM Mr Paul Jeffreys, Principal... I am standing around in front of the Prep and Year 1 classrooms nearly every morning. Children enter the school grounds in a continuous slow drip and I watch them come down the path towards our buildings. As they come close to me, almost every little person says good morning; not as a response to my greeting, but as an initiative from each of them. It doesn’t seem like much of a big deal to some, but to me it is marvellous. What a wonderful thing it is that a 5 year old child feels compelled to say good morning. Sometimes children start conversations. Thanks Edward Williamson for asking about my weekend. Thank you Miranda McIntyre for asking how my day has been so far. Thanks too Jessica Field for the ‘hello’s’ and the messages from dad. I also say thanks to Lily and Monet Graham, Zarli and Cooper Hassett and the Mirtschins, Olivia and Caleb. Lucille Aarons and Xanthe Huf and Flynn Darroch make me feel like a million dollars every day because they say hello…and you feel like they really mean it. Addison Linskens and the Haley children and Thomas Gordon and the Potters, every day… “Hello, Mr Jeffreys”. And the more I wonder about it, it seems like they are all doing this greeting thing and I start to think that I should not mention names because there are so many who do this little thing that has so much impact that I will be in trouble for forgetting somebody, and they don’t deserve to be forgotten. It’s like that when children get off the bus and say “hello”. I have to respond to this greeting business to nearly every child as they emerge at the doorway of the bus. And because they begin the conversation, I have to ask questions and I find that over time I am getting to know more about all of these little people and I find I ask specific things of different individuals because I get to know them better. It all seems to grow into a complex web of relationships. And it’s really nice. I am in a privileged position. Where else does this happen at such a grand scale. I am glad.

TRAFFIC GUIDELINES Each family would have received a copy of the Traffic Guidelines last Friday – please contact the office if you have not received a copy. We need a collective agreement where all of us community members will universally follow a small number of simple commitments to ensure that the possibilities of injury to our children are as restricted as we can possibly make it. Please read the ‘Traffic Guidelines’ and complete and return the form by Thursday 4 September to acknowledge that they have been sighted.

HEAD LICE It is such a difficult nuisance but we ask that all families carry out regular inspections for head lice at home. At this time of year, head lice are at their most persistent and we need to be collectively vigilant. Please be watchful for the live insects as this is where head lice are able to ‘jump’ to others. It would be advisable for girls to wear their hair tied back in a ponytail and/or plait. We will continue to carry out inspections at different times here at school, but regular checking, monitoring and treatment at home is the best way to control these pests.

THE GREAT SPACE CONUNDRUM COMPETITION You will notice inside the newsletter this week a poster for a whole school community competition. We have a ‘dead spot’ in our school grounds which needs to be given life. I know there is a family out there who has that one great idea that outshines the rest of us. We want you to give that idea to us. The idea selected will be rewarded with a prize to be announced. So get those creative brain cells on the move. Entries need to be forwarded to the office by Monday 15 September.

VISIT TO DUNKELD KINDERGARTEN This coming Wednesday 3 September, we will be transporting children from Years 4 and 5 across to the Dunkeld Kindergarten by bus; thus beginning the school’s relationship with the 2015 Prep Class. Children are asked to have a morning snack ready to take across with them on that morning. A separate container might be the most suitable. While at the Kindergarten, our students will read with the little ones, have a play time and share the snack time. We will be at the Kindergarten for about one hour. Permission slips have been sent home and need to be returned by Tuesday 2 September.

YEAR 2/3 NORVAL CAMP The Year 2/3 Norval Camp will be held from Wednesday 5 to 7 September. Students will be accompanied by staff members, Ann Howard and James Stephens, and parent, Adrian Field.

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS Parent/Teacher interviews will be held from Monday 15 to Thursday 18 September. Information detailing dates and times will be sent home with students this week.

From the Kitchen Garden…

BIG BAKE 100 YEARS CELEBRATION: Students and Friends of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program together with members of the Dunkeld Red Cross Unit will be baking on Monday 15 September to raise funds for the Australian Red Cross. The more orders we fill the more money we can donate to the Red Cross – People helping People. Please see the attached flyer for more details. Please complete and return your order form (and payment) to school by Tuesday 9 September. If you are able to donate your time to help on Monday 15 September please phone Clare Kennedy on 0427 823 308 by Friday 12 September. IN THE KITCHEN: Year 3 and 4 harvested cabbage, silverbeet, chives, lettuce, to be part of our delicious lunch that we prepared and shared together in the kitchen Thursday 28 August. The menu for the day: Ricotta, Silverbeet and Feta Rolls, which included our homemade ricotta, shredded silverbeet, chives and feta; sautéed, mixed and rolled in pastry. Okonomiyaki ( Japanese Pancakes) a great word for the children to pronounce and not too difficult to prepare. Shredded cabbage leaves from the garden together with grated potato, bacon and mushrooms mixed with a batter gently fried and flipped with great concentration and beautifully done. We served our pancakes with a delicious accompaniment of kewpie mayonnaise and kecap manis. (I have included the recipe for you to enjoy at home. Enjoy them with a green salad). Salad Leaves, silverbeet and calendula petals were harvested, gently washed, gently spun and displayed on large platters. Four salad dressings were shaken in jars so as we could vote for our favourite after tasting them all. Vinaigrette, Honey Mustard, Thai Chilli and Lemon and Olive Oil. Check out the voting in the kitchen to see which one was the favourite. Most children really wanted to vote for more than one…we really tested the taste buds! Year 3 children finally received a ‘knife licence’ after watching a video on knife safety and then practicing peeling and chopping up apples to accompany our salads. Well done Year 3. We will continue with knife safety, technique and behaviour next time in the kitchen together.

P & F NEWS

BOOKS & DVD’S WANTED: The P & F will have a Second

Hand Book Stall at the Discover Dunkeld Market Day again this year on Saturday 18 October. If you've got any books or DVD’s, in good condition, please drop off in the plastic tub marked “P & F Books” located in the staffroom at the school. Please contact Karen or Ally if you have a large quantity to donate and we can arrange pick up or a drop off spot other than the school.

ACTIVE AFTER-SCHOOL (AASC) We have been focusing on improving our skills in both golf and athletics. Newcomer to the team, Emma Gordon, introduced students to putting. Myles Hayley showed his natural talent in putting, winning nearest the pin in the “through the tunnel” challenge. The bigger lads of the group went off to practice their chipping, while the rest of us putted our way around obstacles. We focused on the importance of safety and golf clubs also. In Athletics, we focused on stride, jump and run. The kids enjoyed jumping hurdles, weaving and running to see who'd take out the relay. We couldn't quite get the idea of Stone, Bridge, Tree! There were stones, bridges and trees going everywhere! Quite a funny sight. Our sprint course on the little oval came to an abrupt halt when an overzealous magpie showed her displeasure of our being at within at least 100 metres of the nest. Well done to our leaders, Lucy Fraser, Ella Jackson, Thomas Gordon, Brodie Reynolds, Pippa Williamson, Matilda Potter, Charlie Field and George Field. Our leaders were extremely helpful in setting up and packing up activities. Students are encouraged to bring their runners and girls are asked to wear pants or shorts, not pinafores or dresses as some of the activities are hard to do in dresses. Summer hats must also be worn from Monday 1

September.

The first Active-After School session for Term 4 will be held on Wednesday 8 October and the last session will be held on Wednesday 26 November. For further details on the Active After-Schools program, please contact Ally Gordon on 0429 900 747.

AUSSIE FOOTY Overall the season went well with significant improvement in the whole team as the season progressed. As the younger boys’ confidence grew every game the improvement was evident with more tackling, smothers, shepherds and longer kicking. This improvement created more scoring opportunities and plenty of goals were kicked in most games, even in wet conditions. The majority of the team will still be available next year so the experience the younger children received this season has been great. We all look forward to next year with some new recruits (girls are encouraged to play). A big thank you to the Glenthompson/Dunkeld Football Club for supplying the boys with Rams jumpers. Thanks to all parents who helped during the season with transport, oranges, coaching and umpiring.

Dunkeld Rural Fire Brigade – monthly training commences Tuesday 9 September 7.30pm Dunkeld Museum Committee Meeting Monday 15 September 8.00pm Plantation/Class A Foam Training Sunday 21 September 9.30am SGSC Mobile Library – Dunkeld Visitor Information Centre Thursday 28 August 11.30am

COMMUNITY NEWS DUNKELD PUBLIC LANDS COMMITTEE Caravan Park It has been quiet lately. The units have had

reasonable occupancy. One unit had to be replumbed recently. The poly type piping burst twice. Sawmill We have had working bees to relocate a hut from

behind Bill and Elva Fitzpatrick’s house. We thank the Dunkeld Pastoral Company for allowing us to take the hut. The men are keen to hold an Open Day again this year. Tentative date is Saturday 12 October. We will cut timber and slabs. We also hope to provide demonstrations of an old 2 man saw, auto logging, woodturning, etc. We have some logs to cut, but need more. Red gum, sugar gum, stringybark, cyprus and messmate would be very suitable. The wet weather has made our collecting job difficult. Please contact me on 5577 2397 if you can help. The timber will be used at the sawmill, to redeck the jetty at the reservoir and some will be donated to Mulleraterong. Volunteering: Small towns are at a big disadvantage if they

don’t do things for themselves. We need volunteers to make Dunkeld and district a great place to live. We always seem to find volunteers to do jobs. However, keeping Committees going is always a problem. Few want to be on Committees. I can understand this, but we have to have Committees or nothing will happen. It is sad to see Dunkeld Adventure struggling to get enough members and unable to find a President or Secretary. This Committee oversees the Serra Terror and Wheel Fun events. They bring $1000s into the district. Dunkeld Adventure should be one of the most important Committees - overseeing events that attract participants from outside our district. This brings in so much money and takes the pressure off our residents. Let’s hope we can find some good people to continue the good work started by Maree and Heather. John Smith, President

DUNKELD FIRE BRIGADE As it is coming into spring it is a good time to start thinking about cleaning up around your blocks, yards and houses. It is also a good time to start talking about updating your fire plan for the summer. Your local brigade members have been busy training for this upcoming year, with wildfire, car crash, house, gas, car fire, First aid and chainsaw.

They will be continuing this with monthly training on the second Tuesday of every month. Starting 9

September at 7.30pm.

Anyone interested in joining please come along and have a look you will be most welcome. There is also Plantation/Class A Foam Training on the 21

September from 9.30am to 4.30pm. We really need everyone in the brigade who has not done Class A Foam Training to attend. Thank you for your dedication and giving up your time for the community. Michael Gordon

FROM THE LIONS DEN Last weekend our club was represented in Melbourne where the district chairpersons for Crime Watch were at a conference to discuss matters relating to the portfolio. Although we do not have a real crime problem here it is interesting to listen to people from Melbourne and other parts of the state and hear what their problems are. I believe that a vote of thanks is due to Bruce McNaughton and the work he does to keep our area safe. I read his article in the newsletter about the risks involved in trying to avoid animals on the road. A few days after this article appeared a driver swerved to miss a rabbit and rolled the car (in Central Victoria). One person was killed out- right, and three others injured with one in a serious condition. The Minister of Religion

A minister addressed his congregation from the pulpit during the Sunday service. He leaned over and said, “I have good news, the amount of money required for the renovations is available. He straightened up and said, “The only problem is, it is still in your wallets.” Peter Hinchey

ON THE BEAT The Western District is looking great at the moment. Trees are starting to bud up, the grass is green, crops are progressing nicely, water in the dams. A lot can change and any farmer will tell you that the crop is not in the silo yet. Given the rain that we’ve had I think the crops are looking pretty good. Farmers continue to improve the ways they go about growing a crop. It still amazes me how the farmer plants tiny seeds in a paddock and that solitary seed battles against the cold wind, wet, weeds, frost, birds, insects and yet more often than not, despite all the odds, that one seed produces a plant that multiplies the seed 20 fold or more.

After talking to tourists passing through Dunkeld, other regions of Australia are doing it very tough at the moment so we’re very fortunate here. The other day I had to drive to Melbourne to changeover the police vehicle. After departing Dunkeld at 3.30am in the new Dunkeld vehicle and making my way down to Melbourne, I finally got to depart Brunswick at around 3.30pm. Time to try out the GPS to calculate the best way home through the peak hour traffic. After putting in Ballarat as the intended destination I started following the instructions through Mt Alexander Road, Essendon and after 20 minutes and little progress I was already starting to think that this was a bad idea. Anyway, it took me onto the Calder Highway and then eventually onto the Keilor-Melton Road and as the traffic wasn’t too bad the GPS had started to restore my faith. All was going well until the row of cars in front of me stopped as I did, however, I could see in the rear view mirror that the driver following me was not going to be quite so lucky. I couldn’t evade the impact due to cars stopped in front of me so I made sure my footbrake was on firm and waited. Shortly thereafter, a loud bang with the sound of breaking plastic could be heard as he ran into the back of the police vehicle. Thinking that my long day had just grown considerably longer I got out and walked to the back of the Patrol. I was amazed to see that there was hardly a scratch on the police car because of the towbar. Unfortunately, the other driver wasn’t quite so lucky with his cars bonnet, front bumper and headlight all smashed up. At least he wasn’t injured. Needless to say I was very happy that the rest of the trip home was uneventful. So collisions can happen to anyone and you don’t have to be doing the wrong thing to be involved in one. Stay safe everyone and I hope you get the chance to enjoy some good weather to come.

This is the biography of Ralph Goode MBE, the first man from Lilydale to enlist in World War One and who after the war contributed greatly to the Lilydale community. The main part of the book are his war diaries and letters that give a personal account of the horror and heroism of serving as a stretcher bearer in Egypt, on Gallipoli and throughout the Western Front. For further information please contact the Mount Evelyn RSL Sub-Branch on 9737 0767. Cockatoo Rise Returned Service Persons Retreat: Annie

DUNKELD MUSEUM UPDATE

Guest Speaker Meetings: Our next Guest

Speaker Meeting will be held on Monday 1 September commencing at 8.00pm, followed by a light supper. Our guest speaker will be Mr

Tom Guthrie from Grampians Estate Winery, who has recently launched a book entitled “The Longest Drive”. This is the story of one family’s adventure as they continued to push the boundaries against the harshness of the outback environment. When the Northern Territory’s Barkly Tableland was auctioned for settlement, Thomas Guthrie took on his biggest challenge by purchasing one million acres; that set the scene for the longest sheep drive in Australian history. Eleven thousand sheep left the North-West Victorian property “Rich Avon” in September 1882. Annual Membership: A reminder that annual membership of

$10.00 is now due. Deductible Gift Recipient status: The Dunkeld Museum has

been endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR). Donors can claim a tax deduction on any donations made to the museum. Committee Meeting: Our next monthly Committee Meeting will

be held on Monday 15 September commencing at 8:00pm at the Dunkeld Museum. Red Cross: As part of the world’s

largest humanitarian movement, Red Cross has been part of the fabric of Australian life for 100 years. To find out more about the many ways to support Red Cross, please visit www.redcross.org.au/centenary The Dunkeld Museum has a display of memorabilia courtesy of the Dunkeld Red Cross Unit. The following is an excerpt from the Dunkeld & District – A Short History book:

The Red Cross is a totally different type of organisation as it is an international body which offers help to soldiers and civilians in every country wherever there is suffering caused by war or natural disasters. They also help with

rehabilitation, the aged and the Blood Bank and many other areas. During the Frist World War, it provided amenities for injured servicemen and prisoners of war. Many of those who worked for the Comforts Fund pitched in and helped at their Red Cross Branches too. When World War 2 started, a branch was formed at Karabeal with Mrs S.A. Penry as President and Mrs R.W. McIntyre, Secretary. She retained the minutes of the years 1939-1946 and they are rich in detail of the lives of the community as they

battled to keep the farms going and their morale high when so many of their men were away. Chinese chequer nights, dances and card nights were popular for relaxation from the hard work and knitting. At Moutajup, Mrs Walker had a web of cords and string around her kitchen as she made camouflage nets for the army to cover guns. Other branches were at Mirranatwa, Victoria Valley, Dunkeld, Glenthompson and Woodhouse. Dunkeld had an ex-World War 1 nurse as President in Mrs T.L. Simpson, and she had a band of hard workers including Mesdames Charlie Bates, A. Robertson, Harold Myers, A. McArthur, W. Collins, E. Cox, J. Cullinane, J. Hadden, J. Downes, P. Gee, and Misses M. and K. Cullinane, Bobby and Joan Woodburn (later Mrs R. Bade), E. Templeton (Mrs Bob Gordon) and G. and J. Ballinger. The following Dunkeld Red Cross members have received prestigious long service awards: Mrs Milly Young (dec) – 70 years, Mrs Catherine (Kitty) Funk (dec) – 60 years and Mrs Muriel Macgugan (dec) – 50 years. Museum Duty: A new roster will be forwarded to all volunteers

in the near future. Please remember if you are unable to carry out your duty on your rostered day could you please contact one of the other volunteers to arrange a swap.

Okonomiyaki (Japanese Pancakes) Ingredients (serves 8): 3 cups of plain flour 1/2 potato, peeled, grated 2 eggs 2 cups water 3 green cabbage leaves, shredded 6 green onions, sliced 100g button mushrooms, sliced 2 tablespoons olive oil 4 rashers bacon, rind removed, diced 100g bean sprouts Sauce: 2 tablespoons thick, sweet Japanese soy sauce 1/2 cup Japanese mayonnaise or Kewpie Method: 5. Mix together flour, potato, eggs, a pinch of salt and enough water

to form a batter the consistency of thickened cream. Add cabbage, bean shoots, green onions and mushrooms and diced bacon

6. Heat a little oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat. Spoon mixture per pancake into frying pan. Cook for 10 minutes.

7. Turn pancake over and cook for 10 to 15 minutes or until pancake is cooked through. Keep warm and repeat with remaining pancake batter.

8. To make sauce: Combine soy sauce and mayonnaise. Serve pancakes warm with sauce.

SPORTS REPORT GRAMPIANS GOLF CLUB NEWS The Grampians Golf Club hosted its annual tournament from the 14th to 17th of August and we were all pleased with the events held. As usual the volunteer input from club members to get the course up to good playing was vital as was the input into food prep and presentation, manning the bar, running the office, organising sponsors and choosing trophy prizes. Visitors were happy to be at the club and the weather was mostly kind. So a big thank you to all those supporting the club. I mentioned our great sponsors in the last newsletter but kept some of the fantastic businesses and individuals to mention now for greater impact - here they are: Shellie Peardon, Grampians Gardening & Landscaping, Izzy's Mountain View Cafe, Drummonds Golf- Ballarat, Raivac Transports, Southern Grampians Plumbing, Grampians Agricultural, Mary-Ann Brown & Associates-AMP, Cafe 109, Barry Francis, K&K Cowland Earthmovers, T.Brody Shed Fabrication, Bunyip Hotel, Southern Grampians Shire, McLeod & Holmes Engineering, Dunkeld Race Club, Dennis Fitzpatrick, Wannon Rural Supplies, Craig Collins Builder, Dale Collins Fencing, Murray Arnold, Brewster Walsh Accountants, Grampians Tyres, Hopkins River Beef. All sponsorship donations of money, vouchers and goods were all used during the tournament as prizes for events held or the tounament competition. The generosity of our sponsors has attracted players to the club to compete for the great trophy prizes on offer and so we are thankful for this continued support. Cheers Kerren Collins - Ladies Captain
