Thoughts from your District Governor ...2-S2’S NEW ROAR: “WE CAN DO IT”Hello Fellow Lions,

Well it is that time of year again. Eight months have gone by like a bullet! To all District 2-S2 clubs, it’s time for new officers for 2014-2015. All clubs must report (PU101) to international and to the 1st VDG Lion Chris Moorman.

The deadline is April 15th, the time is now. 1st VDG Chris needs them so he can get the District Directory

printed. Let’s get Lion Chris’s year off to a big start.

The District Convention, May

2nd & 3rd, is all in order. The theme this year is “JAZZ IT UP”. You will get entertainment on Friday night by a great high

school Jazz Band and they will keep

your feet tapping and a smile on your face.

You don’t want to miss this!

Saturday will be full of fun and excitement too! At lunch, we all get to see who will receive the prestigious PDG outstanding achievement award. And at Saturday nights banquet, you will get to see who wins the Membership Contest and the Club Visitation awards and listen to some great words by IPID Joe Al Picone.

The convention is being held at the Hilton North at Greenspoint and IH45. It is a great location and great hotel.

Be sure and get the list of great Lions who are in Heaven holding their meeting up there.

make their world a little better. Think about it – just stop and think about it. What would the WORLD

be like if there were no Lions, no one to help the blind, the hungry, those without food

everyday and without shelter from the weather, without clothing, unable to attend school – and so on and so on. What Melvin Jones started is up to us to grow and be strong and brave. As Helen Keller said, “You with a heart, this is not the time

to give up, this is not the time to say we quit”. Yes, times have changed

but what we do, “WE SERVE”, has not. Get the passion back that you had! The kids at

camp need us, the kids in school need us, seniors need us, and the list will never end.

Think about it, 2017 we will celebrate 100 years – is District 2-S2 going to be there for that celebration????

I truly hope to see every club, every member from District 2-S2 at the District Convention. I would love to have the biggest turn out in years! But mainly, I would love to be able to say “Thank You” personally to all members for allowing me to be your District Governor. We have had a great year and had lots of fun, attended many club functions, visited many, many clubs and just enjoyed every minute. I will remember this experience for the rest of my life and just be grateful to have had the opportunity.

Thoughts from the 1st Vice District Governor ...

Edward Everett Hale was an interesting man. He was a child prodigy who graduated from the Boston Latin School at the age of 13 and then immediately enrolled at Harvard College. He graduated second in his class at the age of 17 and then studied at the Harvard Divinity School. He went on to a life of a preacher and author, with his best known work being “The Man Without a Country.”

In 1902 one of his statements was

published in A Year of Beautiful Thoughts. “I am only one, but I am one. I can’t do everything, but I can do something. The something I ought to do, I can do. And by the grace of God, I will” Many times you

will hear this quote or one of its later variants attributed to Helen Keller, perhaps she quoted it in a speech. It is easy to see why it is often attributed to Helen Keller. It shares the same type of message as the ones Helen Keller did speak when she urged Lions to be Knights of the Blind.

Mr. Hale wasn’t a Lion, he died in 1909 before we even existed as Lions. However the message he

provided strikes at the core of what being a Lion means. As a person, I can’t do everything. I can’t help cure blindness. I can’t provide shelter for this displaced by natural disasters. I can’t provide leader dogs for the blind. I can’t provide a camp for Texas children who have physical disabilities or diabetes. I can however sell drinks. I can sell chili dogs. I can help out with putting out flags around Liberty. I can operate a shovel and a wrench. All of this are minor things, but added with the work of other Lions in my club, the state and the world. We CAN cure blindness. We CAN provide shelter for people displaced by natural disasters. We CAN provide leader dogs for those who are blind. We CAN provide a camp for Texas children with physical disabilities, diabetes or Down Syndrome. We

Thoughts from the 2nd Vice District Governor ...At the recent Advanced Lions Leadership Institute last weekend, I heard the term “elevator story”. For those , like myself, unfamiliar with that term, I’ll give you the definition. Your “elevator story” is what you would tell a person about Lions Clubs International/your lions club in the time you are in a elevator with them. So, what would my elevator story be? Well, maybe more than one. The first would talk about what Lions stand for – fellowship, leadership development, net working, concerned for the environment,

emergency response, promoting service, helpful, diversity, patriotism, friendship, fun, person fulfillment, health , found around the world, Melvin Jones, Helen Keller, Knights of the Blind, Sight FIrst. Maybe you can add to those terms. The second “elevator story” could be about Lions in Texas – Texas Lions Camp, helping typhoon victims, providing emergency help to natural - hurricane, fire- disasters, eye glass collections, multi-club projects within the district or state. A third story could be your club – besides many of the characteristics listed the first story, you could

add your club’s project – installing sidewalks, installing water systems, passing out toys at Christmas, cleaning highways, Christmas

parades, putting out American and Texas flags, providing scholarships, recognizing students of the month, passing out dictionaries, cooking briskets or chickens or pancakes or

fish, taking kids fishing, repairing homes… the list

goes on and on. But it is your story as a Lion. People want to hear your story and they want to be part of it. So tell it. Your story is rich. Your story is moving. Your story is powerful. God Bless you.

Ethics, Integrity, and Conflicts of Interest

Lions Clubs are an association based upon service, and the manner in which the service is rendered is fully as important as the service itself. Lions Clubs, and any other charitable organizations, can be subject to intense public scrutiny. Our communities expect honest and ethical conduct from each of us every day. No act on the part of any member, officer, staff, board of directors, or a club can justify the breach of this principle. These are our ethics!

Lions Clubs International insists on the highest standards of personal and professional conduct. We must honor our commitments and take individual responsibility for all actions and outcomes … within and apart from our Lions activities. We must always do the right thing even when nobody is looking. This is our integrity!

What happens when unavoidable conflicts of interest occurs, e.g. where an individuals’ obligation to further the organization’s charitable purposes is at odds with their own financial interests? We have to look no further than our Lions Code of Ethics for guidance. One of our codes states:

“WHENEVER a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or actions towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself.”

The Internal Revenue Service provides some guidance regarding conflicts of interest to help us

“… avoid the appearance or actuality of private benefit to individuals who are in a position of substantial authority.” A Conflict of Interest Policy is strongly suggested by the IRS for all charitable organizations. A policy that might be adopted by Lions Clubs could read:

The (name) Lions Club shall not enter into any transaction or arrangement that might benefit the private interest of any officer or director of this club, that violates the conflicts of interest policies of Lions Clubs International or that, violates any other applicable state and federal laws governing conflict of interest application to nonprofit and charitable organizations. The board of directors shall adopt policies and procedures as appropriate and necessary to ensure the club operates in a manner consistent with its charitable purpose and does not engage in activities that could jeopardize its tax-exempt status, if applicable.

Our best judgment is essential in doing the “right” thing at all times. We are all responsible for continuing the Lions Clubs’ tradition of honest and ethical practices in serving millions of people in our communities.

Congressman Kevin Brady was the guest of the Huntsville Li-ons Club during their regular noon meeting on Thursday, February 13. Brady spoke on several key pieces of legisla-tion that recently were passed by Congress. Huntsville Lions Club President Liesa Hackett (left) looks on.


The 12th annual Humble Lions Club Bike Ride was held on Saturday February 15, 2014 benefitting handicapped and diabetic children through the Texas Lions Camp and the Hearts Scholarship Foundation. Four Lions Clubs in District 2-S2 come together to make the event a success each year. The five clubs are: 1.) Humble Lions Club, 2.) Klein Lions Club, 3.) Huffman Lions Club, and 4.) Houston East End Lions Club. This event is a “BP MS 150 Recommended Ride” and requires many volunteers from the Lions Clubs to ensure a successful event for the approximate 500 bicycle riders each year.

One of those Lion volunteers, Past District Governor Bill Hughes of the Klein Lions Club, received an e-mail from a participant in the event. That e-mail is shared here:

Thursday February 20, 2014

Bill, You met me as a ride marshal last Saturday. I have been on the Humble Lions ride these past several years in honor and memory of a Lion named Arthur Greif. He was married to a lady named Pauline. I have lost touch with their family. Arthur Greif was an ordinary guy who sold cars for a living. His kids were grown and gone when I was a kid. He and Pauline met my parents when we attended a church in Port Arthur, Texas. I was not a well behaved kid. Our home life was not great. For some reason, still unexplained, Arthur Greif decided that he wanted a surrogate son to attend a Lion’s Club Christmas party with him and he picked me. That type of thing probably wouldn’t happen today. Mr. Greif showed up at the house. I hopped into his car and we went to a church in Port Neches where we had dinner, ate dessert, and Santa Claus made an appearance. It was a little awkward for both of us. I didn’t know any of the other kids at the party. Many of them knew each other. Mr. Greif wasn’t really a relative, but he fit the role as well as he could. Nothing happened that was remarkably good or bad. There was just this nice guy who showed some kindness and took me to a party. I got some cake, got a small toy, and had a slightly intimidated good time. The next year, Mr. Greif called again and took my sister along with me. Again, that is something that would be rare in today’s world. Things were a little more comfortable. We had a good time. There was nothing really big going on, just some kindness and some attention and a guy who was nice to us. In my world at the time, that was significant and rare and I am still grateful. We went to the party for several years and we got to know the Greifs pretty well. For a while, we lived within bicycle distance of their house. Eventually, they retired, moved to the Houston area to be closer to their kids and passed

away. I don’t have a good way to say thank you to any of the family. I know that Mr. Greif acted out of his own kindness and sense of purpose, but he was working in the context of a Lion’s Club and he did not do these things by himself. The context of the kindness and our acceptance and inclusion by the other Lions was important. So, I hope that helping you guys support your work is a proper expression of thanks for one of your honored members. If you know any of his kids, please tell them that their father did something that was remembered as significant and is still remembered today.

2014 Texas Lions Camp Harry Wickersham Golf Tournament Camper Representative – Anthony Reyes

Nine-year-old Anthony Reyes, a third year camper to Texas Lions Camp in 2013, is the camper representative for the 2014 Harry Wickersham Golf Tournament benefiting Texas Lions Camp. A camper is chosen every year to represent all campers and the “Can do” philosophy they embody. A camper must have a spirit of the possible no matter limitations placed before them. Anthony is a perfect example of the possible. Anthony’s mother discussed his deafness and the growth of Anthony over the years that he has come to Texas Lions Camp.

Anthony’s hearing loss was found early, when he was 10 months old, but denial and not sure of what to do, his family delayed medical attention and he did not begin using hearing aids until he was around 3 years old. Anthony found it difficult to be different from other kids around him and rejected his deafness and refused to sign, so that others wouldn’t see him as different. He has always wanted his “voice” to be heard and would talk rather than sign. He soon realized that his hearing impairment was not something that he could ignore. Anthony went to camp 3 years ago, because a Lion in our area never gave up on him or me. I was hesitant about signing him up, and then agreeing to let him go. I wondered if the staff would take care of him like I did, meet his needs, and make him eat. How would anyone understand him? As a family, Anthony’s world is our world, and our world is his world. It is difficult for the outside world to see this and understand it. But at Texas Lions Camp, they get it. Anthony is accepted at TLC and he loves it. He has friends and counselors that when he sees them each time he comes now it is like seeing family. The counselors are wonderful and

when they sign to him, he feels supported, more confident and comfortable. The first step of letting him go was hard, but it made a difference, a difference to him and to our family. I remember being at the awards night and seeing his group entering the amphitheater. When he came around the corner and I saw him, I cried. It was just a feeling of excitement and amazement. The first thing that he said to me was, “Mom, I caught a fish!” It was incredible. TLC gave him something that we can’t as a family. They offered him an experience that built his confi-dence and gives him opportunities to build his character. Texas Lions Camp makes it possible to help him make choices, set goals for himself, be kind and work with others, basically all the good stuff in life. Every parent needs to experience what TLC can give them – and especially what it gives their child.

Anthony’s mother went on to say that Anthony is in mainstream classes at school and has assistance from an interpreter throughout his school day. Because of his hearing loss, he is behind in his reading ability, but this doesn’t dissuade his appetite to read. Recently, he was awarded the reading award for the entire 3rd grade for reading the most books. The confidence he has gained through his family, friends and TLC help him face his challenges and succeed. Anthony is particularly excited about being a part of this year’s Harry Wickersham Golf Tournament at the end of the summer sessions for 2014. Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organization in theworld. We have more than 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs worldwide.

Lions are everywhere. We're men and women active in more than 200 countries andgeographic areas.

Lions serve. Our motto is “We Serve.” Founded in 1917, we are best known for fighting blindness,but we also feed the hungry, aid seniors and the disabled, and care for the environment. Lions are aglobal service network of volunteers that make a difference in their local communities.

Lions give sight. By conducting vision screenings, equipping hospitals and clinics, distributingmedicine and raising awareness of eye disease, Lions work toward the goal of providing vision for all.Through programs such as SightFirst, Lions have helped provide more than 147 million treatments forriver blindness, 10 million doses of a sight-saving drug to prevent trachoma, and eye screenings formore than 15 million children.

Lions serve youth. Our community projects often support children and local schools throughscholarships, recreation and mentoring. Internationally, we offer many programs to empower youth,including the Peace Poster Contest; youth camps and exchanges; and Lions Quest, a positive youthdevelopment program.

Our Leo clubs help young people develop leadership skills while impacting their communities throughservice. There are approximately 157,000 Leos and 6,000 Leo clubs in more than 200 countries andgeographic areas worldwide.

Lions receive grants and the world receives benefits. Since 1968, Lions ClubsInternational Foundation (LCIF) has awarded more than $811 million in grants to support Lions’humanitarian projects. As the official charitable organization of Lions Clubs International, LCIF helpsLions improve the lives of millions of people through four pillars of service: saving sight, supportingyouth, providing disaster relief and meeting humanitarian needs. Through the Foundation’s generoussupport of large-scale humanitarian initiatives, Lions are able to extend their reach from localcommunities to the global community in order to serve those who need us most.

The next Operation FREE Flu Shot for ages 18 MONTHS to 18 yrs old will be held Tuesday March 25, 2014 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Notre Dame Parish Hall hosted by the Parish Social Concerns Ministry and will be sponsored by the Harris County Hospital District.

Houston Royal Oaks Lions Club of Lions District 2-S2 is committed to helping promote the health and well being of the people in the community. This Influenza Prevention Campaign is a yearly project that the Lions undertake in addition to the Health, Education and Community Resources Fairs they sponsor hand in hand with other Lions Clubs and in partnership with the other organizations who are willing to give back and serve the community .

PawPrints is the official publication of Lions District 2-S2, which encompasses Chambers, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, San Jacinto, Walker, and Waller counties in Lions Multiple District 2, Texas. As of publication date, District 2-S2 has 62 Lions Clubs serving their communities throughout the District.

All ads and hard-copy subscriptions run August - June each Lions year. Hard-copy (B&W only) subscriptions available for $50 per year. Business card ad (3 ½ x 2) is $100 per year, quarter page ad $200 per year, half page ad is $300 per year, full page ad is $400 per year. Ad for club project FREE for one month. Make checks payable to Lions District 2-S2 and send to District Treasurer.
