Public Health Department Website The WA Health Department website has been extremely helpful in recent weeks and contains a lot of other helpful information around public health and is worth browsing for other interesting programs and healthy ideas.

https://healthywa.wa.gov.au

Once again, I thank all families in our local community for their understanding, cooperation and total support of the school with managing the delayed start to school for students who had recently travelled abroad.

Kiss and Go Zones The recent improvements to these zones has certainly made a difference to the flow of traffic during peak times. However, I do remind to parents who use the Concraige Way Kiss and Go, that the “clockwise” flow of traffic, which is a local safety measure, allows cars to enter the extended Kiss and Go and make their way to the pick-up zone where they collect their children. Residents of streets in the adjacent area can of course can travel in either direction.

Please also take note of;

Park in designated parking areas and avoid using neighbours verges

Take note of the newly extended no standing zones

Aboid using any of the staff car parks and

Try and use the car park at Prendwich Reserve and walk the short distance to school

Your continued cooperation with the traffic measures is appreciated.

Coding Club “Rostrata Coding Club for 2020 has begun this week. The interest in this program has been phenomenal with 116 students applying for one of only 60 places! Our two sessions this year are running on Tuesday and Friday mornings with students working at a wide range of levels, from beginner coders trying their hand at block-based programming to advanced coders exploring projects of personal interest. The students will have the opportunity to use a variety of apps on their iPads as well as explore robotics in the Robot Arena and, for the older students, fly drones in the Drone Zone. For those lucky students who have been accepted for this term please make sure your permission slips are returned and you are bringing your iPad with the appropriate apps to all sessions. For beginners the apps you will need are; Hopscotch, Tynker, and mBlock Blockly. All the logins you require will be given to you at coding club. Intermediate coders will require Swift Playgrounds. It would be helpful if you could download the Learn to Code 1 playground at home. Advanced coders do not have specific apps required as this will depend on the project chosen. I can’t wait to see what everyone achieves this year and as always, if you have any questions please feel free to send me an email.”

Parent Workshop – Device Management at Home The school is again offering this workshop for parents whose children are new to the iPad program to be held in the Library on Friday 13 March between 9:00 – 10:30am. The session will cover setting up of screen time on the iPad and some external apps that might be useful. The feedback from parents last year indicated that this was extremely valuable so we look forward to seeing as many parents as possible attend.

School Board Meeting The first meeting of the school board for 2020 will be on Monday 16 March in the Library. Mrs Cheryl Chan is the Chair of the Board and other parent representatives for 2020, are;

Ibrahim Omeri, Khim Teh, Les Lowe, Kwang Ngui and Veronica Zelada.

Phase Two of High Priority Maintenance Rostrata PS has been fortunate in receiving additional funds for school maintenance. This will primarily focus on replacing old vinyl floor coverings and some internal and external painting.

I hope that the vinyl floor replacement work can occur during the next school holidays and the painting to occur on weekends holidays to minimize inconvenience to our school operations.

Power Outage - Canteen Sales Over the weekend Western Power will provide a power upgrade to the school. Accordingly, power will be cut during Saturday and Sunday but reinstated at night for security.

The good news for students is that there is a special on; paddle pops only $1 and frozen juice cups for 50 cents.

Please note that there will be no sales of; Sushi, butter chicken or noodles on Friday.

ICY POLE SALE TOMORROW ONLY!! Paddle pop - $1-00

Captains in Canberra Our twelve school captains and three staff are in Canberra next week attending this leadership camp. They will have the opportunity to visit places such as the War Memorial, both Old and New Parliament House, The Australian Institute of Sport and the National Library and meet with the Hon Ben Morton MP and Hon Linda Reynolds, Minister for Defence.

Whilst the Canberra camp provides a lot of opportunities to see leadership in action at the Federal Government level, visit national landmarks and appreciate our Australian heritage and history, for the school, it is also a unique time for strong team work to develop, understanding of their roles and building a deeper sense of responsibility and commitment. There are also opportunities for the staff to lead reflection sessions that relate their new experiences and understandings back to the expectations and roles they have as school captains when they return.

We wish them a safe and rewarding trip and look forward to them sharing all that they have gleaned.

Einstein Project A number of teachers at Rostrata have joined the international collaboration with the University of WA to simplify, improve and introduce at an early age, the importance and relevance of teaching the fundamental principles of Einsteinian physics in primary schools.

Emeritus Professor David Blair is leading this collaboration and is well known for his drive to establish the Gravity Discovery Centre at Gin Gin and his research to detect gravitational waves.

This programs will include simple understandings of the physics behind; climate change, solar panels, cameras, photosynthesis and sight, how phones navigate using clocks and the speed of travel and space travel and many curiosities. It all sounds very exciting and our involvement will help shape this direction within our school.

Millennium Kids A group of ten students from Year 5 and 6, together with Mrs Dawson will attend the Changing Your World Youth Conference – Millennium Kids 1000 Actions for the Planet on Friday 6 March. This will bring together 100 young people from across the City of Canning to have a say about things that they care about.

Supported by Millenium Kids, The City of Canning and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions the aim is to identify the issues and challenges in our community, design solutions and present these ideas to the decision makers in the City at the end of the day.

I am looking forward to hearing these bright ideas and as a school, adopt and assist the implementation of these ideas where we can. It is an exciting project that gives young people a voice and to lead change within our community. We wish them well!

KITCHEN NEWS

The Year 6 made delicious Mexican wraps this week, seasoning them with Fajita flavouring, cannellini beans and fresh leeks from the garden as well as lettuce, cheese and tomato.

They were topped with sour cream and nacho sauce.

Well done!

The Year 5 students made salad wraps and were very organised, showing excellent culinary skills.

CLASS NEWS – B7

Assembly notice : Abbie: Good morning, I am Abbie and this is James. We are from and B7. We are doing a fundraiser inspired by the recent catastrophic bushfires over east. We will be researching how we can use the money raised locally, possibly even in our school grounds. We are all concerned about climate change and want to make a difference.

James: To do this we will be doing a coin trail. A coin trail is where we will draw an outline of Australia and we hope you will bring coins which have Australian native animals on them. From the next Senior assembly, after assembly, you will be able to donate. You will also be able to donate the following Thursday. Thank you and have a good day.

ITALIAN NEWS

Parliamo italiano!

Benvenuti a scuola per 2020!

It has been an exciting start to the school year with many new students in Years 4-6 starting their Italian language and cultural journey. I’ve been impressed at the way our new students have embraced the growth mindset we have at Rostrata and are “having a go!”

This week starts Carnevale time in countries throughout the world but especially in Italy. Carnevale is a period of about two weeks before the start of Lent or Quaresima in Italian. Carnevale is a word of Latin origin that shows meat disappears, as during Lent some people don’t eat meat for religious reasons. People in Italy right now are finishing their elaborate costumes and/or floats for parades that will take place during Carnevale 2020. Bakeries or home chefs will also be making special traditional sweets to celebrate this special time of year. Two of these are pictured but they are given different names depending where in Italy they are eaten!

These can be called Cenci, Chiacchere, Lattughe and Nastrini but in Rome the most well-known of carnevale foods goes by the name of frappe.

These are doughnut-like balls that northern Italians call Fritelle.

Well I hope that whet your appetito!

A presto!

Signora Natalie Rechichi Italian Teacher & PBS Team Leader

WHOLE SCHOOL FOCUS AREA – WEEK 3 & 4

Lessons :

I keep everyone safe I play safely

PHYS ED Specialist Lesson: I am Sun Smart and wear my hat outside.

WELL-BEING

From the Health and Well-Being Team This is an awareness raising message that we are sharing with the staff and the whole community.

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, “How heavy is this glass of water?” Answers called out ranged from 250ml to 500ml.

The lecturer replied, “the absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you’ll probably have to call an ambulance. In each case it is the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.”

He continued, “And that’s the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on. As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.”

So before you return home from work tonight or the family arrives home after a busy day, put the burden of work/life down. “Don’t carry it with you. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you’re carrying now, set them down for a moment if you can. Relax; pick them up later after you’ve rested.” It is up to you… spend some time doing what refreshes you. Enjoy!”

Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you today!

SPORT NEWS

Welcome back, Sports Fans! 2020 is going to be an exciting year for sports (Tokyo Olympics!) and the PE Department is kicking off for another great year of sports at Rostrata.

WELCOME, MR BURKE We’d like to welcome Mr Brendan Burke to the PE Department. Mr Burke will be teaching Year 2 and 3 classes and coordinating Middle School Sports this year.

Running Club 2020 There are big changes being made to Running Club this year – we’ve gone digital! The good news continues: contrary to what had been announced last year, students will NOT lose any laps that they finished the year on. Instead, students will continue to use the old “punch and go” strip system until they reach their next “00” milestone. They will then be issued an ID card and begin the new digital system. All current Running Club participants will have until the end of Term 1 to finish their strips so that all participants will be using the digital system by the beginning of Term 2. All Year 3’s and students new to Running Club will be issued an ID card straight away. Students from Year 4-6 can pick up their ID card at Running Club (Year 3’s will collect their card from their classroom teacher). Running Club will be held on the school oval every Monday and Thursday, beginning at 8am. New-comers are welcome to join at any time.

Scisa Summer Carnival The SCISA Summer Carnival is an annual inter-school event for Year 5 and 6 students and will be held in Week 9 of this term (more details will be released closer to the event). The sports include Cricket, Basketball, Tee-ball and Volleyball. All students have nominated a sport which they would like to try out for but please be aware: due to the popularity of some sports, some students will not get their first preference, however any student who misses out on their first preference this term will get their first choice for the Winter Carnival in Term 2. The final Winter Carnival teams will be selected and announced by Week 6.

Please Remember… A gentle reminder to students to please remember to wear a hat and appropriate shoes and to bring a water bottle to PE lessons. Please also remember to wear sunscreen every day.

Faction Points Faction points are handed out during PE lessons to those students who demonstrate good skills, good sportsmanship and follow the CARE motto. Well done to those students who have already received faction points.

Sports Challenge – Anywhere Cricket Backyard cricket is as Australian as “shrimps on a barbie” (probably more so). Taking the tradition one step further is Anywhere Cricket – a game of cricket you can literally play anywhere – the beach, the park, at school. Grab a few mates and design your own game of Anywhere Cricket, remembering to keep your game fair and fun for everyone.

ROSTRATA P & C NEWS

P&C AGM

The P&C will be holding its AGM on Monday 24th February, at 7pm in the school library. We always welcome new members to the P&C and encourage anyone interested in helping to improve and develop Rostrata Primary to come along. We meet four times a year in General Meetings, being once per term, usually the Monday evening in Week 3. Being a financial member (for the grand total of $1 per year) gives you full voting rights on any motion put forward, and also allows you to nominate for a position on the Executive Committee and/or join any of the sub-committees that make up the P&C. If you’re not sure that you are able to commit to anything, but would still like to help, I would recommend that you come along and see how we work. There can be as little or as much time committed as you like, and most of the roles in the association require minimal work. Without all the members of our organisation, we wouldn’t have such things as Discos, lap-a-thons, shade sails over play areas, Mathletics subscriptions, etc.

The AGM is an especially important meeting, as we need to successfully nominate and vote in an Executive Committee (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and not less than three (3) other members) as well as Sub-Committee members. The Executive Committee is responsible for handling P&C matters when a General Meeting is not in session and is also responsible for running the meetings. If you wish to nominate for a position, please complete the appropriate section on the form that will be sent home with your child and bring it along on the night. If you need another copy of the form, you can get one on the night.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our first meeting of 2020!

Rostrata Dads

If you’d like to keep informed about the group and its future dads/dads and kids events (ours and those of The Fathering Project), email us at [email protected] and we’ll add you to the list.

Our next event is the dads and kids school oval camp out on Saturday and Sunday 14/15 March: dads and their children pitch tents on Saturday afternoon on the school oval and stay the night. Much fun is had by all! Send us an email to let us know you're coming.

Here's the list of all the Rostrata Dads events planned for 2020:

Sat 14 March - School Oval Camp Out Sun 24 May - Lesmurdie Falls Fri 12 June - Lawn Bowls Night (Dads only) Sat 8 August - Aviation Museum, Bull Creek Drive Sun 1 November - Bike Ride from School

Tip of the week: use technology when travelling.

School Banking

Great to see so many students at school banking on Wednesday morning. Lovely to see lots of regular bankers back and some new faces as well. New bankers are always welcome. All you need to do is open a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver Account either at your local branch or online. Come to see our friendly volunteers in the undercover area every Wednesday morning 8.15-8.45am with your account details to get started. Collect a token each time you bank, and swap 10 tokens for a prize.
