here are four basic commitments that come out of the book ofActs:

. To learn

. To care

. To fellowship

. To worship

o learn: they devoted themselves to the Apostle's teaching. Whatwas the Apostle's teachings? They did not have the luxury of theNew Testament to use as a point of reference...they were writinghe New Testament! What they had was what they had witnessed.hey devoted themselves to the Apostles testimonies of what theyad observed Jesus doing on a day by day basis.

Not only did the Apostles share what they had seen, they also

assed on the mandate to their followers to carry on the mission ofChrist.

o care: they were moved with compassion to care for those insidend outside the community of believers. They sold thereossessions and gave to those in need as just one example of thisommitment to others.

o fellowship: Adam was created for fellowship with God. Godwants us to be in relationship with Him and with the other believers

nd to share life with one another. Forsaking not to assembleogether is not a suggestion. God wants us to live in community

with one another. They met daily in the Acts days...we surely canommit to a regular schedule of getting His family together.

o worship: worship is more than singing and playing music toGod. Worship is living our lives unto God with appreciation and

iving God our whole life worship in every act we do. Sundayworship in song is just one aspect of the worshipper’s life!

esus sat with His disciples at the Last Supper table just before Hewould go to the cross. Somehow I imagine Him going over

verything one more time with his disciples, making sure theynderstood they needed to carry on His mission once He ascendedo Heaven. He had come with a purpose that is revealed in the

Gospels and He was leaving that mission with those closest to Him.When He died on the cross and was resurrected His spirit waseleased upon those He left behind. Immediately they were filled

with His spirit and began to carry on the work He had started.

is our responsibility to carry on the work that Jesus had started!

Easter is around the corner. Take time to read the scripture abouthe resurrection, the empowerment and look at the model Jesus lefts to learn and to follow in order for His work to be completed!

Just for TodayJust for TodayJust for TodayJust for Today

“Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow

ast October when Neal lost his job ansource of income, I found myself thinkinscripture quite a bit. I’ve heard from othebeen laid-off or let-go that finding a job is

this economy”. When I heard and thought abwords of Jesus constantly played over in my miworrying.

I learned a lot through this trial and the biggest lewhen you are going through a battle, it is very“Stay in the Moment”. I remember driving down tday and my mind rehearsing the “what ifs”.doesn’t find a job? What if we can’t pay our bills?

has to take a job that he doesn’t like? What if hedepressed? Then I remembered, “Don’ttomorrow…” Focusing on what I was doingmoment, how I was not hungry, how beautiful thand how thankful I was to have a vehicle to drivenot worry.

There were many moments of time that couldruined by worry. Sometimes Neal and I would sitporch, enjoying the weather and looking out at thplanted during his forced time-off and I would thinthe moment could be spent worrying or enjoying ocompany. Neal is now employed and none of thethat tried to play in my mind has come to pass. Ithat 90% of the things we fear never come to pass.

Similar to the saying: “Stay in the Moment” is thefor Today”. This also has its roots in Jesus’ admworry about tomorrow. “Just For Today” I can“Just for Today” I can choose to not eat pie. “Justcan choose to exercise. “Just for Today” I canstatement make me angry. “Just for Today” I cearly. “Just for Today” I can give my worries to Gthis way has made a huge impact on my life.about giving up something forever it seems too oWhen I think about fitting exercise into my busythe rest of my life, it is just too big of a thought.Today” I can do anything.

The Tonia interpretation of “Do not worry aboutranslates: Do not try to think too far ahead.moment and realize that grace and strength comeminute you need it. re.More and more Americans are starving for significant

elationships. In a recent Christianity Today Editorial, “Look at Allhe Lonely People” says, “As of 2004, the average American hadjust two close friends, compared with three in 1985. Thoseeporting no confidants at all jumped from 10 percent to 25ercent. Even the share of Americans reporting a healthy circle ofour or fine friends had plunged from 33 percent to just over 15ercent.”

If there were an arena in which friendships should and couldevelop, I would think it would be in the church community. Iecently went to a Christian conference for pastors and churcheaders. The participants were very congenial nevertheless coy.hese leaders were proper and polished but not interested innjoying each other’s company in the faith. I don’t want to go as fars saying they were superficial but....

The dilemma today is that the role models for us asvangelical pastors are the superstar pastors. Read any periodicaleared to church leadership it reeks with overtones of bigness isood. Evangelical megachurches have sprung up around theountry, concerns have grown over whether superstar pastor helpr hurt faith communities. Many Godly pastors have come toealize that they are not talented in administration so they haveone out and hired administrators to guide in the daily managementf church affairs. In many situations, this is good thinking, but, the

Spirit does not lead some of these staff members as much as doeshe envisioning of the church in terms of buildings, diversity ofastors, terrific ministries and marketing of a post-modern faith.

New paradigms, spiritual formation, community outreach/missions,eadership development, and cultural impact/transformation takehe place of people touching people – “authentic” relationships.

This is all done “in appropriately ministering" to the currentongregation while also attracting new seekers into your midst.

The Christianity Today Editorial goes on to say, “The pressureo isolate ourselves is longstanding in our increasingly fragmentedociety based on the radical autonomy of the individual. Perhapshe same thing that is sabotaging marriage is underminingriendship: our increasing unwillingness to commit to relationships

hat require sacrifice, mutual accountability, and a generous sharef humility. That refusal is often not so much willful as fearful.Back in the ‘60s, cultural critics Simon and Garfunkel noted theemptation to what is now innocuously called cocooning: “I’ve built

walls, a fortress deep and mighty, that none may penetrate. I haveo need of friendship; friendship causes pain. It’s laughter and it’s

oving I disdain.”Betsy Hart in her syndicated column, Resolving to combat

solation, asked this question. “As we see the relationshipsoundational to our society falling apart, is that translating into a fearf other kinds of friendship because they, too, might end? Maybe”

Jerry Seinfeld in the TV shows “Seinfeld” would say excuseme has this conversation gotten off the subject. Then he wouldome to the consensus that yes, it had and so he would reply let uset to the subject that matters “me.”

As a society with renewed attention on self, we are isoourselves, building wall, and yet craving relationships. When talk about is self-centered, it is very hard to find close friendsout manipulating them into being such.

What I fear the most is to commit, sacrifice, and serve wpossibility of loving and not receiving love. Therefore, I oloneliness as I yearn for friends – good friends. What whappen if we would reach out to someone in need and serveperson as Jesus did? Do you think that through the abugrace of God, He could use that relationship to the beneboth?

The scriptures tell us to be friends to the sinner. In JoJesus said, “You are my friend, if you do the things whcommand you. No longer do I call you a servant, for a mdoesn’t confide in his servants. Greater love hath no man thathat man lay down His life for His friends. His is that – He isthat purges the soul and then leaves a fire deep in you thanever go out.”

With this fire in you, He requires nothing on your part freceives you as you are for better or for worse. When He dwyou (in that fire), you feel as a prisoner feels who has declared innocent, vindicated. Your do not have be on your gHe does not force Himself on to you, but on the other handcan’t keep from being and acting in the way He has called you – one of His servants.

You can communicate to Him whatever you think, so loyou are sincere, honest with Him, and eventually willing to do ahas instructed. The Father understands those contradictioyour soul and spirit that lead you to desperation. You, O Lora God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering and abuin mercy and truth (Psalm 86:15). With Him, you can breathe and receive freshness like the fragrance after a rain. You can with him, confide in Him, believe in Him, laugh with Him, an

with Him about ordinary stuff.Through it all, He is there, in heaven, in the earth

underneath, He sees, knows and love you. Jesus Christ, wfriend, the only one to whom you dare commit your life as a Sand Lord thereby responding like wise to the unchurched, unand sinners.
