CUBBY FIRE As many parents and community members would already know a fire at the weekend has severely damaged our Cubby area. The Cubbies are used by the Wellbeing Team to support our students at times of need. We are obviously frustrated and saddened by this incident but I want to assure all of the Newcomb Secondary College community that classroom programs are running as normal and the Wellbeing Team will be back in action undertaking their terrific support of our students, as soon as spaces can be organised for them. NAPLAN In 2008, the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) commenced in Australian schools. Every year, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are assessed on the same days using national tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy. All students in Year 7 and 9 will be participating in the NAPLAN testing this week. NAPLAN testing this year will be held on Tuesday 14 th May, Wednesday 15 th May and Thursday 16 th May. All Students are to have calculators for the Maths test and Parents should ask their student if they have one and if not could they please buy one ASAP. We will issue your child’s NAPLAN report later in the year. The same report format is used for every student in Australia. NAPLAN tests are not pass/fail tests. At the classroom level it is one of a number of important tools used by teachers to measure student progress. Whilst teachers are continually monitoring the progress of students, the NAPLAN results provide important milestones to ensure that we are making the progress that we want. Our teaching program through the year is focused on improving student performance, but our Literacy and Numeracy teacher teams have also been doing some work in class over recent weeks making sure our students are well prepared to do their best in the NAPLAN College Council: Student Leaders: Student Leaders: President: Vidas Kymantas Joshua Walker Erik Kvietelaitis Vice President: Jenny Speed Emily Belyea Rose Doole Exec. INDONESIAN EXCURSION

On Tuesday, 7th May 2013, the Indonesian teachers organised an excursion to Melbourne for the Year

9 Indonesian class and the exchange students from our sister school in Lombok.

Despite some early logistical hiccups, everyone managed to get on the train up to North Melbourne. We

visited University of Melbourne and given a guided tour of the campus.

The highlight of the day was a toss between the Indonesian lunch and Queen Victoria Market.

In the end, everyone enjoyed the food at Garage Café which is run by an Indonesian chef. Here are

some of the comments from the students on how great the Indonesian food.

“The Indonesian restaurant was interesting” – Hayley

“The makanan baik!” – Michaela

“It was a good day especially the food!” – Ryan

“Saya suka makanan Indonesia.” – Chloe

“Makanan lezat!” – Sharni

LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF !

As Marcel Proust, a late 19th century novelist wrote: “the real voyage of discovery consists not in

seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes”. Volunteer to host an international high school student in July 2013 through Southern Cross Cultural Exchange and prepare to be amazed at the way this unique and rewarding opportunity helps your family to become closer, to understand themselves better and to see the world in a new light. Carefully selected students will arrive in July for one term, one or two semesters from France, Italy, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Spain. They will attend a local secondary school, arrive with their own spending money and comprehensive insurance cover – all arranged by Southern Cross Cultural Exchange. Visit us at our website www.scce.com.au, email [email protected] or call us toll free on 1800 500 501, request our international student profiles, and capture the spirit of family and friendship.
