Views and Reviews

What an amazing month this has been and who knows where to start.

The Regional Singles and Shooting competition, the first Round Robin, Pennant Doubles, Three Shires

Triples, Junior Regional selection, and so on.

However, there are two players in our region that should get a special “well done” for their achievements.

They are Ross Jones for winning the singles and doubles EPA titles over the bank holiday, and Sheila Roden

for becoming Mayor of Luton.

Juniors at the Regional Singles Competition

Three of our juniors entered this competition, a

brave act in itself. As we all know singles is a game

where you can’t hide, you’re responsible for every

boule thrown. A game many senior players avoid

(myself included), however Kieran Ansell, Ollie

Zimmerman & Sean Daisley turned up ready for bat-

tle. And battle they did.

Kieran had a league of death in the morning being

drawn with Adrian Emson, Jeremy Huntley & Sam

Blakey. He played well against tough opposition and

won one of his games 13-7. Sean also won one

morning game. In his league were Andy

Stratford, Ross Jones and Gordon Ansell.

Ollie had an outstanding morning, drawn in a league

against Derek Northend, Myra Huntley & Martin

Wallace. He won two of his games and

narrowly lost his third 12-13, placing him first in his

league. Ollie played with confidence and maturity

and fully deserved to be top of his league.

All three of the juniors played very well in the

morning putting in good confident performances.

Then came the knockout. Sadly Ollie’s winning

streak came to an end when he met Gareth

Thomas in the first round of the main competition.

Gareth’s experience and consistent pointing made

him a formidable but gracious opponent, Ollie fought

hard and made a good come back but it was not

quite enough.

The final score was Gareth 13 Ollie 9.

Sean battled well in the plate winning his first round,

and then in the next round he too faced a player

with years of experience. Sean played some stun-

ning boule and pulled out some very effective shots

once again experienced prevailed with Keir Gale

knocking Sean out of the plate in the second round.

Sean stayed positive throughout the game and done

very well against Keir who was a true sportsman

throughout. Kieran had started to find his rhythm in

the knock out stage, He had two

convincing wins, he showed great determination

which helped to put him in the semi-final of the

plate. The long day was taking its toll a little at this

point but Kieran put in a great effort against

Amanda Morgenstern. It was a great game and

Kieran kept his pointing very tight making Amanda

work very hard. Amanda showed great respect to

Kieran in their game she was a deserved winner. So

Kieran’s great run ended with the semi-final.

All three juniors played a difficult competition very

well; they gave all of their opponent’s good

competitive games. They all show great promise,

give them a little bit more experience and they really

will be upsetting the applecart.

Inter Regional Qualification May 19th 2013

A great start to our qualification tournament at the

Plough P.C. on Sunday

The first round of matches saw 22 teams battling

out for the 8 Championship and 4 Challenge slots for

the finals at Hayling Island in September.

As usual there was fierce competition and many

close matches but all played in the usual spirit.

At the end of day one the usual suspects are there

or thereabouts but perhaps the surprise packet so

far is the Luton Cons with 4 wins out of 5 – well

done boys for showing that this is not just a young

mans sport!!

At the other end of the scale the juniors showed

great spirit, skill and tactical ability which will make

them difficult to beat in September.

Thanks to the Plough for making it a great day out,

and for a change, good weather.

Chiltern Junior Team –

Inter Regional Qualification

Team; Vikki Amphlett, Ollie Zimmerman,

Sean Daisley, Kieran Ansell

The team had not previously played together so the

first regional qualifier was a big learning curve. The

team used the day to work on tactics and a variety

of different shots as well as playing in different

positions. Vikki was a great team captain and

confidently and efficiently dealt with the opposition

and putting in the teams scores. Ollie proved to be

“the brains” of the outfit on the day providing strong

and confident tactical input. Sean was the steadying

influence in the team, keeping a level head and

providing a healthy balance. Kieran the team “Joker”

injected a positive light heart attitude into the team.

The team as a whole was very supportive and

encouraging of each other.

The team had its ups and downs during the day

which was good because it showed us what areas

we need to work on. I set a points target for each

game this target depended on the opposition, they

hit this target on all but two of the games. All the

juniors show great promise we have already had our

first team coaching session refining their techniques

and broadening their range of shots. The

teams first day playing together proved to be a great

success in many ways. By the end of the day they

learnt how to work together as a team, they learnt

alternative

tactics, how to get the best from their teammates.

They learnt also learnt a lot about their own game.

The whole team was very responsive and worked

very hard, I was extremely pleased with them and I

am confident that by the time they travel to Hayling

Island they will be a strong and effective junior

team.

Their desire to do well is in true Chiltern spirit.

The EPA Titles Weekend 25th to 27th May

The cream of England’s petanque talent

descended on Sandown & Shanklin Isle of Wight.

The event has been held at the home of the

Hurricanes for the last 5 years and has been most

popular with players, who enjoy the holiday

atmosphere.

As a result almost 80 players for the singles, 63 pair

for the doubles, and a further 54 pair for the mixed

doubles turned up.

This year a new format was used with players

battling it out in the morning to determine which

knock-out competition they would reach in the

afternoon.

Top players made the overall championship, with

other players qualifying for the silver, bronze or

plate competition.

Chiltern player Ross Jones dominated, with Ross

winning the singles, then joining Dean Seville to win

the doubles. Unfortunately he was knocked out in

the semi-finals of the mixed doubles, but what an

achievement.

Singles Comp 12th May

The list of players was not looking promising at first,

particularly as the Pennant Doubles was scheduled

for the day before and some people did not want to

play 2 days in a row. However an influx of late

entries come in during the week before deadline and

a dream number of 32 players was reached.

I would like to thank all those of you who are

assisting me in my role as competition secretary by

paying online or in advance. It makes a huge

difference to me not having to deal with money on

the day or being responsible for large amounts of

cash lying around whilst I am playing.

The day was run in 8 groups of 4 players with the

top two players going into the main and the

remainder in the plate for the afternoon knockouts.

All pistes were randomly allocated throughout the

day as the draw was made. The car park proved to

be a challenge.

The atmosphere was surreal, compared to a double

or triples competition. You could almost hear the

players think! Still, there was the usual banter in

between games.

Shooting Competition 12th May

Thanks to all those that took part in what seemed a

very long shooting Competition qualifier.

28 players took part including juniors Sean, Kieran

and Ollie who did their best but fell short on this

occasion, I am sure we will see their names

featuring on the leader board very soon.

We had three scores of “nil points” but everyone

else managed at least one hit!

Congratulations to the following who finished with

the top eight scores and will now go forward to the

knockout finals.

1. Matthew Eversden 33

2. Ben Gallimore 28

3. Steve Zimmerman 27

4. Emma Coggins 26

5. Adrian Emson 22

6. Gordon Ansell 20

7. Steve Carter 20

8. Phil Winston 17

3 juniors played and did themselves proud, claiming

some worthy scalps.

Jet lagged Amanda struggled in the morning, but

pulled herself together in the plate knockout, and

eventually winning against Keir, in the final.

A couple of big names did not make the main as

expected.

Matt carried on his supremacy from the morning to

reach the final, giving helpful hints to his opponents

after the game.

Sam played in a "group of death" in the morning,

making it into second place.

His confidence grew in the afternoon, and reached

the final against Matt. Matt went into an assailable

lead. It proved too strong for Sam's brief control of

the game.

A special thanks to Ickleford's Iain and Ann for

organising the venue and the impromptu extra

scoreboards.

Paolo

Competition Secretary

The date and venue for the knockout is yet to be

decided but the quarter final draw is:

Matthew Eversden Vs Phil Winston

Ben Gallimore Vs Steve Carter

Steve Zimmerman Vs Gordon Ansell

Emma Coggins Vs Adrian Emson

PMPL Doubles Saturday May 11th

The weather did exactly “what it said on the tin”;

cool and sunny in the morning and wet, cold and

windy throughout the afternoon with the occasional

sunny interlude.

The 17 pre-entered teams were supplemented at the

very last minute by Ross & Sam (who had left the

arrangements to “each other” with the obvious

consequences) that made my life much easier.

After a 3 round snake in which only 3 teams were

undefeated we separated the teams into main, plate

and as promised if we got a good turnout, a bronze

competition.

The top 8 teams then played a seeded knockout and

for the first time for a long while Matt & Miles

(prophetically named by Denise the “No Hopers”)

lost in the QFs to an up and coming team of Paolo &

Dan (not that Dan but a new player on the circuit) –

“Petanque R Us”.

The surprise package in the main was Bird “B” – Neil

& Bev who had a stormingly good day being

knocked out in the SFs by “Here Comes the

Boom” (some obscure film title I’m told) – Jeremy &

Ben.

The final was between “Here Comes the Boom” &

“Bucks Head” the latter winning 13-8 – well done

Rob & Jack who only lost 1 game all day and that

was to 12.

The next 6 teams went in to the plate and this was

decided by a 3 round snake because in my

experience those teams at this level prefer to play as

many games as possible rather than face an early

knockout. At the end of play “Planet Rock” – Martin

and Tony R were the top team, winning all 3 games

followed by “Outcasts” – Nicola & Gavin (Proctor);

well done to both teams but particular the latter,

who as far as I can ascertain have not won a

competition together.

The bronze was contested by the 4 teams that

brought up the rear of the tournament and the

News & Views June 2013

winners were “High Hopes” – modesty prevents me

from revealing the names of the team but suffice to

say these two Pink Floyd fans have, at last,

managed to win something under a PF name. The

runners up were “Sandy Saints” – a new

combination of Gordon & Antony.

Well done and thank you to everyone that turned up

to play and apart from 1 team that quit after

ensuring that their decision would not affect any

results, seeing it through on a very cold and wet

afternoon.

The quality of teams that played, the manner in

which the games were played and the quality of

petanque played was first class.

Also, a big thank you to Iain & Ann from Ickleford

PC for sorting out the pistes etc. and to the club for

providing food and drinks throughout the day.

If we get the same number of teams for the triples

on 14th July we will, as promised at the Captains’

meeting, again introduce a bronze level so that we

all have more to play for.

Finally, although we had a very good turnout, it

saddens me to say that there were still 10 teams

that did not have a single player there on the day –

if anyone can tell me what to do to encourage more

players to turn out please contact me.

Three Shire Doubles 2nd June 2013 The Three Shires Doubles competition was held at The Musgrave Arms at Shillington on Sunday 2nd June 2013. It was a lovely sunny day in a lovely setting. We had 29 teams entered this year which is a league record and very encouraging. I hope the Triples in July will be as successful. The morning rounds consisted of a three round snake and then a break for lunch and we decided this year to run a Gold, Silver & Bronze KO in the afternoon. The top 16 teams went into the Gold. The next 8 into the Silver and the remaining 5 into the Bronze Competitions. All three disciplines were seeded with just one play off in the Bronze. The play off was between Ross Jones & Vince Wills (Engine B & Station) v Nicola Proctor & Pete Dibble (Station) with Ross and Vince running out winners at 13-7 These teams then progressed through to the next round semis with Ross & Vince v Rachel Shaw & Dave Blakey (Engine A & Plume) Ross & Vince being the winners of that one and the second semi between John Allright & Sue Infantino (Plough/Phoenix) v Trevor Poole & Barry (Bell Sandy) which was won by John & Sue. On to the final between Ross & Vince v John & Sue with Ross & Vince winning 13-7. Meanwhile in the Silver competition the eight teams progressed through the quarter finals to the Semis with Derek Northend & Simon Doble (Eng B/Hen and Chicks) beating Peter Wright & Neil Ansell (Rising Sun). The second semi Neil Stevenson & Bev Fordham (Rising Sun) beat Gordon Ansell & Andy Goodship Bell Sandy/ Bucks) These games were very nip and tuck with the winners going onto the final which was Derek & Simon v Neil & Bev with Neil & Bev becoming the winners 13-4. Finally, the Gold Competition. I left just before the end and haven’t got the paperwork for this competition save that Jeremy Huntley & Miles Gooda had a very close fought match with Fred Jones & Dave Smith which they eventually won 13-11 Final Result Gold Winners........Jeremy Huntley & Miles Gooda (Engine Z/Outlaws)........13-11 Gold Runners up.......................Fred Jones & Dave Smith (Station Sleepers)..................11-13 Silver Winners...........................Neil Stevenson & Bev Fordham (Rising Sun)..................13-4 Silver Runners Up.....................Derek Northend & Simon Doble (Eng B/Hen & Chicks)...4-13 Bronze Winners........................Ross Jones & Vince Wills (Engine B/Station)..................13-7 Bronze Runners up..................John Allright & Sue Infantino (Plough/Phoenix)................7-13 My sincere thanks to Lucy & the staff at the Musgrave Arms for staging this event, and for the tea, coffee and bacon rolls in the morning and the pasta bake at lunchtime. Thanks to Rosina once again for her assistance and to Paolo Infantino for his invaluable help and finally thanks to you the members for turning up and playing and making it a very enjoyable day. I can honestly say that it ranks as one of the most enjoyable competitions that I have ever run. John Deaville Competition Secretary

Eastern Region Air Ambulance Charity Mixed Doubles Event. 27th May

Two teams from Chiltern, Paolo & Sue and Rich & Elaine, travelled to British Sugar, on Bank Holiday

Monday to take part in the Eastern Region Air Ambulance Charity Mixed Doubles Event.

The day started well for Rich and Elaine, inflicting a "fanny" in their first game.

It was unfortunate that having travelled so far to play new opposition the second game was a Chiltern

affair. Paolo & Sue after a shaky start of giving away 5 points in one end came back to win. Rich and

Elaine went on to win two more games but with one more loss they missed out on the finals. Paolo and

Sue having won the first 4 games run out of steam and lost the 5th game therefore narrowly missing out on

the top 2 places play off. However, they made the 3rd and 4th place play off taking on the team that Rich

and Elaine had convincing beat at the start of the day. It was a close match but Paolo and Sue went on to

finish 3rd and were presented with a medal each.

Thanks to the sponsorship and organization by Pen Y Coed, a total of £460 was raised.

Chiltern Mayor 29th May

This week has been absolutely superb. Tonight I had

the honour of seeing one of our members being

invested as Mayor of Luton. Not only that but she

expressed her love of boule in her acceptance

speech. She did look a little surprised when a

darkside boule was produced in the Mayor's Parlour,

but it just had to be done. Congratulations Sheila

Roden and Mayor's Consort Alan Roden.
