With an In/Out referendum on Britain’smembership of the European Union nowset for 23 June, the Lib Dems are theonly party united in fighting to keepBritain firmly at the heart of Europe.

Tim said: “Britain is better in Europe, andEurope is better with Britain in it.

“Yes, the EU’s not perfect, but if UKIP andthe many right-wing Conservatives succeedin pulling us out it’ll be harder to tackleclimate change, fight terrorism or become amore prosperous nation.”

Two huge votes are coming up forlocal residents in the coming months, and both could have a major impacton life here in Cambridge.

Thursday 5 May sees City Councilelections where it’s expected thatresidents will retaliate against a Labouradministration that’s been accused oflosing touch with ordinary people.

Their recent decision to invest £7 millionin a B&Q in Suffolk instead of pouringmoney into much-needed affordablehousing here in Cambridge was met withwidespread anger and disbelief.

They face a strong challenge from thelocal Lib Dems, who’ve impressedpeople with their priorities to plant 5000new trees, reduce congestion and savestreet lights the green way via LED bulbs.

Then, on Thursday 23 June, the Europereferendum will decide whether Britainremains in the EU, or pulls out and goesit alone.

With so many local jobs here linked tothe EU, as well as millions of pounds ofscience funding, the outcome will matterhugely to Cambridge and its residents.

Tight two-horse race in Newnham

Concern has been raised over ‘gating’,whereby vehicles queue outside the citywhen it is deemed to be full.

Lib Dem transport campaigner NicholaHarrison said: “Gating wouldn’t cutcongestion or air pollution because citydrivers would simply fill the road space.

“I’d be keen to know why they’ve turnedtheir back on the Call for Evidence, whichLib Dems initiated last year.

“This powerfully demonstrated thatoptions such as congestion chargingshould be explored urgently if we want asolution that is effective and fair.”

p Gating would lead to huge queues outsidethe city, which would be disastrous forthe local environment.

Last year, just 184 votes divided the Lib Demsand Labour.

The Greens and Conservatives finished thirdand fourth respectively, failing to get near tothe main two contenders.

Newnham residents face a clear choice: morepositive action and results from Lucy oranother ineffective Labour politician. * Result last time in Newnham, May 2015.
