WELCOME TO THE FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER.In most of your minds Christmas will be a distant memory as you all return to normal life. On behalf of the Town Council I do wish you all a very good year in 2016.
In the two weeks prior to Christmas life was quite hectic. I attended the Christmas Reception of the Chairman of Kesgrave Town Council, the Community Carols here in the town, the Civic Service in Beccles and the Carol Service organised by Lowestoft Town Council and Waveney District Council in Lowestoft. I also chaired the meeting at the Internet Café to discuss the future of that establishment. In the week prior to Christmas I opened the St Elizabeth Hospice shop on the High Street, had coffee and delicious sausage rolls with the residents of Hurstlea Court and had lunch with the residents of Uvedale Hall. I also had the dubious honour of choosing the best decorated business and residence in the High Street, the best residence outside the High Street and the best decorated Residential Home. After much soul searching I decided to give the business award to Effies and the High Street residence to Matt and
Zoe at Burnley House. The house in the rest of the town went to 13 Station Yard and Uvedale Hall won the candelabra in the Residential Home category. I had an evening of carol singing around the town’s hostelries on Friday 18th December and this resulted in £160.60 being collected for my charities. I am grateful to those of my fellow councillors and my friends who joined me. I was delighted that so many people attended the public meeting at the Internet Café. This did prove how much the Café is valued in the town. There were several offers of practical help and the Town Council will assist in every way possible to secure the Café’s viability.
Thank you to the 127 people who entered our Christmas Quiz. When we opened the envelopes on 21st December the first all correct entry came from: Mary Cadman, Primrose Way and the second came from Alison Russell, Pinecroft Way. I did open all the entries so that personal details could be disposed of securely and I was very touched by the kind comments on some of the entries. There were also some artistic editing

ASHBURNHAM OVER 60’S CLUB
New members always welcome! We meet at the Needham Market Community centre,2:30-4PM on Thursdays. There is a community bus to pick people up and take them home again for all our meetings and outings(small charge for this).5th November. Alex Knupsner came to us again with his electric piano, and sang and played for us. This was a very enjoyable mixed collection of songs, followed by the raffle and tea.12th November – Oakhouse Food Demonstration. The ladies came along and cooked two or three dishes which were sampled by members. They told us about the delivery, putting the meals into the deep freeze, and microwaving the meals, and how convenient it is. Oakhouse Foods are a local company based at Eye in Suffolk.19th November – Shingle Street Folk Trio. A lady singer, Chris and two male guitarists, Steven & Bill, who also sang. The trio sang us a variety of songs, some that they had written themselves. One song was about a shipwreck between Felixstowe and Aldeburgh. The trio also belong to a couple of choirs.26th November, our last meeting this month, was a bring
and buy sale. These help to fund our outings and Christmas lunch. We followed this with tea and card bingo.4th December – The community bus picked up members and dropped them at the coach starting point. We left on the coach at 10:30AM to go to the Wyevale Garden Centre at Woodbridge, where we all had a previously booked lunch, which was all very nice. After lunch we looked around the various shops and the Garden Centre itself. We left at 3:30PM to go home.10th December – This was our Christmas Lunch. There were 48 of us. We were joined by the Mayor and Frank and also by Linda Scoles. Linda gave us a talk after dinner about “Christmas”. The mayor won one of the raffle prizes. A good time was had by all. Our organiser Marg was unfortunately ill, and was missed with the organising of the lunch. We finished with a cup of tea and a slice of Christmas cake made by Pat, one of our members.17th December – We were entertained by the Senior Co-op Choir, who sang carols and other songs to entertain us.
A Happy New Year to everyone. Submitted by Kate – Tel. 01449 720628.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTESorry I’ve missed the last couple of months – technology and I don’t really get on – however
we all enjoyed our talk about the treasures of East Anglia by Mark Mitchels in October and our annual meeting in November went well. The members organised our Christmas meeting when we had an interesting local speaker – Eric Morton from Morvend – and delicious refreshments. At the time of writing we are looking forward to welcoming Jo and Frank Lea who will be sharing their travels to see the eclipse and the northern lights with us in January. Our February talk is on The Art of Fine Woodcarving and at the end of the month on the 29th we have our birthday party. On behalf of the members of the W.I. may I wish you all a belated very Happy and Healthy New Year. Visitors are always welcome to come to our meetings which are held on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7.30pm at the Community Centre. Come along and give us a try – we would love to see you.

MINI MUSIC MAKERS2015 was a busy year at Mini Music Makers. We had fun learning songs about animals, colours, shapes and numbers. The children enjoyed playing our many instruments and had a go at making their own rainmakers and coat hanger shakers! We used our rhythm sticks, bean bags, chime bars and our parachute is always a treat! In March we raised £55 for Sports Relief with a cake bake and musical assault course, thank you to all the parents for donating cakes. In the Summer we enjoyed our annual teddy bears picnic and lots of children earned MMM certificates, well done to them it is wonderful to watch their confidence grow and we send our best wishes to all those who have moved onto ‘big school’.During the autumn term we learned about road safety and all the children received reflective arm bands, we also raided money for Children in Need. To round off the year we celebrated with a Christmas party, songs and gifts. If you would like to join us, meet some new people and spend some quality time with your name to the waiting list.
STOWMARKET AND DISTRICT CAMERA CLUBThe last meeting in 2015 was a talk given by Jane Goodall ARPS, called ‘The Beautiful Light’. Jane gave a wonderful talk and showed us many of her fantastic landscape photographs. She gave us a lot of practical tips about shooting
landscapes. She also gave tips to ensure personal comfort when going out to shoot them – eat before you go, take snacks and don’t get hungry, take a warn hat, take wellingtons, take a small torch if going out at night. She maintained that if you are not hungry, cold or wet then you can concentrate on your photography. Words of wisdom, indeed.
Next meetings:
Jan. 11 - Open Competition (3): Judge Peter Espley
Jan. 25 - Tripod Competition against Wymondham and Framlingham: Judge Brian Carlick LRPS
Feb. 8 – Ray Giffin Tankard for Wildlife: Judge Phil Chatfield
Feb. 22 –Talk ‘Speed and Action’: Speaker Roger Hance FRPS AFIAP BPE5*
Mar. 14 - Open Competition (4): Judge Dennis Lumkin LRPS
New members are always very welcome at the club. All you need is a camera – any camera and a real interest in using it. Our members use DSLRs, mirrorless, compacts and bridge cameras.
Regular meetings are held at Stowmarket Community Centre, Hillside, Stowmarket, IP14 2BD, usually on the 2nd & 4th Monday of the month between September & June. We start arriving at around 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start. We’d love to see you there, so why not join us?

December 30th saw a somewhat sad farewell to the children who had been with us in December for our first ever Christmas group visit of first time travellers. I am delighted to report that this was a great success. I would like to extend my thanks to the host Families for their generosity and selflessness in reaching out to these children despite their own family commitments. Also a very big thank you to their children who so unselfishly let complete strangers share their family time at Christmas.
During the visit many new experiences were enjoyed and again we have been touched by the generosity of our sponsors. What was quite amazing to see was how the group were so dedicated in making their memory books, recording minute details and saving scraps for mementos that we would discard without a second thought. The children who my husband & I hosted would spend long hours into the evening working on their memory books rather than watching TV. The children also liked to play traditional board games and spending quality time with their Host families meant so much to them, this is something
they do miss out on a lot at home. Even the smallest of gifts became a treasured item to take home, wrapping paper, cards and bows all being carefully saved as well. A link to a short video showing the activities that took place during the month can be seen on our website.
We heard that everyone arrived home safely in time to celebrate the New Year with their families, this is a very important celebration for the people in Belarus. However they did get a bit of a shock returning to temperatures as low as minus 22 degrees after having spent the previous 4 weeks in our mild weather. Unless the temperature reaches minus 25 they will still return to school as usual with many of them walking both to and from school on their own and in the dark. All of the families of the children sent their thanks to our Host families and there were comments on how children had returned home more confident and enthusiastic after their visit and with a more positive outlook for the future.
We now look forward to the 2016 group visit which takes place in July. We do hope that you will be able to support our forthcoming Fund
Chernobyl Childrens LifelineRaising events to make sure this can take place. Last month I mentioned our Pig Racing evening on 13th February and am pleased to report that CHOCOLATE BINGO returns on Saturday March 5th, many people said they missed our not having the November event so get your tickets as soon as possible as this is sure to be a big nite as always. For those of you who are not familiar with this event
it is a great family night out, see our advert for full details. Tickets are now on sale.
Our very grateful thanks as always to our supporters and here’s looking forward to a great 2016

Care and Support GroupsFEBRUARY IS NATIONAL HEART MONTH Here are a few tips from the British Heart Foundation for keeping a healthy heart.
1. Cut down on your salt intake! Too much salt can cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease. Avoid foods like crisps, salted nuts, canned and packet soups and sauces, baked beans, and ready meals. 2. Watch your diet. A healthy diet can help to reduce the risk of developing heart disease and can also help increase the chances of survival after a heart attack. 3. Get Active! The heart is a muscle and it needs exercise to keep fit so that it can pump blood efficiently around your body with each heartbeat. 4. Manage your weight. The number of people who are overweight in Britain is rising fast. Carrying a lot of extra weight as fat can greatly affect your health and increases the risk of life-threatening conditions such as coronary heart disease and diabetes. If you are overweight or obese start by making small, but healthy changes to what you eat and try to become more active.
5. Get your blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked by your GP. People with high blood pressure run a higher risk of having a stroke or a heart attack. High levels of cholesterol in the blood - produced by the liver from saturated fats - can lead to fatty deposits in your coronary arteries that increase your risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and diseases that affect the circulation. You can help lower your cholesterol level by exercising and eating high-fibre foods such as porridge, beans, pulses, lentils, nuts, fruits and vegetables. 6. Check your family history. If a close relative is at risk of developing coronary heart disease from smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lack of physical activity, obesity and diabetes, then you could be at risk too. 7. Make sure you can recognise the early signs of coronary heart disease. Tightness or discomfort in the chest, neck, arm or stomach which comes on when you exert yourself but goes away with rest may be the first sign of angina, which can lead to a heart attack if left untreated.Claire Bewley is a Director at My Care at Home based in Stowmarket Tel: 01449 763086 www.mycare-athome.co.uk
STOWMARKET & DISTRICT FOODBANKThe start of a New Year seems a good time to thank you all for your continued support of the Foodbank. Although the Foodbank is based in Stowmarket it does look after people throughout Mid Suffolk and many in Needham Market. During the year we took on the lease of a room for our sole use. This has eased our storage problems and provided a workroom for the team. Hampers were delivered at Christmas as before and we received lots of gifts of festive food and children’s toys. The local supermarkets continue to support us with trollies out for customers to put in their gifts. I have been asked why Tesco does not offer this service so perhaps an explanation is in order. Tesco nationally supports the Foodbanks run by the Trussell Trust, a national charity which runs Foodbanks throughout the country. Our local Foodbank is not part of this network. Our own Tesco in Stowmarket, whilst carrying out the Trussell Trust collections, also supports our own Foodbank. Last year our pie chart showing supermarket support indicated that 76% of that support came from Tesco. Whilst the food received from the other supermarkets is mostly donated by their customers, the
donations from Tesco are from the store itself. We are grateful to Andrew, the Manager, and his Community Support Team for their support. Please carry on supporting our Foodbank. I can assure you that it is very well regulated and only assists those in genuine need.

Needham Market Town Council NewsNeedham Market Institute and ClubFollowing extensive enquiries, which have produced no positive outcome, it has been decided there is no prospect of the Institute reopening and therefore the Institute building will be marketed for sale. Whilst this is hugely disappointing, there is compensation in that funds raised from the sale of the premises will become available for supporting other organisations in the town that have the same social and recreational aims the Institute was established for.
Needham Market Internet CaféThe public meeting held at the café before Christmas attracted over a 100 people. The meeting was held to discuss the café’s future, in view of its current financial difficulties and the poor condition of the building it currently occupies. The meeting produced an encouraging outcome in the number of those present who volunteered to lend a hand to try and keep the current café premises in a useable condition. It was reported the café has made an application for grant support which is yet to be resolved. In addition, potential alternative accommodation was considered. It is hoped the Internet Café will, in time, be accommodated in a new ‘Community Hub’ which
should be incorporated in any redevelopment of the redundant Needham Market Middle School site, but that could take 3 to 5 years to materialise. In the meantime it was accepted the vacant Institute building is unfortunately not suitable but many present at the meeting pointed to the pre-school building situated off The Drift which is Suffolk County Council owned and which has sat empty for some considerable time. The Town Council is enquiring with the County Council as to whether that building could be made available to accommodate the Internet Café on a temporary basis.
Town Council Precept 2016/17The Town Council’s various Sections (Town Property, Highways, Lighting and Footpaths etc.) agreed their budget requirements for 2016/17 towards the end of last year. In trying to address some of the ongoing financial constraints on the Council’s finances, the Sections aggregated final total budget comes to £103,500 for 2016/17, down from £106,000 for 2015/16. Whilst the Town Council will benefit from a small increase in its Council Tax base (as a result of recent new development in the town), Mid Suffolk District Council continues to reduce the funds it is due to pass to the Town Council in compensation
for changes made to the Council Tax scheme. This is despite Central Government’s aim which was to provide compensatory funds which were to be passed on in full by District Councils. Consequently, the Town Council has set a Council Tax precept (Band D) of £65.83, which is a 1.99% increase on the 2015/16 precept. Balancing of the overall finances for 2016/17 will require an amount of £1,891 to be drawn from the Town Council’s reserve funds which is far more sustainable than the £6,300 required in the current financial year.
Ipswich Park and RideTown Councillors were deeply concerned to learn of Suffolk County Council’s proposal to close the remaining two Ipswich Park and Ride facilities. This comes on top of the closure of the Bury Road Park and Ride facility which took place in 2013. The Town Council has written to the County Council questioning the logic behind its decision and suggesting ways in which the Park and Ride schemes could be made more viable. The Ipswich Park and Ride scheme website includes the following statement ‘Ipswich Park and Ride is an easy and environmentally friendly way of reaching the centre of Ipswich. We have 2 car parks based on the edge of town which are easily accessed from the A12 and A14 with staff on hand at each site to help you out. By using park and ride, you will be reducing the amount of traffic in Ipswich town centre making it a more pleasant place to visit.’ The last sentence provides a good indication of what will be an obvious outcome should the remaining Ipswich Park and Ride schemes be closed.
Gipsy Lane Railway CrossingThe Design Panel made up of representatives from Network Rail, the Town Council, Suffolk County Council and local residents continues to investigate the options for the replacement of the current over-rail crossing. An additional potential option (7th) has recently come to light which would entail those wishing to cross the railway at the
Stowmarket end of town taking the pathway to Badley Bridge. The route would then take a newly constructed footpath to an existing culvert under the railway and a further footpath running parallel to the railway back to Gipsy Lane.
The Causeway – Dog FoulingIt is with much frustration and disappointment that this first Newsletter of 2016 has to carry a warning to errant dog owners who are allowing their dogs to foul at the top of The Causeway (near to the entrance to the Primary School) and then do not pick up and dispose of the dog waste (in the bin provided for that purpose at that location). For those who are guilty, you can imagine how disgusting it is for parents and those at the school who have to clean up the resultant mess when a child steps into dog waste. It does not take a lot to prevent this happening. If your dog fouls, in particular where it is clear children use a pathway, for goodness sake pick it up and dispose of it properly. Our Town Warden is monitoring The Causeway. If you are found not picking up after your dog, wherever this takes place in the town, you will be reported to the Police. On 13th January, a Cornish dog owner was ordered to pay a fine and costs of £1880 for failing to clear up after his dog.
Clean for the QueenYou may be aware of this campaign which is aimed at clearing up Britain in time for Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. This will be officially celebrated in June 2016. Over the weekend of 4th, 5th and 6th March, The Mayor will be leading volunteers on activities to neaten the town in conjunction with the campaign. If you would like to join her please let her know by Friday 19th February by emailing [email protected] or by telephone on 01449 721544 or leave your contact details with the Town Clerk (Town Council Office details are shown on page 2).

NEEDHAM MARKET RUSHMERE ST ANDREW
Neighbourhood WatchWe are now well into another New Year and crime wise in 2016 we will have to be even more vigilant if we want to remain safe and secure in our own home.
Fortunately in Needham Market domestic burglary is a rare occurrence but it is still wise to make sure before you retire at night to check that every door and window is securely locked including side gates and garage doors.
We do still have reports of property being stolen but that’s mainly because we are careless. Walking around the town it’s not unusual to find garage doors wide open, cycles laying on front lawns, shopping and jacket left on the back seats of cars just waiting for the opportunist thief to take advantage.
Cyber crime is also on the rise, this is where criminals hack into your computer, referred to as phishing; this is when criminals send bogus emails asking for security information and personal details. Do not be tempted to open attachments or download information that you have not asked for or don’t know where it is coming from.
Scams unfortunately are by far the biggest problem we face today, they come in a variety of ways: by post, telephone calls, email, doorstep callers or courier and
it could affect any one of us. Nearly everybody I speak to nowadays are receiving two or
three calls a week with recorded messages, whatever you do don’t respond by pressing buttons to hear more as this could cost you at a high rate. It is also advisable not to get involved by answering questions for what appears to be a harmless survey; persuasive sales patter can get you interested and before you know it you are giving away vital information such as telling the caller you are elderly, living alone and much more. If the caller is somebody you don’t know or have never heard of just say no thank you and put the phone down. Equally if a stranger knocks at your door make sure you have the chain on before you open it and politely tell the door knocker you are not interested then close and lock the door.
Police Connect will bring you up to date about crime and policing in our area. If you are not a member it is easy to register. If you have a computer register by going online to www.suffolk.police.uk/policeconnect or just simply register by telephone 01473-613997. You can choose to receive the information by email, text or a message on your landline.
By being aware of what is happening around you and by taking the time and trouble to think about security in and around your home, it could save you a great deal of heartache in the future.

Cat’s ProtectionBury St Edmunds and Stowmarket Cats ProtectionThis month we are looking for a home for Jasmine a lovely tabby female aged 4 yrs.
She is very friendly and enjoys fuss and attention but also loves to play particularly chasing games. Jasmine does need to be the only pet as she
does not like other cats or dogs and she would be best suited to an adult home or a home with older children. Jasmine is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
If you would like to know more about Jasmine or any of the cats in our care please ring Marina on 01449674584. More information can found on our website www.cats.org.uk/bury-st-edmunds and our Facebook page. If your cat has not been neutered and your circumstances mean that you need financial help towards the cost please ring Margaret on 01284 851055 and leave a message. Your call will be returned as soon as possible. Our recent Christmas Fayre in Needham Market raised an amazing £1063 despite the terrible storm on the day. Many thanks to those of you who braved the weather and special thanks to everyone who helped
in many different ways. Our table top sale in the Community Centre in December raised over £150.
We have already booked a 2016 Spring Fayre 7th May
11am to 3pm in Wattisfield Village Hall. Tombola prizes and items for sale are always appreciated. Please email [email protected] or ring 01449720003 to arrange collection.

NEEDHAM MARKET GOOD NEIGHBOUR SCHEMEAs Chairman of Needham Market Neighbourhood Watch I am pleased to report that the Good Neighbour Scheme we have been working towards setting up for the residents of Needham Market is now fully operational. With the support of Community Action Suffolk the launch date was on Wednesday 13th January. It has taken 12 months to arrange; firstly we had to obtain a grant to cover costs. We applied to various organisations and after supplying budgets, account details and other information the Suffolk Community Foundation granted us sufficient funds to get started. Following an advert in the Town Newsletter we were able to form a Committee and a questionnaire was sent to every
household in Needham Market via the Newsletter. As a result we now have between 15 & 20 volunteers security checked and ready to respond to any calls for help.A Good Neighbour Scheme is for the benefit of the whole community although it tends to be mainly the elderly that make the most use of it. Volunteers are encouraged to offer their service only for activities that they feel confident of carrying out, such as changing a light bulb, fixing a dripping tap, checking a smoke alarm, moving furniture, hanging a picture or walking a dog for people who are unable to get out temporarily. Befriending on a regular basis or helping with the computer or writing a letter are other things we can help with.Transport to the doctors or a hospital visit could also be available but this is the only service that we would charge for. The recommended price
would be 45 pence per mile to compensate the driver for fuel, wear and tear. After our launch on the 13th January any resident requiring such help would be asked to ring our mobile number 07999576544. This mobile phone will be held by one of the committee
members on a rota basis. Any resident of Needham Market who would like to join our team of volunteers please give me a ring on 01449720122 or just turn up at our launch on the 13th January.
Trevor Gibbons. Scheme Organiser.

EVERYBODY WELCOME AT ALL OUR SERVICES
I always like to report good news regarding the Parish Church and I am pleased to report that our treasurer has been able to send to the Diocese the final instalment of the parish share or Quota and we have been able to pay the full amount requested by the Diocese. This amounted to £51,175.00 which is a huge achievement for our church and it is by far the largest amount we have ever paid. There are several parishes within the Diocese that, due to dwindling members, are unable to meet the requested amount each year so it is a great benefit to the powers that be, that some of the parishes do pay in full. A big thank you to all of you who have supported us in anyway during the year with our fund raising we couldn’t have done it without your contribution. However, another year passes and we begin the cycle all over again and our challenge this year is to raise £54,000.00, so once again we will be looking for your support. As you are aware we are also having to raise money for the repair of the church roof, our Medieval Masterpiece and to date we have raised approximately a third of the £250,000.00 required which is very good in twelve months. Our buildings team continue to work with other fund raising bodies in the hope of getting various grants to help us with this. We will however continue to hold events/functions
to raise monies ourselves. We begin our fund raising in 2016 in February with our Lent Lunches when we raise money for our link Diocese of Kagera Pastors children’s education fund. These will be held every Saturday between 13th February and 19th March from 12noon to 1.30pm in the ARK. Everybody welcome.Obviously this leads up to Easter and all the events that go with it and there will be more about that in the March edition of the Newsletter.A few dates for your new diaries - on Saturday 9th April we welcome Moody and Sankey for an evening of joyful music. This is to be held at 7.30pm in the ARK Admission will be by donation (suggested £5.00) and all proceeds are to the roof fund.On Friday 6th May we welcome back the Jubilee Ladies Choir under the direction of their new conductor Simon Welham. Time for this is 7.30pm and will be held in Church, tickets £7.50 and will be available in April. The Ladies sing a variety of pieces which include songs from the musicals and other well known popular pieces. Proceeds once again to the roof fund.I always feel that perhaps you think that the Parish church is all about raising money and yes we have to to keep this church going for everyone in the parish to use, however the church is not all about the building but
about those who worship there, have a fellowship with each other and a caring about the community which we serve. Several newcomers to Needham Market and beyond have found a welcome at St Johns and have become involved with the life of the church. If you feel you would like to join us for any of our services or events you will be made most welcome and we look forward to meeting you. A list of
services is shown in this magazine or can be found on the church door.If you would like us to pray for you or anyone close to you, you can leave details on our prayer board in the church entrance porch. If you need to arrange a wedding, baptism or funeral please contact Revd Diane Williams on 720316.CFL

HOME WORSHIPWe began the New Year with a very interesting speaker to lead our Home Worship, Faith Spear from the Christian Prison Visitors Fellowship. She told us of the ‘Sycamore Course’ which Prison Visitors organize for the prisoners. This is about ‘restorative justice’, and based on the story of Zacchaeus who was a Jewish Tax Collector for the occupying Romans at the time of Jesus - so not very popular.
Our next Home Worship will be on Monday 1st February, 2016, when Ruth Dennigan, Diocesan Discipleship and Ministry Development Officer will be leading our worship. We always meet on the first Monday of the month, 10 o’clock at 137 High Street, Needham Market, and have tea/coffee/ biscuits and a friendly chat after the worship, all are welcome.
Wendy Marchant.

Church NewsCHRISTCHURCHWhen I went to the supermarket to do my first big shop since before Christmas I couldn’t help but notice that there were shelves of Easter Eggs on sale! I swear they arrive earlier and earlier, and I guess that if I’d looked more closely at the bakery department I would have seen Hot Cross Buns.
There’s a slight excuse for the early arrive of Easter goodies this year as Easter is very early with Easter Sunday being on March 27th.
Because of this the Church Calendar tells us that Shrove Tuesday is on 9th February with Lent starting on Ash Wednesday, the very next day.
I’m sure you all know about Shrove Tuesday – or Pancake Day. Long ago this was a day for feasting and having a good time. People
went to church to confess the bad things they had done and would be ‘shriven’ or forgiven before the start of Lent. As rich foods such as eggs were forbidden during Lent, one way of using them up would be to make pancakes.
Sometimes people give things up for Lent – chocolate, or alcohol are common ‘pleasures’ which some people steer clear of. Maybe you will be doing this, but perhaps as you do you may like to consider giving the money you would have spent to your favourite charity?
Lent is also a time of prayer and preparation for Christians as they look towards the events of Holy Week and Easter Day. If you’d like to find out more I’m sure any of the churches in Needham Market would be happy to see you – I know we would at Christchurch!

CHRISTCHURCH CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 2015On behalf of Christchurch, Needham Market, I would like to thank everyone who supported our 2015 Christmas Tree Festival and helped to make it such a happy and festive community event. Thank you to those who bought a real pine tree and decorated it to reflect our theme ‘A Great Big Welcome’; your imagination, interpretation, and creativity was amazing! Together, you helped Christchurch to raise £1,403.52. This money will be shared between Christchurch and the two charities that we are currently supporting: MISSION AVIATION FELLOWSHIP and PRISON FELLOWSHIP.We couldn’t have done it without the help of all those who gave their time to make and serve seasonal refreshments amongst the trees, and those who came to enjoy the trees and refreshments and gave generous donations. And, very importantly, those who helped to set up and clear away afterwards!Do come and visit our church again – you will be given a Great Big Welcome.Sheila Norris, Festival Co-ordinator

NMBC held it’s AGM on the 20th October. The meeting began sadly with a minutes silence for members who had passed away in the previous twelve months, Ian Goodrum, Terry Coombes, Mabs Harrison, Liz Cudmore and Roger Benthom. This was followed by the election of the clubs officers:President: John Holloway, Chairman: Alistair Bailie, Treasurer: Linda Benthom, Secretary: Pat Hadden, Club Captain: Alistair Bailie, Minutes Secretary: Pat Goodrum. It was an honour for the club that Len Harvey was elected to serve as Stowmarket League president for 2015 and the club ensured that presidents ‘day and all the other events were a great success. It was agreed that the ‘Green’ needed attention so our green team along with outside expertise are spending a great deal of time and effort to bring it back to its best. I am sure their efforts will be rewarded and that all our bowlers will appreciate their efforts when we start to bowl next season. We decided to resign from the Ipswich League and apply to join the Stowmarket League on a Wednesday, our application was successful so from 2016 we will be competing as follows:Monday evenings 2 teams, Tuesday afternoons 2 teams,
Wednesday evenings 1 team and Thursday evenings 1 team all in the Stowmarket League. The clubs individual competitions were well attended with a barbeque for refreshments and the results were, Singles: winner Steve Cain, runner up John Holloway, Pairs: winners Steve Cain and Leonie Whitehead, runners up, Paul Copping and Rita Robertson, Triples: winners Dale Quinton, John Fisher, Alistair Bailie, runners up, Margaret Thorndyke, George Holmes, Mike Suffling.Social events are held each month, November was Carpet Bowling which was a great success, December was a Christmas quiz, games, carols and Christmas fayre which was attended by over 40 people. January was a Beetle Drive with a fish and chip supper and February 26th will be the ‘Big Quiz’ with soup and a roll as refreshments this is open to non members.Coaching sessions will be held on Saturday mornings for new members, exact dates will be published in the April newsletter , please come along and enjoy a cup of tea/coffee and biscuits.Contact names and numbers for NMBC are Pat Hadden 01473 831308 and Alistair Bailie 0144720759.David Hindley.

Hopefully we will have booked our place in the Final the evening before so we can then see who our opponents will be.The football club is always looking for willing volunteers to help out at the club so if you think you would like to become involved in a very friendly, family orientated club and could assist on match days, social events, ground maintenance or in any other possible way please do get in touch with Mark 07795 456502 or [email protected] we would love to hear from you.
