Conor is supporting the Obesity Management Associations MyWeight, My Future campaign after hosting a reception for the charity inParliament. The campaign is urging the public to take control and responsibility fortheir weight and to Know My BMI to reduce pressure on the NHS.BMI (or Body Mass Index) uses height and weight to determine thelevel of body fat and help indicate whether a person is a healthyweight. The charity urges people to know their BMI and the BMI oftheir family members and to check it every three months to monitorchanges.Commenting, Conor said I am delighted to be able to get behind this

campaign. The latest Health Survey for England shows that well over50 per cent of women and 60 per cent of men are overweight orobese, giving us one of the highest rates of obesity in Europe.Apart from costing the NHS over 5 billion each year the toll on

peoples health is huge. I encourage people to really take control oftheir weight and take the opportunity to check their BMI. This will nodoubt be a huge step in relieving pressure on the NHS and increasingso many peoples quality of life.Robert Houtman, Trustee of Obesity Management Association said,We cannot go on letting our National Health Service pick up the

pieces as weight balloons in both children and adults. The My Weight,My Future campaign encourages individuals and families to takeaction now, to find out their BMI and take positive steps to addressobesity.>> Click here to check your BMI using the NHSs healthy weightcalculator

Question time at Bourne Academy for

    Conor Burns MPBournemouth Echo

    Tuesday 5th February 2013

Bournemouth West MP Conor Burns, with Bourne Academystudents and deputy head girl Gracie Prince, back row

third left, who organised his visit.

An MP faced a rather unorthodox question time at the BourneAcademy after being invited to talk to students by the deputy head girl.Conor Burns, MP for Bournemouth West, said it was the first time hehad ever been asked which kitchen utensil he would rather be, amongquestions about national policy. He said he would be a lemon and lime zester because he wasinterested in scraping below the surface to find the truth.

The event on Friday was organised by Gracie Prince, 15, whoapproached the MP while she was seeking community figures to givethe students an insight into the wider world. She said: I am delighted with how the talk went. The idea was to findout more about how everything is run, but it was also an opportunity toshow what we can do here at the academy. It was brilliant that our MP was able to come, we had a lot ofquestions for him about education and what the government is doingto provide jobs for young people, and it brought home just how muchpolitics affects us.

Mr Burns said he was impressed with the political awareness of thestudents. We have covered everything from the European Union, throughThatcher, Catholicism, euthanasia and the war in Afghanistan, I havebeen very impressed, he said.I have been to the academy a few times recently, but it is the first

time I have been invited by a student, or asked what kitchen utensil orsuperhero I would rather be.This is a great opportunity for me as well, both to hear from localyoung people, and show that we politicians arent remote figurespottering around London, we are community figures. The MP said the superhero he would most like to be would beSpiderman.Richard Youngs, the academys business director, stressed thatGracie had organised the meeting with little involvement by theacademy. He said: It is wonderful that Gracie has done this off her own back, allwe have done is provided a room, and she has done a lot of work.

It is a great opportunity for the students, they have asked a varied setof questions, some serious and some more bizarre, but it all gets themthinking and makes their education real.Conor in the papers:
