Some of you have been with Temple Shaarei Shalom
long enough to remember the few Interfaith Thanks-
giving Services we had. As a participant, I can tell
you it was a wonderful opportunity to come together
with members of other faith traditions and share col-
lectively in our belief that faith in God—however we
may choose to recognize God—can be a powerful
force for good in our world. Sadly, for a number of
factors, our Interfaith Program stalled for a long
time.
That being said, over the last several years, as we all
know, our community has grown and changed.
Moreover, as we all know, over the last several
years our world has become more complicated, more
confusing, more uncertain. This is a time when peo-
ple of faith need to come together to help bridge the
gaps that exist. This is a time when people of faith
need to demonstrate that we can have peaceful coex-
istence, even though our fundamental beliefs and
ideas are different from one another.
As our community has grown and changed, and as
our world has become ever more complicated, the
need to meet with other people of faith has become
more important than ever before.
The first event will be on Sunday, April 16th, and is
being billed as A Day of Faith, to bring together the
Jewish and Muslim Communities of Boca Raton/
Delray/Boynton/West Palm Beach. The plan, as it
currently stands, is to gather together in Boynton to
show our strength and resolve that we will not allow
the challenges that face us as Americans and as peo-
ple of faith, divide us.
The second event will be on Sunday, May 21, and is
a service to honor and recognize our first responders:
Police, Fire Rescue, Sheriff’s Department. Each and
every one of us has a debt of gratitude to these brave
men and women who risk their lives every day to
keep our homes and communities safe. This pro-
gram will be held in East Boynton Beach, at St.
Mark’s Catholic Church.
These events give our community a chance to come
together through things that we hold dear. These
events give our community a chance to come together
in communion and to make new connections. These
events give our community a chance to be a beacon of
hope for a trying time.
I hope you will be able to join us at one or all. For
more information, give me a shout.

Each week, Rabbi or I chant a passage from the To-
rah at services, either on Friday night or Saturday
morning. One might think this would get tedious
year after year, but there is no end to the lessons and
insights found in every verse of Torah. One of my
favorite passages comes from the story of the Exo-
dus, which we will be reading soon at Pesach. After
God instructs the Israelites to prepare the Passover
sacrifice and make a feast, painting the lintel of their
doors with the blood of the Paschal lamb so that the
Angel of Death will not smite their first-born sons
with the final plague, we are told, “It was a Night of
Vigils, “Leyl Shimurim” for the Eternal God, for
bringing them out of the land of Egypt; this same
night unto God is a a Night of Vigils for the Chil-
dren of Israel throughout all their genera-
tions.” (Exodus 12:42)
This concept of a Leyl Shimurim, a night in which
God stands by and watches, is powerful and unique,
suggesting both the momentousness of the occasion,
and God’s supreme and eternal protection. That
night, the Destroyer is set loose upon the first born
of every Egyptian household, “From the firstborn of
Pharoah sitting on the throne to the firstborn of the
prisoner in the dungeon,” (Ex. 12: 29) This mass
execution, collective punishment, visited upon
Egypt by the Eternal, is the key to the liberation of
the Israelites and leads to the birth of the Nation.
God declares, “This month shall be unto you the
beginning of months, it shall be the first month of
the year to you,” (Ex. 12:2)
So what is God watching over? To make sure that
no Israelite should fall victim to the utter horror that
is occurring that night in every Egyptian house, for
sure. But the painting of the lintel of the house with
the sacrificial blood already confers such protection,
does it not? So why the vigil? I see it as God being
like an expectant father pacing, unable to rest or sit
just before the birth of his child. The vigil kept by
parents during the final hours of labor, when all
the preparations have been made, the gestation is
complete, and the most dangerous part, the pas-
sage between the waters, out of the narrow spaces
(Hebrew: Mitzrayim, also the word for Egypt) is
what remains.
There is a very special traditional custom that has
men or children keeping watch the night before
the Bris of a baby boy. During that night, prayers
are recited, passages from Torah and Talmud are
studied, and food is shared. This is directly con-
nected to the concept of God’s Leyl Shimurim the
night before the Exodus from Egypt, with a
healthy serving of KeinEyinHorah – No Evil Eye
– thrown in for good measure. This fulfills the
command, “This same night unto God is a Night
of Vigils for the Children of Israel throughout all
their generations.”
If you are interested in studying a passage of To-
rah in Hebrew in depth, with the goal of chanting
on a Shabbat evening or Festival morning in the
coming year, please contact me at
[email protected]. I would love
to teach you to chant or “leyn” Torah, using the
trope and/or a recording for you to listen to and
learn from. The only requirement is that you can
read prayerbook Hebrew and are past Bar/Bat
Mitzvah age.

When I was PTO President, I used to say, there
were 2 types of events – one that would build
community and one that would help raise money
and help us build our future. But all these years
later, I find that I was wrong. Yes, there are fund-
raisers like the TSS Shekels – and make no mis-
take, it is a fundraiser – and events like the 2nd
night Passover Seder on April 11th and the Birth-
day Weekend on May 5th-7th – they build commu-
nity. We won’t make any additional dollars. We
make enough to cover the costs, but what we build
in community is the gift we all receive. But then,
there are events like the Lollapajewza concert – it
was both – building community and building the
future. It was absolutely a fundraiser; but I saw
people dancing, I heard people singing – you only
do those things with friends and family – our com-
munity. And then there are events like the Golf
Tournament on April 23rd. I’m so excited that this
year we have a title sponsor with Marcus and
Levine; but it is still a temple wide fundraiser. In
fact, this is one of our biggest fundraisers of the
year – and you get to be with your community. If
you can’t golf, then you’re like me, don’t worry –
you can join us for lunch. This year, thanks to
Lance Berkowitz and his amazing committee, we
have a silent auction! But if you already have a
commitment that day, I do understand; but you can
be a sponsor or a supporter.
I talked about building the future – what about just
for the building? Many know by now that we
have an issue with the roof. We have all been
there with our own homes, and now it’s this home;
and we need some help through our fundraising
efforts.
I hope you will consider how you can help – build
our community and build our future – because re-
member, it’s this roof…..
that shelters us from every storm.

Grandparents: Joe & Donna Cerniglia Laraine & Everett Fergenson
Siblings: Elijah and Isabel Fergenson
Sports Participation: Swimming, Skiing and Mountain Bik-ing
Academic Interests: Reading and Science
Special Interests: Video Games, Animals
Torah Portion: Tazria/M etzora
B’nei Mitzvah Project: I am holding a fundraising event at my
school that benefits a food bank. This is important because
some people can’t provide for their family. I believe this should
stop. Since we live in an area that produces food for the rest of
the country, I don’t get why people are hungry.
Parents: Marc & Holly Lichtenfeld
Grandparents: Ethel & Nathan Bornstein and Barbara & Ed Lichtenfeld
Siblings: Julian Lichtenfeld
Sports Participation: Travel Soccer on Boynton Knights
Academic Interests: Science, Wor ld History
Special Interests: Oboe
Torah Portion: Tzav
B’nei Mitzvah Project: I regular ly do beach cleanups with the organization Sea Angels. I have seen a lot of plastic on the beaches and I know that many marine animals are strangled in plastic rings. I have written to companies like Costco encourag-ing them to use an invention by a South Florida company of edible plastic rings. I am also encouraging others to write to companies about this invention.
Parents: Benjamin & Lisa Blank
Grandparents: Cheryn Benenfeld
Siblings: Mollie Blank
Sports Participation: Swimming and bowling
Academic Interests: Journalism & Ro-botics
Special Interests: Cooking, movies, theatre
Torah Portion: Shemini
B’nei Mitzvah Project: I have taken up two causes, chil-dren and cancer. Many children who are living in orphanages do not have necessities that are taken for granted like clothes to wear. I collected children’s clothing of all sorts. The clothes were packed up and sent to the Foundation of Humanitarian Aid Network in Cali, Columbia where they are given to the children in the orphanage there. I chose to support an orphan-age in Cali, Columbia because I learned through a family friend that children here were especially in need. Additionally, cancer is such a terrible disease that touches too many. We need to do all we can for a cure. With this in mind, I contributed to the Gift of Life Foundation.

Miles Alter, President
There are times when I find myself becoming a bit reflective.
So it was last night when I started thinking about our temple
auxiliaries and what an integral part they play in both the life
and financial health of our congregation.
Whether it’s our wonderful Sisterhood, our PTO, STARY or
our active and vibrant Brotherhood, these organizations include
hundreds of members on their scrolls and offer programs that
enrich, entertain, inform and inspire our congregants.
With these lofty objectives in mind, TSS Brotherhood has dedi-
cated itself this past year to providing a schedule of speakers
and activities that have made a significant impact, socially,
spiritually and financially, on Temple Shaarei Shalom.
We expanded the size of the Sukkah…donated $3,000 to our
scholarship funds…made an annual contribution of $2,500 to
our operating budget. We were honored to sponsor the Can-
tor’s Concert to the tune of $400…and delighted to also
sponsor our recent Purim carnival.
We cruised the western Caribbean for seven days and are cur-
rently planning our next cruise for this coming December.
Thirty-two intrepid passengers have already booked this fabu-
lous voyage on Celebrity, and there’s room for lots more.
Simply call Sand & C travel at 736-3880, or call Miles Alter for
more information.
We hosted programs by the FBI on homeland security and
scams…presented a fascinating talk by a respected medical
expert on Alzheimer’s and Stroke…learned about the origins of
ISIS and the Middle East crisis…and we were educated on how
to stay active and healthy by a local physical therapist.
On April 20 we’ll be tripping the light fantastic when Brother-
hood presents an evening of ballroom dance lessons by two
professional instructors. It’s fun…and it’s free. On May 18 the
Sheriff’s Department will be here to speak to us about personal
safety tips for seniors. This evening could be a lifesaver and
you don’t want to miss it.
Yes, it’s been a busy year. We’ve accomplished a great deal
and are looking forward to even more wonderful programs. Be
a part of it. If you’re not already a member of Brotherhood,
there’s no time like the present.
Have a happy and healthy Passover…whether you’re staying
home or traveling.

ISRAEL’S 69TH BIRTHDAY.

Tuesday May 2nd 7:00 PM
We are rapidly approaching the TSS Israel
Independence Day (Yom Ha’Atzmaut) celebration
May 2, 2017 between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. at Temple
Shaarei Shalom.
A celebration of Israel would not be complete with-
out food—so we will have a falafel bar, Israeli wine
tasting, Israeli snacks and Israeli desserts. In addi-
tion to food and drink we will have videos about
Israel and its place in history and the future, Israeli
dancing and music and a raffle of two Israeli gift
baskets.
The cost will be only $12.00 for TSS members and
$15.00 for non-members. That price includes the
falafel bar, the Israeli wine tasting, the videos, the
Israeli snacks, the Israeli dessert and one raffle tick-
et each.
Many of you have very close ties to friends and
family in Israel, and have visited Israel, but even if
you have little connection to Israel, we know that by
joining us on May 2, you will have a good time, eat
some great food and gain important information
about Israel and its connection to each of us.

To the Congregation of Temple Shaarei Shalom
Judy and I would like to thank you for the warm
welcome we received when we joined the temple
and for the continuing support and friendship
In the past month, our family lost two wonderful
people in a very short time. Judy’s parents passed
away within a week of each other. We notified
the temple and Rabbi Fratello visited us , con-
soled us and helped us with the funeral arrange-
ments. He delivered a wonderful liturgy and alt-
hough he personally didn’t know Abe and Ethel
he spoke as if he did..
But aside from that we received phone calls and
letters support and sympathy from the congrega-
tion , some people that we didn’t even know..
To the members of the congregation, you have a
very unique family here and Judy and I are very
happy to be part of it.
Shalom
Myron and Judy Santo
