Free Food Friday is back!

Never in our wildest dreams would we ever have considered being quar-antined for months on end, not seeing our friends and families. Now that we are starting to open our restaurants and other businesses, we can see light at the end of our tunnel (Never mind that it might be the light of another oncoming train). Until then, keep up the contact through phones, Zoom, Skype and plain old fashioned letters. My heart grew three sizes when I got the Mother’s Day letter from my 2-year-old granddaughter. Thanks to our Day Sponsors for June

We appreciate our Day Sponsors for June.

June 1 is sponsored by the Warrick Vet Clinic Newburgh Plaza in honor of their 6th Anniversary having a location

in Newburgh. Thank you for sup-porting the NSC and thank you for tak-ing such good care of our dear pets! June 02 is sponsored by Ed and Rose Cooper in honor of their 36th wedding anniversary. What a great month June is for weddings! Thank you, Ed and Rosie, for making us a part of your spe-cial day this year. June 12 is sponsored by Dr. Ed and Nancy Prusz in honor of their 49 wed-ding anniversary. The Pruzses have

been wonderful supporters of the NSC for many years. We are excited to be part of their 49th and are looking forward to celebrating their 50th! Happy Anniversary! June 17 is sponsored by Penny and Tom Bodkin in celebration of their wedding anniversary. Thank you for being such great "Newburghians" and for your support of the NSC and so many other activities in the Town of Newburgh. Happy Anniversary! Cele-brate!

Thanks to Community Foundations, other folks who help us

In these scary economic times, it is such a blessing to have organizations that can help with expenses that are not currently covered by income. We appreciate the Rapid Response Funds grant we received in May from the Warrick-Vanderburgh Community Foundations through the Community Foundation Alliance, Inc. We are getting some assistance through the federal PPP program to help with expenses , as well. Thanks to the individuals who have gone over and above in their support of the Center, including Allyson Clay-bourn, Pam and Warren Wentzel, Su-zan and Arnold Sorensen, the Islamic Center and Ruth Edgerton. Thanks Ed Butch for planting and tak-ing care of our garden. We also appreciate all those who are making masks for the Center to distrib-

ute. Teresa Graham, Chris Campbell, Hazel Carter and the American Legion Auxiliary have all been busy crafting face masks. If you need a mask or two, please come by during business hours and pick some out to take. We’re hearing these masks should be laundered often, so you need more than one. We have a limited supply of breakfast, and emergency food boxes from SWIR-CA. The breakfast boxes have items for five breakfasts, while each emergency box contains supplies for seven lunch-es. All these boxes contain shelf stable foods. The emergency food boxes are designed to hold you over in a pinch until you can either get to the store or have your power restored, etc. Please call the Center at 812-853-5627 to re-serve your box(es). You don’t have to be a member, just over 60 years old to

qualify. First come, first serve. There is SWIRCA paperwork to fill out so they can get their funding. If you’d like to donate for these, that would be great, but it is not required. Also, the Islamic Center is offering food boxes on Fridays, 4-5 p.m. Food pantries at Mother Theresa’s and New-burgh United Methodist Church are open, too. Mother Theresa’s is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9-11:30 a.m. and the last Thursday of the month, 4-5:30 p.m. The church’s pan-try is open Mondays, 9-11 a.m. Both are drive through only. Supplemental food is distributed the fourth Friday at the Center. You must apply ahead of time for this program. Call Colleen Martin at 812-598-8332 to register for this monthly program. This program is limited to Warrick County residents.

Congratulations to Joe Seibert. He submitted a list of 127 words that he made from coronavirus. Good job, Joe. He wins a Walmart gift card. The online Scrabble Dictionary listed 327 words. There were 2 eleven-letter words and 17 two-letter words. The remaining words ranged from three to nine letters. There were no 10-letter words listed.

Not having an “E” to use limited the number of usable words, according to some whiners. Here’s the new contest for June. Make as many words as you can from this phrase: Newburgh— Best Little Town by a Dam Site. You have all the vowels to work with this time. Deadline to enter is June 20.

Contest winner announced; new contest set for June

We’re ramping up for Porkapalooza 2020

Now that we are looking at warmer weather and folks are getting the knack of physical distancing for fun and entertainment, we anticipate getting together with our friends from the Newburgh BBQ Coalition (NBC) for another great smoking adventure here

at Newburgh Senior Center. Mark your calendar now for Friday and Saturday, September 25 and 26. You will not forgive yourself if you for-get. Lunches are scheduled for both days. As usual, pre-ordered smoked meat will be picked up on Saturday. Times will be posted as soon as we know them. If you breathe just right, you can re-member the smell of the smokers in the side yard from years past. Just makes you drool, doesn’t it? Can’t you taste the pulled pork and smoked meats? We plan to offer pulled pork lunches and will be taking orders for tender-loins, ribs and pulled pork. If September is too far away for you to wait, the NBC is scheduled for their first 2020 smoke in Newburgh at the American Legion on June 13. You can

pre-order ribs, tenderloins and/or pulled pork. Thanks to our first sponsor, the folks at Stoll, Keenon and Ogden. Chris Wischer is a member of this law firm and is our Town Attorney. He has played music for us.

VHS, DVDs can be borrowed We discovered a treasure trove of VHS tapes and a few DVDs for your viewing pleasure. You can borrow sev-eral at a time and return them when you finish watching. We also have a plethora of books on tape and CDs in the library. Books are available to borrow, too. Please wear a mask when you enter the building and wash your hands be-fore you handle anything.

Happy Flag Day, June 14. On this day, we commemorate the adoption of the flag by the Second Continental Con-gress in 1777. May she ever wave over our free country and stand for the dedi-cation and courage of all who served to keep our country free. Old Glory is a nickname for the U.S. flag. The original Old Glory was a flag owned by 19th-century American sea captain, William Driver (March 17, 1803 – March 3, 1886), who flew the flag during his career at sea and later brought it to Nashville, Tennessee, where he settled.
