But business owners who establish proactive strategies for cash management are able to avoid those problems and create new growth opportunities through reinvestment by making their capital work better for them. Consider the following tips to improve cash flow: Understand your operating cycle – Regardless of size, every business must deposit, monitor and manage cash; make payments; fund purchases; invest in their company; and receive payments. Reviewing and understanding each step in this cash flow cycle can help a company work more efficiently. Encourage faster payments – Can you provide an incentive or discount to customers or vendors to encourage them to pay faster? The sooner a payment is received, the sooner you can put that revenue to work for your company. Collections services like lockbox also can help post payments to your accounts more quickly. Consider remote deposits - Some banks offer customers the opportunity to make remote check deposits from their mobile device, sparing them trips to the branch. This allows companies to save time and to keep their workforce focused on operations – a benefit of particular importance for companies with only a few employees. Review your payroll process – If you pay your employees twice a month instead of every other week, you will be managing 24 payroll periods instead of 26 during the course of a year, making your company more efficient. Direct deposit of employees’ paychecks into their accounts can also create efficiencies. Evaluate real-time wires - If your small business is buying or selling overseas, real-time wires may be an option in lieu of visiting a bank branch. Some banks have the ability for customers to make ACH payments from their desk or office, which saves time and increases productivity. Manage outgoing payments in an advantageous manner - Banks can help establish relationships with credit card companies that can speed up payments from customers while giving additional timing or flexibility for repayment to settle your account. Look at opening a business credit card – A business credit card has many advantages, including the establishment of a clear separation of business and personal finances. In addition to providing clarity in the day to day operations of your business, this arrangement can eliminate confusion during tax preparations. If you have employees with company cards, consider solutions that allow you to monitor, track and control the way those cards are used. Have a Plan B – If you assume you can borrow funds to cover a cash shortfall, be sure to have a loan or line of credit set-up before the cash is actually needed. Waiting until the shortfall occurs leaves you in a ditch as most financial institutions will hesitate to lend money when your business is already in financial straits. The African-American Chamber of Commerce of PA, NJ and DE(AACC) will kick-off the Supplier Development Program series. Sponsored by Independence Blue Cross and AmeriHealth Caritas, theAACC Supplier Development Program focuses on key areas that contribute to minority business failure and aims to grow more businesseswho can hire within the communities they serve, and quickly serve theneeds of businesses looking to improve and grow their supplier diversityspend.

“The AACC is working to change a growing crisis in the regionwhere there is a stagnant number of minority businesses that cannot compete and grow their business to scale,” states Shalimar Thomas, Executive Director of the AACC. “By creating a supplier developmentprogram that helps develop established small businesses, the AACC isworking to get more minority businesses educated on the importance andimpact growing their business can have on the region.”

Research indicates that despite the promise with supplier diversity, both minority firms and large companies face challenges in building successful business relationships. Minority businesses are usually smallerand may not have the financial or physical resources to compete withlarge suppliers, therefore, companies may find it difficult to obtain minority suppliers who can provide sufficient scale and service.

“At Independence Blue Cross, we strive to attract business suppliersthat reflect the diversity of the community where we live and work, and

we are proud to support the African-American Chamber of CommerceSupplier Development series,” said Alan Krigstein, Independence executive vice president and chief financial officer. “We respect the diversity of our community and our customers and believe that we canserve them most effectively by embracing diversity within our company. Our corporate culture is one of openness, integrity, and respect where wevalue the contributions of talented business owners with varied backgrounds and viewpoints.”

The Supplier Development program is targeted and promote an ongoing message of sustainability, job creation and capacity building.Classes are taught by industry experts and topics include Industry MarketAnalysis, Developing a Growth Strategy, Developing Your ManagementTeam and Identifying the Problem. Those who complete the program areautomatically nominated for the Good to Grand Award, will have the application fee waived for the Preferred Members Program, receive access to suppliers who can assist you with obtaining larger contracts andlearn valuable techniques that will help grow their business and build capacity.

Walnut Street Theatre concludes its landmark 206th season withBroadway’s rockin’ Tony Award-winning Best Musical, MEMPHIS. Directed and choreographed by Richard Stafford, this exhilarating musical begins previews on May 12th, opens on May 20th and runsthrough July 12th on the WST Mainstage.

From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, comes a hot new musical that bursts off the stage with explosive dancing, irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love. Inspiredby actual events, MEMPHIS is about a radio DJ who wants to change theworld and a club singer who is ready for her big break. The show features an original score by Bon Jovi's David Bryan that evokes thepowerhouse funk of James Brown, the hot guitar riffs of Chuck Berry, the smooth harmonies of the Temptations and the silken, bouncy pop ofthe great girl groups of the period. It's time for the roof-raising rock 'n'roll musical, MEMPHIS!

Disc Jockey Dewey Phillips was one of the first white DJs to playblack music in Memphis during the 1950s. His story inspired DavidBryan (music and lyrics) and Joe DiPietro (book, music and lyrics) towrite the sensational musical MEMPHIS. Bryan is a founding member

and keyboardist of the legendary band Bon Jovi.
