“There's fish in them thar hills!” – Mark Grier

The Newberg Steelheaders participated in our third spawning survey this past Saturday. Five folks had signed on to

participate, but only Susan Dreyer from the Mid-Willamette chapter of the Steelheaders showed up. Luke Westphal,

Susan and yours truly surveyed Hanna, Petch and Clear creeks on the North Yamhill river. Mother Nature blessed us

with rain, wind (and even) sun, but we observed lots of Coho. One thing is for sure: Coho salmon are firmly

established in the Yamhill water shed. The Mitchells (owners of the “Flying M”) have to keep their dogs inside this

time of year, because they eat the Salmon and get sick). Luke is forwarding to Bob Askey a short video of a Coho we

observed in upper Clear creek – 'way above normal Coho habitat, where you might expect to find Steelhead.

Hopefully, it'll be posted on the website. My pictures were a little to dark. Now wouldn't it be nice if the ODFW got

off it's rump and developed a venue for us bank fisherman where we could intercept some of these fish when they

are still fresh?

Additionally, I'm sure you've all heard about that project on the coast where old Christmas trees are dumped into

estuaries as protection for Coho smolts. ODFW wants sportsman’s groups (us) to do something like that here in the

valley. More on that latter. Luke Westphal and the Watershed Council also plan to reach out to youth groups and

get hopefully get them involved in spawning surveys. Good stuff!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s that time of year where we are between the fall salmon run ending and the Winter Steelhead starting.

Winter Steelhead have already been reported being caught on coastal and other rivers. Also have read

several forecasts that our Winter Steelhead run should be pretty good based on the huge run of Coho this

fall. Supposedly that is usually an indicator of some really good Winter Steelhead fishing. You might

want to start making plans and maybe even check on a few Winter Steelhead guides if you only plan to

get out once or twice.

The Coho Spawning Surveys have showed some results. Tom Murtagh of ODFW reported that they

didn’t know Coho were in seen above Slot Falls barrier on Mill Creek.

Luke Westphal has Coho Spawning Surveys scheduled for Sunday 12/7, and Saturday 12/13. These are

rain or shine, although flows/turbidity might affect things. With the rain we are getting starting late

Wednesday night Dec 3 the Yamhill Tributaries are likely high and no visibility. For information contact

How to fillet a fresh silver salmon

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vlwg_ffSGE

Prepare your catch for freezing. We use a Food Saver vacuum bag

system. Note try to buy a unit that has two buttons one for SEALING

and one for VACUUM / SEAL. When making bags from roll the SEALING

button is nice because that is all you need to do is seal the first end.

We have tried other freezer bags with bad results and fish that went

bad because of air leaking into the bags. I thought the ZipVac bags

were good but finally gave up on them after having Steelhead bad from

air that leaked into every bag.

Cut salmon into pieces that will work for the number of people that will

be usually cooking for.

One thing we do now is wrap each piece with Saran Wrap. This seems

to help prevent freezer burn and makes it easier to put in freezer bag

before vacuum and sealing.

*Digital Cooking Thermometer – take the guess work out of cooking

your prize catch. I normally cook till 132 degrees. That allows for the

temp to continue to 135 while removing from barbeque.

One thing we learned using a cooking thermometer for our salmon and

Steelhead is to insert the probe into the thinner pieces first and when

done insert into the a thick piece.

*Recipe - Coho Sandwiches

Found this recipe online and changed a couple things. You can

experiment and come up with a great sandwich.

½ Pint of Canned Salmon - For (3) Sandwiches

Rye Bread

Real butter if you have it or Margarine

Diced Onion amount you like

Diced Dill Pickle amount you like

Mayonnaise amount to help spread on bread

Provolone Cheese use 2 round slices for each sandwich

Ground Pepper to taste

Turmeric just a sprinkle

Mix the salmon, mayonnaise, diced onion and pickle. Add ground

pepper and turmeric. Mix in bowl and cover with saran wrap put in

refrigerator. I think it helps the flavors mix if you do this a while

before making your grilled sandwiches.

Spread a thin layer of the mixture on a slice of Rye bread.

Add two slices of Provolone Cheese.

Add second slice of Rye Bread

Butter and put in frying pan butter side on hot surface. Butter other

side of bread. Turn over several times to cook through but don’t burn

the bread. Similar to a Tuna Melt

Sport Fishing Regulation Updates - Willamette Zone (and other zones)

Check out what rivers will have a three fish limit which can be salmon or Steelhead till December 31. http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/fishing/reg_changes/willamette.asp

• Web Links of Interest: Knot Tying examples. Had this in the newsletter in the past:

This web site has a page that you can pick out different rivers to look at current levels.

Another way to determine species of salmon:

Read the latest story on where

your money has gone for the

salmon license. Not for salmon

but for other not related

funding. People buying these

licenses thinking they are

helping our salmon aren’t going

to be very happy.

I bought this Taylor Digital Cooking

Thermometer at Bi-Mart for less

then $20. Works great. It has a set

temp alarm (temp you want to

stop cooking) and current temp.

Plus start time so you can see how

long it has been cooking.

Meetup Website Helps Bring New and

Experienced Anglers Together If you’re a member of the Northwest Steelheaders, please take a moment to check out a new website that our organization supports. You can even sign up to become a member yourself! It’s easy, and membership is free. The web address is: http://www.meetup.com/NW-Steelheading-Group/ The goal of the website is twofold: First, we wanted a way to list all of our Steelheaders events, volunteer opportunities, and fishing events, so you can access this information quickly and easily. Second, we wanted a tool that would help us reach out to new (or experienced) fisherman and introduce them to the Association of Northwest Steelheaders. So give the website a look, or better yet sign up. Meet some new folks and help support new anglers looking to learn more about catching fish. Cheers! Jeff Hernandez

Fishing Trip with Bob Rees

Bob Rees, President of the Northwest Guides and Anglers Association on coal's

threat to salmon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07-5AmATHIU

Anyone that has lived in areas where coal is mined know the damage it does. Since this

video was made coal is now hauled by train along the Columbia River in open box cars

leaving dust along the tracks. Railroads are Federally regulated, from what I was told and

states can not regulate.

Here is a documentary from Coal River, West Virginia. The mining for coal is by leveling

mountains to flat areas. People living in nearby areas have died from symptoms created

by the coal, infants and kids are dying because of toxic from mining and coal in the water.

Some areas the chemicals and coal is so bad in the well water they can’t even shower in it.

http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/on_coal_river

Coal River Valley, West Virginia is a community surrounded by lush mountains and a

looming toxic threat. Filmed over a period of five years, ON COAL RIVER follows a former

miner and his neighbors in a David-and-Goliath struggle for the future of their valley, their

children, and life as they know it.

Ed Wiley once worked at the same coal plant that threatens his granddaughter's

elementary school. When his local government refuses to act, Ed embarks on a quest to

have the school relocated to safer ground. With a sharp sense of right and wrong, Ed

confronts his local school board, the state government, and a notorious coal company for

putting his grand daughter and his community at risk.

Along the way, Ed is helped by his neighbors Bo and Judy, who are locked in their own

battle with the company over their practice of 'mountaintop removal' - blowing up

mountains to extract coal. Together, Bo and Judy help Ed bring attention to the dangers at

Marsh Fork Elementary, hoping that if they save the school, they can save the valley.
