CHAIRMAN'SFESTIVAL REPORT 2015

Dear Festivalgoer

Welcome to the 20th Newark Beer Festival. Yes, it is hard to believe that we have had twenty glorious years of beer festivals in Newark. It all started in 1996 in the grounds of Newark Castle. On offer were 45 beers, 3 ciders and 1 perry. Despite rushing in further supplies on the Friday night the 2000 drinkers had drunk us dry by 8pm Saturday night.

This year we have over 150 real ales from all over the country. I am certain you will find a style to suit your taste. We have some old favourites and some brand new beers from breweries just opened. We also have birthday beers, including one specially commissioned by a past Newark chairman to celebrate his milestone birthday. Ciders and perries continue to feature with another selection of over thirty to choose from.

Hot and cold food is available throughout the weekend, live bands play and we hope for good weather. Two local charities will be collecting over the weekend. Please give generously.

Of course, all of this would not be possible without the volunteers from Newark CAMRA who organise, set up, serve you and take down our beer festival. My thanks to them and especially the CAMRA festival committee who start planning this May event just after Christmas. We also need to thank the first aiders and countless others who step in when required to make our festival one of the best in the country.

You may have noticed that we now have the National Civil War Centre in Newark. This is just a short walk from here. Why not follow the Civil War Ale Trail visiting pubs along the way?

Finally, thank you, the real ale customer, for supporting us in your thousands each year. So, have a great festival and enjoy the experience in the Real Ale Hub of Newark.

See you next year! Better still why not put Newark in your diary for a Real Ale weekend away?

Cheers

Andrew Birkhead - Chairman, Newark CAMRA

Our quarterly magazine the Beer Gutter Press is published by the Newark-on-Trent branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). The Newark Branch of CAMRA strive to increase consumer choice of real ale by objecting to pub closures and championing high standards of customer service in the area’s public houses. We support our local breweries by promoting the diversity they bring to the bar.

Newark CAMRA also brings national issues such as tax and opening hours to local attention. Importantly, we are a social group of likeminded drinkers of all ages and walks of life. Anyone is welcome to attend our meetings, details of which can be found elsewhere in this issue.

BGP welcomes local-interest beer related articles and letters for publication. All material should be sent to

6NEWARK BEER FESTIVAL | TWENTY newarkcamra.org.uk

Newark Beer Festival is about more than drinking. A quality pint is usually enjoyed more if it’s accompanied by a foot tapping tune or two and we have that perfect mix this weekend. Our talent scouts spend many nights scouring the land’s hot and sweaty venues in an attempt to find the right mix for washing down the ale and cider. Every year they bring us an entertaining mix of musical merriment.

For those of you who prefer to sample their beers without music in the air, we have designated Friday afternoon as a music-free session. You’ll be able to enjoy your tipple in relative serenity until early evening!

Please note the list and timings may be subject to last minute changes due to circumstances beyond our control.

FRIDAY 22ND MAY 3PM - 3.30PM QUIZBrain teasing time with resident “brainiac” Mark Taylor.

7PM - 8PM INDIGOIndigo were formed in 2009 and soon gained a strong reputation around the pubs and clubs, gigging solidly around the East Midlands playing their own brand of totally “Live” cover versions of classic hits from the past five decades. After a couple of line-up changes, they now consist of: David Hughes on Lead/Rhythm Guitar & Lead Vocals, Annie Thompson on Bass & Backing Vocals and Cameron Sunman on Drums & Backing Vocals. They should get the Festival entertainment off to a good start. They can be contacted on Facebook/Indigo Party Band.

8.40PM - 10PM TREEBEARDSheffield’s Treebeard won’t need any introduction. Back by popular demand to grace our Festival stage for the sixth time with their (in their words) “Heavy Wood” music, a mix of original, contemporary & traditional folk music. They were formed in 1998 by Chris and Paul McMahon and Paul Chisnell (Haze & Three Legged Cat). Joining Chris (Guitar and Vocals) and Paul (Bass and Vocals), are Danny McMahon

on Drums, Ceri Ashton on Fiddle, Flute & Vocals and Catrin Ashton on Mandolin & Fiddle. They can be contacted on Facebook/Treebeard Musician/Band.

SATURDAY 23RD MAYDuring the afternoon MORRIS DANCINGBack by popular demand, we have The Lincoln & Micklebarrow Morris Men to entertain you. I’m sure they will be asking for some audience participation again this year. A good start to Saturday afternoon’s proceedings.

3PM - 3.30PM QUIZTime to shake up those brain cells once again with today’s instalment.

4.30PM - 5.30PM SWING NOUVEAUSwing Nouveau are based in Newark, but have performed at festivals and events throughout the UK. They take anything from classic jazz and swing, through to 80’s pop to current chart material and give it a unique twist.

Susie Chambers is one of the few female vocalist/Double Bass players in the country and as a former Big Band singer, brings a wealth of experience and stage presence. Her style has been likened to Paloma Faith and Caro Emerald.

Guitarist and Musical Director Andrew Coe arranges the songs and gives them the Swing Nouveau signature sound. Contact them on Facebook/Swing Nouveau.

6.30PM - 7.40PM CROSSFIRECrossfire are a six piece, female fronted Rock Covers Band, who came together in early 2015, with their sole aim to put together a high energy set of floor filling Rock anthems, such as Whitesnake, Bon Jovi & Thin Lizzy. Classic Rock fans will be in Air Guitar and Head Banging Heaven.

The “Supergroup” features a line-up of some of Newark’s most experienced musicians including: Darren Pointing and Jacob Pointing on Guitars, John Joe Gaskin on Drums, James Manners on Bass &

Backing Vocals, Cameron Sunman on Keyboards & Backing Vocals and finally Danielle Smedley on Lead Vocals.

8.40PM - 10PM SLACK ALICESlack Alice were formed in 1973 by founder member and Vocalist Cliff Stocker, whose gravel rich voice has been compared to Rod Stewart and Eric Burdon. He is ably supported by Guitarists Chris Preston and Colin Redmond and a great Rhythm Section of Alan Sagar on Bass and Liam Barber on Drums.

Their constant gigging has earned them rave reviews and they can be found playing at most Blues Festivals around the country. Their latest CD “Never Never Ever Give Up”, proves they can still deliver and as The Animals’ John Steel quotes: “I have to say that Newcastle continues to produce classics. This band has got to be up there along with The Animals, Bryan Ferry and Lindisfarne”. Looks like we’re in for a cracking finale to this year’s Beer Festival Saturday. Contact: [email protected].

SUNDAY 24TH MAY2.30PM - 3PM QUIZYour last chance to win a gallon of beer with today’s brain teasers.

THE NEWARK CRUSADER

We were delighted to hear we had been chosen as one

of Newark CAMRA’s nominated charities this year. The Newark Crusader gives older, disabled and disadvantaged children and adults the opportunity for a relaxing trip along the River Trent.

The boat is moored at Farndon Riverside and runs two hour trips twice daily. It is equipped with a ramp for wheelchair access and there is a large disabled toilet. Each trip allows for groups of up to 12 passengers (including carers) and always

goes with a fully qualifi ed skipper and another crew member.

We are strictly a charity and we are non-profi t making and the funds raised will help with the maintenance of the boat and refreshments for visitors.

For more information or to make a booking contact Les Reid on 07879 420915 or visit www.newarkcrusader.com

REACH NEWARKWe support adults with learning

disabilities to reach beyond expectation and make a good life in

their local community - a life full of meaning, challenge and opportunity.

There are almost 15,000 adults with learning disabilities in Nottinghamshire today. Without the right support and meaningful things to do, many face loneliness, poor health and restricted lives.

Reach currently supports over 150 adults in the county. We create opportunities for people to gain new skills and knowledge so that they can build happier, healthier lives.

Where?Activities run Monday to Friday from our bases

in Newark, Southwell, Mansfi eld and Flower Pod our social enterprise which is located just outside of Southwell. We also run a domiciliary care service (The Care Project) which provides truly personalised care for individuals with a variety of needs.

What do we offer?Over 40 weekly courses such as cookery,

gardening, arts and crafts, singing, fi tness, computers and dancing. Weekly socials, outings and holidays; for some the only chance to go away and which provides respite for family members.

How is our service funded? As a charity we need to raise £100,000 a year

just to survive and deliver our high quality service. We urgently need to raise funds so that we can reach more people. Please give generously at the Festival.

FESTIVALETIQUETTE

Beer festival ‘virgins’ should take a few moments here to learn about Festival Etiquette. If you are standing with an empty glass, pick a brew at

random, and then return to this page. Off you go.

Now here are some tips to help enjoy your session.

1. The breweries are listed in alphabetical order, followed by the brewery’s location, the beer strength and then a short tasting note. Remember – some of these brews are so new not even our cellarmen have tasted them, so please be tolerant if the descriptions aren’t 100% accurate.

2. We suggest you start at the lower end of the ABV (alcohol by volume) scale, say around 3.5%,

and move steadily towards the heavier beers at 6 or 7% and beyond. Remember, at this end of the scale you may lose your self-respect, use of your legs, or even your partner!

3. We can’t guarantee that every beer will be available at every session. It is our policy not to serve beer that isn’t ready, and some beers (marked as RES in the list) aren’t likely to be on first. If your choice isn’t available, there may be several reasons: i) We were unable to get the advertised beer – an alternative from that brewery will usually be on offer. ii) The beer is not yet ready to serve – be patient, it may be available a little later. iii) You’re late and it’s already sold out!

4. Don’t forget to eat! Visit our caterers occasionally to help soak up the beer. Or if you just want nibbles, we stock crisps, nuts and locally produced scratchings in the marquee.

PLEASE – don’t drink and drive. Soft drinks are available for drivers and we have timetables and taxi numbers at the information desk.

PINT of View

Festival-goers may recall that last year a new group was formed by local pubs and breweries called Racoon – the Real Ale Collective of Newark. The

group held a Meet the Brewer event in town in July.Well, Racoon has undergone a transformation

and expanded to include new pubs in town and it’s undergone a re-brand too and is now known as PINT – Pubs In Newark Together. The group’s key aim is the promotion of Newark as a real ale hub – it’s been estimated that on any given day a visitor could choose from a range of some 60 real ales just by taking a short walk around town. So in Newark every day is a beer festival!

PINT’s fi rst project has been to produce “The Civil War Ale Trail” in time to mark the opening of the National Civil War Centre earlier this month. This free publication, available at the Festival, is a guide for the visitor to the top civil war attractions, and ten of the best pubs in town. It is available from all participating pubs and is being distributed to tourist information centres, libraries and other outlets across the region and beyond.

So, if you’ve enjoyed the festival please return and see what the town has to offer in terms of history and ale!

PINT supports the aims of CAMRA and we hope that the two organisations will collaborate on a number of exciting projects in the coming year.

Newark is home to the newly built National Civil War Centre and was the scene of three deadly

sieges during the English Civil war of 1642-1646. e ercely Royalist townspeople endured

starvation and plague before King Charles 1st ordered them to surrender in 1646, following

his own surrender. Historical sites can be found all over the town.

For a full description of the Civil War sites please pick up a copy of the Civil War Trail map, published by the

28NEWARK BEER FESTIVAL | TWENTY newarkcamra.org.uk

India Pale Ale changed the face of brewing early in the 19th century. The new technologies of the Industrial Revolution enabled brewers to use pale

malts to fashion beers that were genuinely golden or pale bronze in colour.

First brewed in London and Burton-on-Trent for the colonial market, particularly the troops in India, IPAs were strong in alcohol and high in hops: the preservative character of the hops helped keep the beers in good condition during long sea journeys.

Red and Black IPAs can now be found, and IPA is one of the most popular styles of the American Craft Beer community.

Following on from the success of the last two years, Newark CAMRA will be holding its third IPA Trail, from 31st July to 9th August. This promises to be bigger and better than last year with more pubs involved, stocking a range of IPA’s at 5%+, and more participants over the trail period, which takes in International IPA day on Thursday 6th August.

Pick up a collector card from any pub on the trail or fi nd one in the centre of the July edition of the Beer Gutter Press. You will be rewarded with a sticker for buying a pint or half of IPA in each pub you visit. Completed collector cards will go into a prize draw. Look out for the special IPA pump crowns, identifying

which beers are in the Trail. The event is open to all, you don’t have to be a CAMRA member to take part.

Many thanks to the following pubs for agreeing to take part this year: • Bramley Apple, Southwell • Castle, Newark • Castle and Falcon, Newark • Castle Barge, Newark • Chequers, Elston • Clay Tavern, Newark • Final Whistle, Newark • Flying Circus, Newark • Fox and Crown, Newark • Grey Horse, Collingham • Hearty Goodfellow, Southwell • Just Beer Micropub, Newark • Muskham Ferry, North Muskham • Navigation Waterfront, Newark • Old Coach House, Southwell • Organ Grinder, Newark • Oscar’s Inn, Newark • Prince Rupert, Newark • The Ram, Newark • Real Ale Store, Newark • Sir John Arderne, Newark • Vaults, Newark.

LocALe accreditation is awarded to pubs which pledge to always offer at least one locally brewed real ale on their bar.

Pubs wishing to apply for accreditation should contact their local branch. More information at: www.newarkcamra.org.uk/locale
