312th Derby Winterfest

Welcome to Derby CAMRA’s 12th Winter

Beer Festival which showcases some of

the very best that brewing, cider & mead

making has to offer. We have assembled over 300

real ales, real ciders & perries, continental beers and

meads, food and entertainment within the world’s

first and oldest surviving railway roundhouse.

I hope you enjoy the Festival and like the selection

of beers which have been painstakingly put together.

With over 333 beers ordered the selection and

variety for 2013 is amazing. Bringing together

new & innovative brews, old favourites and award

winning ales there really is something for everyone.

We also have two brewery bars, Derventio has one

in the Main Hall next to the CAMRA Membership

stall and Shiny also have one in the Main Hall.

Have you found the Carriage Room yet?? It’s along

the corridor, past the music marquee. The Carriage

Room has stillage for lots of beer, cider & perry.

There are also more seats and tables this year. The

music starts around 8pm each evening.

CAMRA campaigns for real ale, pubs and drinkers

rights, and has done since 1971. I would urge you to

join CAMRA if you are not already a member as

there is always lots going on and you can have fun

picking and choosing what to get involved with.

The Festival really is getting better each year

and excitingly we host CAMRA’s National Winter

Ales Festival next year - dates tentatively may

be around the 19th February – 22nd February 2014.

Keep an eye on http://www.derbycamra.org.uk/ for

confirmation nearer the time.

I must publically thank each & every volunteer who

has been involved with this Festival. To put this

simply none of what you see around you today

would have happened without the team of

volunteers who have turned up to serve you,

who have sat in pubs planning this Festival , and

who continue to keep both you and me smiling.

Cheers,

Derby Winter Beer Festival Chair 2013

Further details of the Festival can be found on

the inside pages or by checking out our

website: www.derbycamra.org.uk or

e-mail: [email protected]

Festival GlassesThis year’s souvenir Festival tankards are located in

the entrance marquee and are decorated with both

the Festival and Sponsors logo. We hope that you will

want to keep one but if you don’t please return it for

a full refund. The glasses contain both a half pint and

a third of a pint line allowing you to sample as many

as you wish.

Festival FoodThere are various food outlets dotted around the

Festival located in the Main Room. Hot food is

provided by the Derby College Caterers. We also

have a Cheese Stall, Chocolate Stall and Pipers Crisps

Stall.

Festival Sales and Membership StallsDon’t forget to pay a visit to the CAMRA Sales

stall located in the main room where you will find

a whole host of souvenirs such as books, pens,

key-rings, etc as well as the magnificent Festival

T-Shirts.

Also while in the main room why not join CAMRA

at the Membership desk or join later via the form in

this programme. With £20 worth of Wetherspoons

vouchers for all new members and discounted entry

at many other Beer Festivals you would be a fool not

too!

Festival Quiet RoomsThe Main Room and Carriage Room will be quiet

rooms this year with the marquee housing the live

entertainment. Various seating is dotted around the

Festival.

Festival CharitiesThis year the festival cloakroom is being run by

the Derbyshire Mountain Rescue Team, the service is

free but if you are happy with this service then

please leave a charity donation in the box provided.

In the evening Scropton Riding for the Disabled will

be collecting at the marquee as you leave. If you can

spare some change it will make a real difference

to lots of children and adults. In previous years

your donations have helped support the Derbyshire

Association of the Blind, the Mayor’s charity fund,

the MS Society and the TSUNAMI appeal, so thank

you in advance once again for your kind generosity.

Welcome to the 12th Derby CAMRA Winter Beer Festival

Ales Festival 2014

Derby Roundhouse

February 19th - 22nd

CAMRA's premier WinterEvent comes to Derby

Page 20: 2013 Derby Winter Beer Festival Programme

20 12th Derby Winterfest

Welcome to the cider and perry bar. Responding to

feedback from last year’s festival this year we have an

additional cider/perry bar in the carriage room.

Furthermore, the Carriage Room Bar will feature a different

range from that in the Main Hall, thereby increasing the

overall choice. All the ciders and perries sold here are ‘real’

in the sense that they consist of nothing but fermented

apple and fermented pear juice respectively. You will

find that the majority of ciders and perries come from the

traditional cider making areas in the West Country where

apple and pear varieties are grown specifically for cider/

perry making. Despite this, cider making in other parts of

the country is on the increase and we have a number of

ciders from the East Midlands as well as some from Norfolk

and Kent. The range of styles and tastes is considerable and

the staff will be happy to give you small tastes provided

we are not too busy.

The tub labels should give you a pretty good idea of what

to expect when ordering. Green labels are cider and yellow

labels are perry. Most ciders / perries are made from a blend

of apple / pear varieties; where a single variety has been

used this will be identified on the tub label. All the ciders

and perries have been tasted prior to the festival and they

have been categorized as Very Dry, Dry, Medium Dry,

Medium, Medium Sweet, Sweet or Very Sweet, again this

is on the label. It is a bit subjective and you may disagree,

but at least it gives you a starting point. Many ciders are

naturally hazy or even cloudy although really thick ciders,

complete with floating bits, are fortunately a thing of

the past. That is plenty if introduction; you could easily

have drunk half a pint of cider while you are reading this!
