Welcome to the St Austell Brewery Celtic Beer Festival 2014

Welcome once again to St Austell Brewery’s Celtic Beer Festival. As always it gives us great pleasure to host this very special event where good company combines with excellent ale and great music to make what always proves to be a memorable occasion.

My glass is always half full but is there really a better way of spending a Saturday in the winter?! After all we’re not only having the time of our lives but your attendance today is contributing as ever to our St. Austell Brewery Charitable Trust. So surely this has to be a winning combination. Today’s Festival is likely to raise in the order of £10,000 for local charities so thank you for your generous support which is greatly appreciated.

I am in the fortunate position of being able to report that the Brewery has enjoyed another busy year and by the end of December we will be very close to a spectacular 100,000 barrels sold in 2014. We will be going all out to hit that milestone this time next year.

In September it was announced that St. Austell Brewery and Tribute Ale had completed a memorable hat-trick. The UK’s publicans voted us Britain’s Best Regional Brewer and Tribute the nation’s favourite Regional Cask Ale for the third year running. We were delighted to have won it once so you can imagine how pleased we are to have made it three in a row. More recently we were presented with the BBPA’s ‘Heart of the Community’ award at the annual dinner in London.

On the brewing front it is reassuring that, although Tribute continues to lead the way, both Proper Job and Korev are gaining in popularity with sales increasing dramatically.

Our bottling line has been operating at full pelt keeping up with the demand from the major supermarkets while our new depot at Avonmouth is distributing to the Cheltenham and Gloucester area extending our delivered wholesale territory.

We have acquired two pubs this year – The Port Gaverne Hotel in Cornwall and The Windwhistle Inn at Cricket St. Thomas in Somerset taking our number of pubs currently to 167. In addition our newly built pub Samuel Jones on the Quay in Exeter opened its doors on 5th November. The craft ale and smokehouse is already proving very popular so please do call in if you are passing.

I am grateful to our employees who generously volunteer to set up the Festival and staff the bars. There are too many to list but there is one individual I want to pick out who has made a significant contribution to every beer festival we have ever hosted – Len Barrett. He works tirelessly to ensure the day runs smoothly and we owe him a great debt of gratitude. Well done and thank you also to Roger and his team for brewing up some fine ales for our delectation.

Please do your best to enjoy yourselves and I trust you have a Happy Christmas and prosperous 2015. Cheers!

Welcome From Roger RymanSt Austell Brewery Head Brewer

Welcome back to the Brewery cellars and the 16th annual Celtic Beer Festival.

The festival remains a firm fixture in the Cornish social calendar. For many today kicks off the Christmas party season, although the original November date was selected as back when the festival first started, this was considered to be a quieter time of the year for the brewing team, so we could use our time to plan and a organise this wonderful event. Things have changed, with brewery sales likely to reach 100,000 barrels by the end of the year there is no such thing as a quiet period. Our production now equates to a pint of St Austell Brewery beer being sold, somewhere in the world every 1.2 seconds. Look at our four bars in the festival, and imagine that volume of beer being sold, non-stop, 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. No wonder our brewers are kept busy! However, despite the demands of keeping the barrels of Tribute, Proper Job and Korev rolling our brewers have still found time to produce nearly 40 different beers, many brewed in our micro-brewery in their spare time when they are off shift. For once I have been able to step back and allow the team to show their skills. We have also reinvigorated the Celtic theme which originally inspired the festival by conducting a Celtic collaboration brew. On the first day of the Celtic new year (1st November) brewers from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Brittany descended on Cornwall to create a very special beer at St Austell Brewery, Celtic Cross, a red IPA, brewed with roasted malts, a new ‘experimental’ variety of hops and a blend of special ingredients to represent the Celtic countries and regions (saffron for Cornwall, rowan berries for Scotland, shamrocks for Ireland, Welsh apple juice and Breton wild garlic). The resulting beer will be sold at the festival, and across all corners of the British Isles.

Welcome From Roger RymanSt Austell Brewery Head Brewer

The quality of our beer has once again been rewarded with more major regional, national and international brewing awards than we are able to list individually. We have been honoured in excess of 30 times, a staggering haul of silverware that means we are going to have to buy a bigger trophy cabinet! Perhaps I am most proud of Proper Job being awarded the SIBA National Gold Medal for best bitters, but the awards are spread across all of our range, both established brands and new. These awards for our full range of beers demonstrate that our vision to produce individual beer with spirit and character is being recognised across a global stage. We are also pleased to welcome to this year’s festival renowned beer journalists Roger Protz and Adrian Tierney-Jones. Roger is editor of CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, whilst Adrian writes on beer in many national publications. They are attending our festival to promote their new book ‘Britain’s Beer Revolution’ and will be on hand at the festival to sign your copy too.

I very much hope that you enjoy the festival, please drink sensibly and respect our neighbours when you leave.

Roger Ryman, Head Brewer

St Austell Brewery Charitable TrustHelping Others Across The South West

Every penny of profit from the Beer Festival goes back to the community, so thank you for coming, thank you for your continued support and thank you for helping us to help others.

If you would like to nominate a good cause or charity, or would like further information about the trust, please contact us at St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust, 63 Trevarthian Road, St Austell, PL25 4BY or on [email protected].

The Trust supports charities, good causes and individuals in need in our communities. Here are just a few thank yous we have received...

“Dear friends at St. Austell Brewery. I would like to say a huge thank you for getting my trike for me. I am so happy as I can go on the cycle path with my friends. I still struggle to ride up hill, mummy says I will get better. Red is my favourite colour. Thank you again. Love fromMax Mountford (Max is 9 & has hypermobility syndrome)

“I am writing to thank you for the extremely generous donation of £735. As you know the donation provided a child from St Austell with a five day break with CHICKS at our Coastal Retreat on ‘Apollo’ camp in March. CHICKS aims to provide disadvantaged children from across the UK, including many from various areas of Cornwall, with a free respite break.” CHICKS Coastal Retreat (www.chicks.org.uk)

“I am writing to thank you for the donation of £1,200 towards Soundabout’s Sounds of Intent training sessions based in Cornwall. Your support will make a real difference to Soundabout and the programme we deliver.” Soundabout (www.soundabout.org)
