Given the unprecedented circumstances the world is facing, we are not celebrating in the ways we had long expected to—but celebrate we do! Class of 2020, we are so proud to salute you and all that you have achieved in your four years at NYU Abu Dhabi. On behalf of our faculty and our entire community, we particularly want to recognize the leadership, solidarity, and resilience you have shown in this last semester.

You came to NYU Abu Dhabi from the UAE and around the world, and you take leave today after an experience that few can claim: an undergraduate education during which you learned alongside some of the world’s most talented students and professors, and helped shape and advance a young university like no other. Your proven ability to work together across diference and to bring creative, caring solutions into our world is needed more than ever.

Now you are poised to join a community that will number over 1,400 NYU Abu Dhabi graduates, part of a distinctly global family of more than 500,000 NYU alumni including recent graduates from NYU New York and those from NYU Shanghai who will celebrate virtually next week. The NYU torch, symbolizing “academic purpose and authority,” has been an integral part of the University’s identity since 1911, and a part of its commencement ceremonies since 1938.

In 2014, members of the NYU Abu Dhabi Design Collective collaborated to create a torch for NYU Abu Dhabi, which while remaining true to the structure of the original, incorporates elements drawn from local cultural heritage.

Likewise, the ceremony of the torch, inspired by the practice in New York by which a senior member of the faculty passes the torch to the youngest undergraduate degree candidate, has been adapted for NYU Abu Dhabi’s commencement. Here, a member of the graduating class passes the torch to a member of the following year’s graduating class.

History of New York University Abu Dhabi Established in partnership between New York University (NYU) and the emirate of Abu Dhabi, NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) has assembled over the past decade a remarkable community of scholars, students, researchers, artists, inventors, and others who have contributed to the growth of the UAE’s capital as a global hub of knowledge and culture, while establishing a new model of higher education for today’s complex world.

The groundwork for NYU Abu Dhabi began long before the undergraduates we celebrate today arrived on campus. Conceived in 2006, the idea for the University was built on the goal to create a world-class American liberal arts and research institution in the United Arab Emirates, offering an unparalleled educational opportunity that would attract the brightest students and academics from the Emirates and around the world.

The first educational offering at NYUAD began in 2008 with the inception of the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholars Program. This annual eight-month enrichment and leadership development program — which continues today — is for top undergraduate students enrolled in the UAE’s three federal universities.

Also in 2008, the NYUAD Institute hosted its inaugural public event (at Al Mamoura Auditorium) to launch its series of scholarly and public programs, including academic conferences, workshops, lectures, film series, and performances, that offers a platform for intellectual discourse in the capital.

NYUAD’s Downtown Campus was dedicated on December 7, 2009, and the University welcomed its first class

in August 2010. NYUAD’s Center for Science and Engineering opened soon afterward, providing top-of-the-line laboratory facilities and equipment enabling new and wide-ranging research activity.

In 2011, the University launched the Summer Academy, an 18-month program designed to strengthen the academic profiles of highly motivated Abu Dhabi-based Emirati high school students. This rich cultural and academic program enhances the ability of participants to gain admission to and perform well at top-tier English-language universities.

Since welcoming its inaugural class a decade ago, NYUAD students have excelled and thrived in both academic and extracurricular activities and have received awards and public recognition for accomplishments across academia, athletics, public service, and the arts. In 2012, an NYUAD team from the Class of 2014 won part of the $1 million Hult Global Case Challenge prize. In 2013, a member of NYUAD’s senior class was recognized as the University’s first Rhodes Scholar. Since then, 13 additional students have been selected to join the elite community of scholars at Oxford University – bringing to 14 the total number of Rhodes Scholars NYUAD has produced in its first seven graduating classes.

Today, NYU Abu Dhabi celebrates the graduation of its seventh class, honoring the exemplary achievement, intellectual passion, and initiative of the Class of 2020.

History of New York University Founded in New York City in 1831 by a group of eminent private citizens, New York University was innovative from the start. One founder, the great statesman Albert Gallatin, declared his intention to establish “a system of rational and practical education fitting for all and… opened to all.” In contrast to the elite and sectarian education that prevailed at the time, NYU would serve the needs of the emerging middle class and welcome students regardless of religion or social background.

The years that followed saw many changes, from moving the undergraduate college in Lower Manhattan to a pastoral campus in the Bronx at the end of the 19th century and selling that same campus in the early 1970s when faced with financial difficulty; to expanding the number of professional schools and enrolling the largest number of returning World War II veterans in the nation; to engineering a rise in competitiveness throughout the last decades of the 20th century that led a prominent educational scholar to deem NYU in 2003 “the success story in contemporary American higher education.”

Today, NYU is one of the world’s foremost research universities. The University’s more than 50,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students come from all 50 states and from 133 foreign countries.

Its alumni form a community of more than 500,000 throughout the world. Its schools and colleges encompass the arts and sciences, law, medicine, business, dentistry, education, nursing, performing and fine arts, public service, engineering, social work, public health, and professional studies. Its renowned faculty includes recipients of Nobel, Pulitzer, and Abel Prizes; Academy, Grammy, and Tony Awards; National Medals for Science and the Arts; and the MacArthur Fellowship, among many others.

Biographies

David Levering Lewis Julius Silver University Professor and Professor of History Emeritus, New York University

David Levering Lewis joined the NYU faculty as professor of history on September 1, 2003. His field is comparative history with special focus on 20th-century US social history and strong interests in 19th -century Africa, 20th-century France, and Muslim Iberia. In October 2003, Mr. Lewis was named Julius Silver University Professor and Professor of History at NYU. On September 19, 2010, Mr. Lewis had the singular honor to deliver the address on the occasion of the first NYUAD convocation: “From Athens to Abu Dhabi: Arrival of the Global University.”

A 1956 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Fisk University, B.A., in history and philosophy, he holds graduate history degrees from Columbia (M.A., ‘59) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (Ph.D., ‘63). From 1985 to 1994, he held the Martin Luther King, Jr., Professorship in the Rutgers-New Brunswick history department, and from 1994-2003 was King University Professor. He has taught at the University of Notre Dame, Howard University, University of California -San Diego; and Harvard. He retired from NYU in 2013 as Julius Silver University Professor, Emeritus.

Mr. Lewis has received fellowships from the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (twice), the Guggenheim Foundation, the John D. and Catharine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the American Academy in Berlin. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and of the American Philosophical Society. He is a former trustee of the National Humanities Center, a former commissioner of the National Portrait Gallery, a former senator of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and served as president of the Society of American Historians, 2002-03 On February 25, 2010, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama at the White House.

Mr. Lewis has authored ten books: King: A Biography (1970, 1978, 2013); Prisoners of Honor: The Dreyfus Affair (1974); District of Columbia: A Bicentennial History (1976); When Harlem Was in Vogue (1980); The Race to Fashoda: European Colonialism and African Resistance in the Scramble for Africa (1988); W.E.B. Du Bois: Biography of a Race, 1868-1919 (1993); W.E.B.

Du Bois: The Fight for Equality and the American Century, 1919-1963 (2000). Each Du Bois volume received the Pulitzer Prize for Biography (1994 and 2001) and the first Du Bois volume was also awarded the Bancroft Prize and the Francis Parkman Prize. Henry Holt and Company published W.E.B. Du Bois: A Biography, a single-volume version of the two-volume life and times of W.E.B. Du Bois in July 2009. Lewis’s recent book, God’s Crucible: Islam and the Making of Europe, 570 to 1215 was published by Norton (2008). That book has been translated into Turkish,

Spanish, Portuguese, Croatian, Korean, and Indonesian. His recent life and times of Wendell Willkie was published by Liveright/Norton in 2018: The Improbable Wendell Willkie:The Businessman Who Saved the Republican Party and His Country, and Conceived a New World Order.

Mr. Lewis has compiled two editions: The Harlem Renaissance Reader (1994) and W.E.B. Du Bois: A Reader (1995). A Small Nation of People: W.E. B. Du Bois & African American Portraits of Progress (2003), co-authored with Deborah Willis, was a commission from the Library of Congress. He has reviewed for the New York Times Sunday Book Review; New Yorker; Washington Post Book World; New York Review of Books; Nation; The American Scholar.

Mr. Lewis resides in Manhattan and Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, with Dolores Root. Allison Lillian Lewis and Michael Wilson and granddaughters, Marissa and Natalie, live in Washington, DC.


Biographies

William R. Berkley Chairman of the NYU Board of Trustees

William R. Berkley founded W. R. Berkley Corporation, a Fortune 500 property-casualty insurance holding company, in 1967, and served continuously as Chairman of the Board and the company’s Chief Executive Ofcer until 2015, when he became Executive Chairman. In addition, he is Chairman of many of the company subsidiaries, including Berkley Dean & Company, an investment management company.

During his career, Mr. Berkley has founded a number of public and private companies, some of which he continues to control or serve as Chairman or Director. In addition to these enterprises, he has held similar roles in several fnancial institutions, including a bank and a number of industrial companies. He is former Chairman of the American Insurance Association, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Parks Conservation Association.

Mr. Berkley is a graduate of New York University and the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He is Chair of the New York University Board of Trustees and has served in various capacities at NYU for almost three decades, including Chairman of the Board of Overseers of the Stern School of Business and member of the Board of Trustees of NYU Langone Health, as well as Vice Chairman of the NYU Board of Trustees. In addition, he has served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Georgetown University, where he helped create the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Afairs, which is devoted to fostering inter-religious dialogue with a goal of improving global cultural understanding. He is also a former Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the University of Connecticut.

Mr. Berkley served as Chairman of Achievement First, a group of charter schools operating in the New York Metropolitan area, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, until 2015 and continues to serve as a director. Achievement First schools serve over 12,000 inner-city children and have been rated among the outstanding charter schools in America.

Over the years, he has received many awards for his business, civic, and philanthropic activities, including an honorary doctor of law degree from Mercy College. In 1999, he was awarded the Medallion for Entrepreneurship by Beta Gamma Sigma, which honors outstanding individuals who combine innovative business achievements with service to humanity. In April 2006, he received the Charles Waldo Haskins award, given annually by NYU’s Stern School of Business to a nationally prominent business and public service leader. He was the 2011 recipient of the Valentine Mott Award, given by the NYU Langone Medical Center, in recognition of exceptional and long-standing support and leadership. An avid collector of antiquarian books, he is a member of the American Antiquarian Society, The Grolier Club, and the Walpole Society.

Andrew Hamilton President, New York University

Andrew Hamilton became president of New York University on January 1, 2016. Under his leadership, NYU has made significant advances. Applications for first-year admission have increased by 40 percent, and this fall the University welcomed the most selective and diverse freshman class in its history. Since President Hamilton’s arrival, NYU has increased its research expenditures at a rate higher than any other US college or university. It has reached all-time highs in rankings of both national and international universities.

Before coming to NYU, Dr. Hamilton served as the Vice Chancellor of Oxford University from 2009 to 2015. Previously, he had served as provost of Yale University.

In addition to his record as an academic leader, Dr. Hamilton is an award-winning, widely published chemist, and he has continued to maintain his scholarly work— including an active research laboratory—while holding leadership positions. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the American Council on Education.

At Yale—where he joined the faculty in 1997—he was the Benjamin Silliman Professor of Chemistry and professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry. Prior to joining Yale’s faculty, he was professor of chemistry at the University of Pittsburgh and an assistant professor of chemistry at Princeton University. Dr. Hamilton received a first class BSc from the University of Exeter, his master’s degree from the University of British Columbia, and his doctorate from the University of Cambridge. He is the recipient of honorary doctorates from the University of Surrey, Tsinghua University, and the University of South Florida, among others.

President Hamilton and his wife, Jennie, have three adult children.


Biographies

Mariët Westermann Vice Chancellor, New York University Abu Dhabi

Mariët Westermann, former executive vice president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, former provost of NYU Abu Dhabi, former director of NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts, and art historian, joined NYU Abu Dhabi as Vice Chancellor on August 1, 2019.

Westermann had been with the Mellon Foundation since 2010, and was the executive vice president for programs and research since 2016. In that role, she launched initiatives that study and promote the value of the humanities and the liberal arts, strengthen community colleges, encourage graduate education reform, renew preservation of cultural heritage around the world, and support scholars and artists at risk. Prior to the Foundation she was on the faculty at NYU, first as director of the Institute of Fine Arts and then as the first provost of NYU Abu Dhabi. Before joining NYU in 2002, she was associate director of research at the Clark Art Institute. From 1995 to 2001, she was an assistant and associate professor of art history at Rutgers University.

She received her undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Williams College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She received her Master’s and her PhD from NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts.

Westermann’s principal area of scholarly interest is the art of the Netherlands, her native country. She is widely published in the field, including A Worldly Art: The Dutch Republic 1585–1718 (1996); The Amusements of Jan Steen: Comic Painting in the 17th Century (1997); Rembrandt – Art and Ideas (2000); and numerous articles. She has edited five books, including Anthropologies of Art (2005). Her extensive work with museums includes her Rijksmuseum Dossier: Johannes Vermeer (2004); the curatorship of Art and Home: Dutch Interiors in the Age of Rembrandt (Denver Art Museum and Newark Museum, 2001); and numerous exhibition catalog essays. She is currently preparing an exhibition and book on the resonance of the Garden of Eden in the history, theology, and art of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, with significant implications for garden practice in these cultures. She has been the recipient of fellowships, honors, and grants from a wide range of organizations, including the National Endowment for the Humanities, American Philosophical Society, Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, Clark Art Institute, College Art Association, and Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Vice Chancellor Westermann serves on the boards of the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Zones (ALIPH) and the Scholar Rescue Fund.

Fabio Piano Provost, New York University Abu Dhabi

Fabio Piano is the Provost of NYU Abu Dhabi. He has held this position, as the institution’s chief academic officer, over its historic first decade of academic activity. During this decade, NYU Abu Dhabi has grown to become a major intellectual hub for learning, research, scholarly, and artistic activities in the UAE and beyond. Even before his appointment, Prof. Piano was instrumental in developing and advancing NYU Abu Dhabi, helping to craft its innovative undergraduate science curriculum, as well as its distinctive research program.

Before joining NYU Abu Dhabi, Prof. Piano was a founder, in New York, of a flagship NYU research Center, the Center for Genomics and Systems Biology. Prof. Piano served as the Center’s inaugural Director for seven years developing its strategic and execution plans and a new state of the art facility. He helped bring to NYU Abu Dhabi a similar Center of excellence. The NYU Abu Dhabi’s Center for Genomics and Systems Biology works on key questions around sustainable energy production, food security, and fundamental biomedical questions around embryonic development and neurobiology.

As a Professor at NYU in New York and Abu Dhabi, he maintains an active research program in genomics and systems biology and has taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels at both campuses.

Prior to serving as a faculty member in Biology at NYU, Prof. Piano was a Damon Runyon Cancer Research Fellow and Senior Researcher at Cornell University, where he studied early embryo development and evolutionary biology.

Prof. Piano holds a Laurea from the University of Florence and a PhD in Biology from NYU, where he also received his BA, MS, and M.Phil.


Biographies

Kyle Farley Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Dean of Students

Kyle Farley serves as NYU Abu Dhabi’s Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, providing strategic oversight for a comprehensive set of programs and resources for students that enables the university to reach its highest aspirations as a source of intellectual, cultural, and social vitality for both the UAE and the wider world. A scholar of Early American history by training, Farley has spent over fifteen years helping students integrate their academic pursuits with their residential and community experiences so they can find deeper meaning and purpose across their time in university. He is a strong advocate for the transformative power of a liberal arts education to broaden perspectives and deepen understanding across differences, and has held senior higher education leadership roles in the US, Australia, Singapore, and the UAE.

As the Dean of Jonathan Edwards College at Yale University, Farley taught courses in the History Department, oversaw academic support resources and served as the primary advisor for over a thousand undergraduate students. In Australia, he was appointed Dean of Higher Education at Academies Australasia. As the inaugural Dean of Students at Yale-NUS College, Farley built structures for student engagement and support for Singapore’s first residential, liberal arts institution, providing leadership on all matters related to the student experience. In his current role at NYU Abu Dhabi, Farley oversees the Division of Campus Life, including residential education, leadership and career development, student life, community outreach, intercultural education, spiritual life, health and wellness, fitness, and athletics.

Farley received his BA in Philosophy from Calvin College, and a PhD in History from the University of Pennsylvania.

Abdulla Alhashmi Class of 2020, B.A.

Abdulla Alhashmi, from the UAE, is graduating with a BA in Economics and Philosophy. During his time at NYU Abu Dhabi, he was a member of the Sufara’a Student Ambassadors program, organizing and hosting events that fostered community dialogue on topics such as diversity in higher education and environmental initiatives in the UAE, while also serving as an informal Emirati dialect coach for Ramsah Table, a student-led conversation group for Emirati dialect learners and speakers. Additionally, Abdulla volunteered with the Boys Education Network (BEN) at NYU Abu Dhabi, where he facilitated workshops on leadership, community-building, and empathy with secondary school students. During his undergraduate career, Abdulla interned with Dubai Exports, the UAE’s National Program for Advanced Skills, and the UAE Education and Human Resources Council (EHRC). As a 2020 UAE Rhodes Scholar, Abdulla will be attending the University of Oxford come this fall and pursuing an MSc in Economics for Development. In his spare time, Abdulla enjoys reading history, shooting 35mm film, and playing outdoor sports.

Lujain Ibrahim Class of 2020, B.S.

Lujain is a Palestinian-Jordanian student graduating with a BS in Computer Engineering. She is passionate about technology for social impact and good, STEM education and representation, and interdisciplinary applications of engineering. This year, she completed her senior Capstone project on designing a wearable device and a deep learning system for monitoring cardiovascular health. From building chatbots for examining the role of technology in the Arab world to representing the student body in academic committees, she has always scouted for opportunities with the potential of having a positive impact individually and collectively. At NYU Abu Dhabi, she served on the executive board of the women empowerment in STEM group and as the Engineering Student Representative on the Academics Board of Student Government. Through these roles, she worked on creating spaces and structures of inclusiveness and representation. Over these past four years, she also studied in Qatar, Jordan, Italy, Oman, and completed a semester and summer at NYU in New York where she interned at an artificial intelligence for video-editing startup.


A Message from Student Speaker Lujain Ibrahim To the Class of 2020, our families, and our loved ones,

I am honored and humbled to welcome you to NYU Abu Dhabi’s Seventh Commencement Exercises. I remember March 3rd of 2016 almost too well. At around 7 pm that Thursday night, I said goodbye to my parents as I was off to spend my first nights away from home at a place that has now become home. Just like my parents, I was tingling with excitement and fear. I also definitely got lost on my way to A1. During that weekend, I was flooded with uncertainty and doubt; will I make it to the top of the sand dune? Is my voice good enough to sing the Ma’a Salama song? Should I sleep or should I play card games with these people that I just met? Wait… what do you mean there is a chance that I will never see these people again?

Class of 2020, the past 4 years have been an absolute pleasure. At this moment in history where we are flooded with uncertainty and doubt, we must gather in spirit to celebrate our strength and resilience. Completing the past 4 years and in these circumstances was not an easy task, but we kept going and we did. Just like 4 years ago, with all the distress and fear our unknown future brings me, I find immense comfort in the thought of you affording me that pleasure again as we keep going and taking it all in together.

Academic Heraldry The caps, gowns, and hoods worn today by participants in these Commencement exercises follow the tradition of the attire of teachers and students in the Middle Ages.

Those who have earned the bachelor’s degree wear a gown with semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back; the gown is also distinguished by long, pointed sleeves. The holders of the master’s degree wear a similar gown, but the sleeve is square and closed at the end. Bachelor’s and master’s degree recipients wear the traditional square mortarboard with black tassel. Honors Scholars, baccalaureate degree recipients who have earned a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average based on a minimum of 30 graded credits, wear a distinctive gold tassel adorned with the New York University Honors Scholar emblem in cloisonné.

Those possessing the doctoral degree wear gowns with broad velvet panels down the front. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color of the field of learning represented by the degree.

Much of the color and meaning of the costumes is found in the hoods worn by holders of doctoral and master’s degrees. These are silk-lined with the color or colors of the institution conferring the degree.

Honors

New York University Honors Scholars The New York University Honors Scholar award (which is also known as the Founders’ Day Award at NYU’s Washington Square campus) is given to the top 40 percent of students in the graduating class. These students have emerged as exceptional scholars in NYU Abu Dhabi’s highly selective and competitive academic community. University Honors Scholars wear a golden tassel in place of the standard tassel during Commencement.

Phi Beta Kappa As a part of New York University, NYU Abu Dhabi’s top students are considered for membership in NYU’s chapter of The Phi Beta Kappa Society, the oldest academic honor society in the United States. Membership in Phi Beta Kappa shows commitment to the liberal arts and sciences, and to freedom of inquiry and expression. Weight is given to the breadth and depth of the student’s study in the liberal arts, and he or she is required to complete coursework in certain specified areas as well as exhibit good moral character. The final selection for membership is by a committee of faculty in New York who are themselves members of Phi Beta Kappa chapters.

Graduation Honors NYU Abu Dhabi, following the practice of US colleges and universities, awards honors based on the cumulative grade point average at the time of graduation. Summa cum laude (highest honors) is awarded to the top 5 percent of students within each division. Magna cum laude (high honors) is awarded to the next 10 percent of students within each division. Cum laude (honors) is awarded to the next 15 percent of students within each division. As final grade point averages were not available at the time of printing, these awards will be announced at a later date.
