John W. Sterling. Lawyer, Dies on A Fishing Trip Well - Known Counsellor Succumbs to Heart Disease in Canada Rockefeller Adviser Firm of Which He Was Senior Member Defended Henry Ward Beecher .lohn \V. He was in his usual health when he departed for his annual salmon fish- ing vacation on Saturday, June 13, and letters that ho wrote as recently as Thursday night were received yester¬ day morning at his office in the Na¬ tional City Hank building. It had been Mr, Sterling's custom for many years to visit Lord Mount Stephen's castle and preserves on the Metapedia Uiver. Rich, vice-president oi mat institution, and S. M. Swenson. The news of Mr. Sterling's death came yesterday in a dispatch sent by Percy Rockefeller to Mr. Sterling's law partner, .lohn A. Garver, Mr. Sterling's body will ar¬ rive Monday night, and the funeral ser¬ vices will be on Tuesday. Famed as an Organizer Although probably one of the most widely known lawyers because of his prominence in connection with men of large affairs and corporations, Mr. .Ster¬ ling had not appeared as an advocate in court for many years. Me was a man of remarkable ability ns an organizer. Ho was executor and a trustee of many large estates. Among these were the estates of the late 11. 11. Rogers, Lord Strathcona, William L. Scott, prominent in the affairs of the Erie Railroad; Charles J. Osborn, Matthew C, P. Bor- den and James Stillman, chairman of the board of the National City Rank. For many years he was the confidential adviser of the late James J. Hill and, up to his death, of William Rockefeller. It was through Mr. Sterling and James Stillman that George B. Cortelyou be¬ came president of the Consolidated Gas Company of New York ten years ago. | Graduate of Yale Mr, Sterling was born in Stratford, Conn., on May 14, 184-1. He was the son of Captain John William Sterling and Catherine Tomlinson Plant Stci-i ling. His father, when lie retired from the sea, had commanded some of the linest clipper ships plying between this country and China and South American ports. John W. Sterling i was graduated from Stratford Acad¬ emy as its valedictorian and entered I Yale College. He was awarded one of the Townsend prizes by his election to the honorary fraternity of Hhi Heta Kappa. He was graduated from Yale in 18i)4 with high honors. Yale, in 1803, conferred upon him the honorary degree of LL. D. Mr. Sterling was a profound student of English literature and history under Professor Noah Por¬ ter. He entered Columbia College Law School and was graduated as valedic¬ torian in 1867. 0 He entered the law office of David Dudley Field as a clerk, and left it, in May, 1808, to become managing clerk for another lnw partnership, but at the end of a year he returned to become a partner of Field & Shear¬ man. Mr. Field retired in 187I5, and the firm became Shearman & Sterling, of which Thomas G. Shearman, who be¬ came prominent as a negro emanci- pator, was the senior partner. It was the firm of Shearman & Sterling that defended the Rev. Henry Ward Heecher in the suit brought by Theo¬ dore Tilton. That controversy lasted two years. Y., which cost more than $500,00(1 This building was con¬ structed under Mr. Sterling's personal supervision. Bunnell, a widow, both of whom live in Strat¬ ford, i Forger Sent to Prison Judge Gives Man Ten Years for Using Another's Name Emil Erick, formerly a foreman at the North Beach shipyard, was sen¬ tenced to ten years in Sing Sing prison yesterday by Judge Smith, in the Queen's County Court. He had been convicted on a charge of forgery. The evidence showed that he had drawn a check to himself and signed the name of E. Sanders to it. When the check reached the Queens County Trust Com¬ pany it was found to be worthless. Erick, the police learned, served terms at Sing Sing and at the New Jersey State Prison for similar offences. -.-.- Fall From Hotel Window "Nightmare," Says Victim A man registered at the Hotel Gerard as Edward A. Wells, of Pasadena, Cal., plunged earlv vesterday morning from the window of his room on the second floor to West Forty-fourth Street be¬ low. His skull was fractured and he was taken to Polyclinic Hospital. He told the police that he must have had! a nightmare. Frederick Costello, of 102 West' Forty-fourth Street, declared that! Martin; former member of the Repub¬ lican National Committee, wealthy bunker ami one of Virginia's most. prominent resilient», died at his home here this morning;. He was sixty yearn old. / Mr. Martin entered política when he was elected clerk of Norfolk County, a position he held for more than thirty years. He served as delegate to the Republican national conventions of 1896, 1900 and 1904, and was delegate- at-large in 190K and 1912. When the Jamestown Exposition w.is threatened with financial failure in October, 1907, he was chosen as director general, and by his able management paid all debts and saved the enterprise from bank¬ ruptcy. General Joseph Martin, Mr. Martin's great-grandfather, served with dis¬ tinction in the early Indian wars and in the Revolution. Colonel James G. Martin, his father, fought in the war of 1812. "Granny" MacWilliams Dead Mrs. Mary C. MacWilliams. of 201 Stockton Street, Brooklyn, who had been "Cranny" MacWilliams to the neighborhood longer than her oldest, neighbor could remember, died on Fri- day in Kings County Hospital.
