Cyprus Oil and Gas Association (COGA) are hosts to the venture and we extend our thanks to Andy Varoshiotis, CEO and his team for coordinating the visit by our LNG experts. The LNG Train the Trainers program aims to assist participants to learn and train others in all facets of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry. This program is related and compatible with Registered Gas Distribution Professional (RGDP), Certified Gas Transmission Professional (CGTP), Level II - LNG Plant Operator Training and Level II LNG Shipping and Cargo Handling addressing three major building links of the LNG chain: liquefaction plant, transport ships, and receiving terminal. Please visit our website Training section www.iems-uk.com/training to explore further details of the LNG Level II program that we currently offer and consider dates for forthcoming programs in Cyprus, Dubai, South Africa, Singapore and the UK. As we reported in our March newsletter the LNG sector global LNG demand has risen by an estimated 7.6% per year over the same period, almost three times faster than global natural gas demand. Our program launch also coincides with the breaking news below regarding first LNG passenger vessel operating on the Mediterranean. The ferry Abel Matutes, built in Barreras shipyard, has recently been retrofitted with a LNG storage tank and an auxiliary LNG-powered Rolls-Royce engine - an initiative Baleària says will result in an estimated annual reduction of about 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, more than 60 tonnes of nitrogen oxide (NOx), and 6 tonnes of sulphur oxide (Sox). The ferry, which measures 190 meters in length, has a capacity of 900 people and 2,235 linear meters of wheeled cargo. LNG has the possibility to replace HFO and other marine fuels as the main fuel for commercial shipping. The main benefit with LNG as fuel for ships is that it may improve the environmental performance of shipping without a significant cost increase. Reduced maintenance costs and better work environment for crew are further tangible benefits that accrue from the switch. This course is fully booked, however please keep an eye on our website and social media pages for updates.

IEMS-UK Visits Tunisia 27-30 March 2017IEMS has a long association with North Africa with clear contribution to the development of national strategies for Oil Spill preparedness, response and recovery and the funding and establishment of Environmental Action Centre(s). Our centres are designed to offer total integrated services, reducing costs through service provision of interrelated activities.

The perfect location - Whilst Tunisia is not the largest oil producing state in the region, the countries burgeoning activity is highlighted in the number of offshore and onshore production concessions, offshore exploration permits, tanker terminals, commercial & leisure ports, fishing ports and exquisite bathing and touristic zones. Tunisia is ideally located to service the environmental protection and waste treatment needs beyond its own coastline to neighbouring Mediterranean countries.

The fact that the country has trade agreements with nearby regions including the EU and Turkey significantly enhances Tunisia’s standing on the world stage.

IEMS-UK official visit was facilitated by Houcine Mejri, Director of MOIG. Through Houcine’s strong network of contacts (friends) we had the great pleasure of meeting with senior representatives from a wide array of world class oil, gas and chemical production and service companies.

Our grateful thanks is extended to those executives and senior managers in ETAP, Dragon Oil, Shell Upstream Tunisia, APO, TPS, PA RESOURCES, MARETAP, ECUMED, NUMHYD, ENI Tunisia, STIR, Medco Energi and SNPD).

We very much look forward to working with Tunisian businesses to add value, increase profitability and assist in the development of Tunisia’s rich talent pipeline.

EGYPT – EGYPTIAN ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS AGENCY (EEAA) – AUDITSThe Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency is currently auditing the Sharm El Sheikh Tier II response centre owned by EEAA and Managed by IEMS.

The practises of EEAA in the audits are both rigorous and beneficial to all stakeholders, we at IEMS are certainly kept on our toes. This centre is the largest Tier II oil spill response centre in the region. The centre is truly a credit to EEAA and the teams managing it.

In general the audit assess the overall capacity through:

ÞÞ Availability and knowledge of Contingency plans within the centres coverage area.

ÞÞ Familiarisation and application of the centres procedures

ÞÞ Training and drills with the details of plans and procedure and, in particular the Centre Manager and Team Leaders.

ÞÞ Centres program of inspection and maintenance for equipment and infrastructure in accordance with the annual operations plan.

ÞÞ Incident Responses undertaken by the centre in accordance to the actions taken prevent further environmental damage (lessons learned)

EEAA firmly believe that a document review alone is a misleading indicator of emergency preparedness and must be backed up by site inspection.

The results of the EEAA audits provide several important indicators of emergency preparedness at the national level.

SEA TRIALS – SOUTH AFRICACaptain John Martin IEMS-Africa Marine Director trials a new Damen Shipyards Cape Town-built ‘Sea Axe’ FCS5009 vessel off the Coast of South Africa.

The new vessels proved to be fast and efficient, comfortable and versatile. Since the eighties, Damen and Delft University of Technology have cooperated on a research programme aimed at improving the sea keeping characteristics of high speed vessels. This cooperation produced the “Enlarged Ship Concept” on which the highly successful Stan Patrol 4207 and 4708 are based. The development of the ‘Axe Bow Concept’

followed; a hull shape with unparalleled sea keeping characteristics. Using this design innovation, Damen developed the ‘Sea Axe’ Patrol Boats and Fast Crew Suppliers.

I am proud to be part of the trial team of engineers and mariners, the data we collected along with the experience of the journey clearly proves that DAMEN have produced such a versatile vessel that is in a class of its own. Well done DAMEN Shipyards Cape Town - another South African built vessel that is beneficial to South Africa and the international community.

For further information on the vessel and the sea trails please contact Patrick Kamerman - Hub Manager - Damen Services Cape Town - [email protected] or Greg Walker Director IEMS-Africa [email protected]
