We used to gallop into each year, but Father Timeforever aware of our dwindling numbers, has decreed atrot for the lucky few, a walk for the majority of our ilkwhilst the remainder will be obliged to 'stand-by theirhorses.' and patiently wait for the final bugle call. For those privileged few who recently stood on paradefor the five hundred and seventy six page 'Blue and OldGold' presentation we can assure one and all it is abook well worth its weight in old gold; somewhere in theregion of two kg's! It is therefore best perused from thecomfort of a coffee table with the hope that recipientshave at least three years petrol still in the think-tankcoupled with pretty good eyesight! If amongst the hundreds of photograph on display, you fail to catch sight of yourcake hole, then best consider contacting Legal Aid as the likes of our HonoredSecretary wisely answered the Editors' call for exactly this reason, as did a numberof wise ex-members, so please do not take umbrage if you are not mentioned -orphotographed- in dispatches. Draw a little inspiration from the strong likelihood yourname should be highlighted in the closing pages of the numerical Nominal Roll! Two problems though. One Big, One Small. The Small One first. No page(s)reflecting a chronological listing of names, short history of, and photographs of theCommissioners of the British South Africa Police who served this Force with greatdistinction and who achieved the highest honour to be bestowed upon a Rhodesianpoliceman, are in evidence. An oversight.? A pity. Please take careful note of a true story which involves a Commissioner of Policeand a well known police constable. The Force musketry championships were taking place and the commissioner waspresent when the gentleman concerned (recently demoted from Sargent toConstable) approached him and commented that they both had something incommon. The commissioner gently inquired what that could be, to which DennisCastell-Castell replied, 'We have both gone as far as we can in this police force.'This brings us to the One Big Problem. Under the Chapter 'Characters - good, bad, indifferent' someone is strangely missing. Reference is made to the Index. Again thesame result. A second oversight? Surely not! That 'someone' is one of the most esteemed members of the Western Cape BSAPRegimental Association. Our great grandchildren need be suitably tutored to keepnote of obituary columns as this person will bloody-welloutlive the lot of us, and they will need to represent their long gone family at DaveBlacker's funeral pyre in the distant future.I must keep a cool head as this man is a legend that no Editor/Author/Whatever-you-like can overlook. Those ex-members who had the wonderful opportunity ofworking with and meeting Dave have only the greatest respect for him, and willnever forget this fast-talking monster-prankster who often in crime relatedinvestigations flew damn close to the howling winds which would have destroyedmost of us as Dave still remains the fastest-talker in the West; a gift that saved his

hide, and numerous other members too, as this is one man who will never drop youin the Poo. It is high time we pay honour to 'our' Irishman in the W.C.OUTPOST asthis is an act of 'Ripley's' by the big book guru's who overlooked a great character! Iam happy to take any flake from any source!A little spoon of politics to the mix can do no harm, and it is of interest to notePresident Jacob Zuma's first State visit to Britain will take place on 3 March wherehe is due to take a 'pram'/carraige' ride with Queen Elizabeth to BuckinghamPalace. One wonders what reception he will get from the English public, more sothe Press; and what his five wife's, two fiancees and twenty children, plus his hugesexual appetite which he will need to feed overseas?. Big question is what areLizzie and Jake going to talk about? He better we well prepared as the Queen is notone to dilly-dally around, and will, if the occasion demands, end the tour with hercustomary dismissal by simply saying "I am not AMUZ'd" If you cannot readbackwards now is the time to start learning S.A.History!Last but not least a huge words of thanks to a wonderfully enterprisingCOMMITTEE who have absolutely exceeded themselves. All three functions held in2009 can be considered a huge success with a special word of thanks to every manand woman who worked and lived in the old country by gracing the Regiment withtheir presence, and helped to make it such a rewarding year for our Association inthe Western Cape.To this end, taking into consideration our numbers are now dwindling and fading, and appreciating the cost of living is spiralling to heights sometimes beyond familyfinancial forecasts successfully planned years before, we are now acutely aware ofdiverse difficulties experienced by those who form part of our diminishingRhodesian circle of family, colleagues, and friends here in the Western Cape aswell as those folk living in outlying 'dorpies' where leading a normal life hassuddenly crashed out of control due to hidden municipal agenda's and a risingcrime rate bolstered by the influx of displaced persons who flood into a societyunprepared to accommodate change, leading to high crime and low standardswhich can adversely impact on your own living choices.A BSAP trauma counselling/goodwill team is being assembled to assist those of uswho are in need, and will be fully operational by the time you receive your nextOUTPOST with contactable names/numbers of volunteer counsellors who willhandle all matters in the strictest of confidence.Warm Wishes, and to you all a very special Rhodesian Blessing.Tony.

NB. I have one, small niggling problem. How the Hell can the Soccer World CupOrganisers, as retarded as most of their Coaches and Players come across on theBig Screen -crawling, rolling, gestating, masturbating, screaming and howling- forone minute say ' I WAS THERE' This is surely a copyright infringement of whatDave Blacker so aptly penned in 1984 which regrettably found no place in thepages of BLUE and OLD GOLD. Don't speak to me, speak to my Lawyer' Checkthis on back windows of most cars exiting Hangover Park! Enough said.

Rhino – Poached to Order via Chinese middle men in Zim and SA

A shocking undercover journey reveals that a poaching cartel known as'The Crocodile Gang', led by Zimbabwe's Emmerson Mnangagwa, isslaughtering rhinos and elephants to fulfill 'requests' for horn and ivory.

I was given anunprecedented insight into the sheer scale of the operation

Dubbed the Crocodile Gang, this cartel - whose existence can be revealed bythe Mail today - is behind the 'industrial-scale slaughter' of black rhinos, prompting warnings that the species will be hunted to extinction in the regionwithin two years.

Also referred to as“The Butcher of Matabeleland”, he is the architect of Zimbabwe's terrifying statesecurity apparatus, creator of Zimbabwe's Central Intelligence Office (CIO) -and rumored to be next in line for president after Mugabe.Probably risking his life, Andrew Malone, a writer for The UK's Daily Mail, reports that he went undercover, posing as an overseas buyer of illegal rhinohorn to dig deeper into the widespread rhino massacre that stands to wipe outan entire species. What he reveals is an appalling world of cruelty, corruption, death threats - and the consequences suffered by those who have tried tospeak out.

Posing as an overseas buyer of illegal rhino horn,- and the vast

sums involved. After making contact with the ivory cartel through anintermediary, we were instructed to drive 400 miles south-west of Harare andtelephone a number using a pre-arranged codeword. There, after moreelaborate instructions, we were told to drive to a remote location inMatabeleland, near the border with South Africa and Botswana.Mr. Malone then describes meeting with a man named “Gerald” - who operateswith members of Zimbabwe's Central Intelligence Office (CIO). Gerald has justreturned from a “successful” rhino hunt.

After first shooting the rhino in the lungs, Gerald and his men pursue thewounded rhino for 12 hours. When the wounded rhino lay down to rest at awatering hole, Gerald and his men shot the rhino six times, and then hacked thehorns from the animal's face using the large, machete-like knives calledpangas.Gerald had sold the horns two days before our meeting. When I told him I wouldpay an even higher price, his eyes narrowed. He said. 'I will contact you thenext time.'

And the “godfather” of the poaching cartel is said to be EmmersonMnangagwa - known by locals now as “The Crocodile.”

The meeting

The rhino was being killed to order: a Chinese buyer had offered to pay £3,200per kilo of rhino horn. 'It wasn't easy - there is no cover because it's winter andthe animal kept seeing us by the moonlight and running away,' he told me.

The case of the disappearing docket

A common thread

Earlier this month, the involvement of Mnangagwa and Webster Shamu,Zimbabwe's media and information minister, came into the spotlight when apolice officer stopped a Chinese man at roadblock - and was found to becarrying six rhino horns, still bloody. The Chinese man implicated Mnangagwa and Webster Shamu.Unfortunately,

While almost every otherwhite landowner has been driven from his property by Mugabe's thugs, Davy …has prospered. According to undercoverwildlife investigators, the Chinese businessman had paid an additional £2,000for safe passage through the airport. The X-ray operator was arrested andthrown in jail for threatening to bring the crime to light.Mr. Malone also notes that a ton of ivory was

Earlier this month, an illegal shipment of elephant tusks and rhino horn wasseized at the Jomo Kenyatta Airport. Blood on the ivory and horns confirmedthat the elephants and rhinos had recently been killed.. The animal parts werehidden in coffins, and were en route to Laos. Hi Andrew,

The attached pic was put into RWW by Peter greenway of Oz - his father is

first left back row, Tpr No 2941. As He retired in 1946 as an Insp this pic,

was probably taken in the late 1920s at Sinoia.

He appealed for anyone to identify the other members of the group.

I suggested we put it on our site, and in yr pic gallery if you wish.

He said he has other pics which I have asked him to send, when rec,d I will

fwd.

Regards,

Brian.

Greetings Lawrie

I continue to read your Outpost with interest and send greetings to all who I

have worked with who are members of your association.

There is little doubt in my mind that the mystery man is my good fried Gilly

Potter and if I not mistaken the photo was taken at JOC Mtoko where Gilly

and I shared the role of Sunray Acorn for quite a long time during the

hostilities - one month in one month out !!!!

Give him my best wishes.

Dear Lawrie,

This was forwarded to me the other day and I thought, if you have not seen

it before, you might want to include it in the Outpost. Anyone ever

stationed in Bulawayo will recognize all the places mentioned. Thanks for

the Outpost, I always look forward to and really enjoy each edition. I

enjoyed being able to attend the annual dinner this year, the first for a very

long time. The only problem is that it made me realize how old we are all

getting! In fact, I have just realized that in four days time it will be 50 years

since I signed on the dotted line at PGHQ (12 Squad of '59)– wow! I will

also be finishing up here at the Green Point Stadium in a few days time

after almost two years, so this e-mail address will cease to be. It really is a

magnificent building and Cape Town can be very proud of it. I don't know

what next year will bring, so will have to wait and see. Wishing you a

blessed and happy Christmas and New Year, God bless you and yours.

Kind regards,

I had a rush of blood earlier in the year and decided to take up freefall

decided that I liked the 'rush'.

So I signed on for a freefall (AFF) course and have so far done 2 training

absolutely terrified on my first jump

but settled down a lot more on the second jump. I hope to complete the

Other than that, still trying to keep fit and avoid the ravages of time.

Thanks for the info. This one is very close to home. Peter was of course

4332 and I was 4333. We first met each other in Palestine in 1947 when

Peter was a member of the Palestine Police (mounted section ) and I was

serving with the 4/7 Royal Dragoon Guards of the British Army. We met up

entirely unexpectedly in Depot as members of 6/48 in November 1948 ! I

remember he was the "Leader of the Ride" on the strength of his PP

experience, riding the smallest horse in Depot - grey of about 10 hands(?).

I rarely saw him again during our service, as I went off to the District and

then CID, but I did see him in South Africa on a couple of occasion s when

he visited Cape Town.

It is all very saddening - although at 82 and in good health I hate moving up

to become "senior troop" .

Rhodesia Herald circa 1930. Author unknown.

The towering and embattled clouds, red castles in the sky,Had all begun a-drooping down upon the hills to lie.I stood with one companion, a true Rhodesian he,

Whose face lit up to see the sun's last dying ecstasy. The look upon his face was such as caused a man to think,But all the true Rhodesian said was: "Gosh, I need a drink !"

Like a sign before the portal of some tavern in the clouds,The crescent moon was riding through its still-emblazoned shrouds.

The wind was soft and sweetened by the scents of veld at dusk; The night was but a new-born babe, the day was just a husk.

The true Rhodesian raised his head, he said :"My tonsils shrink,The day is done. I say, old boy, why don't we have a drink ?"

I introduced him to a girl whose face was like a flower,Who gentle was as any dove in any sylvan bower,

Whose lips were rose's petals red, a brim with maiden dew,Whose figure C.B. Cochran would admire as much as you,

Whose melting glance a message gave :"I hope our souls will link;"But the true Rhodesian turned away and said : "I need a drink".

When saintly Peter bars the way to Paradise above,To the nectar of the gods and to the Heavenly hours' love,

When all the whiskey's poured and drunk, when all the beer has fled,When all the sundown times have passed, with clouds of gold and red;

I wonder if Rhodesians true (as through the door they slink)Will turn to Saintly Peter and say: "Now, what about that drink?"

TRAUMA COUNSELLING - A NEW INNOVATION

'One of the characteristics of the British South Africa Police is that of fellowship– a bond which exists between present and past members of the Force, and abond which is not broken by death. So we hold in honoured and undyingmemory all our comrades – both European and African – who have passed on,their duty well done, and it has been our wish to commemorate in a lastingand tangible form all those who have died, this whether their deaths have takenplace whilst serving in our ranks, or after they have left us.'

Arthur Selwyn Hickman.'July, 1953. Salisbury, Rhodesia.

Ex. Commissioner of the British South Africa Police

Many years have passed, and today the Western Cape Association hasbecome concerned about the plight of ex-members and their families who areexperiencing diverse forms of difficulty in their everyday lives.

Situations as these take on many masks which we hope to identify with asthose who served in Rhodesia, supported by their families as well as friends, could well be experiencing different shades of trauma which manifests itself in ahost of disguises; often too frightening to contemplate for the victim in themiddle of an ocean of fear and uncertainty.

I am a member of an existing volunteer trauma counselling unit based at SAPSMuizenberg we deal mainly with victims of crime, but over a prolonged periodhave supported folk who are clouded with depression, abuse in varying formsranging from domestic violence to substance and drug dependency, financialdifficulties, home eviction, suicidal expression, and just about all we never gavea thought about in the old country! As an ex-member driving a dedicated teamof specialist volunteers –we form part of the existing committee- please acceptthat this newly established volunteer counselling team is available 24/7 to assistYOU. Ex-members, reservists, family, friends, are all part of this service whichhandles every matter in total confidence insofar as your personal lives andproblems are concerned.

Counselling can be arranged via your BSAP team at SAPS Muizenberg wherewe have a stunning Comfort Room, or at a location –your home is acceptable-of your choice.

The Western Cape Association are assembling a programme to assist in workrelated issues, accommodation, financial support, referred counselling inrespect of debt and marriage guidance, and other related problems which ispresently under scrutiny

Di and I last visited Zimbabwe some ten years ago in 1999 and based upon thereports we receive in South Africa one does not really know what to expect. Wewere perhaps fortunate not to see or hear anything about the farm invasionswhich apparently still continue.

We flew into the new Airport at Harare and was impressed by the gleamingglass and marble floors, a good first impression. However joining the queue fora visa (I still hold a British Passport) was somewhat frustrating as everybodyelse sailed through in about 5 minutes. About 45 minutes later and US$55lighter in pocket I got through.

Next impression driving from the Airport was how seedy and run down theplace was looking. The roads and especially the intersection have manypotholes. The traffic lights are so dim that one has to look very carefully to seewhat colour they are. Some work and some do not, and even taking the powercuts into consideration entering an intersection is something of a lottery. Even ifit green for you make sure the traffic is stopping as it may not be red on theother side.

The power cuts continue on an intermittent basis and most houses havegenerators as a back up. Nobody I knew ever watches the ZBC Television andmany have Sky News etc.

Probably the biggest change recently has been the introduction of the US$which has replaced the ludicrous Trillions and Zillion Zim dollar notes. Thismeasure has ensured the shops are full of goods and if one can afford itvirtually anything is available. This has made a huge difference to the attitudeof the population. After pretty severe depression a year ago they are now quiteupbeat and optimistic about the future. Apparently the street traders were themain people behind the enforced change. They will also fight tooth and nail tokeep the US$. Pensioners of course still have a major problem.

One snag is that they have no small change. You can end up at bigger storeswith a sucker or a bic pen to make up to the amount you have spent. In smallerplaces where one is known they are prepared to mark on the till slip what isowing and it can be claimed on the next visit.

Driving around superficially little has changed, not many new buildings, and thepopulation affable and friendly. However as mentioned previously take extremecare at intersections.

The people we were staying with took us to a performance of Handel's Messiahon the Friday evening at Nazareth House. This I hasten to add is not my normal

type of Friday night out. However a choir of about 50 and a visiting German altoperformed exceeding well and shows the cultural side of the old city is stillintact.

After the show we went to a Chinese Restaurant in Chisipete which wasextremely good and by our standards pretty cheap. A meal for four plus drinksjust over R200, not bad at all.

After three days of to our main destination a farm at Shangani/Fort Rixon.Enroute about three Police Road blocks and checks but all very low key and noproblem.Police reasonable polite as are checking drivers licenses in the main. Inoted shorts appear to have disappeared from the Uniform and long trousers orRiot Kit was the main form of dress.

A new innovation is Tolls. There were at least two between Harare and Gwerueach costing one US$. The toll consists of a drum covering half the road and abloke wandering out with some tickets. In wet weather they disappear as theyhave no shelter. There are further Tolls and road blocks between Gweru andBulawayo.

Staying on a farm or ranch, the owners whom we have known for nearly 60years was like turning the clock back many years. The owner has lost somefarms in the area but has reached an accord with the local "Settlers" as they arenow called and hopefully will remain untouched. Many areas remainuncultivated (If there is such a word) and the bush is really looking quitesplendid. They had some 12 inches of rain by mid December which auguredwell for a good season.

A trip to Bulawayo brought back many memories and again superficially littlehas changed. Far less traffic than Harare and the roads in better condition, probably cleaner and in many areas the locals have banded together and filledin the potholes. I was told even the mayor was physically involved in thisproject.

I met Ken McDonald who seems fit and well and is running a craft shop. I alsomet up with a squad mate of mine Derek Marshall 5865 for a spot of lunch.Interesting is that the bill was in US$ or in Rand and we gathered Bulawayouses the Rand far more than Harare. We only spent a few hours in Bulawayoand then back to Shangani.

The only other Police chap we met up with was Peter Cahill 89-- whom I did notknow before . Peter is farming in the Fort Rixon area down towards the Pioneerblock. Driving to his farm was quite a mission as the heavens opened, thunderand lightening all the way. One tends to forget how slippery, muddy and reallybad some dirt roads are. As I was in a borrowed vehicle I had to be exceedingly

cautious but at times had to get into 4 wheel drive.

We flew back from Bulawayo where the old airport seems to have beenabandoned and you depart from a hanger. I gather this was a move about 5years ago pending the building of the new Airport, however no progress seemsto have been made.!!

The flight back to OR Tambo by Airlink was excellent with much better food thanon SAA. (Since then of course some of their planes have been grounded.)

Overall an excellent holiday but as indicated most of it miles from anywhere ona large ranch. It was great to see the positive attitude of most people and to behonest far better than we expected.

Kind regards,

A member of Parliament to Disraeli: "Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of someunspeakable disease.""That depends, Sir," said Disraeli, "whether I embrace your policies or your mistress."

I was called out at 11.00 pm on the 24th December, 1959, and soon got on the trailof Africa Male Adult “Uta”. It was in the Inyati District. UTA had murdered aEuropean farmer.

We tracked him for 6 days at an average of 25 miles a day. Eventually in the lateafternoon of 31st December, we came upon UTA – he had shot himself with thestolen rifle, a .375 magnum.

He had been exhausted and we later found out that he had been suffering fromPleurasy and Pneumonia. It had been very cold at night and ofcourse he did nothave the comfort of blankets like we did.

Yesterday I was at my local CO-OP buying a large bag of Purina dog food for myloyal pet and was in the checkout queue when a woman behind me asked if I hada dog.

What did she think I had, an elephant? So, since I'm retired and have little to do,on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Dietagain. I added that I probably shouldn't,because I ended up in hospital last time, but that I'd lost 2 stonesbefore I woke up in intensive care with tubes coming out of most of my orifices andIVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way thatit works is to load your pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or twoevery time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and Iwas going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in queuewas now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified, she asked me if I ended up in intensive care because thedog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff anIrish Setter's arse and a car hit us both.I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing sohard.

I'm now banned from the Co-op.

Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the world tothink of daft things to say.

IRISH GATHERING - 5th September 2009The Eighth Annual Irish gathering was held on Saturday 5th September at theusual excellent venue, Sandy Stokes’ home near Clonmel, Ireland. Onceagain, much thanks to Sandy. The weather was good, although cloudy and alittle cool and so full use could be made of the lovely grounds. Theconservatory was decorated by four old Rhodesian flags presented tothe group by 4061 Tpr Robert Slade. Thanks, Bob.Thirty-eight people attended, of whom twelve alone were bussed down fromthe North by stalwart Tom Meekin. Several old Rhodesian guests attended, including Sandy’s old bank manager, Geoff Wood, from Chipinga many yearsago. An excellent lunch was served, including boerewors, testimony to thehard work and dedication of many of the ladies. Many thanks for contributingto the success of the event. A new face this year was that of Biff Way, well-known raconteur. He acted as auctioneer of Eddie Matchett’s painting ofa Mounted Trooper and it was like the Tobacco Sales floor. He also presentedan African Constable skit which was much appreciated. Another innovationthis year was a Raffle, which was organised, and prizes donated, by MarieBerry and Katherine Flynn, while Biff did the ticket selling. The raffle, somedonations, and the event overall brought in enough to enable the Group tomake a donation of £200 to Association Funds. Regimental Association Dinner - London - 25th September 2009

The 62nd Annual Regimental Dinner took place in the Carisbrooke Hall at theVictory Services Club, London on Friday 25th September 2009. Members andguests started to gather at around 6.00pm with the trumpet call for dinnersounding at 7.30pm. Chairman, Peter Phillips, got things underway bywelcoming Dr Sue Onslow (Guest Speaker), Peter Petter- Bowyer (RhodAF)and Nighean Darlaston (NRP Association) together with those membersattending from overseas with special mention of 3708 Bill Crabtree, over fromSouth Africa, looking very well at 92 years old. He then read out greetingsand best wishes from Her Majesty the Queen, General the Lord MichaelWalker (Patron), Rhodesian Army Association and the Natal Branch of theAssociation. After the loyal toast, 70 members and guests sat down to a very enjoyablemeal. Following the customary short break, Peter introduced our guestspeaker, Dr Sue Onslow, Research Fellow and Lecturer War Studies, KingsCollege. Sue, having lived and worked in South Africa and Kenya, gave aninsight into her work, especially her present project which has brought herface to face with many of our Members when recording their involvement andexperiences in the terrorist war leading up to the change in Government inRhodesia. Her speech was very well received. Tony Granger replied in hisusual eloquent manner. Once the speeches were over, Dennis Poole got theraffle under way with thehelp of Sue – the three main prizes being won by Mick York, Seamus Powerand Peter Lane – proceeds of the raffle, amounting to just over £1100.00, willgo to the Memorial Fund. A special word of thanks should be given to Denniswho has been running the raffle for many years - heis standing down this year and says he wants to give somebody else thechance to “rake” in the money!! (A volunteer would be welcome). Parry Jonesand Dan Hughes should also be thanked for the efficient organisation of thedinner. No report of the dinner would be complete without mention of theunfortunate accident that befell Bertie Cubitt whilst setting up the hall for thedinner – Bertie slipped from the stage and landed heavily on his hip. Thisnecessitated him being taken to hospital where he was detained, thusmissing the dinner, and having to have a hip replacement operation on thefollowing Monday. The good news is that Bertie is now making a goodrecovery at home. Those attending the dinner were: Sue Onslow (GuestSpeaker), Peter Petter-Bowyer (RhodAF), Nighean Darlaston (NRP Assoc),3708 Bill Crabtree (South Africa), 4158 Tim Weimer, 4278 John Balchin, 4503

The Australia branch continues to go from strength to strength if it can bejudged by the last luncheon on 12 September, when a most convivial timeseemed to be had by all.A very interesting talk was given by the Guest Speaker Col. Harry Harvey, former Director of Military Intelligence in Rhodesia. It brought back manymemories of past times, not always happy memories as it dealt with the bushwar years and, of course, we all lost friends and colleagues during that time;but it is such times that bring people closer together and it seemed to thatday.

The lunch was delicious plus all the fun ofa mammoth raffle. Perhaps it is thateveryone has got to know everybody andthere was an extremely happy and friendlyatmosphere. Those attending were:Col. Harry Harvey and his wife Bente,Mr. Alan Richardson JP President of theRSL Belmont and his wife Yvonne, 8260David Amm, 11556K PR Don and JoyceBulloch, 7682 Ian and Breda Calderwood, PR Pat and Moira Cane, 8617Doug Capper and guest Pete Van Aarde who is Editor of the Bundu Times,Vivienne Cordy Hedge widow of the late 4147 D. CHAIRMAN’S COMMENT2010! The year of expectations as the spectators of many nationspour into our country for the World Cup Soccer tournament. Soccer– the world s most popular sport! Who will win? What will theimpressions be of South Africa as a country and our ability to hostsuch an event? As a soccer enthusiast I pray all goes well. What canwe look forward to after the soccer tournament?Since the last Natal Outpost, the splendid 82nd edition featuring theladies of the BSAP, Christmas has come and gone and we hope it wasa joyful occasion for all in celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Mayit always be a public holiday on the South African calendar! By thetime this edition of the Outpost is published we will be well into2010 and on behalf of all on our committee we wish our members andfamilies a wonderful year.2009 was an eventful year. Again we witnessed the wonderfulsupport of members for others when the situation so demanded. Two incidents come immediately to mind, both at the Inchanga

Village, where firstly, the home of the daughter of a member wasburnt down when a gas heater caught alight and secondly, the homeof our Smudge and Shirley Smith was broken into and goods stolen.Fortunately, no one was hurt. The police follow-up investigation intothe housebreaking was such that we who served in the BSAP wouldwant to cry. It served to remind me of what we had going for us interms of policing efficiency, the Courts and indeed the civil service. The Association social functions continued throughout the year atthe Stations, such as Margate, Durban South, Hillcrest andInchanga. The Midlands Branch put on a number of wonderful socialgettogethers. The annual LUNCHES for the Natal and Midlands Branchwere very good indeed. Many thanks to all who make thesegatherings such a pleasure! In recent years, we have held our Annual General Meeting (AGM) inMay. It is at this meeting that members are appraised of thestanding of the Association and the election of a committee. Sadly, there are those who were in the BSAP and want nothing to do withthe Association.Whatever, their concerns may be, we will continue to do what we canto bring them back to being part of the Association. The term AGMtends to frighten some members, but we have been fortunate inhaving a reasonable turnout each year and committee members thathave continued to serve. The sports club that I am a member of hada rather novel way of electing their committee. Members received anemail asking if they were prepared to be on the committee and if so,stand as chairman/chairperson. A further question asked was, whoone would like to see on the committee and why?By the time the AGM came about the committee was „elected andthe meeting held simply to formalize that aspect of the agenda –then a very good social evening. Perhaps our Secretary Des will be intouch with you by email for your committee input along the linesdescribed above.I have served more than my “three in the BSAP”, so I will bestanding down from the committee. In so doing, many, many thanksto Malcolm, Des, Trevor, Ken, Denis and Val - a truly wonderfulcommittee. I believe that Associations such as ours will continue toflourish if our communication links with members are regularly maintained.

Excellent editions of the Natal Outpost have served not only to keepmembers informed, but have attracted outsiders to join. Emails linksand social functions serve greatly in maintaining contact and advisingus of friends who have passed away, and the behind the sceneadministration of our finances, communication with members onwelfare type matters are on goingHaving worked for another company for 19 years after the BSAP,one senses that very few organizations or companies have what wehave in terms of ongoing support and friendship and I know this willcontinue to the end.Nobby Clark

Christmas 2009

"money does not buy happiness but it can buy hamburgers and that'shappiness”

The research into the compiling of a nominal roll of all those whoserved in the BSAP Support Unit, the subsequent overwhelmingsupport received from ex members all over the World and theinteresting stories and photographs collected so far clearlyindicates the need for the History of The Black Boots to beofficially recorded and as a consequence this will happen. At presentwe have over 630 names on the roll and are in contact with about230 ex members. The co-operation from the various PoliceAssociations and other ex Rhodesian and Zimbabwean web sites hasbeen tremendous as they continue to spread the word on ourproject. We will keep interested parties advised of developments.

Just prior to Christmas a few of us "South Coasters" decided tocelebrate the festive season with a luncheon at SchoonersRestaurant at Umtentweni. The gathering was attended by Gerryand Colleen Powell,Bob and Kim Packer,Butch and Hilary VonHorsten,Andy and May Messina,Kevin Woods with partnerConnie,Barry Woan and Dave Callow. A great festive luncheon washad by all.
