    Pictures of the Month

    10th Anniversary Celebration

  • Ray’s Ramblings

S eptember heralds not only the onset of Spring, but also the start of a new year for Knysna Photographic Society.

With warmer weather and inspiring spring blooms,

we experience earlier sunrises, later sunsets and

longer hours that all conspire to make it easier to

get out here with a camera and be creative.

What seemed an interesting idea when it was first

mooted, the creation of “user groups”, has devel-

oped into something that, I suspect, will go down

as a landmark in the life of the Knysna Photo-

graphic Society. If you haven’t aligned yourself

with one of several groups, do yourself a favour

and do so without further delay. Sharing of ideas,

techniques and experiences with fellow photogra-

phers will, without a doubt, result in the greater

expertise and the opening of new avenues that

will benefit each and every participant over time.

L andscapes and Nature photographs current-ly dominate the landscape of photographs submitted at monthly meetings at KPS, while Trav-

el, Photojournalism and Street topics tend to be

somewhat neglected. It is rather axiomatic why

this is so, considering the natural beauty of the

area in which we are fortunate enough to live.

However, might it not be a good idea to shake off

the shackles of our comfort zones and tried some-

    thing different?

S everal topics about the basics of photog-raphy, specifically concerning the relation-ship between “shutter speed, depth of field and

aperture”, have crossed my desk in the past

weeks. Whilst these are basic concepts, there is no

perfect or ideal combination. Experimenting with

“different” combinations of the three may pro-

    duce some interesting results.

D o we, as a club, have too many catego-ries in which me embers are able to sub-mit photographs? There are currently 10 cate-

gories, most of which are well to very well sup-

    ported, while several are not.

The greater the number of categories that judg-

es are required to judge, the greater the num-

ber of judges potentially required and the great-

er the field of expertise necessary.

It is a reality that judges are not always comfort-

able judging certain categories, no more no less

than photographers tend to gravitate to a cate-

gory in which they either feel comfortable, or

    have developed a specific expertise.

Knowing in advance who the judges are at a

club meeting will sometimes help a photogra-

pher decide in which category, or categories, to

    submit photographs for judging.

    F ood for thought?

  • KPS 10th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

T his event promises to be the social highlight of the current year for KPS. Not only are we privileged to be witness to such an auspicious occasion, we will be able to share the occasion with several founding members of KPS. The organising committee have planned what can best be described as an event to remember at Kilzer’s in Knysna. Despite

not escaping damage in the recent fires that swept through the town, the restaurant was quick to re-open for business.

Please confirm to Leoni before the end of September that you plan to attend the dinner. The cost of the dinner is R160 per

head. Payment needs to be made during October.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING — AUGUST 2017

O nce again, a successful event that was well organised by Jacqui, at which all the achievers received recognition for their efforts during the previous 12 months, culminating in the election of office bears for the next 12 months and the usual fine fare presented by the catering staff of Knysna Golf Club.
