La Amistad On July 1, 1839, fifty-three Mende captives overtook the crew of La Amistad. Unable to return to Africa, these individuals were interned in New Haven, Connecticut, while a trial deciding their fate took on the crucial question of the relationship between humanity and the ownership of human beings in the Republic.
