These informal sessions would typically cover the following:

A general overview of your current role;

Your career journey so far;

The skills and training required;

What are the great things about the job and some of the challenges?

Are there any future changes within the field of work that are worth explaining?

If you are able to share your experiences in an informal environment to provide real insights into the world of work for our students, please contact the Careers Department for more information: [email protected] Due to the dry conditions and resulting cracking on parts of the oval surface, the Athletics Carnival will be postponed to a date in May where we will run the event in Bendigo, as per last year. I wish all our students every success for the Term ahead, success comes from hard work not good luck. All the best!

In the next couple of weeks there will be a system integration between CareMonkey and our main Student Administration System (SAS).

This will mean that all Medical Information that has been uploaded to CareMonkey will now override any previous medical information

that we have had in our SAS system

It is extremely important that the medical information on CareMonkey is accurate and up to date.

If you are experiencing any difficulty uploading any required document, i.e. Asthma Plans or related documents, please do not hesitate to

contact the College for assistance. We can scan documents for you and email them back for uploading.

UP TO DATE?

The Year 9 LINCS students presented their proposal portfolio to Leadership this week. You will read about their plans in this newsletter. LINCS stands for linking, initiating, networking and connecting. The work that they will be doing in aged-care facilities in the Kyneton area will make a genuine contribution to our community, as well as developing the students’ skills. The standard of the presentation was extremely high, so this is a project that we will follow in the newsletter throughout 2016. After a really fast Term One, we have now begun an eleven-week term. While that thought might seem daunting to some students, there will be lots happening in that time. NAPLAN testing occurs in May and information will soon be sent out to parents of students in Years 7 and 9 about the process. This newsletter is distributed in the middle of the Student Progress Interview (SPI) period. As teachers we greatly value the

opportunity to meet the parents of our students and we appreciate your support that is evident through your attendance.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN BEHAVIOUR AND LEARNING

As the person who has been responsible for overseeing the management of students for several years, both at Sacred Heart College Kyneton and in my previous school, I have often heard the comment that ‘boys will be boys’ or ‘girls are just like this at this age’. While there are elements of truth in these statements, and may at times explain some types of behaviour, it cannot always be an excuse.

As a school, our aim is to educate the whole student, both academically and socially, giving them the best opportunity for a great future, by assisting parents with training in appropriate behaviour. A calm, happy and productive classroom is one most conducive to learning and it is the connection between learning and behaviour that makes it an important aspect to be focused on. The relationship between students and their teacher plays a vital role in how students engage with their learning within the classroom environment. Classrooms have a rhythm, and when the rhythm is flowing and positive, teachers are able to teach and facilitate and students are able to learn.

For students to become effective, independent 21st century learners, responsible for their own learning, they need to be able to self-regulate their behaviour in order to gain the optimum learning experience from the classroom. Students who find behaving challenging can, over the course of a year, be academically up to 15-25 % behind the other students in that class. If this continued over two years, they may be up to 50% behind other students who have behaved appropriately. The dramatic example explains the strong connection between behaviour and learning, and the reason it needs to be emphasised from both school and home. As always, I am happy to discuss.

UNIFORM REMINDER From the commencement of Term 2 students are to be in full winter uniform. Girls skirts must be at knee length. Blazers are to be worn to and from school, and optional throughout the day. Please refer to the accompanying grid for clarification. All families have received a comprehensive uniform guide brochure. NAPLAN 2016 Notice for Parents and Students The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008. NAPLAN Dates for Year 7 and Year 9

NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy which are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australia children. It also provides valuable information that allows schools and governments to better target effort and support to help all students achieve their potential and acquire the basic skills to help them build successful and happy lives. All students are expected to participate in the tests. Students with a disability may qualify for reasonable adjustments that reflect the support normally provided to them in the classroom. Some students with very specific circumstances may be exempted from participating in the tests. For information about participation in NAPLAN, you can go to: http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support.html NAPLAN tests fundamental skills rather than specific content, and as such is not a test for which students can study or drill. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. The use of services by coaching providers is not recommended. An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish to use their child’s results to discuss progress with teachers. More information is available at www.nap.edu.au At Sacred Heart College teachers use NAPLAN data along with other forms of testing, both formal and informal, to ensure the educational needs of all students are met.

Parent Learning Walks at Sacred Heart College Due to the success of our ‘Learning Walks’ sessions in 2015, we will host two in Term 2, one on Tuesday 26 April and the other on Tuesday 31 May, both commencing at 9am. We warmly invite you to take part in this opportunity. ‘Learning Walks’ are designed to allow parents to learn more about what is happening in a day to day class at our College. In this session, parents will have the opportunity to gain a firsthand understanding of how the College works and how the students are learning. Prior to the ‘Walk’ commencing, the group will gather together to gain the context for the Learning Walks and what they might ‘see, feel, and hear’. After the visits the group will be asked to reflect on this session and share their observations with other participants. As a vibrant College community, we continue to develop and foster active partner-ships with our families as we work with you to support the growth and learning of our young people. This is a wonderful chance for families to come into the classrooms and experience learning in the world of our students today. If you are interested in being part of this session you can register your interest with Mrs Debbie Meldrum via email on [email protected] or call on 54211267

A contemporary school library must strive to allow for flexibility to provide learning opportunities for all students and learning styles. The Catherine McAuley Library & Learning Centre has been on something of an evolutionary journey over recent years and is no longer a repository for dusty old books. At a recently attended PL session the presenter strongly recommended the “Less is More” model and provided us with a number of ideas on how to best present our different collections to our staff and students. Over the coming months the library will be undergoing some refurbishment to better accommodate our IT staff and Pedagogical Leader. The Library webpage is also being updated to become a true online portal to our physical collections through the Library catalogue and our online subscriptions such as World Book Encyclopedia, Macquarie Dictionary and Clickview Online. The webpage will be categorised into Learning Areas with links specific to topics and assessments in future months. The Library Resources webpage can currently be accessed from home via SIMON and PAM or at http://oliver.shckyneton.catholic.edu.au. Student access details are required.

MUSIC NOTES - Mr Terry Carrick

Term Two is a very busy period for the Music Department. This Sunday, a number of our students are performing at a concert for MITCH (Music In The Central Highlands), starting at 2:30pm at Braemar College. Please come and support these wonderful young musicians in the local area. More information is available at www.mitch.org.au Our first big internal event for this term is our annual Music Trivia Night, which will take place Friday night, 29 April, starting at 7:00pm sharp in the Arthurson Atrium. This is traditionally a really fun night with a silent auction and plenty of games, jokes, musical facts and excellent prizes! Students are encouraged to assemble teams of between 3 and 12 people. The secret to success at these nights is diversity within the team, so people of all ages and backgrounds are most welcome! Entry is only $10 per head, and there are excellent prizes up for grabs. Cheating is not only acceptable, it’s encouraged (disclaimer: conditions apply, bring lots of gold coins). All proceeds go towards Friends Of the Music Program which provides assistance toward scholarships for Music students. So, please join us – bring dinner, drinks and nibblies for a fantastic night, but we do start right on 7, so please be here by 6:45 to claim a good table! We will also have a Silent Auction on the night with some EXCELLENT items up for grabs! More information on this event can be found at www.tinyurl.com/musictrivia16

Our Instrumental Music program is going along strongly. Learning an instrument at Sacred Heart focuses on three parts. Firstly, we have the actual lessons, where students learn the mechanics and musicianship of creating music on their instrument. Secondly, is performance - putting what they've learned in their lessons into context in a performance environment, in front of a small and very supportive audience. As such, all students enrolled in the Music program, are required to perform twice a year at our Instrumental Recital Evenings. The first of these will be held in Week 6, at 7pm on Tuesday 17 May. The third crucial element of learning Music at Sacred Heart, is making music with other people. As such, all students enrolled in the Music Program are required to regularly attend rehearsals for at least one College Ensem-bles. Students who do not learn Music at the College are also very welcome to participate in the Ensembles Program. Each ensemble rehearses weekly, and all ensembles (including class ensembles) are required to perform at our annual Ensembles Concert, which will be held at 7pm in the Theatre on Wednesday 15 June.

LINCs Program - Ms Alex Smith, Year 9 Level Leader

On 12 April, the LINCs class presented a proposal for our community project to the Leadership Forum Team. LINCs is a specialised program for some of the Year 9 students who are particularly applied learners. It focusses on linking, initiating, networking and connecting with the community through team building skills. This year, the LINCs class has decided to create garden beds for local aged care facilities. We are also going to be making recipe books that will be created with a Chef using the ingredients planted and grown in the garden beds. It is our idea to include recipes from the residents of the facilities to incorporate them in the process. The Leadership Forum Team were very impressed with what we presented to them and felt that our ideas were exciting.

‘Solving the Jigsaw’ Program and Pastoral Care in Years 7 & 8 - Mark Macdougall, Solving the Jigsaw facilitator Pastoral Care is an important aspect of school life and the personal wellbeing of individual students is the responsibility of all members of the school community. The formal Pastoral Care Programs in Years 7 and 8 are taught over one period per fortnight. I am Mark Macdougall, an experienced group work facilitator, and I facilitate the Year 8 Pastoral Care program and the Year 7 ‘Solving the Jigsaw’ program, in collaboration with each homeroom teacher, and the Year Level Leader. These programs sit alongside the work of the Student Wellbeing Team at the College. The Year 8 Program commenced at the start of Term 1 and each class has completed “interviews”- a get to know you activity they are somewhat familiar with, from 2015. This has been followed by an exploration of emotional literacy, incorporating aspects of emotional vocabulary, body language, and activities exploring empathy. Early in Term 2, we will revisit (from 2015) the topic of violence and bullying - this time via an interactive performance show in each homeroom, which is complemented by reinforcing and extending on concepts from the Year 7 Program. We will then explore other topics and activities as they arise, including some which the students have nominated as of interest to them. In Year 7, ‘Solving the Jigsaw’ program commenced at the beginning of Term 2. ‘Solving the Jigsaw’ covers material and subjects that impact on young people’s lives today. Topics include resilience, violence and bullying, strengths and qualities, trust, conflict resolution, friendship and group dynamics, feelings and emotions, loss and grief, anger, families, transition and change. Should you have enquiries about the pastoral care programs for Year 7 and 8, please direct these to your child’s Home-room Teacher or Year Level Leader. Further to this, I am happy to discuss any aspect of these programs with parents/ guardians. More information about ‘Solving the Jigsaw’ can be found at www.solvingthejigsaw.org.au

Award for Wonderful Contribution to our Youth!

Congratulations to Mr Ian Huke, one of our College Counsellor, who was recognised this week for his contribution and wonderful work in the area of specialised youth camps in the Macedon Ranges. Ian has been involved in this program since its initiation in 2006. The camps support families and children experiencing challenges in their daily life. The camps build a positive relationship with the local police force and promote a combined philosophy of fun, team work, responsibility and work ethic. Well done Ian!

SIMON Parent Access Module (PAM) Update - Ms Peita Rocard, Learning Resources Leader Over the last week parents have been diligently accessing the Parent Access Module (PAM) of our College Intranet, to book upcoming interviews with teachers. All families are issued with a username and password for PAM access upon enrolment. These details will remain the same each year, unless changed by a parent or guardian. Usernames are identical to the family accounts code used by the College and passwords are a computer generated four digit pin. Once logged into PAM please enter your current accessible email address. This will enable automatic retrieval of forgotten passwords. The College encourages parents and guardians to access PAM on a regular basis as the main means of communicating daily student messages, assessment task results, timetable updates and important documentation for families. Please contact [email protected] if you require further assistance in logging in or navigating PAM.

The 2016 MITCH ‘Next Generation Concert’ Braemar College, Sunday April 17 at 2.30 pm Over the last few years, the MITCH Next Generation concerts have presented an entire program of the best, new, young musicians in the Central Highlands. The concerts have been a wonderful way for young people to see their contemporaries and for MITCH to create programs that are diverse and inspiring. Following the very successful 2015 ‘Next Generation Concert’, MITCH is proud to present the 2016 concert - once again in the glorious, nineteenth century main hall at Braemar College. For the first time, the 2016 performers are drawn from all the Macedon Ranges secondary schools such as, Braemar College, Gisborne Secondary College, Sacred Heart College and Kyneton Secondary College, as well as the Resonance String Orchestra. Already confirmed for the concert is the impressive Year 11 pianist Jing Zhang. She is preparing for Grade 7 piano under the tutelage of Bron Sozanski.
