LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATIONNew Jersey’s strategic location in the heart of one of the most concentrated and affluent consumer markets in the world, and its world-class transportation infrastructure offering unsurpassed access to national and international markets, make it a natural fit for the manufacturing industry.

The State is within a day’s drive of more than 130 million consumers with $3 trillion in disposable income, as well as thousands of retailers, making it an attractive place for manufacturers to do business. A distribution center in central New Jersey can serve more than 22 million consumers with nearly $800 billion in income within a 2-hour drive. This makes New Jersey ideal for same-day deliveries, attracting companies like Amazon, Fresh Direct, HelloFresh, Peapod and ShopRite.

New Jersey’s ideal location in the heart of the Northeast corridor of the United States also gives manufacturers strategic access to the world’s trade and financial centers, including New York and Washington D.C. In fact, New Jersey offers unparalleled access via road, rail, air or sea to nearly every place in the world.

The State has unrivalled road and rail networks, including 2,800 miles of interstates and highways, and the nation’s highest railroad density, with 2 Class I railroads and 17 commuter rail lines. Newark Liberty International Airport and nearby airports offer daily non-stop flights to more than 90 U.S. cities and 110 international destinations.

New Jersey is also home to the Port of New York and New Jersey, the 3rd largest seaport in North America and the largest maritime cargo center on the East Coast, making it easy to import and export goods and products. Major capital projects are currently underway at New Jersey’s ports to ensure they are ready for post-Panamax activity, including a $743.3 million rebuilding project to raise the clearance of the Bayonne Bridge. New Jersey also boasts 5 foreign trade zones, including one of the largest contiguous Foreign-Trade Zones in the U.S. – FTZ #49 at Port Newark/Elizabeth.

THERE ARE MANY BENEFITS OF OPERATING IN NEW JERSEY. WE BRING IN PAPER FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, SO IT’S IMPORTANT FOR US TO BE NEAR THE MAJOR PORTS. WE ALSO SHIP INTERNATIONALLY, SO WE MUST BE CLOSE TO PROFICIENT TRANSPORTATION. HIGHLY EDUCATED, HIGHLY SKILLEDNew Jersey has one of the most highly educated, highly skilled workforces in the nation, which makes it easy for manufacturers to recruit top talent. With more scientists and engineers per square mile than anywhere in the world, manufacturers like Pinnacle Foods and Unilever not only have headquarters in the State, but also have their R&D and innovation centers in New Jersey.

New Jersey’s highly educated workforce and access to nationally-ranked universities like Princeton, Rutgers, Stevens Institute of Technology and New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), also make it possible for manufacturers to combine innovative research with cutting-edge processes to create the products of tomorrow, today. More than 48% of the State’s manufacturing industry is classified as advanced manufacturing as compared to the national average of 42%.

Ranked #2 in the Northeast U.S. for workforce development, New Jersey also has a well-earned reputation for its workforce development and training programs. Created with grants issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, New Jersey’s Talent Networks connect employers with trained employees in major industry clusters, including manufacturing. The Advanced Manufacturing Talent Network, which is operated by NJIT, develops strategic partnerships with employers, educators and workforce development professionals to ensure the State’s workforce addresses the rapidly-changing needs of employers.

Other related programs include Employee Training Grants, Apprenticeship Training and On-the-Job Training programs which help companies find and train employees that will help them grow in an increasingly competitive business environment. The Community College Consortium for Workforce and Economic Development ensures New Jersey companies have a one-point access to the vast resources of community colleges throughout the State.

A WORLD-CLASS INFRASTRUCTURE New Jersey’s top utility companies have been investing billions of dollars into infrastructure improvements to make the State’s utilities resilient, at the forefront of innovation and the backbone of manufacturing in New Jersey.

From hardening and improving electric and gas systems to piloting state-of-the-art software to ensure clean, reliable water service, New Jersey utility companies are building the infrastructure of tomorrow, today. Ranked #3 in the nation for solar power capacity, several clean energy projects - from wind farms to solar panels – also are underway or on the horizon to meet the State’s goal to use 30% of electricity from renewable sources by 2020.

Manufacturers in New Jersey also have access to one of the most extensive broadband networks in the U.S. The State’s broadband speeds are among the fastest in the nation.

INCENTIVES TO SUPPORT GROWTHNew Jersey streamlined its financial incentive programs through the 2013 Economic Opportunity Act, making it easier for companies to qualify for tax credits that are fully transferrable. Companies may qualify for tax breaks by creating as few as 25 full-time jobs (10 for new technology startups and manufacturing businesses). The following program may be especially useful to Garden State manufacturing companies:

Grow New Jersey Assistance Program (Grow NJ): Provides tax credits ranging from $500 to $5,000 per job, per year, over ten years, with numerous bonus credits each ranging from $250 to $3,000 per job, per year if the project meets certain requirements. Maximum awards can reach as high as $15,000 per job, per year, and projects can earn up to $300 million over 10 years.
