Letter from the PresidentThings have slowed down in recent weeks with uncertainty as to who is currently looking after various committees and projects.

In coming weeks we'll start putting together some much needed guidelines to clarify reporting structures and other communication frameworks. It is my fervent hope that this will help support club members in bringing forward their ideas, or discovering existing projects and programs that align with your passions that you can get involved with.

In April we will have a club of club forums in the regular meeting time to bring forward new projects and events to discuss.

In the next couple of meetings, we will also briefly discuss 1 new project idea, to start getting the ball rolling with a few new initiatives, and will have brief overviews about what the different district and international projects involve, especially from a time, cost and personal involvement perspective. I hope this will help everyone get a grasp on

what commitment projects such as Interact, RYDA, GSE, RYPEN etc have versus some of the other projects we have done. Many projects only involve 1 or 2 people, and in some cases for extremely short amounts of time (eg sourcing a candidate) once a year. I hope once this is clearer, our list of potential projects won't look quite so onerous!

Last Week's MeetingA fascinating presentation was given by Geoff Hourn about his time in Gardez, Afghanistan in 2004-2005 as the Regional Director for the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

The UNOPS team oversaw the elections in Afghanistan, and provided assistance wherever it was needed, such as building roads and setting up other infrastructure.

His photos were incredible, of towns that haven't really changed since the middle ages, remnants of car bombs (including blood stains) outside the walls of the compound where he worked, and the local people.

This Week's MeetingMike Sheldrick will be addressing us about the Global Poverty Project, and their work in making the final push to end polio now.

Bill Gates has asked the Global Poverty Project team to work closely with Rotary to end polio, and a great opportunity is coming up in October, as the CHOGM meeting will commence in Perth on World Polio Day (October 24th).

Mike Sheldrick would like to explore ideas for our club to work with the Global Poverty Project, to raise funds for and awareness of polio eradication, in October. So please don't miss this great opportunity to be a part of something that will reach many Heads of Government!

Shelter BoxesThere is a desperate need for more Shelterboxes in many areas of the globe, particularly Japan. These can be purchased for $1,000 each tax deductibly.

Over the course of the President Elect Training Seminar (PETS) weekend,

enough money was raised to completely fund a ShelterBox. Many of the funds were donated as “fines” levied for using Rotary acronyms over the course of the weekend, plus there was an additional fines session at the Saturday night dinner, a raffle and an impromptu auction.

A 2nd ShelterBox is being donated by Hollywood Hospital to match the one donated on behalf of our District.

ShelterBox in JapanMy Fellow Rotarians, We have all seen the devastating earthquake and the ensuing Tsunami hit Japan.

The thousands of lives lost, homes destroyed, livelihoods washed away, millions of persons displaced.

A truly cruel and catastrophic disaster on a monumental scale. I know that we have in recent times put our hands into our pockets to help, and our pockets are much lighter than they have been for a long time.

Wiluna GSE Team to DepartAfter a very lengthy period since Alan Stewart first suggested to Ken Collins that it would be beneficial for a team of Aboriginals and health workers from Wiluna to visit Fiji to learn more about village life, the exchange is finally going to happen. Almost 2 years ago, Ken met with the Manger of the Rotary Foundation and the then incoming Chairman of the Rotary Foundation Trustees to obtain permission to put together a unifocus

Group Study Exchange Team, funded by the Rotary Foundation, with the money coming from District funds.

As Fiji is a part of a Rotary District in New Zealand, Ken and Alan met with the District Governor from NZ to obtain her permission for the E x c h a n g e . F u r t h e r permission was also obtained to increase the size of the team from the usual Team Leader plus 4 members to the Team Leader plus 7 members. Due to a series of deaths, which is observed differently in the indigenous community to the western culture, the departure of the team has been delayed several times.

After a presentation by this unique team at the District Conference this Saturday afternoon, the GSE Team will depart for Fiji on Sunday morning, 27th March, returning on 29th April. The Team leader is PDG Hugh Lavery, who has an association with Wiluna and the aboriginal community. The rest of the team consists of 7 Martu Aboriginal Leaders from Wiluna: Clinton Farmer, Stewart Long, Greg Newland, Apisalome Waqa (who is of Fijian descent), Tracey Wo n g a w o l , R o x a n n e Anderson, and Annie Koroicure.

The team will be accompanied by a Cultural advisor and Cultural Liaison person. It is also intended for a professional photographer/journalist (from Fiji) to join the team for the majority of the expedition.

The team will arrive in Nadi and then travel to some 7-8 communities over the period, spending between 3and 4 days at each communities.

Interact ClubA second meeting took place on Thursday, 17th March.

A couple of new boys from Scotch College came along, although a few of the MLC girls had other commitments and were not in attendance.

Under the guidance of Hamish Mackie, who has taken on the responsibility of looking after Interact, all present briefly introduced themselves. The young folk then formed into a couple of groups and talked about potential projects and fundraising activities. Much enthusiasm was evident.

There are definitely enough interested young people to form a club and the next meeting will take place on Thursday, 31st March at Christ Church Grammar

School.

Members interested in being involved are encouraged to do so.

Volunteer Grant UpdateA marquee has been ordered from Canopy Outdoor, complete with Rotary logos and the name of the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay. It is nearing completion and will be dispatched on 30th April.

Congratulations Roger & Celine MarstonCongratulations to Roger and Celine Marston, who are the proud parents of a 4.014kg son, Grayson Charles, born at St John’s Murdoch on 16th March.

Roger Marston was a Charter Member of the club, and later became a Friend of the Club since his work with Rio Tinto made it too difficult for him to particpate in club activities.

District Governor for 2013-14The District Nominating Committee for the selection of District Governor Nominee for 2013-14 has selected Hank de Smit of the Rotary Club of Mount Lawley for the role. In accordance with the Bylaws, clubs have two weeks to propose a challenging candidate. Any challenging candidate proposed by a club must have been nominated by the club when nominations were first called for this position. The period for submission of a challenge to this Nominating Committee selection is 4 April 2011.

Any Rugby Fans? With 175 days to go to the start of the start of the 2011 Rugby World Cup we want to remind you of the wonderful opportunity New Zealand Rotarians are extending to their fellow Rotarians who are planning to visit for this great event.

Rather than stay in commercial accommodation, why not stay with New Zealand Rotarians and experience true kiwi hospitality? Bed and breakfast for NZ$150 (which includes the donation to polio plus) is a real bargain but more importantly it’s a way to “bridge continents”. You’ll make lifetime friends and get a real sense of New Zealand.

Bookings are coming in steadily but we have plenty of hosts available in all venues. And we can even find hosts in locations other than game venues if you want to go somewhere else between games.

Have a look at the website www.rotarynzrugbyhosting.co.nz and see how easy it is take advantage of combining some great games with the chance to meet some new Rotary friends.

If you have been thinking about the trip of a lifetime, now is the time to act. More tickets are being released, New Zealand Rotarians are keen to open their homes to Rotarian visitors and this is the opportunity to have the trip of a lifetime and support our charity.

You will be aware that the Christchurch earthquake has caused RNZ 2011 Tournament Owner, Rugby World Cup Limited, the New Zealand Government and the New Zealand Rugby Union, to assess to critical Tournament facilities and services in Christchurch . These include Stadium Christchurch itself, accommodation, training

facilities, the transport network and other key infrastructure. In the event that this review causes one or more matches to be rescheduled, or staged at a different venue, Rotary hosting bookings in Christchurch can be either changed to another venue or refunded. We will do what it takes to ensure visiting Rotarians enjoy their time in New Zealand, no matter what.

Historic Moments: Origins of Group Study ExchangeBy Susan Hanf and Lauren Kalal  Rotary International News 16 March 2011

In January 1964, the RI Board of Directors and The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees approved Group Study Exchange   as an official Rotary program. Thirty-four teams from 17 pairs of districts participated in the first round of exchanges during the 1965-66 and 1966-67 Rotary years.

But young people had been traveling the globe with support from Rotary clubs well before this decision. In 1950, six young men from England went to New Zealand, led by English Rotarian Geoff Morton and financed by clubs in Yorkshire. They traveled the country, staying with Rotarians along the way.

Rotarian Ralph Vernon proposed a similar endeavor in 1955 to clubs in northern New Zealand, who wanted to commemorate Rotary’s golden anniversary with a districtwide effort. District 39 (now districts 9910, 9920, 9930, and 9940) created the Rotary Overseas Travel Award

Group Study Exchange team members visit a nuclear research project near Geneva, circa 1967. From the November 1967 issue of The Rotarian.

Host - Introduction & Thank You

New Horizons: Winner of the District 9450 Bulletin Award for 2009/10

program, and John Ledgerwood, of the Rotary Club of Hamilton, led the first team on a trip to Great Britain.

The program was so successful that district leaders in New Zealand decided to continue it after the anniversary celebrations had ended. Over the next few years, teams from New Zealand traveled to Canada, India, Japan, Sri Lanka, and the United States. New Zealand Rotarians welcomed

visitors from these countries as well as from Pakistan.

In the early 1960s, the Trustees began considering programs for non-Rotarians that would promote international goodwill and understanding. One plan was for small groups of young business and professional men to travel from one Rotary district to a district in another country.

Harold T. Thomas, a New Zealand Rotarian who served

as RI president in 1959-60, shared information about the Rotary Overseas Travel Award with the Trustees. Soon after the Board and Trustees approved Group Study Exchange, Vernon and other Rotarians with experience in group exchanges and vocational training were invited to finalize the details of the new Foundation program.

In the nearly five decades since, more than 70,000 young men and women have

traveled the globe as part of Group Study Exchange teams.
