• Moments of Truth• Used annual Goals & Objectives approach …developed in Dec/Jan from board approved
Strategic Plan and 12-month Operating Plan
• G&O established by function/business leader/team …rolling up to CEO’s G&O
• Key goals were translated into business Moments of Truth by Quarter
• Quarterly progress reviewed and discussed with Board every quarter
• G&O approach had shortcomings that needed to be addressed• Too static …G&O and Moments of Truth were PPT based and not a dynamic part of daily
operations …greatly limiting motivational/coaching impact, as well as alignment and results
• Inclusiveness questionable …not all employees were being reached

OKRs that cascade down through the organization …starting with the CEO
• Loading the goals directly in the tool, by quarter, as a team …enabling transparency,
inclusivity, contribution and clear focus …in a dynamic tool for daily interaction
• OKRs are targeted by quarter, with daily inter-action, allowing appropriate re-calibration for
continued business evolution and team motivation …vital for the reality of business and
good management
• Goals are intended to be SMART and inspirational …we can test and fine tune
• A new culture for reflection and feedback• We know networking and collaboration are powerful attributes of a ‘great’ company
• We also know that empowering your employees, motivates and delivers improved results
• With BetterWorks we get daily interaction, cheering, nudging and commentary …it works!
• Developing stronger leaders• BetterWorks is a forcing function in some ways, driving transparency …up and down
• It provides a medium for listening, supporting, coaching, leading …creating better leaders
Evolving Our Culture
Three immediate wins with BetterWorks
• We continue to learn and evolve• We are passionate about continuous improvement and while we view our service quality to
be high, we are also focused on how we can get better …this never ends
• OKRs are essential for this, especially the quarterly rhythm, but without an on-line dynamic
tool, with a lot of daily collaboration, the opportunity to improve would be diminished
• We’re trying new approaches and ideas constantly …and most importantly, learning how to
engage our employees
• Can BetterWorks VIPs’ become a community?• I learned to apply G&O at GE but found this rigid and somewhat static approach was
greatly limited in its effectiveness in my new world …CEO of a VC backed startup
• I’ve generated a new network of advisors, experts and sounding boards …it really helps
• The value of OKRs and the BetterWorks tool takes some time to fully realize …a network
of users could be a great resource …I am still learning
