Director’s section Welcome to the new CIAO Newsletter, which covers the period October – December 2017. All available previous issues starting from 2003 as well as the series of the School of Information Technology & Mathematical Sciences Research Newsletters dating from 1998 can be accessed from the CIAO web site: http://federation.edu.au/ciao.

This period was rich in various events. Let me mention a series of optimisation related workshops, which started 30 November with our annual Workshop on Metric Bounds and Transversality (WoMBaT 2017) at RMIT University in Melbourne and continued at Curtin University in Perth with Joint Optimization Conferences 2017 including the Eighth Australia-China Workshop on Optimization: Theory, Methods and Applications (ACWO 2017), the Second Pacific Optimization Conference (POC 2017), and the South Pacific Optimization Meeting in Western Australia 2017 (SPOM in WA 2017). This series was followed by the annual meeting of the Australian Mathematical Society, which included a special optimisation session.

China-Australia Collaboration in Applied Optimization (CACAO) was officially launched on 4 December 2017 at Curtin University at a special ceremony during the ACWO 2017. It is a renewal of the first CACAO established in 2006 between the then University of Ballarat and Shanghai University on the initiative of Professor Alexander Rubinov. During the POC 2017, the best student presentation competition was administered by the Mathematics of Computation and Optimisation (MoCaO) special group of the Australian Mathematical Society. The best student presentation prize including $200 sponsored by MoCaO went to a Curtin University, Malaysian Campus student, and two students from Curtin University Australia and Chinese University of Hong Kong, respectively, were awarded honourable mentions.

After a two-year break, a team of researchers headed by Dr Julien Ugon have brought another prestigious ARC Discovery grant to further their mathematical research into optimisation techniques. It is pleasant to see that 5 out of 6 researchers on the team are current or honorary CIAO members.

Dr Savin Chand received the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research. The award acknowledges his valuable contribution in obtaining two commendable achievements in 2017: a Nature Climate Change research paper and a NESP Earth Systems and Climate Change research grant.

Congratulations to Dr Richard Dazeley and Dr Nadezda Sukhorukova (honorary) on their promotions to Level D and Level C, respectively, and to 3 CIAO students: Christian Kopp (ICSL), Pradnya Kulkarni and Julie Ross, and IT lecturer Sunil Aryal who successfully completed their PhDs.

It was good to see Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Innovation Prof Leigh Sullivan and Vice Chancellor Prof Helen Bartlett coming to CIAO meetings to meet CIAO researchers and hear more about the work of CIAO.

This edition contains news from the Research Group on Pure Mathematics and Climate Informatics Research Group, information about research visitors to CIAO and the list of recent publications by CIAO members. Enjoy the reading.

Research Fellow Prof Marco López Cerdá, Alicante University (Spain), CIAO Adjunct

Professor Prof Jean-Pierre Crouzeix, University of Blaise Pascal (France),

CIAO Adjunct Professor Prof Nira Dyn, Tel Aviv University (Israel)

This research work is another example of the very strong mathematical research carried out at CIAO. The grant will total up to $362,045 and run from 2018 to 2020. The full title of the project is “An optimisation-based framework for non-classical Chebyshev approximation”.

This project aims to solve open mathematical problems in multivariate and piecewise polynomial approximations, two directions that correspond to fundamental obstacles to extending classical approximation results.

Through an innovative combination of optimisation and algebraic technique, the project intends to develop foundations for new results in approximation theory, and new insights into other areas of mathematics, most notably optimisation. The techniques and methods developed should also have significant benefits in the many disciplines where approximation problems appear, such as engineering, physics or data mining.

The research outputs resulting from this project will be used in a wide range of fields to help implement programs, policies and improve decision making.

The funding is provided by the Australian Government through the Australian Research Council’s Discovery Program – DP18 scheme.

FOST researchers invited to present research to the US Defence Research Laboratories

Three groups of Faculty of Science and Technology researchers attended an invitation-only workshop to present their research to the representatives of the US Defence Research Laboratories in South Australia recently. The Robotics and Autonomy Workshop was hosted by the Defence Science Institute (DSI) with the support of the US Army's International Technology Center – Pacific and Defence Science Technology (DST) Group over two days in Adelaide on 6-7 November 2017.

On behalf of Federation Learning Agents Group (FLAG) across the Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimisation and the Centre for Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Artificial Intelligence Research (MCCAIR), A/Prof Peter Vamplew gave a presentation on creating trusted autonomous agents using multi-objective reinforcement learning. The presentation outlined several projects to investigate the application of FLAG’s expertise in multi-objective reinforcement learning to various aspects impacting on human trust in autonomous systems.

Prof Manzur Murshed and A/Prof Shyh Wei Teng presented their research at MCCAIR. Prof Guojun Lu delivered a talk on developing a novel “application-focused” video coding technology to improve video analytics in compressed domain by provisioning 1) Adaptability: reconfigurable coder to generate on-demand metadata for targeted applications, 2) Intelligence: on-board video analytics to design low-cost “smart” sensors, and 3) Stealth: event-driven video transmission in ad-hoc networks susceptible to noises and eavesdropping. The presentation outlined potential defence applications in autonomous video surveillance, ground vehicle robotics and aerial drones, remote sensing, and human-machine teaming.

Mr Sunil Aryal presented Prof Kai Ming Ting’s research at MCCAIR on the impact of sample size and dissimilarity on learning in dynamic and uncertain environments, which aims to establish a theoretical understanding of the impact of dissimilarity measures on the sample size requirement of learning algorithms to achieve optimal accuracy, particularly in nearest neighbour anomaly detection. With this understanding, the research further aims to create fast and effective algorithms to detect anomalies in dynamic and uncertain environments.

Faculty of Science and Technology Support Forum: Start-Ups: Turning research into impact

The path from research to commercial or social enterprises is often rocky. Recent initiatives by CSIRO, Federal and State governments are aimed at changing the culture so that researchers are equipped to assess and explore commercialisation opportunities. The aim of these initiatives is to create an ecosystem where innovation and entrepreneurship thrives. The Faculty of Science and Technology recognises the challenges in the translation of research into commercial products, and as such, it aims to provide support for its academic staff in this area; for instance, in the form of support forums. The support forum initiative has been instigated by CIAO.

The presenters of the forum have been involved in different ways with the challenges of entrepreneurship.

Climate Informatics Research Group Key focus of the Climate Informatics Research Group (CIRG) is to understanding climate change and variability, and their impacts on environment and society in Australia and the Asia-Pacific regions.

Some current and prospective research projects within CERG are as follows.

NESP Earth Systems and Climate Change Research Project on Extremes - $183,211

This project is funded by the Department of Environment and Energy, in collaboration with CSIRO and Bureau of Meteorology to assess various characteristics of tropical cyclones, as well as associated extreme weather in general, using observed records and climate model simulations.

Impact of tropical cyclones on travelling ionosphere disturbances

This project investigates the extent of tropical cyclone modulation on the ionosphere.

Subseasonal-to-seasonal prediction of Australian tropical cyclones

Through detailed analysis of observations and operational model forecasts, this project seeks to develop subseasonal to seasonal tropical cyclone prediction systems for Australia and the Pacific. Insights gained will advance our knowledge towards more seamless and integrated weather and climate forecasts.

Reconstructing historical tropical cyclone records for the Pacific

In order to understand the nature of variability within the context of future climate change, it is useful to establish a long-term record of tropical cyclones extending back to periods with climate states different from the present day. This project will aim to develop such temporal records that may extend several thousand years back.

Subseasonal-to-seasonal prediction of bushfire conditions for regional Victoria from climatic variables

The overarching aim of the proposed study is to examine subseasonal-to-seasonal predictability of bushfire conditions for Victoria and develop innovative statistical-dynamical approaches to predict large-scale climatic variables that influence bushfire conditions at local scale.

Collaborations and research opportunities are available within CIRG. Please contact Dr Savin Chand ([email protected]) for details.

Students wishing to apply for a Data61 Scholarship should contact with a Data61 supervisor to discuss a research project. Application rounds are held two to four times each year, depending on university processes and numbers of applications. Rounds will be announced on the CSIRO and Data61 websites, together with relevant links and information.

For more information, visit http://data61.csiro.au/en/Collaborate-with-us/Students/Our-Scholarship-Program.

A/Prof Peter Vamplew ([email protected]) and A/Prof Iqbal Gondal ([email protected]) would be able to answer questions if a potential student would like to pursue a Data61 research project at FedUni.
