The Profession of Teaching (and supporting teaching)

From preservice teachers spending time in our College through to those about to retire

from teaching, we find people here who have the motivation to serve and show love to others. In our College we also find people who serve to support the teaching and learning which occurs.

Last week we treated and spoilt our teachers and support staff to say thank you in a small way for their professional commitment to our students, families and community. Page 2: NEW CANTEEN ONLINE ORDERING click...2015/11/04  · genius. People like Michelangelo, Pascal and Bach found the cross to be a symbol of what God can do in the world, rather than something

Those of you who have entered the campus from Adelaide Road over the last week would have noticed something different. Thanks to the hard work of our maintenance team,

last Wednesday a large metal cross was installed just beyond the front gate. This cross, along with several other pieces of artwork have been a long awaited initiative that grew out of the desire to find new ways to communicate our Christian faith.

However, the argument could be made that this sort of overt allegiance to one particular ideology, over and above any other, is inherently limiting and that we are not attaining to all that we could by holding onto ideas, and symbols, that are two millennia old. Yet, I think the cross is a reminder that our Christian foundation does not limit our ability to help form young people into wise, intelligent and compassionate adults; rather it increases it because it is a solid reminder that we are part of something much greater than ourselves. It is a reminder that we are not merely an accumulation of electrons spinning chaotically around other atomic particles. Rather, we are something divinely created who have been given the task of recreating the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven. This cross is a reminder that we have a destiny that goes beyond death to an inheritance that we could never hope to earn on our own but one that is given to us freely through the work that Jesus undertook on his own cross.

It is only recently, in human history, that Christianity has been seen as stifling and oppressive. Many of the greatest artists, thinkers and scientists found the Christian faith to be the source of inspiration that fed their genius. People like Michelangelo, Pascal and Bach found the cross to be a symbol of what God can do in the world, rather than something that holds the world back.

Lions’ International Youth of the Year QuestYear 12 student Georgia Ristivojevic attended a dinner at Auchendarroch on Wednesday, 28 October hosted by Mt Barker Lions’ Club. After a rigorous 30 minute interview with three judges, two impromptu speeches of two minutes (no preparation time) on topics relating to young people’s physical fitness and Australia’s response to the current Syrian refugee crisis, and a five minute prepared speech celebrating the richness of her own Serbian heritage and the need for Australians to embrace multiculturalism, Georgia has now progressed to the next level of this challenging competition which will be held early in 2016.

Congratulations Georgia, and thank you for being such a wonderful ambassador for Cornerstone College in this Quest!

Baby SimulatorsThe sounds of gurgling, burping and crying babies were heard around the campus this week as Year 11 Child Studies students cared for ten baby simulators. The parenting simulation is designed to help young adults experience the physical, emotional, social, and financial consequences of parenthood. Students loved the challenge but most were surprised by the amount of effort and time a baby needs, especially at night!

2016 Workplace LearningIn 2016, all of our Year 11s will be taking part in Workplace Learning. This will occur in Week 5 of Term 2 (30 May – 3 June for non-Outdoor Ed students) and Week 10 of Term 2 (4 July – 8 July for Outdoor Ed students). This can be an invaluable experience for students to help make decisions about possible future career paths, experience the world of work, and possibly to assist in gaining employment.

These are the dates we have allocated in term time so there will be no Year 11 classes ran during this period to support students to engage with this valuable experience. However, these may not work for students chosen employer. Use of school holiday time or another mutually convenient time instead is also able to be negotiated.

Students should begin exploring possible opportunities now, as placements with some businesses can be extremely competitive. More detailed information about the process for organising Workplace Learning will be sent home to families at the start of Term 1 next year.

Workplace Learning SurveyRecently we surveyed our current Year 11 and 12 students about their experiences with Workplace Learning and its value to them. Given the growing challenges that students face in finding a suitable employer to give

them an experience like this, I was really pleased with the positive feedback and results from students and how upon reflection, they valued the opportunity to explore their possible career options in this way.

From the results, some key information we were able to gather from the students was:• 89% of students surveyed felt that it

assisted them in making decisions about future career paths.

• 71% felt that their experience helped them in selecting suitable subjects for the following year.

Many students commented about the value of their experience (see below):

“Personally I believe that work experience was very valuable in helping me to decide on career pathways and eliminate options that did not suit me.”

“It gave me an idea on what I didn’t want to do.”

“I was hesitant prior to work experience about doing it. But I am now really glad I did it as it has really confirmed what I want to do as a career and gave me extensive insight into the job.”

“I did not enjoy my Year 10 work experience because I didn’t choose a placement that was interesting, but my Year 11 work experience was amazing! It was so much fun.”

“It was really exciting to do what I actually want to do as a career and see if it’s the right choice for me.”

Royal Show AwardsDid you know that the Adelaide Show is run by the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of SA? And that one of its main purposes is actually to give the people of SA a chance to display things agricultural and horticultural. And that’s what three of Cornerstone’s finest students did this year. They entered plant specimens from the school campus in the Australian Native Plants section of the show.

Olivia Gardner chose three beautiful specimens to submit in the Grevillea category but sadly did not win a prize.

Rachel Oertel entered a lovely cutting from a Banksia plant in the Foliage category and she was awarded Third Place.

Tahlia Massner chose three stunning Banksia flowers for the Three Blooms category and she won First Place. In addition, her entry was awarded Champion Novice Australian Native Bloom. So she won an extra special ribbon and later in the year will receive a medal from the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

The plants these students chose are all from the grounds here at Cornerstone so it shows you how blessed we are to have such an amazing natural environment here and also what a great job the Maintenance team (and in particular, Mr Shane Hein) does to keep our campus looking so beautiful.

Year 10 Outdoor Education BushwalkOn Wednesday, 21 October, 56 students, 6 teachers and 6 assistant leaders left the grounds of Cornerstone and headed by bus up to the Mount Remarkable National Park to embark on the Year 10 Outdoor Education Bushwalking Expedition. The students were divided into 6 different walking groups and over the following 3 days walked approximately 30km up mountains, down mountains and through some beautiful gorges. On this expedition the students carried all of their personal camping and survival supplies in a backpack on their backs. They all showed great determination, developed stronger friendships and learnt camping and navigational skills. Overall they should be very proud of what they achieved.

Mrs Ali HodgsonOutdoor Education Teacher

Here are a few comments from some of the students:

The year ten bushwalking expedition was such an incredible experience that I would love to do again and the views were amazing! I would definitely recommend it to everybody approaching Year 10! - Emily Fenwick

The whole trip was an amazing experience and was enjoyed by everyone. I would love to do this again one day. It is a great experience.- Hannah Badger

I thoroughly enjoyed the Year 10 Outdoor Ed camp! It was amazing spending three days with a great bunch of people and seeing such wonderful views.- Jackson Liersch

I loved the camp, it was really chilled out and relaxed, great bonding time with the boys and girls. The only bad thing was Cameron Bates lead us up a huge hill. - Riley Caruana

Year 10 Girls Knockout BasketballThe Year 10 girls Knockout Basketball team played against Murray Bridge High on Monday, 26 October. The game was played on our home court and was the first time the team had played together. The Murray Bridge girls started off very strong applying a full court press and it was obvious from the first whistle that it was going to be a hard game to win. The Murray Bridge girls showed very good skills and it was obvious that they had played together before. Unfortunately we were not successful in winning the game with the final score being 53 - 18. I was, however, very pleased with the girls determination and ability to listen and try their best. Their defence, attacking confidence and team work improved throughout the game and they showed some very good basketball skills. Well done girls.

FREE EVENT2016 Computer PurchasesFor students going into Years 7, 10 or 11 next year, or for students in other year levels that require a new computer, comprehensive information on purchasing a new computer through iSeek Computing will be sent out today.

We have chosen to recommend Lenovo computers through iSeek again this time around as they offer the best deals in terms of price, features, durability and service for families. Demonstration models are now available at iSeek for you to inspect before purchasing.

Orders placed through iSeek’s Portal before 16 November will be available for collection before Christmas for families wanting to do this. Please ensure that you speak with iSeek if ordering after this date to confirm the computer will be delivered before the start of Term 1 (1/2/2016 ).

The College strongly recommends families ensure they have ADP (Accidental Damage Protection) for their child’s computer and this will be offered with the computers via the portal. However, ADP can be sourced from other companies, and home insurance may provide some cover. Families interested in possibly using an alternative cover should investigate the terms in preparation for comparison with Lenovo’s ADP offering.

Finance options will also be available through iSeek when purchasing, and will be found on the iSeek Portal.

For any further information on the above or after you have read through the additional information that will be sent out, please contact ICT Services at the College on 8398 6099 or iSeek Computing on 1300 047 335.

Exam Return

• Year 11 attendance - On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday students only have to attend school for their specific exams. Arrive early and attendance rolls will be checked in all exams. Students who have lesson 1/2 exam and an afternoon exam with a break in between must stay at school to study. They are not permitted to leave school between exams. Study rolls will be checked for Lesson 3/4 studies.

• Driving to school for exams - If a Year 11 student is planning to drive to and from school, they must have completed the forms for driving permission. If these have not previously been completed, they are available at Student Reception and must be completed as soon as possible. Please park only in student car parks.

• Mobile phones and personal music devices - If a student needs to bring a phone to an exam then it must be turned off and handed to the exam supervisor for the duration of the exam. Under no circumstances is a student to use or look at a mobile phone or other electronic device during an exam (except where calculators/spell-checkers are permitted). This is a SACE rule.

• Students are not permitted to leave exams early.

• Please ensure your Notebook is charged for any exams requiring electronic resources.

Exams – Year 10 and 11The end of year exam schedule is included for family reference. Year 10 and 11 students are reminded about the protocols related to exams. These are outlined on the schedule. In particular, students need to have completed the required driving form to be able to drive to school for exams. Year 10 students attend school for the full exam period regardless of how many exams they have. Normal lessons run when exams are not scheduled. Year 11 students need only attend for their exams.

parent information parentsteachersfriendsStay Smart Online WeekHere are some ideas to help families continue to manage digital devices and online safety at home.

This is sourced from the excellent site ThinkUKnow. If you would like to explore their resources further then visit the ThinkUKnow website for these resources. While we have specific cyber-safety programs at school to support students, as this article highlights, it is really important that families are also discussing these matters and setting their own household guidelines in relation to the use of digital devices. We encourage parents and caregivers to consider the suggestions below.

Mrs Julie SampsonLearning Director

What device capabilites are required? When choosing the device for your child, have a look at the capabilities built in and whether you can disable any of these. Your school will provide a list of software or operating system requirements as part of their BYOD program, but you may wish to disable other features or purchase a device with limited capabilities. Some parents choose to disable the camera functionality on some tablets or laptops for their younger children; others restrict the functions of smartphones to simply calling and texting. As a family, you’ll need to decide what features are required and whether the device you are purchasing allows you to disable other features. Not all devices allow certain features to be deactivated so it is best to speak to the sales representative or visit the product’s website before purchasing an item.

Not all digital literacy learning happens at schoolYou might see a laptop or tablet as a tool for schoolwork and homework, but your child will likely view them as tools for playing games, watching videos and communicating with friends. While their primary purpose may be for schooling, the activities your child undertakes on these devices may also help them to learn critical digital literacy skills. As they communicate with friends and, at times, strangers, they will learn crucial skills around relationship and reputation management. Viewing, creating and sharing content online will also assist them in learning about digital ownership rights, evaluating the value of content viewed and privacy management.

Balancing these activities, however, is important. Helping your child to structure the time spent doing school work and time spent socialising online, as well as time spent away from a screen, can assist them in maintaining a healthy digital diet. Allocating time for each activity can help your child establish a routine and, as their needs change as they get older, you can adapt these routines together.

Parents as teachersWe often hear parents voicing concerns about how they can manage their child’s use of their device when at home. As discussed above, much of a child’s digital learning is likely to happen in informal settings when at home. This doesn’t need to be a cause for alarm, but an opportunity to re-evaluate how cyber safety and security are addressed in the home. Each family will have different needs, but we recommend the following steps:

Talk about ethical decision-makingActively and continually talking about the safe and ethical use of technology must be the first step. Ensuring your child knows that you wish to play an active role in their digital

activities and you are there to assist them if something goes wrong can encourage a more open dialogue around technology. Discussing strategies to overcome scenarios or working through actual online conflicts or upsetting content can help your child feel more prepared for their digital life, and give them skills they can use even when a parent or teacher isn’t around to assist them.

Keep devices in family areas where possible or the bedroom door stays openMany Australian households no longer own a family computer, instead utilising laptops and tablets connected to a wireless router. This makes it much more difficult to restrict internet access by children and young people to devices always within view of a parent. Where possible, the use of portable devices in family areas of the home is encouraged, but if they are being used in bedrooms we would recommend that the door remains open. This allows a parent to pop their head in and make sure everything is alright, but also reminds the child that there are people around to help if something does go wrong.

Bedtime for devicesHaving a bedtime for devices at least half an hour before the child goes to bed can help them to switch off and get the deep, uninterrupted sleep they need to develop and rest. The earlier you start this with your child the easier it will be.

Family Internet Safety ContractIf you haven’t already developed a Family Internet Safety Contract, you may wish to do so. It is a valuable tool which outlines the rules and boundaries for internet use in your home. Include as much information as possible about your expectations around time, safety, security, supervision, behaviour and consequences.

Food & Fun FestWe were blessed with a warm Spring evening for our annual Food & Fun Fest on Friday, 30 October. This assured the large and enthusiastic crowd could enjoy the numerous activities, food and entertainment. Whether it was sharing in some Indian curry, yiros or a hamburger; being entertained by our talented music students or participating in bubble soccer; there was something for everyone.

A night like this could not happen without the significant support of our school community. We are very grateful to the PT&F Committee and parents, staff and students who volunteered their time, donated items or came along to join the night. The money raised from this event will go towards Middle School seating and shading.
