A Note from the Pastor By Rev. Carol Stufflebeam Dear Friends in Christ, We celebrated Pentecost in the church on Sunday, May 23 this year. This worship experience marks the time when God sent His Holy Spirit down upon His people. The Holy Spirit is Gods pres- ence within us. It is His presence and power that enables us to live confidently in this world as a people of God. In the book of Acts is recorded the event that took place in the first century that changed everything for the followers of Jesus. I want to share the first four verses of this second chapter with you. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.(Acts 2:1-4, NIV) During Pentecost God chose to enable His followers to speak in languages they had never spoken before as a witness to the power of God who was at work within each of them. Just as God enabled His disciples to journey forward in that day, He still empowers His follow- ers today. Jesus gives the church the ability to be a witness in every generation. He calls us to stand confident in His power that is at work. The apostle Paul wrote, I can do all things through him who strengthens me.(Philippians 4:13, NRSV) Paul knew that no matter what the church faced, that Jesus was there to strengthen them all. We stand on those promises. I am excited at the prospect of what God has in store for the church. Let us join together confidently trusting that God is right here with us and it is by His strength that we will be a witness for His glory. Shalom, Pastor Carol New Bible Study Christian comedian Chonda Pierce has opening shared what the impact of depression has had upon her life in her book Laughing in the Dark. She has developed a Bible study to help guide the conversation about the mental health issues that so many people deal with. Her study is designed for women; however, I believe it would be beneficial for men as well. I will lead this six-week study beginning Thursday, July 15 (8:00 a.m., 4:00 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.). Home Visits The past year placed limitations on so many things within the church and beyond. It is such a blessing that some of those restrictions have been lifted. At this point I am more comfortable visiting individuals in their homes. I recognize that there are some who are still cautious, I do understand that, but if you would like me to visit you in your home, please reach out to me. I will begin making calls to those I know are homebound. I can be reached at 309-543-4725 or my cell at 217-204-8826. I look forward to visiting with each of you.

A Note from the Pastor

By Rev. Carol Stufflebeam

Dear Friends in Christ, We celebrated Pentecost in the church on Sunday, May 23 this year. This worship experience marks the time when God sent His Holy Spirit down upon His people. The Holy Spirit is God’s pres-ence within us. It is His presence and power that enables us to live confidently in this world as a people of God. In the book of Acts is recorded the event that took place in the first century that changed

everything for the followers of Jesus. I want to share the first four verses of this second chapter with you.

“When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” (Acts 2:1-4, NIV)

During Pentecost God chose to enable His followers to speak in languages they had never spoken before as a witness to the power of God who was at work within each of them. Just as God enabled His disciples to journey forward in that day, He still empowers His follow-ers today. Jesus gives the church the ability to be a witness in every generation. He calls us to stand confident in His power that is at work. The apostle Paul wrote, “ I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13, NRSV) Paul knew that no matter what the church faced, that Jesus was there to strengthen them all. We stand on those promises. I am excited at the prospect of what God has in store for the church. Let us join together confidently trusting that God is right here with us and it is by His strength that we will be a witness for His glory. Shalom,

Pastor Carol

Havana First United Methodist Church Worship Service The Trustees have determined that it is time to resume a number of elements within the wor-ship service as it was prior to the pandemic. We will resume singing, passing the offering plates, and serving Holy Communion in the pews. We will continue to utilize the individual communion cups with wafers for now. Social distancing is still encouraged and wearing masks for those who are not vaccinated is recommended. It is with grateful hearts that we journey forward. We do encourage individuals to follow the guidelines set forth by CDC and Illinois Great Rivers Conference to protect themselves against Covid 19. The following is a chart that has been shared on our Conference website on recommended guidelines (igrc.org).

Mission Offering This months mission offering will go to support the Snack Pack Program. This

program helps to provide students with the nutritional building blocks to thrive in school by sending home snack pack meals each Friday to last them through the weekend. It is hard to believe that some children only get meals while attending school, but it is a true fact. Each year, the snack pack meals help over 100 children at New Central School.
