New Attitude NOVEMBER 2017 VOLUME 7 ISSUE 11 Giant Leap for Sustainable Transportation in Cobo Center It was a busy summer for Cobo Center, collaborating with local Detroit companies to provide sustainable transporta- tion to visitors. From the downtown light rail system, to the new midtown street car system, to our new bike share station, visitors can extend their experience in affordable, sustainable ways. First of course, the People Mover has a station on the 4th floor of Cobo Center, with 13 stops at the most enjoyable parts of the city's downtown area. At just 75 cents a ride, it pays to begin your excursion here. The Q-Line was finished this summer, and connects downtown to the creative culture and boutique com- merce of midtown. Museums, universities, a tech campus, research institutes, automotive centers, sports, music, and cross cultural dining are all available from a Q-Line ride. The People Mover and the Q-Line share a station at Grand Circus Park for visitors wishing to extend their tour. Cobo Center now has the largest MoGo bike share station on-site for your convenience. With 430 bikes and 43 stations across 10 Detroit neighborhoods, MoGo bike share is designed for quick and sustainable trips around town. Passes can be purchased on the MoGo website or at the station with a credit card. Cobo Center works with Freeman & local companies to divert waste Last month the Cobo Center Green Committee collaborated with Freeman and local non-profits to deliver more than 100 buckets of paint to Life Remodeled, a Detroit agency with the mission of remodeling lives, one neighborhood at a time. Life Remodeled is working with other local agencies to transform the now-closed Durfee Elementary-Middle School in Detroit, into a small business incubator that will focus on entrepreneurship, education and community. Leasing the , con- taining 143,000 square-foot Durfee building (built in 1927) for just $1 per year, the agency will repurpose the historic school building into the Community Innovation Center. Thanks to everyone involved, including our friends at Freeman, Spencer O'Neil, Bill Caverly, Cedric Turnbore, and Kristin Shaw.

On September 29, the Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority launched its Digital Art Series on the marquee with inaugural artist Dennis Summer, and his award winning "Cross-Frequency Coupling."

The 3.8 million diodes in Cobo Center’s marquee digital sign is an impressive new vehicle for artists to display their work to millions of people, thanks to a matching grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. A new artist will be featured 24/7 each month to downtown Detroit residents and visitors via the marquee.

“The large size of the screen will allow thousands of people to see the works each day from nearby buildings, during events at Hart Plaza, from the street and during conferences and events

at Cobo Center,” said Maureen Devine, Cobo art curator. “We have nearly 1.3 million visitors each year at the convention cen-ter, while millions more attend the Freedom Festival fireworks, the Jazz Fest, the Movement Electronic Music Festival, and the nationally televised America’s Thanksgiving Parade, which ends a few blocks away.”

Cobo Center will present a monthly series of digital art on the marquee, making Cobo Square – the large public plaza outside that was created as part of Cobo’s $279 million capital improvements – a prime gathering place and viewing area.

A library of videos will be created that we will and continue to show for an agreed-upon length of time. There also is a plan for a “streaming station” that will allow visitor access to audio associated with the works of art.

“Everywhere you go in Detroit, in your car or on foot, we’d like for you to have an encounter with art. Cobo Center is providing a large-scale platform to help accomplish that,” said Victoria Rogers, vice president for arts at the Knight Foundation.

The big video screen contains a total pixel count of 2048x384. The screen has the ability to present images across its full width, in three 16 by 9 feet sections, and a variety of custom configurations. The system has the ability to deliver localized audio.

Through this program, Cobo will present spectacular art in downtown Detroit, drawing attention to the creative spirit of the city, while encouraging regional artists with this additional medium to present their work.

What's In Sight Must Be Right

Kudos to the Cobo Center security team for their quick thinking and commanding organization last month in dealing with a sus-picious package in Cobo Center during a busy event day. Please remember that it is extremely important to have your ID badge on your person and show it to security when asked. If security personnel are directing you away from a particular area you must follow their direction. Do your part to keep everyone safe and secure in Cobo Center. If you see a suspicious package, call Security Control at 313-877-8281 and follow their directions.

Thanks to all Cobo Center staff members who helped fulfill last minute requests for set up and service during the recent 2017 National Minority Supplier Development Council Conference & Business Opportunity Exchange. To everyone who got the word out, rolled up their sleeves, set additional tables and chairs, served additional customers - we salute you! It was a real team effort.
