Hi friends,

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Wow, it is hard to believe that it is ALREADY 2015 and

halfway through January. 2014 FLEW by. I am so excited tosee what this new year has to offer not only for me, or IMEA,

but for you!

In this edition of MARQUEE, you will read about

submissions for the 3rd Annual IMEA Awards. That is also

extremely hard to believe. This will be the THIRD year of our

awards. It seems like yesterday we began brainstorming ideas

for the inaugural event.

Please encourage all of your music and theatre friends tobecome a member of the Association and submit their material for the 2015 IMEA

Awards. Last year, we had roughly over 15,000 submissions. This year, lets try to

DOUBLE that number. Lets bring together as many like-minded individuals as possible

to support live entertainment.

Also, this year I plan to bring you a higher quality newsletter. We are currently

seeking contributors who are interested in writing monthly features and columns in the

newsletter so that it is even more informative and entertaining to our members.

I know I mentioned it in December, but what are your goals for 2015? I mentionedthat I wanted to attempt to write and publish a book, along with spending more time with

family and friends. I do plan to accomplish both of these but I also hope to travel more

this year. Last year, I did a good bit of traveling. I visited New York City, Texas,

Louisiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and many more states

and cities - which will be hard to beat, but I do plan to attempt it. Maybe I can catch up

with you guys in your states?

See you in February!

Sincerely yours,Colt ChambersPresident, International Music and Entertainment Association

From the President…

Notes From A “No” Man

Happy New Year, my fellow IMEAmembers! I hope that you all had a very happyholiday season. Now that we’re $ way throughthe first month of the year, many of you areprobably in the middle of booking live shows for

the spring, summer and beyond. While Ideparted from the topic last month, for myspecial “CD A Day Challenge” message, thismonth, I want to dive back into the topic I startedright before the holidays: When is it ok for anartist to perform for free?

To refresh your memory, last month, Italked about “exposure” gigs, and the value ofthem, vs. getting guaranteed pay, as a workingmusician. Again, in a perfect world, everyonegets paid tons of money, sells a ton of

merchandise, and makes a full-time living doingwhat they love…playing music. But, as I saidbefore, this isn’t a perfect world. While there arelots of opportunities to perform for guaranteedpay, sometimes playing a free “exposure” gigcan be worth every dime you may invest intorehearsals, musicians, merchandise, etc. It’schoosing the RIGHT exposure gig that makesthe difference between making money, gettingpress, AND, most importantly, gaining new FANSon your mailing list, and wasting your time and

money being “free” entertainment for a cheappromoter, not willing to pay his entertainers.

Let’s touch on the wrong gigs again, briefly: I can’t tell you how many times I’ve hearda club say, “We don’t pay the bands, but we cangive them great exposure.” Unless this club hasan extremely high profile, has sold out crowdsevery night, and promotes their shows (andentertainment) in various media outlets, theseare the gigs to politely say “no” to. There’s reallyno point in playing a gig to no crowd (or just your

friends) and making the bar a bunch of money, when you are not getting paid. Play at yourhouse, and invite your friends over. You’ll saveyourself a lot of time and aggravation, not tomention money for sound, lighting, etc.

Now, let’s talk about the right gig. What ifTaylor Swift offered you a chance to play in frontof her crowd, for no pay…would you take it?Heck ya, you would! In fact, one of the littleknown secrets in the industry, is that theseopening slots go for BIG money! Not only are

the openers not guaranteed a pay check for

performing, but they have to PAY the headlineact, or the promoter, for the opening slot. But,

just think of the amount of EXPOSURE theseacts get! Sales of merchandise, itunes, facebook likes, etc are all vastly affected by

these opening slots. Plus, it gives the baby actvaluable press and touring history.

But, let’s get back to the free opener.Obviously, Taylor Swift is an extreme case, butthe point is, if you are approached to open ashow for someone, for free, think about whatkind of crowd that act brings in. Do they draw abig crowd? Is this a crowd that would like yourmusic? Would you benefit by performing in frontof that crowd? Do you have merchandise thatyou can sell to them? If you can answer “yes” to

these questions, this is probably a gig youshould take. Reason being, is that the long termbenefits of performing at this gig will far out-weigh the short term “free” gig that you’reperforming that night. It will pay off in “fans” andmerchandise sales.

When else should you play for free? Howabout a radio station event? Not only will youprobably get a mention on the station, you mightget an interview, a few spins of your latest single, and an invitation to perform at some of their

other “paid” events. Plus, radio station eventsusually draw large crowds. Again, merchandiseand fans. How about a charity event? Whilemany of the bigger charities have budgets forentertainment, it’s always a good idea to becharitable and “give back” to your community. Not only is it good to help out, but on a selfishlevel..it’s good press! Charities will also promotetheir events and get your name out there to thepublic.

These are just a few examples of free

“exposure” gigs that are worth performing at. Ihope it gives you some perspective, the nexttime someone asks you to play for free. Justthink of the pros vs. the cons, and make the rightdecision for you. We all want to make big bucksdoing what we like, but in this extremelycompetitive business, there is always anotheract to come along and take a free gig. Don’t letthem take the fans that could have been yours,

just to make a few dollars that night. But, don’tlet anyone take advantage of you, either! Don’t

be afraid of the word “No!” Til next time…
