Welcome to “THE SITREP” – your RLI RA-Africa newsletter – Volume 9, November 2019.

Salutation

Greetings all ouens and crows, from various Africa branches, to another edition of “The Sitrep”. This

final edition, for 2019, that is.

Christmas Party Saturday 07 December 2019

Rain failed to dampen the spirits of the stalwarts who gathered for some “Commando bonding” at

Dickie Fritz on the first Saturday of the month – and spirits abounded aplenty! The welcome rains did

soften a few “lounge-lizards”- whose absence was noted and the treasurer will be in touch to collect

the fines.

Whilst Butch Galinos played “Tie a Yellow Ribbon” - the “crows” attempted the “Commando Bond”

in an effort to out-do the Commando ouens – the crows failed!

Neil Swart (bless him) was back in his “blazing saddle” – raffling this - and soliciting that, all in the

cause of supporting the welfare fund. Neil was bitterly disappointed not to have a brand-new Mercedes

Benz (as promised!) accompany his certificate of appreciation, awarded by Chairman, Rudi van Aart -

as were a host of other deserving regulars, including Charlie Warren, Carol Doughty, Butch Galinos,

Len Beechie, Mark Taunton, Skippy Skipworth, Debbie Huxham and Chris Ras. Never mind, Neil, -

here’s one for each of you

Also, amongst the award recipients was someone the RLI had never heard of – yet, we all recognised.

Many congratulations, “PETER”- thoroughly deserving, PETER – take a bow, PETER! Here he is!

Banter aside – it was a most enjoyable day with lots of laughs, leg-pulling, merriment and well-

wishing – all graced by the presence a long-time absentee, Kevin Cook.

It was good to see you, Kevin – albeit in the company of that BSAP

reprobate!

Some call him “Gully”

Sunset Calls

The good news is – there are no recent calls. This is, perhaps, the only time “The Sitrep” has NTR in

this section – or, perhaps, ouens have not completed the requisite pass-out permission from the

Chairman.

A Little Nostalgia For those having difficulty reading the insert below – magnify to 140% (bottom

right of your screen)

Let us not lose sight of who we were and whence we came. Apologies to the owner for the “theft” of

this remembrance but, NCOs will delight in the Christmas tradition here, whilst officers might prefer

to lie low.

And for those who joined the regiment towards the latter years of the war – you would be well advised

to brush up on a little history. Did you hear that, Jimmy?

New Research Project

It is sad to report that very few members have responded to the appeal for data to be included in the RLI

nominal roll – but, thanks to those who have. Is it too much to aske for:

1. First Names:

2. Surname:

3. Nickname:

4. Intake #:

5. Service #:

6. Awards/Medals (above RGSM and Zim Indep):

7. Rank:(highest rank in RLI only):

8. Commando/s (platoon not necessary):

9. Para trained- Yes/No?:

10. Status: STW (survived the war) or DS (died subsequently – provide DoD):

11. Period of service from:

12. Period of service to:

13. Attach a photograph that you do not mind being used with your details

14. Any notes you would like to add:

Many RLI members have passed away subsequent to the war and, therefore, an appeal is made to

relatives/friends for the provision of details of those who have left us.

No matter whether you were a high-ranking officer or a troopie – if you earned your green and silver, make sure

your name is recorded amongst the finest counter-insurgency force in world history.

Crossword

To pass time during the festive season, see if you can recall all the Rhodesian jargon and lingo. Don’t

send your answers on a post-card because there is no Flame-lily Holiday on offer to the first person

who solves the puzzle! It would, however, be interesting to know.

Scan, or list, your answers to [email protected] and you will receive one of two replies –

“Well done” or “Unlucky”.
