Introduction

We’ve all been there. Somehow your phone ends up in some form of water,

thrown in a trash can, left in a hotel, thrown against the wall or lost after a

night of too many adult beverages. Or someone ends up messing around on

your phone not having a clue what they’re doing, resulting in one or more of

your contacts lost. Whether you have an Android, Blackberry, iPhone or Windows Phone Seven device,

this e-book will make sure you never end up on Facebook creating post or group that says “I lost my

phone. Send me your number!”

What is Syncing? Syncing is the ability for your phone and GMail account to talk to one another so that the both contain

the exact same information. This is very helpful due to the fact that if you lose your phone, your

contacts will still be available on your GMail account .

The Only Requirement It is imperative that you create a GMail account, preferably something like ########@gmail.com (fill in

the # symbols of course). You can quickly create an account by clicking this link. Not only is it a

prerequisite to this guide but it will make your life a great deal easier in the future, especially if you

continue using this series.

Android This is by far the easiest smartphone operating system to back up your contacts with simply because

everything Google revolves around your GMail account.

Setting Up Your Account When you first purchased your Android phone you should have been prompted with a sign in menu as

shown below:

In the requirements section it was already mentioned that you should create a GMail account, so since

you’ve already done that go ahead and click the sign in button. Once you sign in you’ll have to wait a

few minutes. During this process your phone is doing the following:

Pulling your contacts’ information from GMail (only if you already have contacts attached to

your account).

If there are no contacts attached to your GMail account, this step will not take very long. After your

phone has been set up completely, your carrier should be able to import your contacts from your old

phone to your new phone. After this is done you may think that you’re ready to go and be on your

way…but you’re not. Sure your contacts are stored onto your phone but how’re you supposed to get

them back if your phone becomes damaged beyond repair? The beauty of having a GMail account is

that your contacts will forever be backed up online so that you’ll always be able to retreive them

without your phone.

Backing Up Your Contacts After your carrier has populated your new phone with all of your contacts from your old one, perform

the following steps to ensure that you’ll never lose them again:

Go to the contacts section of

your phone. Press menu and select

import/export. Select Export to SD card. This

will export all of the contacts on your phone onto the SD card on

the phone.

Select Import from SD card. This

will import all of the contacts from your SD card and place

them onto your GMail account.

Select your GMail account (yes you can have more than one).

Do not select Phone-only, unsynced.

Select Import all vCard files to begin the process of moving

your contacts from your phone to your GMail account.

After a few minutes the process should complete. Now you’ll never lose your contacts again. Log onto

your GMail account on your computer to double check that your contacts are associated with your

account.

Be sure to have auto sync cheked in your accon t options, or ocassionally manually

sync, to make sure your contacts stay backed up.

Adding A New Phone Number With Android, this is where the majority of people go wrong. When adding a new phone number,

address, etc. do not select the option that says “phone-only, unsynched.” That option does just what it

says, which is to add the contact to your physical phone and not to your GMail account. This means

that:

A. If you have to get a new phone, your contact is lost and you’ll need to manually add it again

B. The phone number won’t be in your address book when you logon to GMail on the computer,

which enables you to e-mail, text or call that person straight from the computer (cool right!?)

Blackberry

Syncing Your Contacts Syncing your contacts with your BlackBerry device is pretty straight forward. Not only will your contacts

will be wirelessly synced with your GMail account so that you never lose them, but your calendar events

will also be synced as well! Just follow these simple steps:

A. Click this link and enter your phone number to download the app

a. Alternatively, visit m.google.com/sync on your phone

B. Follow the instructions and before you know it, your calendar and contacts’ information will be

synced to your GMail account as well as your phone.

C. Check your GMail account to ensure all of your contacts from your phone look like they match

up with the ones in the contacts section of your GMail account

iOS (iPhone)

Synching Your Contacts and Calendar

Go to the Mail, Contacts, Calendars section of your phone.

Configure the mail options to your liking, then press Add

Account.

Select Microsoft Exchange.

Leave the Domain field blank and enter your credentials.

Press next. If your certificate can’t be verified, choose cancel.

Type m.google.com for the Server name and press Next.

Select whether or not you would like your mail, contacts &

calendars synced. Then select Done.

1a) If you want to delete contacts and calendar events currently on your phone because you already have everything on your GMail account, select Delete. 1b) Otherwise select Keep on My iPhone. 2) If you already

have your contacts’ saved on your GMail account in the My Contacts group, choose Delete Existing Conctacts when promted. If you decide to keep existing contacts, every single person that you’ve ever emailed will be

imported into your iPhone [this will also happen if there are no contacts on your iPhone]. Therefore it is imperitive that you log onto your computer, access your contacts in Gmail, and make you place the correct

people in the my contacts group. 3) Make sure Push is enabled on your iPhone so syncing can occur.

If you already have contacts associated with your GMail account, it is highly recommended that you

export them to your computer in case anything goes wrong. This can be done directly from GMail in

your contacts section. Don’t worry if you forget to export your contacts. Thankfully, GMail lets you

restore your contacts from a specified period of time ranging from 1 minute to 30 days.

Another recommendation is to connect your iPhone to iTunes and export your contacts into a .CSV file

so that you’ll have a backup if anything should go wrong during this process. This can be done by visiting

Windows Phone 7

Backing Up Your Contacts & Calendar If you have a Windows Phone 7 device then you’re in luck! When you first signed into your account

using your Windows Live ID, all of your contacts should automatically be added to Live Mail/Hotmail

account online.

To carry out the sync manually, perform the following steps:

1. Select settings

2. Select emails &accounts

3. Press and hold the name of your account

4. Select sync

WebOS

Setting Up Your Profile WebOS uses the Palm profile to store your contacts and other information. When setting up your

profile make sure that you use your Gmail e-mail address. This will ensure that any contact information

associated with your Gmail account will be imported into your phone. Additionally, any number you add

to your phone will now be automatically synched to your Gmail account so ensure that none of your

information is lost should you happen to misplace your phone.

1. Turn on your device by holding the power button until the screen turns on

2. When prompted, enter your Gmail e-mail address. This will associate your Palm profile with

your Gmail account.

3. Enter a password

4. Select your desired location settings (enable auto- locate)
