Neutral Bay Public School Upgrade UpdateNSW Schools Infrastructure are prioritising the planning of the upgrade to Neutral Bay Public School. The proposed works involve an expansion of the school to provide more permanent teaching spaces and core facilities to meet enrolment growth.

NSW Schools Infrastructure will let parents and the community know more about the new school facilities as they develop the project.

They have invited the school community to share what is important to individuals as they develop the school design.

For more information, and to take the survey, please click the following link: https://www.schoolinfrastructure.nsw.gov.au/projects/n/Neutral-Bay-Public-School-upgrade.html

The survey will be open for feedback until 7pm on 19 June 2020.

P&C InformationAt last week’s P&C meeting, we thanked and farewelled our past P&C President Sharmila Soorian, who stepped down from the position last year. Thank you once again to Sharmila for her outstanding service to the Neutral Bay Public School Community over the past 10 years.

I would like to welcome Liz Henry to the role of P&C President, and look forward to working with her and the P&C Executive. Congratulations Liz, and our heartfelt thank you for taking up this important position in our school community.

P&C NewsRagTagdAll new fleece jumpers and vests come with a Smart Tag embedded within. Please pair these Smart Tags to your phone with a single SMS. A sensor sits in lost property and automatically scans the area for Smart tags every day at 7am. No manual scanning is necessary, and you will be notified when your fleece is found. You would usually collect your fleece at lost property, however, at the moment, parents are not allowed on school ground. Please send an email to [email protected], and we will deliver it to your child’s class.

School Council InformationThe Neutral Bay Public School Council provides a forum to discuss current school issues, projects and initiatives, determine school priorities, ratify school policies and work with the Principal on financial matters and budgeting. The Council comprises parent, staff representatives and community representatives.

Congratulations to Alice Lai and Christine Comerford who were nominated and elected as our two School Council Parent Representatives. Alicia and Christine have children in Year 2.

Changes to the Opportunity Class Placement Process for 2020 Year 4 StudentsThe 2021 Year 5 Opportunity Class placement process was put on hold in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation.

We now have a revised and simplified timeline for the OC placement process, to ensure that students and families can have certainty about their placement as soon as possible.

The changes include:• A new date for online applications. Parents must

apply between 9 June 2020 and 26 June 2020. Late applications cannot be accepted.

• A new test date - Wednesday 16 September 2020.

To ensure fair and consistent assessment of students across New South Wales, students will be offered places based only on their test results this year – there will be no school assessment scores.

There will also be no opportunity for appeals given the tight timeframes.

For further detailed information, please visit: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5

Snow Australia InterschoolsSki resorts across the country will be opening towards the end of June. The delayed opening is designed to allow resorts to prepare service and operational practices that comply with the respective government’s Covid-19 restrictions. For 2020: • There will be only two Interschools Snowsports

Competitions; one in New South Wales at Perisher and one in Victoria at Mt Buller.

• There will be no National Championships.• Cross Country on Sunday 6 September (Primary

Events) and Saturday 12 September (Secondary Events); and

• All other events between Sunday 6 and Friday 11 September.

Unfortunately, the 2020 invitation to participate is only offered to last year’s top 25 individual contestants. If you have any questions on the interschools and discounted snow accommodation, please contact Sharmila on [email protected]

Virtual Cross CountryAthlete ProfileAtiksh N. from 1A has participated regularly in the Virtual Cross Country competition for his sports house Warung.

1. What do you like about running?I like that once you get fit and healthy, you can run faster and faster. I try to beat my Dad.

2. Who do you run with?I run with Dad. He has an app that tells you how fast we’re running and how far we run. Sometimes, we jog or walk instead of running if I’m tired.

3. How do you stay motivated if you don't want to exercise?I try my best to beat my Dad so I can win. When I win, he says, “Well done, Atiksh!” and he’s really proud.

4. When do you like to run?I run every day with Dad on the weekends, and in the evenings after school.

5. I can’t run without...My Dad’s phone and the Nike Run Club app. I like how it tells me how I’m going, how fast I am and how far I run.

6. If I didn’t exercise...I wouldn’t grow up healthy and strong.

7. Do you have any tips for other students?Stretching is important before you run because you don’t get as tired.

8. What would you say to encourage other students to join in?I would say you can run or jog if you like, but you can also walk if you want.

Athlete ProfileOlivka G. from 5D has participated regularly in the Virtual Cross Country competition for her sports house Milson.

1. What do you like about running?I like running because you can go outside, instead of being stuck at home. It’s nice because you can focus on yourself and get ready for other races—long distance or short distance.

2. Who do you run with?I usually run by myself. When my mum and little sister finish their 1 kilometre run, they cheer me on.

3. How do you stay motivated when you don't want to exercise?I warm up before my run to stretch my muscles and get my body ready. Once I finish stretching, I feel more motivated and ready to go.

4. When do you like to run?I run in the afternoon on school days . On the weekends, I run in the morning when I’m fresh.

5. I can’t run without...My music. I have a running playlist set up on my phone—not too fast, not too slow, but still pumping. I breathe in time with the music. When I have a stitch, I skip to the next song, concentrate on my breathing and that helps the stitch to go away.

6. Do you have any tips for other students?Start with a slow speed and gradually get faster with each lap.

7. What would you say to encourage other students to join in the Virtual Cross Country? You can do it. One tip is the faster your hands move, the faster you go, so stretch your arms before you start.
